    Daily Sports Roundup: March 3

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The PGA Tour hits the links in The Honda Classic, while St. John's matches up with Seton Hall, and the Magic play on the road in Miami.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA's Thursday night slate features a pair of games: Denver at Utah, and Orlando at Miami. The Heat will be looking to bounce back from a 91-86 loss at home to the Knicks in their last game, which put them at 43-17 SU and 28-31-1 ATS on the season. LeBron James poured in 27 points for Miami that day, while Dwyane Wade was held to just 12 points. The Heat are 2-1 against the rival Magic on the season, winning their most recent matchup 104-100 as a 1-point road underdog in an OVER result on February 3. James exploded for 51 points for Miami that night, while Wade was good for 14 points. Dwight Howard picked up 17 points and 16 rebounds for Orlando in that loss.

As well, there are three games involving ranked teams on the college basketball schedule for Thursday, with Oregon State at No. 18 Arizona, No. 10 Wisconsin at Indiana, and No. 15 St. John's at Seton Hall. The Red Storm (19-9 SU, 14-13 ATS) have won six straight games, beating Villanova 81-68 last time out; Dwight Hardy tossed in 34 points for St. John's. The Pirates (11-17 SU, 12-13 ATS) were beaten 60-48 by Notre Dame in their last game, with Jeff Robinson scoring 16 points for Seton Hall.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The NHL offers up 11 games on Thursday, with Tampa Bay at Boston, St. Louis at Washington, Minnesota at the Rangers, Buffalo at Carolina, Ottawa at Atlanta, Montreal at Florida, Columbus at Edmonton, Nashville at Vancouver, Phoenix at Los Angeles, Detroit at San Jose, and Toronto at Philadelphia. The Flyers fell to 40-16-6 on the season with a 4-1 loss in Ottawa in their last game on Saturday. Scott Hartnell had the lone Philly marker in that contest, while Brian Boucher stopped 25 of 29 Ottawa shots. The Flyers are 2-0 against the Maple Leafs so far this season, most recently winning 4-1 on the road in an UNDER result on December 9. Boucher got the win in that matchup.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the golfers of the PGA Tour hit the links in The Honda Classic at the PGA National Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida starting on Thursday. Lee Westwood is the oddsmakers' 12/1 favorite to take home the trophy in Palm Beach Gardens this week, with Luke Donald and Graeme McDowell right behind him on that odds list at 14/1. Matt Kuchar and Rory McIlroy are both sitting at 16/1 odds to win The Honda Classic, while defending champion Camilo Villegas is a longshot to win at 50/1.

Bettors' best friend: Thursday's wagering tips

      Injury of interest

Danilo Gallinari, Denver Nuggets: Gallinari is expected to be out of action for at least a week after fracturing his big left toe. The 6-foot-10 sharpshooter put up 30 points against Portland on Friday before going on the shelf. He was putting up 15.9 points per game while he was with the Knicks.

      Key trends

NBA: Orlando has played under in nine of its last 11 games overall.

NBA: Denver has covered in five straight games and has played over in nine of its last 11 road games heading into Thursday’s date at Utah.

NHL: Atlanta has won just two of its last 12 games and is 7-22 over its last 29 contests.

NHL: San Jose has won seven straight games but squares off against a Detroit club that has won seven of its last nine on Thursday.

NHL: After reeling off eight consecutive victories earlier this month, the Phoenix Coyotes have dropped each of their last four games.

NCAAB: Indiana has lost six straight games outright, covering just once over that span. The Hoosiers host Wisconsin on Thursday.

NCAAB: Seton Hall has played under in 20 of its last 27 games overall including 11 of its last 12 home games.

NCAAB: Oregon State has covered the number in just four of its last 14 contests.

      Number of note

11 – While the Miami Heat have earned their supporters some cash back after their terrible start to the season against the spread, they’re still inconsistent against the spread home. Miami has covered only 11 times in 28 games in front of their hometown fans this season. The Heat host the Orlando Magic on Thursday.

      Notes and tips

Washington’s outside shooting let the club down in Sunday’s 80-69 upset loss to Washington State and the Huskies are keeping that in mind heading into Thursday’s big game with UCLA. UW missed 12 of its first 13 trey attempts and coach Lorenzo Romar wants his club to be more careful with shot selection from outside against UCLA’s tough defense. "That's another area we have to get better in, in two days before we play UCLA -- being more patient in turning some (3's) down," Romar said. "If you eliminate the contested ones, you want shoot as many but your percentage will go up - the ol' less-is more theory."

