    Daily Sports Roundup: March 12

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Big East decides its conference champion, while the Lakers seek a win over the Mavs in Dallas, and the Flames host the Canucks.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up nine games on Saturday, with Memphis at Miami, Portland at Atlanta, the Clippers at Washington, Sacramento at New Orleans, Utah at Chicago, Philadelphia at Milwaukee, San Antonio at Houston, Detroit at Denver, and the Lakers at Dallas. Dallas knocked off Los Angeles 109-100 at home as a 3-point underdog when the two teams last met on January 19; the 209 combined points went OVER the posted total of 188. Jason Terry and Shawn Marion each tossed in 22 points off the bench for the Mavs in that win, while Dirk Nowitzki was held to 14 points and eight rebounds. Pau Gasol had 23 points in that defeat for the Lakers, while Kobe Bryant chipped in with 21 points.

The ACC, Big Ten, SEC, and Atlantic 10 conference tourneys all reach their semifinal rounds on Saturday, while championship games will be played in the Big 12, Conference USA, Mountain West, Pac-10, and Big East. The Big East championship game at Madison Square Garden will have Connecticut taking on Louisville. The Huskies continued their run through the tourney by knocking off Syracuse 76-71 in the semifinals on Friday night. Kemba Walker poured in 33 points for UConn in that win. The Cardinals won the second semifinal matchup on Friday, beating Notre Dame 83-77 in overtime behind 20 points from Preston Knowles. Terrence Jennings added 16 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are 10 games on the NHL's schedule for Saturday, with Montreal at Pittsburgh, Columbus at Carolina, the Islanders at New Jersey, Atlanta at Philadelphia, Tampa Bay at Florida, Buffalo at Toronto, Colorado at Nashville, Detroit at St. Louis, the Rangers at San Jose, and Vancouver at Calgary. The Canucks and Flames last met on February 12, with Vancouver winning 4-2 as a -200 home favorite in an OVER result. Mikael Samuelsson and Alex Burrows each scored twice for the Canucks in that win, while Roberto Luongo stopped 24 of 26 Calgary shots. Tim Jackman and Curtis Glencross had the goals for the Flames, and Miikka Kiprusoff made 29 saves that night.

Saturday's betting tips: Paul could return for Hornets

      Who’s hot

NHL: The Canadiens are 5-1 in their last six overall and 4-1 in their last five road games.

NCAAB: Clemson is 4-1 ATS in its last five overall and the under is 5-1-1 in its last seven overall.

NCAAB: Michigan is 11-1 ATS in its last 12 against the Big Ten.

NBA: The Nuggets are 8-1 ATS in their last nine overall and 4-0 ATS in their last four home games.

NBA: The over is 14-2 in the Kings’ last 16 overall and 8-0 in their last eight road games.

      Who’s not

NHL: The Blue Jackets are 0-6 in their last six overall.

NBA: The Hawks are 1-5 ATS in their last five overall and 1-6 ATS in their last seven home games.

NBA: The Heat are 1-7 ATS in their last eight overall and 1-5 ATS in their last six home games.

      Key stat

25/39 – Jon Diebler from the three-point line in his last six games for Ohio State heading into the Big Ten Tournament, including an unreal 10-for-12 performance at Penn State on March 1. Diebler, though, went just one for five against Northwestern on Friday and the Buckeyes needed overtime to book their spot in the semifinals and set up a meeting with Michigan. The Wolverines mostly kept Diebler in check in two regular-season meetings; he combined to go five for 10 from long range but scored only nine points in each contest.

      Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul returned to practice on Thursday for the first time since a scary collision with Cleveland’s Ramon Sessions last Sunday. Paul was diagnosed only with a mild concussion, but it has kept him out and he remains questionable for Saturday’s home contest against Sacramento. He returned to practice for the first time on Thursday.

"It was good to see him out here getting some shots up," teammate Jarrett Jack told the Associated Press. "We knew it was a matter of time. We all knew how tough he is, the injuries he's battled through over the course of his career. We knew this wasn't going to keep him out too long. He was actually trying to play yesterday but they wouldn't let him out there just for precautionary reasons."

      Biggest games on the slate

      Connecticut Huskies vs. Louisville Cardinals

Los Angeles Lakers at Dallas Mavericks (-1, 193)

      Notable quotable

“Live another day; that’s what you want to do at this time of the month.” – North Carolina forward John Henson after his team's 61-59 win over Miami in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament. The Tar Heels, seeded first, trailed by 19 points with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game but ended up winning on a Tyler Zeller layup at the buzzer. They play Clemson in Saturday's semifinals.

