    Daily Sports Roundup: March 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Capitals play host to the Hurricanes, the Hawks look for a victory in Chicago, and the major college hoops tournaments continue.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up nine games on Friday, with the Clippers at New Jersey, Boston at Philadelphia, Indiana at Toronto, Portland at Charlotte, Utah at Minnesota, Detroit at Oklahoma City, Sacramento at San Antonio, Orlando at Golden State, and Atlanta at Chicago. The Hawks will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak on Friday; Atlanta was thumped 101-87 by the Lakers in their most recent game on Tuesday night. The Bulls beat Charlotte 101-84 on the road in their last game on Wednesday, but they fell 83-80 as a 4-point road favorite when they met the Hawks back on March 2. Al Horford led Atlanta with 31 points that night; Luol Deng tossed in 15 points for Chicago.

The ACC, Big Ten, and SEC tournaments reach their quarterfinal rounds in college hoops conference action on Friday, while the Big 12, Mountain West, Pac-10, and Big East tournaments offer up semifinal matchups. No. 21 Connecticut will take on No. 11 Syracuse in one of those Big East contests at Madison Square Garden, as the Huskies upset No. 3 Pittsburgh 76-74 in quarterfinal action on Thursday. Kemba Walker led the way with 24 points for Connecticut in that victory, while Jeremy Lamb tossed in 17 points. The Orange got past St. John's 79-73 in their quarterfinal matchup on Thursday, with Brandon Tiche pouring in 22 points. Connecticut played host to Syracuse during the regular season, getting beat 66-58 on February 2 despite a 22-point contest from Lamb.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are eight games on the NHL's Friday schedule, with Boston at the Islanders, Los Angeles at Columbus, Edmonton at Detroit, Ottawa at Tampa Bay, New Jersey at Atlanta, Minnesota at Dallas, Anaheim at Colorado, and Carolina at Washington. The Hurricanes are coming off a 3-2 home overtime loss to Atlanta on Wednesday night, while the Capitals blanked the Oilers 5-0 at home in their last outing on Wednesday. Carolina and Washington last met on December 26, with the Capitals winning 3-2 as a road favorite in that UNDER result. Alex Ovechkin, Mathieu Perreault, and Dave Steckel had the goals for Washington that night, while Jussi Jokinen and Tuomo Ruutu replied for the Hurricanes. Cam Ward stopped 27 of 30 shots for Carolina

Friday's betting tips: Can Walker carry UConn again?

      Who’s hot

NCAAB: Xavier has covered in seven of its last eight games and has won its last nine outright.

NHL: Washington has won six straight games and has also beaten Carolina in four straight meetings.

NHL: The under is 8-0-2 in New Jersey’s last 10 and has taken the cash in six of Atlanta’s last seven games. The Devils and Thrashers square off Friday night.

NBA: The over has cashed in on Oklahoma City’s last four games and five of Detroit’s last six contests have played over heading into Friday’s meeting between the two teams.

      Who’s not

NCAAB: Michigan State has covered in just two of its last 10 matchups with Purdue.

NHL: Phoenix has won just once over the last seven games.

NBA: Indiana is 1-8 straight up over its last nine games, covering only twice over that span.

NBA: The Los Angeles Lakers have covered just twice over their last nine games.

      Key stat

4 – The Boston Celtics have allowed at least 100 points in four of their last five games after giving up 100 only once over the previous 18 contests. Meanwhile five of the club’s last six games have played over their posted totals.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Andrei Kirilenko, Utah Jazz – Kirilenko is still bothered by a bad back, and is considered a game-time decision when the Jazz take on the Timberwolves on Friday night. He's averaging 12 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.

      Game of the day

      Connecticut at Syracuse (N/A)

      Notable quotable

"I've never been one to hope for things or wish for things or anything like that, but I admit I was praying a little bit." – Kansas coach Bill Self on his team’s 63-62 win over Oklahoma State on Thursday, which likely assured the Jayhawks a No. 1 seed. Kansas was leading by a single point with just 48 seconds but managed to hang on. The Jayhawks were set as fat 13.5-point favorites and will face Colorado on Friday.