Buffalo Sabres leading scorer Thomas Vanek sat out Wednesday’s practice after taking a shot to the ankle in a win over the New York Rangers. Vanek, who has 52 points on the year, is expected to tape it up and tough it out in a huge matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday. The Sabres trail the Hurricanes by two points for the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets don’t have much left to play for as they finish out the string in a miserable season - maybe apart from coach Paul Hewitt’s job. The team is just 11-17 straight up as they face they visit a terrible Wake Forest club as a 5-point favorite and word is Hewitt may be let go after the season. "I think as we get to the close of the season (Athletic Director Dan Radakovich) will remain true to his philosophy and will sit down with coach Hewitt and discuss where we go from here,” Associate Athletic Director Wayne Hogan told reporters. “That won't occur before the end of the season.”

        Thursday's six-pack

-- Senior Night for Jimmer Fredette turned into a debacle at BYU, with New Mexico coming into Provo and squashing the Cougars, 82-64. It is very tough to kick a kid off the team at this time of year and not have it be a crippling blow to a team's chemistry.

-- Pac-10 fired 11 football officials Wednesday; they picked interesting time to try and bury story, with lot of other stuff going on in news.

-- Ole Miss led by 20 at Auburn but lost, a hideous loss for the Rebs.

-- Harrison Barnes drained a dramatic 3-pointer from top of key to give North Carolina a tough 72-70 win at gutty Florida State team that was playing without Chris Singleton, its best player.

-- Colorado Buffaloes have most wins vs top 50 teams of any team that isn't in the top 50, and that will help them on Selection Sunday.

-- The first Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant opened in 1952, but in Utah, not Kentucky. Just thought you'd like to know.

Thursday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind..........

        13) So Eddie Sutton gets in the College Basketball Hall of Fame but Jerry Tarkanian doesn’t? You lose credibility making decisions like that.

I want to hear the logic behind that decision, and don’t tell me “NCAA problems” because Sutton’s inclusion knocks out that argument.

        12) Joe Torre landed into a cushy $2M a year job with MLB, as some kind of executive something-or-other. It must be nice.

        11) Supposedly, the new spring training facility out in Arizona, being shared by Rockies/Diamondbacks, is tremendous. Good to catch some Cactus League games on TV after work this month.

        10) Barry Rohrssen had a chance to go to St John’s as a recruiter last spring, but remained loyal to Manhattan and stayed on as head coach. Well, his team had a horrible season, so Manhattan repaid Rohrssen for his loyalty by firing him as soon as the Jaspers get bounced from the MAAC tournament, which should be soon. He won’t have trouble finding work as a recruiter.

        9) Texas is using Michael Young at first base? Sounds like a good idea, although as an A’s fan, I wish they’d trade him. To the National League.

        8) Hard to believe that UConn Huskies are 0-5 in the Big East tournament the last five years; that streak will get tested again next week in NYC.

        7) For whatever reason, teams are 2-9 the night after playing the Los Angeles Kings. NHL players have toughest schedules of any sport- very physically demanding game played 3-4 times a week.

        6) Nuggets’ Timofey Moscow got married at a drive-thru chapel in Las Vegas during the All-Star break, wearing sweats. Now if he could only get George Karl to put him in a game. If not, the Knicks could still use him.

        5) There have been five NBA games this year where a player had 30+ points/ 20+ rebounds; in four of five games, that player was Kevin Love.

        4) If you add up all the numbers on a roulette wheel, the total is 666.

        3) Hard to believe, but Memphis is the only team in Conference USA that averages less than 1.00 points/possession in conference play; Tigers are very young, but you’d never think they’d have worst offense in league.

        2) How does a professional basketball player shoot 45% from the foul line? What does he do all summer?

Why doesn’t he try shooting underhanded (Rick Barry, one of the all-time greats, shot foul shots underhanded)? To me, there’s no excuse for being so poor at something that practice can help correct.

        1) When do people who were born on February 29 celebrate birthdays?

Orlando Magic at Miami Heat (-5, 198)

Orlando will be looking to even up the season series with Miami when the two Eastern Conference giants meet for the fourth and final time Thursday night.

Appropriately, they have traded blows up to this point. For one of their few early-season highlights, the Heat humiliated the Magic 96-70 as 4-point home favorites on October 29. Less than a month later, on November 24, Orlando got the best of Miami 104-95, also as a 4-point favorite.

The ball bounced back in the Heat’s favor on February 3, when they went on the road as 1-point underdogs and picked up an impressive 104-100 win. Miami nearly blew a massive fourth-quarter lead, but LeBron James’ 51 points (not to mention 11 rebounds and eight assists) proved to be enough.