      Tips and notes

The St. Louis Blues have been plagued by injuries all season long, and it only got worse this week. Defenseman Barret Jackman (13 assists, 39 penalty minutes) and center Alex Steen (18 goals, 30 assists) both went down in Wednesday’s win at Columbus, Jackman with a broken finger and Steen with a high ankle sprain. Jackman underwent surgery on Thursday and is expected to return in mid-April while Steen is out indefinitely and could miss the remainder of the season. Adding insult to injury, literally, St. Louis has to play the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.

Montreal did not look good its first game after Max Pacioretty sustained a horrific concussion on Tuesday, losing 4-1 at St. Louis two days later. "You're concerned about him, but at the end of the day, we're professionals," captain Brian Gionta said following the game. "We're going to go out there and put things behind us. I just think our effort wasn't there." On Saturday the Canadiens face Pittsburgh, which is—finally—starting to fare just fine in the wake of injuries. Sidney Crosby is out indefinitely with post-concussion symptoms and Evgeni Malkin is out for the season following knee surgery. The Penguins have won two in a row and have collected points in five straight outings.

The Washington Wizards are out of the playoff race, dealing with injuries, and still trying to gel with a host of newcomers on board. “Is it tough? Yeah,” head coach Flip Saunders told the Washington Post. “It's tough for the fans. It's tough for the players. It's tough for everybody. But in talking to (owner) Ted Leonsis, you have to you know, 'Where do you want to be? Do you want to be there short term, or do you want to be there long term?’'' Saunders is going to find out which of his players want to be there long-term, as he announced this week that his team is going into “training camp” mode for the rest of the season. Lineup tinkering is going to coincide with a hot opponent on Saturday, as Washington is running into a Clippers squad that has won four in a row (4-0 ATS).

Harvard's Keith Wright was named Ivy League Player of the Year on Thursday. Wright, a 6'8'' and 240-pound power forward, is averaging 14.9 points and 8.5 rebounds heading into Saturday's conference title playoff against Princeton. He has enjoyed a pair of big outings against the Tigers, which the two teams split (both teams won and covered the spread at home). Wright went for 16 and 11 in a February 4 road loss, then recorded 16 points, five rebounds, and six blocks in a March 5 home victory.

        Saturday's six-pack

-- Hey, my godson started his college baseball career by allowing one run in seven IP, getting a win and a save down in Florida.

-- Colorado pitcher Aaron Cook broke bones in his ring finger when he caught his right hand in a door. Bad thing for a right-handed pitcher.

-- Had forgotten that Baltimore went 34-23 LY after Buck Showalter became manager; look at their lineup- they're going to score runs.

-- NBA rescinded Amare Stoudemire's 16th technical foul, which keeps him in Knicks' next game, against Indiana. Funny thing is, if Amare gets a technical in his next game, he would still miss a game against Indiana, since Knicks-Pacers play consecutive games against each other.

-- 76ers beat the Celtics Friday, even though no one on Philly scored more than 14 points. Don't see that every day.

-- After today, you won't hear another word about the NFL from me unless it is football-related (the draft, for example). I'm tired of reading and writing about lawsuits and injunctions. If I wanted to read about all that stuff, would have become a damn greedy scumweasel lawyer.

Saturday's List of 13: Wrapping up another exciting day of hoops

        13) Wow. Talk about drama; kid on Florida State drains a jumper from right baseline right at the buzzer; its called good, they go to replay, and in a very, very close call, they wave the hoop off and Virginia Tech wins to move on to play Duke after a tense 52-51 win over the Seminoles. Have to feel happy for Seth Greenberg, who needed the win more than FSU.

Kid on Virginia Tech who hit the game-winning shot, Erick Green, was a miserable 1-12 from floor before hitting winning shot with 0:04.7 left.

        12) If you're in El Paso Saturday morning, you can go to the C-USA title game for free, even though the home team is playing. Guess ticket sales werren't going too well. Should be a pretty good game, UTEP-Memphis.

By the way, they started the Tulsa-UTEP game with a woman's ball; not sure how the officials can allow that to happen, but it does now and then. The woman's basketball is a decent amount smaller than a normal ball.

