Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Blues at Columbus Blue Jackets (-130, 5.5)

Two words on why you should back the Blues: Jaroslav Halak.

The goalie was activated from injured reserve on Tuesday and is expected to make his return to the ice on Wendesday as he has finished recovering from a hand injury. Halak has a modest 2.63 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage this year, but he is among the best in the league when he is on his game.

However, he has been out since Valentine’s Day.

"In Jaro's situation," Blues coach Davis Payne said, "getting some good performances under his belt, and finishing strong always gives you a foundation for success and it starts back for him tomorrow night."
Payne added that the team does not think conditioning will be an issue and he feels Halak can be the difference as the team scraps for a final playoff spot.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets are coming off a 5-4 shootout loss to the Blues on Monday night and have been anything but consistent lately. Columbus has dropped five straight games and yielded 18 goals over that span.

“It was tough, we had a couple chances but we just couldn’t bury them when we could,” forward Rick Nash said. “It is a matter of getting it done in big opportunities and not folding our cards.”

      Pick: St. Louis

Calgary Flames at Dallas Stars (-125, 5.5)

The Flames have done so much scoring the past few weeks that opposing goalies are starting to get sunburn on the back of their necks from all the flashing red lights.

Calgary is 4-1 over its past five games and has notched 18 goals over that span. The team has been led offensively by a reborn Jerome Iginla, who is again staking his claim as one of the team’s elite forwards. Iginla, the league’s star of the week, has five goals and three assists during his team’s recent hot streak.

"Through this whole process, we've been getting contributions from everyone and different times different guys have stepped up," said Calgary coach Brent Sutter.

And whether it’s Iginla or a fourth-line winger, no one on the Flames has had trouble scoring against Dallas this season. Calgary is 3-0 this year against the Stars, outscoring them 14-8. In those games, Iginla has just a single goal and two assists.

Imagine what the Flames can do now that he is hot.

"He’s a well-conditioned athlete," Sutter said of Iginla. "He trains extremely hard. He understands the importance of being in top shape. The older you get, you have to work that much harder. He understands that. His shot, his intelligence in the offensive zone, all gets added into to allow him to be that type of goal-scorer.”

      Pick: Calgary

Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best basketball bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Philadelphia 76ers (-1, 208)

If this was supposed to be a growing-up season for the Thunder, they still have plenty of room left to fill out in their britches. The mark of a true championship-caliber team is its ability to play on the road, and Oklahoma City has failed to live up to those expectations.

The Thunder are a mediocre 5-5 SU and ATS in their past 10 away games. In their most recent game on an opponent’s hardwood, Oklahoma City was handled by Memphis, 107-101. In four of the team’s five losses, it has surrendered 100 or more points.

"We got down 17 because our defensive effort wasn't where it needed to be," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "We gave them too many easy layups and points around the paint. We got back into it because we made some shots, but we still weren't playing the defense that it takes to win in this league."

And the balanced 76ers can’t wait to take advantage of those easy baskets. Philadelphia is 8-2 SU and 7-3 ATS in its past 10 games thanks to a diverse attack. Five players average double-figures and seven average above 7.5 points per game. In the team’s most recent win, a 125-117 overtime win against Golden State, the team had seven players in double digits with top scorers Evan Turner (20 points), Thaddeus Young (20 points) and Lou Williams (19 points) each coming off the bench.

              Pick: Philadelphia

Detroit Pistons at San Antonio Spurs (-11.5, 203)

The Spurs have the league’s best record by beating nearly all challengers this season. But they haven’t been very successful when they are installed as a large favorite.

San Antonio is a mere 3-7 ATS as a double-digit favorite this season. And it’s not like the team has exactly been playing well, either. The Spurs are 7-3 SU but just 4-6 ATS in their past 10 games overall. Even more telling, the team has been pasted by 16 points twice in its past four games, including its most recent--a 99-83 beatdown from the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers.

“They were more physical then we were and very aggressive,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “I thought that we picked up our physicality and defense in the second half but that was way too late—we were down too far.”

On the other bench, Detroit is coming off a 113-102 win over the Wizards. The Pistons are just 3-7 SU in their past 10 but are a respectable 5-5 ATS over that span. Detroit also may not be good at much this season, but the team has remained competitive by scoring the ball. Over the team’s past 10 games, it has cracked the 100-point mark seven times.

              Pick: Detroit
