    Daily Sports Roundup: March 4

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NBA offers up action on a pair of continents, while Princeton and Harvard compete on separate courts, and the Ducks host the Stars.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Raptors and Nets hit the road to start a two-game series in London, England in NBA action on Friday afternoon, while the league's night slate then features Minnesota at Philadelphia, Cleveland at New York, Oklahoma City at Atlanta, Golden State at Boston, New Orleans at Memphis, Phoenix at Milwaukee, Indiana at Dallas, Charlotte at the Lakers, Miami at San Antonio, and Chicago at Orlando. The Bulls and Magic last met on January 28 in Chicago, with the home side winning 99-90 as a 1.5-point underdog in that UNDER result. Derrick Rose picked up 22 points and 12 assists for the Bulls in that win, while Luol Deng was good for 26 points, and Carlos Boozer grabbed 16 boards. Dwight Howard poured in 40 points to go along with 15 boards for the Magic.

College hoops action on Friday then includes tournament action in such conferences as the Missouri Valley, West Coast, and Horizon, while Princeton (22-5 SU, 11-8 ATS) and Harvard (21-5 SU, 9-8 ATS) continue their duel for the Ivy League crown at separate venues. Princeton sits at 10-1 in conference play, and they'll be on the road against Dartmouth (5-21 SU, 5-9 ATS) on Friday night. Harvard is just back of the Tigers at 10-2 in Ivy League action, and they'll host Pennsylvania (12-13 SU, 8-6 ATS) on Friday night. Harvard lost 70-69 to Yale last time out to fall to second place in the Ivy League standings, but they'll play host to Princeton in their last game of the season on Saturday.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL has five games on tap for Friday, with Pittsburgh at New Jersey, the Rangers at Ottawa, Carolina at Chicago, Columbus at Calgary, and Dallas at Anaheim. The Stars improved to 34-23-6 on the season with a 3-2 win in Phoenix in their last game on Tuesday night. Jamie Benn scored the winner for the Stars with just five seconds left in that contest, while Kari Lehtonen stopped 25 of 27 Phoenix shots. The Stars are 1-2 against the Ducks so far this season, but they won 2-1 at home as a -145 favorite when the teams last met on November 16. Brad Richards and Steve Ott had the goals for Dallas in that night's win, while Corey Perry had the lone goal for Anaheim.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

      Who’s hot

NHL: The Blackhawks are 6-0 in their last six overall.

NCAAB: UNC-Greensboro is 9-2-3 ATS in its last 14 overall and 9-1-3 ATS in its last 13 against the Southern Conference.

NBA: The Mavericks are 7-1 ATS in their last eight overall.

NBA: The under is 4-0 in the Nets’ last four overall and 10-1 in the Spurs’ last 11 home games.

      Who’s not

NHL: The Penguins are 1-5 in their last six overall and 1-6 in their last seven against the Eastern Conference.

NCAAB: Siena is 3-12 ATS in its last 15 overall.

NBA: The under is 4-0 in the Bulls’ last four overall and 9-2 in the Magic’s last 11 overall.

NBA: The Hornets are 3-13 ATS in their last 16 overall and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 road games.

      Key stat

20, 10, 2 – Averages that Orlando Magic big man Dwight Howard is eclipsing in points, rebounds, and blocks, respectively; the only NBA player to do so. Howard is going for 23.3 points, 13.9 points, and 2.2 blocks per game as of Thursday afternoon. Orlando is following up Thursday night’s showdown at Miami with another huge one on Friday at home against the Bulls. It also could be a crucial stretch in the MVP race for Howard (whose team just launched a website to campaign for him), LeBron James, and Derrick Rose.

      Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Atlanta’s Josh Smith has a strained right MCL and he missed Wednesday night’s home win over Chicago, in which the Hawks stormed back from a 17-point deficit to prevail 83-80. Smith is listed as questionable for Friday’s home date against Oklahoma City.

However, the news is even worse for the guy Smith likely would have guarded. Kevin Durant suffered a sprained ankle late in Wednesday’s 113-89 blowout of Indiana and he is listed as doubtful after missing practice on Thursday. James Harden will get the start if Durant cannot go against Atlanta.

“But you never know,” head coach Scott Brooks told NewsOK.com. “We'll see how he feels overnight and we'll go from there. He's a competitive guy like we all are. He doesn't like to miss games, but we're going to do what's best for Kevin.”