        11) Rough day for Georgia coach Mark Fox, who called a timeout to set up a last-second play, a split-second before his guard banked in a shot to win the game. Hoop didn't count, game went to OT and Georgia lost to Alabama 65-59. Dawgs are squarely on the bubble.

        10) Referee Earl Walton, one of the refs in the Rutgers-St John's fiasco on Tuesday, worked the Michigan State-Purdue game Friday. Guess if you're under 60, its OK to get suspended in one tourney and work another one.

        9) Notre Dame had a 16-point lead but lost in OT to Louisville, with its star Hansbrough going 3-16 from floor. Cardinals are mentally tough; they won an earlier game vs Marquette after being down 18 with 5:45 left.

        7) Have to feel for New Mexico's terrific guard Dairese Gary, who tore up his knee a minute into the second half Friday night; senior Gary had nine points, seven assists at halftime. Now, his college career is likely over.

        6) Kid named Michael Lizarraga on Cal State-Northridge is only player in Division I basketball who is deaf.

        5) Texas Longhorns are 40-9 in their last 49 games against Texas A&M.

        4) It happened so early on today that I almost forgot about it, but Miami Hurricanes did an amazing imitation of the Washington Generals, losing at the buzzer to North Carolina in a game Miami led by as much as 19 in the second half. Generals always lost to the Harlem Globetrotters- they were the Wily E. Coyotes of basketball. Miami was like that Friday.

        3) Either Dayton or St Joe's will be in Atlantic 14 final- every bubble club in America will be rooting very hard against them, since they'll be playing either Temple or Richmond, both of whom are probably already in.

        2) Your final scores tonight: Jimmer 52, Penn State 36, Wisconsin 33. Penn State-Wisconsin game had a ridiculously-low 42 possessions in it tonight, the lowest in a game since 1998. The normal college game usually has mid-to-upper 60's as far as possessions go. Very much a snoozer.

        1) San Diego State beat UNLV 74-72 on a floater by DJ Gay with under 0:05 left; a tremendous game. Aztecs beat UNLV three times this year by a combined total of 14 points.

If you like college basketball at all, make sure you watch San Diego State-BYU Saturday night. Two of the best teams in the country, great senior guards, should be an outstanding end to Championship Week.

KU won this tournament four of last five years, beating Texas in finals three times; team with better Big 12 record won last six finals. Big East Tournament: UConn vs. Louisville preview and pick

              Connecticut Huskies vs. Louisville Cardinals

              THE STORY
: With the way Kemba Walker is playing right now, No. 19 Connecticut certainly looks capable of becoming the first team to win five games in five days at the Big East tournament. Standing in the way is another team that is playing pretty well at the moment - No. 14 Louisville, which is aiming for prime NCAA tournament seeding. Walker will be looking to continue his record run when the ninth-seeded Huskies take on the third-seeded Cardinals on Saturday in the final of the Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York.

              TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN, ESPN3.com

ABOUT LOUISVILLE (25-8): The Cardinals won four of five to close out the regular season and earn a double bye in the tournament. They started their run to the finals Thursday by crushing Marquette 81-56. It looked as though Louisville’s run was going to come to an end Friday when No. 2 seed Notre Dame took a 46-32 lead into the half. But the Cardinals came out of the locker room a different team, locking down on defense and holding the Irish to six field goals in the second half to force overtime. Preston Knowles 20 points to lead Louisville while Terrence Jennings scored four in overtime and finished with 16 in the 83-77 victory.

ABOUT CONNECTICUT (25-9): Walker became the first player in Big East tournament history to score 20 points in four straight games when he went off for 33 Friday, and added 12 rebounds, six steals and five assists as the Huskies escaped with a 76-71 overtime victory over No. 4 seed Syracuse. No team has won five games in five days to win the tournament since it expanded to this format three years ago. But after dominating DePaul and Georgetown in the first two rounds, Connecticut has made a statement with victories over No. 1 seed Pittsburgh on Thursday and the Orange on Friday. Walker’s 111 overall points are a tournament record, and the Huskies are aiming for their first tournament title since 2004.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: Louisville took both meetings this season, 79-78 in double overtime at Connecticut on Jan. 29 when Peyton Siva took over late, and 71-58 at home on Feb. 18 when the Cardinals held Walker to 16 points on 3-of-10 shooting.

UP NEXT: The Huskies have worked their way into the mix for a top four seed when the field of 68 is announced on Sunday while Louisville could jump up as high as a No. 2 or 3 seed with the Big East title.

