Double dribble: NBA TNT doubleheader betting preview
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Miami Heat (+2, 188)

The Heat have been wretched against good teams this season, but one of their best wins came at the Staples Center on Christmas Day.

As a 3.5-point underdog, Miami laughed at the spread and hammered the Lakers 96-80 as LeBron James delivered a triple-double. LeBron scored a game-high 27 points, dished out 11 of his team’s impressive 25 assists, and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Miami’s “Big 3” combined for 69 points while Mario Chalmers chipped in 13. Kobe Bryant had an afternoon to forget, going 6 of 16 from the floor for 17 points. Pau Gasol also scored 17 but it was nowhere near enough to overcome the Heat, who got 18 first-half points from Chris Bosh and never trailed after an early 8-7 L.A. lead.

          Tears of the sun

Perhaps you thought it could not get any worse for the Heat (43-21, 29-34-1 ATS) when they dropped a pair of home games to New York and Orlando last week. But then they got blown out 125-95 at San Antonio one day after losing to the Magic.

Surely that was rock bottom, right? Wrong. They promptly lost again at home Sunday, this time 87-86 to Chicago, after more late-game failings by LeBron and Dwayne Wade. Head coach Erik Spoelstra said afterward that some of his guys were crying in the locker room.

Improbably, it still got worse for Miami after that. The spiraling team fell at home, again, to Portland, 105-96. That loss extended the Heat’s losing streak to five. They have not covered a single spread in their last seven outings and they have not beat a team above .500 (and nobody better than 27-36 Indiana) since February 3.

Miami will have plenty of incentive for Thursday’s showdown, and not just because it’s yet another chance to get over the hump against a top team. Los Angeles head coach Phil Jackson joined in the cry-gate fun Wednesday.

“This is the NBA: No Boys Allowed,” Jackson joked to the Los Angeles Times. “Big boys don't cry. But if you're going to do it, do it in the toilet where no one sees you.”

The Lakers (46-19, 32-32-1 ATS) have had no need to cry lately. With the Heat are streaking in the wrong direction, L.A. extended its winning surge to five games with a 101-87 victory at Atlanta Tuesday.

          Trending topics

          - The Lakers are 7-1 ATS in their last eight overall and 5-0 ATS in their last five road games.

          - The Heat are 0-7 ATS in their last seven overall and 0-5 ATS in their last five home games.

          - Head-to-head, Miami is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings. The under is 5-1 in the last six encounters at AmericanAirlines Arena.

New York Knicks at Dallas Mavericks (-7, 215.5)

If you thought the Christmas clash between the Lakers and Heat was a potential NBA Finals preview, perhaps you should have tuned in on February 2 instead. That’s when the Knicks and Mavericks squared off in New York for their first of two meetings during the regular season. As a 2-point underdog at Madison Square Garden, Dallas dominated the second and third quarters to prevail 113-97.

Of course, this is a much different Knicks team now. Danilo Gallinari, who led the Knicks with 27 points in the loss to Dallas, is a Denver Nugget. New York, which got 21 points from Amare Stoudemire and 22 from backup guard Toney Douglas, was obviously without recently-acquired Carmelo Anthony. The Mavericks owned the glass to the tune of a 54 to 34 rebounding margin while Dirk Nowitzki led five Dallas players in double figures with 29 points.

Both the Knicks (at Memphis) and Mavericks (at New Orleans) have zero days of rest heading into Thursday’s showdown. New York is a respectable 9-6 (11-3-1 ATS) in the second of back-to-back games this season while Dallas is a stellar 10-4 (9-5 ATS).

          Four games in five nights

The Mavericks (46-17, 34-27-2 ATS) may have trouble staying in the present on Thursday night, because they have a lot on their plate both in the past and the future. Not only will it be Dallas’ fourth game in five nights, but the team also has a showdown against the Lakers coming up on Saturday.

“It's going to test us mentally and physically,” guard Jason Terry told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram before the stretch started. “It's going to tell you a lot about your team this late in the season playing four in five nights. We're going to see what we're made of. But I think we're up for the task and we're excited.”

So far, the Mavericks are 1-1 (0-2 ATS). They lost 104-103 at home to Memphis on a buzzer beater from Zach Randolph before winning 108-105 at Minnesota Monday.

