          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Atlanta Thrashers (-180, 5.5)

The Ottawa Senators are already looking to the future with this season lost long ago and many staples of the club now playing in other cities following the trade deadline. But the worst may be over for Senators bettors – if there are any out there.

Craig Anderson had his fair share of troubles while he was with the Avalanche earlier this year, though he seems to be benefiting from a change of scenery. Anderson is working on a .963 save percentage since joining the Senators and the club is playing a lot hungrier now that it is leaning on its youth.

Anderson faced just 21 shots in a 1-0 loss to Boston on Tuesday, the fewest shots the team has allowed in seven games. The Sens will need a similar effort against a Thrashers club that is averaging more than 40 shots over its last five games, but Atlanta is a total mess right now having won just twice over its last 12 games.

At this price it’s worth a shot on the Sens.

          Pick: Ottawa

Phoenix Coyotes at Los Angeles Kings (-165, 5.5)

The Coyotes’ eight-game winning streak is nothing but a distant memory. The club has dropped four straight contests and all of a sudden its defense has fallen apart.

Phoenix struggles offensively at the best of times, but look out when its defense starts falling apart. The Coyotes are allowing five goals per game over their current slide and look completely lost in their own end with defensive zone assignments.

They were a little better Tuesday night against the Stars – at least until the final minute. A late Phoenix penalty led to a Jamie Benn goal with about four ticks left in regulation to send Coyotes bettors home empty handed again.

"We've got to look at it right in the teeth and say what's going on," Phoenix coach Dave Tippett told reporters following the loss. "That's two games this week we've lost because of penalties. At some point, we've got to get it and we'll look it straight in the face and take the challenge. We better or it's not a good thing."

Meanwhile, the Kings were just pumped 7-4 by the Red Wings, so they’ll be looking to tighten up defensively too.

          Pick: Under

Denver Nuggets at Utah Jazz [TNT | 10:35 PM ET]

NUGGETS: Denver might have made their blockbuster trade much earlier had they known how well their team was going to respond. Utah has had a tumultuous season, as they are still getting over the loss of PG Deron Williams and Coach Jerry Sloan. The Jazz are 32-29 SU and 26-34-1 ATS overall this year. Utah is 17-14 SU and 12-19 ATS at home this season. The Jazz are just 1-4 ATS as a home favorite between 3.5 and 6 PTS this year.