              PREDICTION: UConn 88, Louisville 84

Big Ten Tournament: Semifinals preview and picks

Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Michigan Wolverines

              THE STORY
: Teams that overcame second-half deficits meet Saturday when archrivals Ohio State and Michigan play for a third time this season in the Big Ten Conference semifinals. The Buckeyes trailed Northwestern by three with under five minutes to play before forcing overtime and feeding freshman Jared Sullinger in the extra session for the 67-61 win. The Wolverines overcame a 12-point deficit with a 21-4 run to knock off Illinois 60-55 behind electric young guards Darius Morris and Tim Hardaway Jr. Ohio State has a pair of single-digit wins against Michigan this season.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: The Buckeyes won in Ann Arbor 68-64 on Jan. 12, using a 12-0 second-half run to take command and holding off a late rally. William Buford tallied 19 points and Jared Sullinger added 12. Darius Morris led Michigan with 18. Sullinger dominated inside at Columbus on Feb. 3, scoring 19 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in a 62-53 win. Michigan led by six early in the second half before the Buckeyes got it inside to Sullinger – using the same strategy they used Friday against Northwestern. Tim Hardaway Jr. had 15 points and Morris 12 but was 1 of 7 in the second half. Michigan will have to find a way to contain Sullinger with its undersized front line, and Morris will have to create open perimeter opportunities for Hardaway and the rest of his teammates to pull off the upset.

PREDICTION: Ohio State 67, Michigan 61

Michigan State Spartans vs. Penn State Nittany Lions

              THE STORY
: Resembling the team that was ranked No. 2 in the preseason rankings rather than the one that played inconsistently all season, seventh-seeded Michigan State beat second seed Purdue on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Big Ten Conference tournament on Saturday afternoon. The win most assuredly clinched an NCAA tournament berth for the Spartans, who will play Penn State, which is coming off the ugliest win that can be imagined against No. 13 Wisconsin.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: The schools split their two games this season with each winning on its home court. Penn State won 66-62 at Bryce Jordan Center on Jan. 8, as Taylor Battle shook a poor-shooting game by draining a clutch jumper from the right baseline with 18 seconds left to provide the Lions with a three-point lead. Jeff Brooks had 17 points and 12 rebounds, Andrew Jones scored 16 and Battle 13 on 3-of-13 shooting. Durrell Summers led Michigan with 21 but air-balled a potential game-winning 3-pointer with 10 seconds left. The Spartans throttled the Lions 75-57 at the Breslin Center one month later. Drymond Green had a triple-double with 15 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists and Kalin Lucas scored 15 of his 24 in the second half. Battle scored 19 and Brooks 15. The Lions, who used just 10 minutes off the bench Friday, will have to keep their frontline players out of foul trouble against the Spartans’ big, beefy and deep frontcourt contingent.

PREDICTION: Michigan State 62, Penn State 59

ACC Tournament: Semifinals preview and picks

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Clemson Tigers

              THE STORY
: Clemson all but assured itself of an NCAA tournament appearance after throttling Boston College 70-47 in Friday’s ACC tournament quarterfinal. Top-seeded North Carolina is riding high after storming back from a 19-point second-half hole to stun Miami 61-59 in another quarterfinal Friday. Tyler Zeller’s game-winning basket at the buzzer capped one of the most memorable comebacks in tournament history and extended UNC’s winning streak to eight games.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: The two teams have met twice previously this season, with North Carolina winning both games – in Chapel Hill (75-68) on Jan. 18 and at Littlejohn Coliseum (64-62) on Feb. 12. The Tigers were clearly bothered by the Tar Heels’ size and length up front in both contests, as Jerai Grant (Clemson’s second-leading scorer at 12.4 points per game and leading rebounder at 6.8) failed to score and managed just one rebound in the game at Clemson.