                  Full Nelson

The Heat have done well to contain (relatively speaking) Dwight Howard, whose 20 ppg in three games is well under his 23.2 season average. Howard is averaging 13.7 rebounds against Miami (just about at his season average) and only 0.7 blocks (a far cry from his 2.2. average).

Jameer Nelson, though, often does some of his best work at the Heat’s expense. Nelson averaged 16.3 points, seven assists and four rebounds in the previous three tilts.

He has posted double figures in five straight outings and is coming off one of his best games of the season. On Tuesday, Nelson scored a season-high 26 points, including 23 in the second half and 14 in the fourth quarter, to give Orlando (39-22, 28-32-1 ATS) a big 116-110 home win over New York.

“Jameer takes us to another level,” teammate J.J. Redick told the Orlando Sentinel afterward.

                  Heating problem

The Heat (43-17, 29-30-1 ATS) need to take it to another level if they want to have any shot at doing damage in the playoffs. They own a respectable record, especially compared to earlier in the season, but continue to be woeful against good teams.

Just take the last 11 games, for example. In that span, Miami beat the Bobcats, Clippers, Pacers (twice), Pistons, Raptors and Wizards. The team lost to the Celtics, Bulls, and most recently 91-86 at home to the Knicks Sunday.

Sense a pattern? And the bad news for the Heat is that their next 10 games come against teams that are at least six games over .500.

                  Trending topics

The Heat are 1-4 ATS in their last five overall and 0-4 ATS in their last four against the Eastern Conference.

The under is 9-2 in the Magic’s last 11 overall and 5-1 in their last six against the Eastern Conference.

Head-to-head, the favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last four meetings. The over is 7-3 in the last 10 encounters.

Denver Nuggets at Utah Jazz (-3.5, 210)

It will be a much different game from their previous two meetings this season when the Nuggets visit the Jazz Thursday night. Gone, of course, are respective stars Carmelo Anthony (now with New York) and Deron Williams (now with New Jersey).

The head-to-head series is split 1-1 following a pair of tilts in Denver. The Nuggets and Jazz opened the 2010-11 campaign against each other on October 27, with Denver dominating 110-88 and obliterating the 3.5-point spread. Utah, though, got revenge in the form of a 113-106 win on February 4. The visitors laughed at being 9-point underdogs, covering by a healthy 16 points.

The Nuggets (35-26, 28-30-3 ATS) will be coming off a Wednesday night home game against Charlotte when they head to Utah. Denver is a mediocre 7-8 (6-9 ATS) in the second of back-to-back contests so far this season.

                  Jazz feeling the blues

First the Jazz (32-29, 26-34-1 ATS) lost the longest-tenured coach in the NBA when Jerry Sloan resigned last month. Then star point guard Deron Williams was shipped off to New Jersey just before the trade deadline.

Not coincidentally, Utah has lost seven of its last eight (2-6 ATS) and two straight (0-2 ATS). Prior to a 107-102 home loss to Boston Monday, the Jazz fell at lowly Detroit 120-116 Saturday night.

Frustration is starting to boil over, especially for 34-year-old guard Raja Bell. He is not happy with the losses, nor is he content with his own contributions. Bell put up a goose-egg in last Friday’s win over Indiana and scored just two points against the Celtics.

“Any time we lose, frustration comes along with that, especially at this point in the season,” Bell told the Salt Lake Tribune. “…I said when I came here I would do whatever people asked me to so. And that hasn’t changed. I don’t have to like it every night. But I will do whatever is asked of me to the best of my ability.”

The Nuggets, on the other hand, have won four of five (5-0 ATS) and are 3-1 since the Carmelo trade. Newly-acquired Danilo Gallinari, though, will miss the next week due to a toe injury.

                  Trending topics

The Nuggets are 5-0 ATS in their last five overall.

The Jazz are 0-6 ATS in their last six home games.

The over is 9-2 in Denver’s last 11 road games and 5-1 in its last six playing without a days rest. The over is also 11-1 in Utah’s last 12 playing on two days rest.

Head-to-head, the favorite is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings and the over is 8-2 in the last 10 encounters. The Jazz are 3-0-1 ATS in their last four at home against the Nuggets.

Denver Nuggets at Utah Jazz (-3.5, 210)

Both the Nuggets and Jazz have undergone major changes over the last couple of weeks, though that's about the only thing the two clubs have in common.

