          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NHL on NBC betting preview: Blackhawks at Capitals
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at Washington Capitals (-130, 5.5)

Two of the NHL’s best collide in what could be a Stanley Cup final preview.

The Blackhawks come into Sunday’s game on a two-game losing streak after putting together eight wins in a row. The Capitals are riding a seven-game winning streak and have lost just one game in their past 10 outings.

These teams have met just 10 times over the last 10 years, with Washington winning their most recent game – a 4-3 overtime victory in Chicago on March 14, 2010. Since 2001, the Capitals are 4-5-1 against the Blackhawks.

Four of the last five meetings between Washington and Chicago have played over the total. However, the teams have combined for a 4-6 over/under mark in the past 10 head-to-head contests.

          Presidential push

Perhaps a trip to the White House will get the Blackhawks back on track. Chicago visited President Obama Friday, celebrating the team’s Stanley Cup victory last season. Obama, a native of Chicago, was more than happy to welcome the team to Washington, D.C.

"It's the first time as president I get to say congratulations for bringing a world championship to my hometown, the city of Chicago," Obama said in a speech. "We have a proud tradition in Chicago of believing that no matter how long it takes, how much we have to endure, it's only a matter of time before our team finally wins it all."

Chicago appeared to have found its winning ways in recent weeks, but the two-game slide has seen the team lose back-to-back one-goal games, including a 4-3 shootout defeat to the Tampa Bay Lightning Wednesday.

The Blackhawks currently sit fifth in the Western Conference with 81 points. However, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Calgary also have 81 points and the Anaheim Ducks, who are ninth place, have 79 points heading into Saturday’s schedule.

Adding to the pressure of the playoff race is the injury to center Dave Bolland, who is doubtful for Wednesday’s game with Washington. Bolland was elbowed in the back of the head by Tampa Bay defenseman Pavel Kubina in the first period Wednesday. Bolland played out the opening period but didn’t return for the remainder of the game. Kubina was suspended three games by the NHL.

"I wasn't happy with the hit," Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville told reporters. "We didn't get any benefit out of it. We lose a player, we don't get a power play out of it or anything like that. It was a dangerous hit. The league knows what the comparables are and took action. I wasn't happy with the hit at all. "I would say that's one, when you look at it, it's probably exactly the type of hit they talk about that they don't want in the game."

          Capital punishment

The Capitals are beginning to look like true Stanley Cup contenders after inconsistent efforts for most of the season. Washington has just one loss since February 20 and has marched up the Eastern Conference standings, currently sitting in second place with 88 points – two points behind the first-place Philadelphia Flyers.

The Capitals have been getting the job done on defense, allowing just 1.28 goals per game during their seven-game winning streak. They took down the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 Friday night, getting a tremendous effort from rookie goaltender Braden Holtby. He turned away 40 shots, including 16 in the third period.

Holtby has stepped into the spotlight with an injuries to Semyon Varlamov and Michal Neuvirth. He’s started the past three games and is 7-2-2 with a 1.85 GAA heading into the weekend.

"It's a chance for him," Capitals winger Mike Knuble told reporters about Holtby. "That's the way he looks at it. It's a chance. He gets a chance to play while the other two guys are down. As a young goalie, you've got to relish those moments. You want to take those opportunities when you can."

Helping out the Washington goaltenders is superstar forward Alex Ovechkin, who has been the driving force on offense during the team’s hot streak. He has 11 points in the past seven games and three goals in the last two contests.

While Ovechkin has been lethal, the Capitals' power play still needs improvement. Washington owns the 24th-best power play in the NHL and has managed to go just 14 for 135 on the man advantage over the past 43 games. Washington was 0 for 2 on the power play versus Carolina Friday.

          Trends

          - Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
          - Blackhawks are 35-16 in their last 51 vs. teams with winning records.
          - Capitals are 3-8 in their last 11 vs. Western Conference.
          - Over is 6-1 in Blackhawks last seven vs. Southeast Division.
          - Under is 13-2-1 in Capitals last 16 vs. Western Conference.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Ottawa Senators at Buffalo Sabres

Somewhere on the plane ride from Colorado to Ottawa last month, goaltender Craig Anderson rediscovered his talent. All it took was getting traded from one of the worst teams in the Western Conference to one of the worst in the Eastern Conference for him to remember that he didn’t suck.

Since getting traded to Ottawa, Anderson has gone 6-3, making over 30 saves in six of those starts. Overall, he has stopped 284 of 297 shots with the Senators, posting an astronomical .956 save percentage to go with a dental-floss thin 1.44 goals-against average. And he won’t be bashful about going on the road to face the Sabres.

“Craig is in a zone right now,” Ottawa coach Cory Clouston said.

On the road with Ottawa he has been even better, posting a 4-1 record along with a 1.18 goals-against average and .969 save percentage.

“It feels good to come in here and play well,” Anderson said following a 2-1 win over the Panthers. “There was a lot from the outside. They had some quality chances. We did a great job of keeping them to the outside and allowing me to make the save.”

Buffalo is coming off a tough game against Toronto and likely will be without forwards Johan Hecht and Drew Stafford as they continue to nurse injuries.

            Pick: Ottawa

Phoenix Coyotes at Anaheim Ducks (-135, 5.5)

The Ducks offense is back on the right track.

Anaheim has lit the red lamp 20 times in its past six games. Not surprisingly, the team is a sparkling 5-1 over that span. In their most recent victory--a 5-2 win over slumping Colorado--the Ducks notched a power-play goal and held a 33-26 edge in shots.

During this stretch, the team has been led by forwards Ryan Getzlaf (2 goals, 6 assists), Corey Perry (3 goals, 3 assists), and Teemu Selanne (1 goal, 5 assists).

"These are all must-wins for us," Getzlaf said following a win over the Avalanche. "We can't afford to take anybody lightly in this league, and we were victims of that to start this game. The first period we were sitting back. Guys did a great job of turning it around in the second period. It's all about how you finish and we were able to get things done tonight."

On the other bench, the Coyotes have dropped six of their past eight games and are struggling to shut down other teams on the man advantage. Phoenix has coughed up a power-play goal in seven of its past eight games for a staggering total of 12 over that span.

The Ducks should easily cash in.

            Pick: Anaheim