              PREDICTION: UNC 65, Clemson 55

Virginia Tech Hokies at Duke Blue Devils

              THE STORY
: It’s unclear whether No. 5 Duke will have conference Player of the Year Nolan Smith when the second-seeded Blue Devils face sixth-seeded Virginia Tech in an ACC semifinal Saturday in Greensboro, N.C. Smith, a senior guard who averaged 21.6 points in the regular season, jammed his toe and had to leave Friday’s quarterfinal win over Maryland. Coach Mike Krzyzewski said Smith would have X-rays, calling him questionable. Virginia Tech won the only regular-season meeting, upsetting then top-ranked Duke 64-60 on Feb. 26. The Hokies enter the semifinals after a dramatic game with Florida State, winning after the officials waved off the Seminoles' buzzer-beating, go-ahead bucket.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: Virginia Tech fans stormed the court after the Hokies beat Duke 64-60 on Feb. 26. Jeff Allen was dominant, getting 18 points and 15 rebounds, as all five starters scored in double figures.Kyle Singler led the Blue Devils with 22 points. Duke hit just 4 of 20 from beyond the arc.

Duke had won the previous four meetings and 14 of the previous 16. Six of the last nine games in the series have been decided by 10 points or less.

PREDICTION: Duke 76, Virginia Tech 68

SEC Tournament: Semifinals preview and picks

Kentucky Wildcats vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

              THE STORY
: Kentucky goes on the second leg of its Payback Tour, looking to avenge another regular-season loss. After taking out Ole Miss on Friday, the Wildcats will be out to even the score against Alabama. This game is a classic battle between offense and defense. Alabama leads the SEC in scoring defense (58.8 points) and Kentucky leads the conference in scoring offense (76.8 points). At least Alabama shouldn't have to worry about the possibility of winning the SEC West and missing the NCAA playoffs. The Tide's impressive comeback win over Georgia in the second round should have solidified their position in the championship field.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: Alabama defeated Kentucky 68-66 in Tuscaloosa on Jan. 18. Kentucky leads the all-time series 100-36 and has won five of the last six against the Tide.

              PREDICTION: Kentucky 74, Alabama 67

              Florida Gators vs. Vanderbilt Commodores

              THE STORY
: Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings didn’t like his team’s toughness and poise in its regular-season finale, an 86-76 home loss to No. 12 Florida. Saturday, he’ll get to see if his players learned from that defeat when No. 24 Vanderbilt plays the Gators in an SEC semifinal at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The Commodores dropped both games to Florida this season and have lost 17 of their past 22 meetings.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: Florida won 86-76 in Nashville in the regular-season finale as all five starters scored in double figures and the Gators won the rebounding battle, 30-21. Boynton led the way with 17 points, hitting 4 of 9 3-pointers.

On Feb. 1 in Gainesville, Florida beat Vandy 65-61 in overtime thanks to Kenny Boynton’s go-ahead 3-pointer with a minute left. John Jenkins scored 22 for the Commodores, just like he did in the first meeting, but air-balled a 3-pointer right after Boynton drained one.

              PREDICTION: Florida 81, Vanderbilt 80

Big 12 Tournament: Texas vs. Kansas preview and pick

              Texas Longhorns vs. Kansas Jayhawks

              THE STORY
: To say Kansas is the team to beat in the Big 12 tournament would be an understatement. The top-seeded Jayhawks will try for their fifth tournament title in six years - and eighth in the league's 14-year history - when they take on No. 2 seed Texas in the final Saturday in Kansas City, Mo. The Longhorns are seeking their first Big 12 tournament title - and the first for any Texas school - after losing in the championship game five times from 2001 to 2008.

              TV: 6 p.m. ET, ESPN, ESPN3.com

ABOUT KANSAS (31-2): After a sluggish start to the tournament, when they needed a second-half rally to beat No. 9 seed Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals, the Jayhawks got back to their dominant ways in Friday's 90-83 semifinal win against Colorado. Led by 20 points apiece from twins Marcus Morris and Markieff Morris, Kansas controlled the paint, shot 49.1 percent and outrebounded the Buffaloes 39-25. Guards Tyrel Reed and Tyshawn Taylor did their part, too, with 15 points apiece. The Jayhawks are 14-1 in the Big 12 tournament since 2006, with the lone loss against Baylor in the quarterfinals in 2009.

ABOUT TEXAS (27-6): After losing three of their last five regular-season games, the Longhorns have looked more like the team that was in line for a Big 12 title and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament so far this week. They dismantled Oklahoma in the quarterfinals and beat a good Texas A&M team for the third time in three meetings this season in the semifinals. Tristan Thompson, the Big 12 Freshman of the Year, posted his fourth consecutive double-double - and ninth of the season - in the 70-58 win against the Aggies with 14 points and 10 of his 13 rebounds on the offensive end. Sophomore guard Jordan Hamilton had another big game with 17 points and eight rebounds, and J'Covan Brown added 15 points off the bench, including three 3-pointers in the second half.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: The Longhorns are responsible for one of Kansas' two losses; they snapped the Jayhawks' 69-game home winning streak with a 74-63 victory at Allen Fieldhouse on Jan. 22. Brown scored 23 points off the bench to lead Texas back from a 15-point second-half deficit.