      Notes and tips

Kemba Walker did it again on Thursday, dropping 24 points and hitting the game-winning shot at the buzzer to lead the UConn Huskies to a stunning 76-74 win over Pitt as 5.5-point underdogs. "In my mind, the most important player to his team in the country made another winning shot, a big-time shot," UConn coach Jim Calhoun said. "We gave him options, and he called his own number. Kemba has made a ton of big shots." Now, Walker and the Huskies square off against rival Syracuse on Friday at MSG.

The Portland Trail Blazers have won and covered in each of their last four games, including an impressive victory over the Heat the last time they took the floor. The streak coincides with a good stretch from the ailing Brandon Roy, who played his first back-to-back of the season earlier this week. Roy managed to play the whole fourth quarter against the Magic and said after that his sore knees didn’t keep him from slashing into the paint and to get the ball to the rim. The Trail Blazers look to keep it going Friday in Charlotte before finishing their road swing in Atlanta on Saturday.

Despite his hamstring problems, Stephen Jackson was able to practice on Thursday and is expected to suit up for Friday’s game when Charlotte takes on Portland. The Bobcats desperately need him to help out their struggling offense. Charlotte has dropped six straight games, failing to crack 90 points in any of those contests. Oddsmakers have yet to set a line for Friday’s game but Portland has covered in each of its last four matchups with Charlotte.

        Friday's six-pack

-- Miami Heat snapped their five-game skid, beating the Lakers at home thanks to their bench. All Heat's subs had good plus/minus numbers; all the Lakers' subs were on the negative side.

-- Mavericks beat the Knicks by 18 in Dallas; New York was +3 in the 24:00 Jared Jeffires played, -21 in the 24:00 he didn't play.

-- I don't have an opinion on this, I'm just asking, but is it possible the Carmelo Anthony trade made the Nuggets a better team? Denver won by 19 at Phoenix Thursday- they're playing pretty well.

-- Seahawks/Trailblazers owner Paul Allen is worth $13.5B, making him the richest owner in the NFL. Thats billion, with a B.

-- Had to be a weird day for Carl Crawford, playing an exhibition game against the Rays, the only team he's played on until this year.

-- My thoughts/prayers to people of Japan after both an earthquake and a tsunami hit there overnight. The images on CNN aren't good.

Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college basketball Thursday......

        13) 13 hours and 50 minutes of live basketball on TV, interrupted only by a shower after the third Big East game-- Thursday of Championship Week is always one of the best days of the year, and this year wasn't an exception. Lot of good action today, with more on the way Friday.......

        12) In the last 11 years, six of the nine Mountain West teams have won the conference tournament at least once.

        11) Klay Thompson set a new Pac-10 tourney record with 43 points, but it wasn't enough as Washington beat Wazzu 89-87 in a fun game to see, unless you bet the under.

        10) Conference USA is a quagmire, with top-seeded UAB going out in the first round against East Carolina, which lost its point guard in the process. No sympathy for the Blazers Sunday night; you have no gripes if you do not win at least one game in your conference tournament.

Odd thing in Memphis-Southern Miss game; both teams got technicals for dunking during warmups, so game was 2-1 Memphis before center jump. Memphis beat the Eagles for third time this year, all in close games.

        9) UConn's Kemba Walker is carrying his Huskies in the Big East, much like Gerry McNamara once did for Syracuse and Randolph Childress did for Wake Forest. Whenever UConn needs points, Walker seems to score.

        8) Miami, OH trailed 26-10 at halftime to Akron, 26 to freakin' 10, but in second half, Miami rallied, sent game to OT, but lost 82-75 to the Zips, who are coached by Keith Dambrot, Lebron James' high school coach.

        7) Terrible day for St John's, which lost to Syracuse on same afternoon it lost DJ Kennedy to a torn ACL. Kennedy's loss is tough to overcome.

        6) Syracuse has won four Big East tournaments, but was never seeded higher than third in any of those four years.

