Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at Toronto Maple Leafs (+110, 5.5)

Hot, hot, hot. That is the theme at the Air Canada Centre. This Original Six matchup features two of the league’s surging teams as we step into March.

                A surprising swing

One would think that Kris Versteeg, of all players, would know what the Maple Leafs are capable of. After all, he was one of them until two weeks ago. But even he is a bit taken aback by the run Toronto is on. The Maple Leafs have won two straight, six out of nine and have at least one point in all nine games.

“I think it’s a little surprising to see them play this well down the stretch here. Here’s a team that really not much was expected from them,” said Versteeg, traded to the Flyers last month. “They have some young guys up there now, and they’re really playing well. They’ve really showed the league that they’re not going anywhere, and that they’re forcing other teams to respect them.”

The Flyers should know. Toronto beat them, 3-2, in Philadelphia Thursday night. That came a day after the Maple Leafs outlasted the Penguins by the same score.

“Well, they’re definitely ramped up and ready to go these days,” Versteeg said. “Every game for them is a big game, and they’re playing with that sense of desperation. If you’re playing them down the stretch here, you’re going to need to match that intensity.”

A word to the wise for the Blackhawks.

                Thinking repeat, after all?

Speaking of Chicago, the kind of hockey we saw last summer in the Stanley Cup playoffs has finally returned. The Blackhawks, despite their salary-cap casualties in the offseason and their injures in season, have put themselves in a decent position in the wild West.

The Blackhawks, who defeated the Flames 6-4 on Wednesday, had won six in a row and seven of nine leading into Friday’ home game versus the Hurricanes.

In fact, as play began on Friday, they were nine points behind Detroit for the Central lead, but were in a three-way tie for the No. 4 seed. Of course, that four spot would be huge, because it means home ice in the first round.

                History

These teams don’t probably play often enough for Original Six buffs. But the history they do have together is certainly slanted toward the Blackhawks.

Chicago has won the last five meetings in this series, dating back to 2004. Meanwhile, the under is 6-2-1 in the last nine installments.

Edmonton Oilers at Colorado Avalanche (-145, 5.5)

The Hockey Night in Canada crew will have to be at its best to make this game appealing. The two teams occupying the bottom two spots in the Western Conference is the not-so-hot nightcap this weekend.

                Can’t shake the slump

The Avalanche just can’t break the funk that has gripped them for weeks now. Despite some transactions to shake things up, they’ve lost four in a row and 14 out of 15 dating back to January.

In a run where no one seems to be allowing many goals out West, Colorado has given up 12 in the last four games.

The Avalanche have two days off after this one, before meeting Minnesota Tuesday. Perhaps the rest may be the best tonic.

                Taking the tough trek

This might be the perfect setup for Edmonton. The Oilers, winners of two straight, get a chance to kick a team while it’s down and really build confidence just in time for a long road trip against the league’s best.

After this game, the Oilers will play four more road contests in the next eight days, all against elite teams. We’ll truly see how far this young team has come when they play the Flyers, Capitals, Red Wings and Penguins in a short timeframe.

                Oilers ouch!

It hasn’t been all good news for the Oilers. Star rookie Taylor Hall injured his ankle after getting in a fight with Derek Dorsett Thursday night, posting a "Gordie Howe hat trick" with a goal and an assist in the win over Columbus. Hall left the game and was seen limping with a walking boot on afterwards. He is questionable for Saturday's action.

Right wing Ales Hemsky will miss three weeks with a shoulder injury he suffered in a 2-1 victory over Nashville Tuesday.

                History

The Oilers have won three of the last four, including a 5-1 whitewash on Feb. 23. The over has hit in three out of the last four installments in this series, as well as six out of the last eight.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Oilers at Colorado Avalanche (-145, 5.5)

Tom Renney is a coach known for building a strong team concept within his dressing room and inspiring his players to play above their potential.

So he wasn’t surprised when 19-year-old rookie sniper Taylor Hall got into the first fight of his NHL career after picking up a goal and an assist in Thursday’s 4-2 win over Columbus. While Hall’s feistiness was applauded, the cheering didn’t last long as he suffered an ankle injury when he and Derek Dorsett fell to the ice.

"I've never had (a 'Gordie Howe hat trick')," Hall said of scoring a goal with an assist and a fight in the same game. "I don't know if I want to have too many more, especially with the repercussions."

The Oilers were bracing themselves for the worst news possible about the injury and recent reports indicate he’ll be out for the rest of the season with a high ankle sprain.

While Edmonton’s offense takes a hit without Hall, neither of these teams play any defense and their goaltending isn’t any better.

                  Pick: Over

St. Louis Blues at New York Islanders (-120, 5.5)

The Blues began this season with just one regulation loss in their first 12 games, but it’s been all downhill since then. The Islanders, meanwhile, were the laughingstock of the league early on though they are now showing some serious promise within their young lineup.

New York has lost just three times in regulation over the last 12 games and the club hasn't had a cupcake schedule, either. The Isles took Philadelphia and Washington to overtime recently before snapping a four-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory over a Minnesota Wild club that is desperate to stay in the playoff picture.

"Once we got our legs under us and started doing the right things, we were a pretty good hockey team," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. "Give credit to the guys – they're battling, they're doing the right things, they're playing within the team concept and they're working hard."

Don’t expect anything less than that from the Islanders on Saturday.

                  Pick: New York