UP NEXT: Both teams are headed to the NCAA tournament - the Jayhawks likely as a No. 1 seed - so they'll be camped out in front of the television Sunday evening to see where they're headed and who they'll face in the first round.

              PREDICTION: Texas 75, Kansas 72

Pac-10 Tournament: Washington vs. Arizona preview and pick

              Washington Huskies vs. Arizona Wildcats

              THE STORY
: No. 15 Arizona seeks to sweep both the regular season and Pac-10 tournament titles when the Wildcats face off against Washington in the Pac-10 finals Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats reached the Pac-10 tournament championship game for the first time since 2005 by outlasting Southern Cal on Friday. Washington looks to atone for a disappointing regular season and defend its Pac-10 tournament title with a win Saturday.

              TV: 6 p.m. EST, CBS

ABOUT ARIZONA (27-6): Arizona continued its march through the Pac-10 tournament, picking up a 67-62 win over Southern Cal on Friday, despite being outshot by the Trojans. Derrick Williams again led Arizona with 20 points and six rebounds as the Wildcats won their fourth consecutive game. Arizona has played tough defense in Los Angeles, but has yet to win in dominating fashion. In its first game against Oregon State, Arizona relied on consistent 3-point shooting to capture a nine-point win. Arizona is 5-1 all-time in Pac-10 tournament championship games.

ABOUT WASHINGTON (22-10): After falling to third place in the Pac-10 during the regular season, the Huskies have a chance to win their second-straight Pac-10 tournament Saturday. Washington has been shorthanded the entire tournament, with just eight scholarship players in uniform. Junior point guard Isaiah Thomas has sat out just two minutes of the tournament and will need to deliver another big game
for the Huskies. Terrence Ross has performed well for the Huskies in the tournament, scoring 13 points Friday in his second career start.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: The teams split the season series, with Washington winning 85-68 in Seattle on Jan. 20 and Arizona winning 87-86 in the desert on Feb. 19. In both teams’ wins, their star players played big roles. Thomas notched 22 points, 10 assists and six rebounds in Washington’s win and Williams scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in Arizona’s win. The player with the biggest day will likely carry his team to victory.

              PREDICTION: Washington 78, Arizona 75

Mountain West Tournament: BYU vs. San Diego State preview and pick

BYU Cougars vs. San Diego State Aztecs

              THE STORY
: Jimmer Fredette made his strongest pitch yet for National Player of the Year honors on Friday but he has more work to do Saturday as No. 8 Brigham Young meets No. 6 San Diego State in the Mountain West Conference tournament title game. Fredette scored a career-high 52 points in the Cougars’ semifinal victory over New Mexico and now seeks to add a conference tournament title to his long list of accomplishments. San Diego State will also be highly motivated as both of its losses were to BYU. The Aztecs reached the title game when D.J. Gay hit the game-winning shot with 4.9 seconds left of its semifinal victory over host UNLV. The two teams shared the regular-season title, but the Cougars are the top-seeded team based on sweeping the season series with San Diego State.

              TV: 7 p.m. EST, Versus.

ABOUT BYU (30-3, 14-2 Mountain West): Fredette had a game for the ages in the 87-76 victory over New Mexico. He hit 22 of 37 shots, including seven 3-pointers, while surpassing Danny Ainge as the program’s all-time leading scorer. Fredette has seven career 40-point games. Jackson Emery added 14 points and five steals and Kyle Collinsworth had 11 points and nine rebounds for BYU, which is playing without leading rebounder Brandon Davies. Davies is suspended for the rest of the season for violating the school’s honor code. Fatigue and bench productivity rate as concerns for the Cougars in their third game in three days.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO STATE (31-2, 14-2 Mountain West): The Aztecs face a team that solidly outplayed them in two meetings during the best season in school history. The earlier two losses came with Davies on the court and San Diego State has a decided frontcourt advantage with Davies now seated on the bench in dress clothes. Forward Kawhi Leonard and center Malcolm Thomas are a top-notch inside duo and Gay furthered his reputation as a clutch player with his game-winning shot against UNLV. Leonard had 18 points and Gay scored 15 against the Rebels.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: BYU won both meetings by 13 points. The Cougars notched a 71-58 home win on Jan. 26 and made it a sweep with an impressive 80-67 road victory on Feb. 26. BYU has won seven of the last eight meetings between the schools.