The Jazz have won just once over their first seven games under Tyrone Corbin since Jerry Sloan rode off into the sunset, covering just twice over that span. Plus, the club is now trying to adjust after superstar point guard Deron Williams was shipped to New Jersey, leaving the reins to Devin Harris.

"Despite the fact we're losing games, we're playing way better basketball right now,” forward Andrei Kirilenko told reporters. “We basically started from scratch. We lost coach [Jerry Sloan] first, we lost Deron. Right now, we start building again. So we're playing better, but we're not happy with the result."

Of course, Denver knows all about that following its facelift. The difference is George Karl is getting the most out of versatile lineup. The Nuggets head into this one playing the second of a back-to-back, but the more this club team plays right now, the quicker it will come together.

St. John’s Red Storm at Seton Hall Pirates (2, 129)

St. John’s has made a habit of putting Top 25 teams to shame all year and now has an opportunity to earn a double-bye in next weekend’s Big East Tournament with two wins to close out the regular season.

And considering the Red Storm’s track record so far this year, you have to like their chances against the Pirates and then home to South Florida on Saturday. That said, they aren’t taking these last two tests lightly.

"These games are actually harder," St. John's senior forward Justin Burrell said. "You see when a team that, for the lack of a better word, is supposed to win the game, those games are sometimes close, because teams overlook them, or don't come out with the same intensity. So we're paying attention, focusing in on Seton Hall and making sure we go out and get a victory."

The Red Storm will be up against history on Thursday – they haven’t won at Seton Hall in 13 years. Still, St. John’s is a class above the Pirates and has too much motivation to slip up now.

                    Pick: St. John’s

                              UCLA at Washington (-8.5, 150)

                              THE STORY
: Teams headed in different directions tip off in the final week of the regular season in Pac-10 Conference play when UCLA visits Washington on Thursday. The Bruins hammered Arizona on Saturday to move into a tie with the Wildcats for first place with just two games left to play. The Huskies, the overwhelming preseason conference favorites, were upset by rival Washington State on Sunday, dropping them two games behind the co-leaders and virtually ending their conference title hopes. While UCLA has won 12 of its last 14 games, Washington has fallen on hard times, dropping five of its last nine.

                              TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN2

ABOUT WASHINGTON (19-9, 10-6 Pac-10, 14-11-1 ATS): The Huskies are suddenly on the NCAA bubble after a late-season swoon. Nationally-ranked for much of the season, Washington was never really in Sunday’s game as the Cougars capped a season-sweep of their in-state rivals 80-69. The high-scoring Huskies were limited to 17 points in the first half and shot just 34 percent for the game. Washington still holds a respectable RPI ranking of 43 but it has steadily dropped as the season has progressed. Another loss or two could mean it will have to win the conference tournament to earn an NCAA berth. The Huskies are 13-1 at home.

ABOUT UCLA (21-8, 12-4, 14-14-1 ATS): The Bruins have to avoid a letdown after an emotional win over Arizona. UCLA not only won the game in surprisingly easy fashion, 71-49, but the Bruins closed out the old Pauley Pavilion with storybook-like ending. Tyler Trapani, the great grandson of legendary UCLA coach John Wooden and a junior walk-on for the Bruins, scored the final basket at the arena before it closes its doors for at least a year for major renovations. UCLA coach Ben Howland openly wept at the dramatics and was overjoyed how his once lightly-regarded Bruins seized the moment and got 27 points and 16 rebounds from Reeves Nelson on the way to avenging a humbling loss at Arizona a couple of weeks earlier.

WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Nelson notched his 12th double-double last game and has two straight. Washington guard C.J. Wilcox is just 2-of-14 shooting after moving into the starting lineup two games ago.

RECENT HISTORY: Washington coasted past UCLA 74-63 at Pauley Pavilion. That game seems more like ages ago rather than the two months that have actually passed.

KEY STATISTIC: Prior to losing 80-69 to Washington State on Feb. 27, the Huskies’ season low for a home game this season was 80 points. Washington had topped 100 points five times in its previous 13 home games.

LOOKING AHEAD: The Bruins wrap up the regular season at Washington State on Saturday. Washington entertains a resurgent USC team in another crucial contest.

LAST WORD: While UCLA must win both games on the road to assure itself of at least a tie for the Pac-10 regular-season title, things are much easier for Arizona, which hosts Oregon and Oregon State. Arizona is 15-0 at home this season.

TRENDS: UCLA has covered in six of its last eight games and have also played under the total in six of those contests.

Washington has is 7-1 against the spread in its last eight meetings with the Bruins.

Washington has covered in nine of its last 13 home games and have played over the total in 10 of its last 14 home tilts.