“Even though it's a home game, I see trouble ahead against New York on Thursday,” said Eddie Sefko, beat writer for the Dallas Morning News. “The Mavericks will be finishing their four-game, five-night run. They will have spent themselves Wednesday night in New Orleans against the Hornets and they also will have a human-nature battle on their hand to keep from looking forward to the Lakers.”

What Sefko may not know, though, is that the Knicks (33-29, 38-22-2 ATS) will also be wrapping up a four-game, five-night stretch. The streak of games is certainly not doing any favors for Chauncey Billups, who has missed four straight games with a quadriceps injury and is listed as questionable as of Wednesday afternoon.

          Trending topics

          - The Knicks are 5-1 ATS in their last six overall.

          - The over is 16-5 in the Mavericks’ last 21 overall and 5-0 in their last five when they play on zero day’s rest.

          - Head-to-head, in the last five meetings the road team is 5-0 ATS and the over is 4-1.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Thursday's best NHL bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at St. Louis Blues (-102, 5.5)

The Canadiens are one of the hottest teams in the NHL having won five games in a row, so why will they be playing like men possessed against St. Louis on Thursday?

Montreal is coming off a 4-1 win over Boston on Tuesday that was marred by a vicious Zdeno Chara hit on Habs forward Max Pacioretty. It sent Pacioretty (14 goals, 10 assists) into one of the upright posts that supports plexiglass in between the teams’ benches and knocked him unconscious. Pacioretty is out indefinitely with—at the very least—a concussion.

“The most important thing for us is that Max will recover and be back with us soon,” Lars Eller, who scored a pair of goals in the game, told the Montreal Gazette. “We’re happy for the win. We played a real good team game. It was hard to stay focused after the injury but at least we know now that he’s talking and he can move all his body parts and that makes it feel better.”

Incident aside, the Canadiens should also be feeling good about their current level of play. Their only loss in seven outings was a 5-4 nail-biter against Toronto on February 24. Montreal is up to sixth place in the Eastern Conference and has a 10-point cushion on a playoff spot.

St. Louis, on the other hand, is 10 points out of a playoff spot at 13th place in the Western Conference. The Blues have lost four of their last five games and seven of their last nine.

                Pick: Montreal

Philadelphia Flyers at Toronto Maple Leafs (126, 5.5)

The Flyers had a big lead in the Eastern Conference (and still have a smaller lead), which is perhaps why they did not look particularly interested during their recent four-game losing streak.

But head coach Peter Laviolette would have no more of it after an especially embarrassing loss to the Rangers, 7-0 on Sunday. Laviolette gave his team the day off on Monday and Philadelphia responded on Tuesday by ending the slump and beating Edmonton 4-1.

"We had plenty of gas in the tank tonight," Laviolette told the Philadelphia Courier-Post.

Or maybe it was just that Edmonton is simply god-awful; the worst team in the NHL to be exact (with a miniscule 54 points).

We will find out more about the Flyers on Thursday when they visit a Toronto team that is not much better than mediocre, but one that is at least fighting for a playoff spot (four points out in the East).

The Maple Leafs have won only two of their last six contests, but they scored fewer than three goals only once in that span. Toronto is not one of the best at capitalizing on power plays, but the team has created 274 man advantages—second in the NHL behind Tampa Bay.

                Pick: Toronto

Odds to win American League West: Can Rangers repeat?

Texas was a surprise World Series participant last season and has nearly all the pieces returning from the American League’s fourth-best offense at 4.85 runs per game. But without Cliff Lee in the rotation, a return trip to the Fall Classic is remote.

Oakland had the league’s lowest ERA in 2010 and an upgraded lineup makes the A’s a contender. The Los Angeles Angels came up empty in free agency and have question marks throughout their roster. Seattle had the worst offense in the junior circuit by 100 total runs and did virtually nothing to improve a miserable situation.

                  Los Angeles Angels

                  Last season record: 80-82
Projected season win total: O/U 83
Odds to win AL West: +263

                  Biggest loss: OF/DH Hideki Matsui
                  Biggest addition: LHR Scott Downs

Angels outlook: Remember Angels’ baseball when it featured players on base continually? That style came to an abrupt halt last season. Run production fell 29.6 percent without a true leadoff man and enough hitters on the lineup card that hit for contact and average. Last year was the first time in 49 years the Halos did not have a single regular starter hitting .300 or better. The return of Kendry Morales will help add potency to the batting order and, based on spring training results, manager Mike Scioscia will have to get Mark Trumbo on the scorecard the way he is crushing the ball.