UP NEXT: The winner claims the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The losing team is headed to the NCAA tourney as an at-large selection.

PREDICTION: San Diego State 73, BYU 70

Pick 'n' roll: Saturday's best NBA bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Pistons at Denver Nuggets (-9, 209)

No one could have predicted the Nuggets would be this successful following the Carmelo Anthony trade.

The squad is 6-2 SU and 7-1 ATS since dealing Anthony last month and is playing some of its best defense of the year. Known for their up-tempo style, the Nuggets have held five opponents to 100 or fewer points over that span, an impressive feat for a team known to be indifferent when defending its own goal.

“We pressured them and we played really good,” Denver guard Ty Lawson said after a 116-97 win in Phoenix this week. “We play 'D,' We play really good 'D.' We’ve got a lot of different styles we can play.”

Maybe most impressive during the team’s winning streak is that it has excelled as a favorite – since the Melo trade, Denver is 3-0 SU and ATS in games where it lays points.

On the other bench, the Pistons have struggled to play any kind of defense. Detroit has coughed up 100 or more points in eight of its past nine games. Not surprisingly, the Pistons are a mere 3-6 SU over the span.

"We're looking to mix and match all the time," Detroit coach John Kuester said. "We're always searching to see who's going to give us the most in certain spots and situations.”

                  Pick: Denver

Los Angeles Lakers at Dallas Mavericks (-1, 193)

The Mavericks may finally have shed their label as being soft. After coach Rick Carlisle called his team out following a disappointing loss to the Hornets, the Mavericks responded with a 127-109 thrashing of the visiting Knicks.

"I keep saying it, but there's nothing soft about this team," Mavericks guard Jason Terry said. "You look at our record, and you've got to be a tough team to accomplish what we have to this point and to go where we're going. And I'll leave it at that."

The “hard” Mavericks are 8-2 SU in their past 10 while just 5-5 ATS over that span. But the team always seem to play its best in tight contests. Dallas is 3-1-1 ATS as a three-point or fewer favorite this season.

And the Lakers have not enjoyed facing the Mavericks this year. Los Angeles is 8-2 SU and 7-3 ATS over its past 10, but has struggled against Dallas. The Mavericks won the only meeting this season, 109-100 in Texas, and have claimed the past two meetings overall.

"We were making mistakes all night on defense, because offensively things were going well for us," Lakers guard Kobe Bryant said. "It was one of those games that was fool's gold. We were playing well offensively and got a lead, but we were making mistakes defensively."

Expect the Lakers to again look like fools after this one.

                  Pick: Dallas

Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffalo Sabres at Toronto Maple Leafs (101, 5.5)

Playoff implications aplenty at Air Canada Centre this weekend as both the Maple Leafs and the Sabres are alive in the hunt for the final seed in the East. So, an already heated rivalry has a little more spice.

                      Boy, oh Boyes!

The Sabres and their new ownership proved they meant business when they went out and acquired right wing Brad Boyes from the Blues. Boyes has a bloated salary, something Buffalo usually avoids, but he can put the puck in the net and figured to be key to any late run.

                      So far, so good.

Boyes scored in his Sabres’ debut, a 3-2 win over the Rangers on March 1, and hasn’t looked back. He has three goals and three assists in six games with Buffalo and, perhaps most important, the Sabres have points in five of those games. Forget No. 8 for a second, they actually woke up in seventh place in the East Friday.

Boyes had a goal and an assist in the Sabres’ 4-3 win over Boston Thursday and will enter this matchup with a little more incentive than usual. After all, he was a 2000 first-round pick of Toronto.

                      Slip, sliding away?

This time last week, all was well with the Maple Leafs. They were hot, they were scoring goals at opportune times and they took a nine-game point streak into a Hockey Night in Canada date versus Chicago.

Well, the Blackhawks blasted them, 5-3, in a game that wasn’t as close as the score and things haven’t been the same. All told, Toronto will take a three-game skid into this date with Buffalo and the Maple Leafs woke on Friday six points out of a playoff spot.

Perhaps the magic is wearing off a little on goaltender James Reimer. He’s lost all three of those games, allowing 12 goals.