      Biggest game on the slate

Miami Heat at San Antonio Spurs

      Notable quotable

“We're anticipating sometime him getting better. That may be a month, we don't know. It could be this summer. He's been doing a lot better. We hope that means he will return to 100 percent health sometime this spring. I can't give you any kind of date on it.” – Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma on Sidney Crosby, who has been out since suffering a concussion on January 5. The Penguins have lost five of their last six and nine of their last 12 heading into a Friday night game at New Jersey.

      Tips and notes

Georgia State will be playing its first game without head coach Rod Barnes when it takes the court against UNC-Wilmington in the opening round of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament. "The win-loss record simply does not reflect where we want to be for Georgia State men’s basketball," athletic director Cheryl Levick said in a statement. "We felt it was in the best interest of the program to make this change now and begin moving forward immediately." Assistant coach Paul Graham, formerly a head at Washington State, has been named the interim. The Panthers and Seahawks split a pair of close regular-season contests, with the home team winning both. Saturday’s line is at even.

The Columbus Blue Jackets could be fighting fatigue when they take the ice against Calgary on Friday. They are in the midst of a five-game road trip and will have no day’s rest following a Thursday night trip to Edmonton. Columbus lost its first two games of the trek (3-2 to Nashville and 2-1 to Vancouver after a shootout), but that does not necessarily mean the team is playing bad hockey. “It would have been nice to finish that off with both points, but I thought we played a heck of a hockey game against a really good team and a tough goalie (Roberto Luongo),” head coach Scott Arniel said after his team’s loss to the Canucks.

Just when you thought it could not get any worse for the Miami Heat against good teams, Thursday happened. Playing at home against the Magic, Miami built a 24-point lead in the third quarter. Instead of putting the hammer down, the Heat let Orlando go on a shocking 40-9 run and eventually pull out a hard-to-believe 99-96 win. "We need to keep on pushing through," head coach Erik Spoelstra told the Miami Herald afterward. "There's no other way to say it. I think our guys are very anxious right now and they want it so bad. This will eventually help us. None of us want to talk about it right now, but we will eventually get over this hump." Both Miami and Orlando are back in action on Friday, and it does not get any easier for the Heat. They have to travel to San Antonio, which is 50-11 overall and 28-2 at home.

        Friday's six-pack

-- Orlando Magic were down 24 in Miami, but ralled to beat the Heat in a game that can't make life very pleasant for Heat coach Erik Spoelstra. Miami scored only 33 points in second half.

-- Washington outscored UCLA 21-10 down stretch and beat Bruins 70-63, knocking UCLA out of a tie for first in Pac-10.

-- Bradley beat Drake 63-48 in MVC tourney, making 9-17 from arc, only 4-11 on foul line. Welcome to modern basketball.

-- Seton Hall was shooting 28% from arc for season, but made 12-18 on Thursday and beat St John's 84-70, with score being padded late by few technicals on Red Storm, who lost their poise in last few minutes.

-- San Francisco Giants still owe Barry Zito $64.5M, and it sounds like they wouldn’t mind getting rid of him. Damn.

-- The first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise opened in 1952, but in Utah, not Kentucky; there had been KFC restaurants in Kentucky since the 30's. Just wanted to clarify. Thanks to Brad for the knowledge.

Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

        13) I’m thinking Charlie Sheen wouldn’t have lasted too long at BYU.

        12) My quick take on the kid getting tossed off the team at BYU—If you go to school there, you know the deal going in, its like going to a different world, so you have to live by their rules. Why anyone would go there, I haven’t a clue. But once you're there, they've got the hammer.

        11) My quick take on the NFL Labor thing: Owners know there is no public money left to build new stadiums, but they’re so arrogant, they want the players to kick in money to put up even more new stadiums. Colossal greed. For once, the players may not be in the wrong.

        10) The judge in the NFL case is an 82-year old ex-marine; strikes me as odd that someone in their 80’s would still be working on such a high profile case, but I don’t know much about how federal courts work. Just hope they figure how to split this vast fortune without a work stoppage.

        9) I’m against the designated hitter, but firmly believe it should be used in every spring training game and the All-Star Game; what better way to get hitters the extra AB’s they need? The DH is made for exhibition games.

        8) According to Statsheet.com, a referee named Doug Sirmons has handed out 49 technical fouls in 71 games this season, 16 more Ts than any other D-I ref in the country. He must be related to the evil Curtis Shaw, who is now retired but who once tossed Sammy the Owl from a Rice game.

