Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Carolina Hurricanes at Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks are scoring lots and lots of goals. As it just so happens, that is translating to lots and lots of wins.

Chicago is averaging just a hair under four goals per game over its past eight, scoring at least three goals in each of those games. Not surprisingly, the team is 7-1 during that span and has reasserted itself as a threat to defend its Stanley Cup championship.

Over this hot streak, the team has been led by standout forwards Jonathan Toews (6 goals, 7 assists), Patrick Kane (5 goals, 5 assists) and Patrick Sharp (2 goals, 7 assists).

"We're not doing it as a streak my any means," Toews said. "We've been doing a great job of taking one game at a time, especially coming back from the All-Star break. It's been since then that we've gradually gotten better every night."

His coach agrees. "Johnny's got it going," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. "He's finishing well. He's a horse out there."

And don’t expect Carolina to be able to put him in the stable. The Hurricanes are just 4-6 in their past 10 games. In the losses, the team has given up 20 goals, including at least three on five occasions.

        Pick: Chicago

        Dallas Stars at Anaheim Ducks

Dan Ellis isn’t regarded as one of the better goalies in the NHL, but it’s hard to imagine him being any more valuable for the Ducks the past two games.

Due to issues with Jonas Hiller and the abysmal play of backup Curtis McElhinney, the team shipped its No. 2 keeper to Tampa Bay for Ellis. The move has paid huge dividends for the Ducks, who were falling apart at the seams with their disaster between the pipes. Before acquiring Ellis, the team had lost five straight games with McElhinney in goal after Hiller was put on IR with chronic fatigue.

In those games, the team coughed up a whopping 27 total goals.

Since Ellis took over last week, the team has won two straight over the Red Wings and Avalanche. In those victories, Ellis stopped 50 of 53 shots he faced.

“Here, you just try to figure out the same tendencies,” Ellis said. “It’ll take a few more games to figure it out for sure, but overall, this D corps is one of the best D corps I’ve ever played with - and they communicate better than anyone I’ve ever played with.”

And with stud center Brad Richards still on the shelf for Dallas, don’t like for the Stars to get many chances to prove Ellis wrong.

        Pick: Anaheim