To start the season, Scioscia will pin his hopes on AL West’s best starting staff. Dan Haren and Joel Pineiro placed too much pressure on themselves a season ago and both have expressed a greater comfort level and should fit nicely with ace Jered Weaver and Ervin Santana. If the bullpen becomes settled, it could be a winning campaign.

Season win total pick: Over 83

                  Oakland Athletics

                  Last season record
                  : 81-81
Projected season win total: O/U 83.5
Odds to win AL West: +194

                  Biggest loss: DH Jack Cust
Biggest addition: OF David DeJesus, DH Hideki Matsui

A’s outlook: For the all the love the San Francisco Giants deservedly received, Oakland’s starting pitchers had the lowest ERA (3.47) in the majors in two decades (Boston -1990). General manager Billy Beane sees the similarities with his young studs and is convinced his talented hurlers can match their cross-town rivals’ success, with a bullpen possibly as proficient. Top starter Trevor Cahill permitted right-hand batters to hit only .198 and he has just turned 21 years old. Brett Anderson, Dallas Braden and Gio Gonzalez still have ample room to improve according to Cactus League scouts.

Oakland was 11th in runs scored (4.09) per game and next-to-last in home runs in the AL. The additions of Hideki Matsui, David DeJesus and Josh Willingham is an upgrade to a pitiful offense, however, none of these players have been able to stay healthy. Manager Bob Geren understands this team has to hit for a better average, as it will take three hits to score a run most nights.

Season win total pick: Under 83.5

                  Seattle Mariners

                  Last season record
                  : 61-101
Projected season win total: O/U 70
Odds to win AL West: +2,314

Biggest loss: 1B Casey Kotchman, 3B Jose Lopez
Biggest addition: C Miguel Olivo, DH Jack Cust

Mariners outlook: Seattle’s past four seasons have been served hot and cold like the coffee the city is known for. The hot years of 2007 and 2009 produced 88 and 85 wins respectively and the cold campaigns of 2008 and 2010 registered a mere 61 victories. The Mariners offense was offensive, registering numbers not seen in the AL in 20 to 30 years. The unusual part is GM Jack Zduriencik did almost nothing to add punch. Designated hitter Jack Cust will strikeout a ton and hit some homers and catcher Migeul Olivo will quickly find out the difference between Safeco Field and Coors Field. New youngsters will dot the roster around Ichiro Suziki.

Felix Hernandez’s talents are being wasted on a club that can’t score and the dropoff from him to the No. 2 and No. 3 starters is like jumping into the Grand Canyon. Dave Aardsma is a reliable closer, however, the bullpen might not give the right-hander too many leads to work with. The biggest positive might be the defensive outfielders’ ability to track down opponents’ swings of the bat.

Season win total pick: Under 70

                  Texas Rangers

                  Last season record
                  : 90-72
Projected season win total: O/U 86.5
Odds to win AL West: +125

                  Biggest loss: DH Vladimir Guerrero
Biggest addition: 3B Adrian Beltre, LHR Arthur Rhodes

Rangers outlook: It was a banner year for the American League champion Texas Rangers, however, with success comes expectations. Texas’ scoring didn’t catch anyone off guard, but the 3.93 ERA (tied for third in AL) brought a collective “wow” from baseball. There is a great deal of consternation if the Rangers starting staff can duplicate last year’s efforts. Colby Lewis was a revelation returning from Japan and former closer C.J. Wilson took over No. 1 spot in the rotation. Tommy Hunter, at 24 years old, was 13-4 with 3.73 ERA. Even the Rangers front office was not positive this trio can manufacture same results and toyed with the idea of making closer Neftali Felix a starter.

The offense is poised to put up solid numbers again, led by Josh Hamilton’s amazing skill set. He needs to stay healthy, as does outfielder Nelson Cruz and second baseman Ian Kinsler. New third baseman Adrian Beltre regained his stroke in Fenway Park last year and will find Rangers Ballpark equally friendly. Texas will try to duplicate last season’s 71-47 record under the lights.

Season win total pick: Over 86.5