        7) When you see the same ref-umpire/official always in disputes, you can safely assume he’s bad at his job. There is one college official who has stood out to me this season, his name is Mike Stuart—every time I see the guy, he’s giving a technical or making some call that outrages a coach. The best officials blend in as part of the game and are seldom noticed.

        6) UConn lost $1.8M playing in the Fiesta Bowl; they ate over 14,000 tickets that playing in the bowl required the school to buy.

        5) North Carolina’s star freshman Harrison Barnes is from Ames, IA; how bright would Iowa State’s future be if Barnes had decided to stay home and play for the Cyclones?

        4) Julio Jones, one of the two best WR’s in the NFL Draft, broke his foot at the Combine and had a screw put in it; he is one person who stands to benefit from a potential lockout, since he’ll have more time to rehab the injury before football activities start again, whenever that is.

        3) Very bizarre ending to Denver-Utah game, as Nuggets came thisclose to an enormous collapse in last 0:05, throwing away an inbounds pass with a 103-101 lead, but Kirilenko missed the simple tying layup at the buzzer.

Its the 7th straight home loss for Utah, while Nuggets are now 5-1 since trading Carmelo Anthony to the Knickerbockers.

        2) 9pm tipoff for Utah State-New Mexico State in Las Cruces was billed as “Pajama Night” Wednesday; some kids wore pajamas to the game, and they even had a big pillow fight on the court at halftime. Problem is, some nitwit brought a pie on the court during the pillow fight and hit someone with it, and the pie got all over the floor, making that end of court very slick for a while. Would’ve been ugly had someone gotten hurt.

        1) Every father in America now wants to send his daughter to college at BYU. Seriously. What other school says they don't allow sex?

                NBA

Cleveland Cavaliers at New York Knicks (-12, 217.5)

The Knicks are poised for some serious revenge to start the weekend.

The Cavaliers stunned the Knicks 115-109 last week in Ohio, taking away all the momentum New York had gained since upsetting the Heat in the prior game. Cleveland won the game by controlling the paint and playing physical. The Cavaliers made a whopping 31-of-44 free throws and held a 62-42 edge on rebounds.

But this time will be a little different.

The Cavaliers will be missing Antawn Jamison (finger), the team’s leading scorer who went off for 28 points and 13 boards with no turnovers in the victory. Cleveland also is expected to give some burn to the recently acquired Baron Davis for the first time in this game. For a player known to stop trying on bad teams, this isn’t necessarily a good thing.

The Knicks, meanwhile, are coming off a 107-88 beatdown of the Hornets and are playing more consistently. The team may miss lead guard Chauncey Billups (thigh), but Toney Douglas has been serviceable as his replacement in small doses, finishing with 24 points, five assists and four rebounds in the win over New Orleans.

"I talked to him this morning," Billups said of Douglas. "I told him, 'Try not to defer so much to the guys. When you call a plan, just run it no matter what people say or what you might feel. Be in command out there.’

"And I know it's probably tough for him as a young player playing with those studs like that, guys that are alpha males. So I know it's a difficult position for him, but I told him, 'Be confident in what you do.'"

                Pick: New York

                NCAAB

Pennsylvania Quakers at Harvard Crimson (-10.5)

There’s no denying Harvard is one of the top teams in the Ivy League this year. But the Crimson aren’t that great as a large favorite.

When listed as double-digit chalk this season, Harvard is a less-than-impressive 3-4 ATS, including late home rallies against Yale and Dartmouth just to pull out the wins. And the Quakers love being big underdogs.

Penn is a staggering 3-1 ATS this season when getting more than 10 points and actually trailed Kentucky by just a point at halftime in a game at Rupp Arena earlier this season. The Quakers may be just 4-9 SU on the road, but the squad is a very solid 7-5 ATS in lined games away from Philadelphia this season.

"We always talk about some days the ball is going in the basket, and some days it's not," said Penn coach Jerome Allen floor. "But if you're consistent in your defensive effort, you always give yourself a chance to win."

In the teams’ earlier meeting, Harvard left the Palestra with a one-point overtime win. But the officiating in that game was so poor that league officials were forced to comment on it the following day.

Plus, it’s not like the Crimson are in rare form. Harvard is coming off a disappointing 70-69 loss at Yale that saw the team favored by six points. Overall, the Crimson are just 2-4 ATS in their past six as favorites.

                Pick: Penn