        5) Pitt is now 0-3 in Big East tournament games when they had a double bye which of course is considered a reward for a fine season.

        4) Rice has an odd roster, with players from Iran/Egypt and a transfer who started his career at the US Naval Academy. They must have some interesting conversations at team meals.

        3) Heard an announcer call a 3-point shot "from the bonus sphere" after it went in. Sometimes, simple is better. This was one of those times.

        2) Watching body language can help you handicap; some teams look like they're toast for this season, that they've just had enough. We're hoping these teams stick around long enough for us to pick against all of them.

        1) If you bet Virginia +3 Thursday, maybe it wasn't such a fun day, with Cavaliers blowing a 10-point lead in last 0:42 of regulation, then losing by 7 in OT to the Miami Hurricanes. Stuff like that can ruin a day.

                    NBA

Orlando Magic at Golden State Warriors (4.5, 207.5)

The Orlando Magic snapped a two-game losing streak by slipping by Sacramento on Wednesday with Dwight Howard back in the lineup after he served a one-game suspension.

But they weren’t happy about it.

Orlando had to hold on when Howard fouled out late in the game and the 106-102 victory as a 10-point favorite was far from impressive.

"We didn't play well," point guard Jameer Nelson told reporters. "If we think it's OK, it's not. We have to change what we do. It's not on anybody but us. It's not on offense; it's on defense. We can't flip the switch for the playoffs. We're not good enough."

Nelson has a point, but we like Orlando at this number on Friday. The Magic head into this matchup having won five straight games against the Warriors, who have only two wins in their last nine games.

                    Pick: Orlando

                    NCAAB

Illinois Fighting Illini at Michigan Wolverines (3, 126)

The Illini and Wolverines are both on the NCAA bubble and looking for a big victory Friday so they can breathe a little easier.

The young Wolverines have been one of the nation’s best betting teams at 18-8 against the number this year and battled it out in a 54-52 loss against Illinois as a 9.5-underdog on Feb. 16.

"They got work to do," Illinois center Mike Tisdale told reporters of the Wolverines. "It's not going to be easy for any of us. They're not going to come in and lay down. I would like to say we are [in the tournament,] but we do have work to do. We're not going to lie down. We're going to play, and we're going to play to win."

It’s hard to ignore that the Wolverines have dropped just one game against the spread over their last 11 and you have to like the way Tim Hardaway Jr. is playing lately. He’s putting up 22 points over the last four games and we think he could lead the club to a mild upset here.

                    Pick: Michigan

Anaheim Ducks at Colorado Avalanche (+110, 5.5)

When Anaheim has its top line of Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf and Bobby Ryan rolling, there aren’t many teams in the NHL that can match their firepower.

The trio combined for eight points and finished plus-10 in a 5-2 win over the New York Rangers on Wednesday, the team’s fourth win in its last five games.

Anaheim needs to keep putting solid stretches of wins together to keep pace in the Western Conference, but the Colorado Avalanche are in freefall after a good start to the season.

Colorado is just 1-13-2 since the All-Star break.

"We're not trying to tank to get a top-five pick," Avalanche center Matt Duchene told reporters. "We already have a lot of great prospects in the system. Wherever we pick we're going to get a good player, but that's not on our mind right now. We just want to win."

That’s going to be a lot to ask of the Avalanche against Anaheim.

                              Pick: Anaheim

Edmonton Oilers at Detroit Red Wings (-285, 5.5)

You don’t see the Detroit Red Wings suffer through a four-game losing streak very often and they have a great chance to end their current skid against the Oilers in this spot.

Detroit was better in its latest loss, a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Kings, and coach Mike Babcock is trying to stay positive during this slump.

"It was a tight game, we had every opportunity to win the game, we didn't find a way," Babcock told reporters. "We've just got to keep playing like that and starting like we did and getting pucks ahead and shooting pucks and going to the net."

They shouldn’t have any problems doing that against the Oilers. Detroit has scored 11 times over its last two meetings with Edmonton and has managed at least 30 shots on goal in its last 10 games against the Oilers.

At this price, your best bet is the over.

                              Pick: Over