                      History

Buffalo will always have a chip on its shoulder in this regional rivalry, as it will never be the more popular team. And this year, they Sabres are playing with that chip. They are 3-1 vs. Toronto and the under has hit in three of those four.

Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames (106, 5.5)

The West’s best second-half story, the Flames, play host to a familiar foe in a matchup that we might just see come playoff time.

Calgary is in the middle of the West postseason pack, but is just a minor skid away from the No. 8 seed, which would mean a seven-game beauty versus these Canucks. For now though, hockey bettors will settle for this nightcap.

                      On the rebound?

The Flames haven’t lost two in a row since Jan. 3-5, so you know they will be fired up for this one after dropping a 3-0 decision to Phoenix Thursday. Calgary played well enough versus the Coyotes, firing 39 shots, but could not dent Phoenix goalie Ilya Bryzgalov.

Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo won’t be much easier for the Flames. But they will have a home crowd behind them, a national audience and, let’s face it: This is a Calgary team that lost for only the second time in 12 games by virtue of that shutout. This is still a team that is playing good hockey and carries great betting value.

                      Marching through March

The Canucks stumbled just a bit in February and the prevailing thought was that maybe they were getting complacent at the top of the West. But March has silenced the critics, as they’ve already thrown up five wins and are just three points away from the magic 100 milestone.

While everyone else in the conference fights for seeding and their playoff lives overall, Vancouver should cruise to the President’s Trophy and home-ice advantage.

What happens from there, with this inconsistent postseason group, is anyone’s guess. For now, they are clearly a solid bet moving forward. As long as bettors can handle the price, of course.

                      Rocky Ryan

No one’s going to doubt Ryan Kesler’s magical, breakout season in Vancouver, but he hasn’t been the same since the All-Star break. He has 33 goals and is having his best campaign, but he has not scored in 11 games.

                      History

The Canucks have a good record against most Western teams, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they are 3-1 versus the Flames. What might surprise, considering Luongo and Calgary netminder Miikka Kiprusoff, is that the over is 3-1 in this series.

Detroit Red Wings at St. Louis Blues

The Red Wings may be ice cold, but the Blues are running out of warm bodies.

St. Louis will is expected to be without forwards David Perron, Vladimir Sobotka and Alexander Steen, along with stud defenseman Barret Jackman this weekend. Steen and Jackman both suffered their injuries in a 4-3 overtime win against Columbus on Wednesday night.

"It's an unfortunate accident for these guys," Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said. "I know how badly they want to be here to support the group and to set the framework for this group moving forward."

On the other bench, the Red Wings have dropped four straight entering the weekend, but three of those were on the road and each was against a potential playoff team. Even better for Detroit, it is expected to welcome back defenders Brad Stuart and Brian Rafalski from a pair of lower body injuries this weekend.

Both will be huge boosts for the team coming off a game against Edmonton on Friday night.

"We try to be solution-based and try to keep people accountable," said Detroit coach Mike Babcock. "I probably haven't done a good enough job because we're not playing at a high enough level individually or as a team. The buck stops here."

                        Pick: Detroit

Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames (106, 5.5)

The zamboni driver is going to have a lot of work to do on Saturday night as both teams figure to be tearing up and down the ice.

Calgary is 5-2 over its past seven games, scoring at least three goals in five of those contests. Vancouver has been just as deadly recently, claiming four straight by tickling the twine at least three times in each of those games.

In Calgary, the Flames have thrived over the past seven games thanks to the outstanding play of forwards Jarome Iginla (5 goals, 3 assists) and Renee Borque (4 goals, 2 assists). The duo has been as hot as nearly an tandem in the league and gives the team an elite scoring punch.

And with Calgary coming off a 3-0 loss in Phoenix, the team seems poised to rebound on the scoreboard.

“We’re not happy with our game tonight,” defenseman Mark Giordano said. “But we just have to move on and go on to the next one. At this time of year, you can’t dwell on these ones for too long.”

For the Canucks, the dynamic scoring of Henrik and Daniel Sedin has kept the team streaking. Over the past four games, Henrik has one goal and six assists while Daniel has three scores and four helpers.

“These guys don’t look so fast," Canucks forward Mikael Samuelsson said. "They’re not slow, but they’re not really fast. They’re smart. You look and say: ‘OK, what do they have?’ Then, all of a sudden, boom-boom it’s in the net.”

                        Pick: Over
