Bettors' best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

    Injury of interest

Baron Davis, Cleveland Cavaliers: Davis’ wonky knee will reportedly keep him out of Wednesday’s home date with the San Antonio Spurs and coach Byron Scott is now hoping Davis will be able to make his debut with the Cavs by this weekend. Scott insists that Davis will likely be his starter at the point once he’s ready to go. The 31-year-old was putting up 12.8 points and seven assists per game with the Los Angeles Clippers before last week’s trade.

    Key trends

NBA: The San Antonio Spurs have dropped four straight games against the spread after covering in six of seven prior to that.

NBA: Chicago has covered in seven of its last eight games, but has dropped six of its last seven meetings with the Atlanta Hawks heading into Wednesday’s contest.

NBA: Denver has won four of its last five, covering in all five of those games.

NHL: The New Jersey Devils continue their improbable push for a playoff spot Wednesday against Tampa Bay. New Jersey is 17-2-2 over its 21 games.

NHL: Detroit has won seven of its last nine games and has also won its last three meetings with the Anaheim Ducks.

NCAAB: UConn has covered in only three of its last nine games, but the Huskies are 7-2 ATS in their last nine meetings with West Virginia.

NCAAB: North Carolina has won 10 of its last 11 games, covering nine times over that span.

    Number of note

16 – The UAB Blazers have played under the total 16 times this season, which is tied for the most in the nation heading into Wednesday’s game against Southern Mississippi. The under has cashed in on five of UAB’s last six games and the club allows just over 62 points per game on the year.

    Notes and tips

Pistons bench boss John Kuester is wiping the slate clean following a falling out with his club over the weekend that resulted in a number of the team's regulars riding the pine. After a rotten first half of the season, he says all positions on the club are now up for grabs, which may actually provide a bit of healthy competition within the Pistons. Detroit had won just twice in the last 10 games heading into Tuesday’s date with the Bucks but continue to cash in for supporters sitting at 33-28 ATS.

The Portland Trail Blazers continue to handle Brandon Roy’s delicate knee situation very carefully. He is expected to be in the lineup Tuesday night, but will then sit out the second half of Portland’s back-to-back Wednesday at Sacramento. Even when Roy’s able to suit up, he’s playing on a strict minute count at this point, while the Trail Blazers had dropped three straight against the number heading into Tuesday’s date at home to Houston.

Anaheim Ducks forward Corey Perry left Tuesday’s practice with what’s being described as a lower-body injury. “It’s too early to even talk about Corey,” said coach Randy Carlyle. If Perry misses any time it would be a huge loss for the Ducks. He leads the team in scoring with 31 goals and 68 points on the year and Anaheim is set as a +120 home underdog on Tuesday against the surging Detroit Red Wings.

Pucking the trends: This week's hot and cold NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

          HOT TEAM: Columbus Blue Jackets

Columbus enters Sunday’s tilt vs. Nashville riding a three-game winning streak. The Blue Jackets have won five of six, they have points in all six on that stretch, and are guaranteed at least eight victories this month.

Three of their five wins came at home and as favorites but the club still pulled out a surprising 4-3 win at Chicago against the defending champs.

As play began on Sunday, they were still on the outside looking in, with regards to the playoffs, but they were only three points out of the eighth spot and they had at least one game in hand on the whole conference.

At the forefront of the surge, is All-Star Rick Nash, who’s played like the star the Blue Jackets need on the ice and at the box office. He has five goals in his last six games, helping Columbus score four or more goals in each of its last three contests.

          COLD TEAM: Anaheim Ducks

If there’s a hot team in the bottom of the West playoff race, it probably means there’s a cold one, too, and that is true for Anaheim these days.

The Ducks entered Sunday’s game vs. Colorado on a five-game losing streak, and it’s been uglier than it even sounds. Anaheim has allowed 27 goals during that stretch including seven to Washington on Feb. 16, and nine to St. Louis on Feb. 19.

It’s safe to say this team is missing its starting goalie. Jonas Hiller is still out because of vertigo symptoms but Anaheim just recently acquired Dan Ellis from Tampa Bay. Bettors might have to take a wait-and-see approach with Anaheim once Ellis gets between the pipes.

          OVER PLAY: Ottawa Senators

OK, so this might be a tough sell after the Senators handcuffed the Flyers, 4-1, on Saturday night, but don’t be fooled by 2.5 hours of hockey. We all know strange things happen on Hockey Night in Canada anyway.

What can’t be undersold is that new-look Ottawa -- with youngsters up from the AHL and a new goalie still finding his way -- seems bound to be an over play for the rest of the season.

Saturday’s win went under by a half but let’s take a look at the numbers. The under snapped a two-game over streak, yes, but Ottawa has still pushed past the total in nine of its last 11 games.

Craig Anderson has been good in net since the trade from Colorado, but remember his defense will be young and shaky the rest of the way.

And let’s see how that defense responds to a tough trifecta this week, to open the month of March: Boston, Atlanta and the Rangers. Think over, folks.

          UNDER PLAY: New Jersey Devils

Well, their winning ways finally came to an end, with a 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Friday, but the unders just keep on coming for New Jersey.

Johan Hedberg has been tremendous in net and the offense is still slow enough for the Devils to be a consistent under buy the rest of the way. They entered Sunday’s game vs. Florida having gone under in four straight, and were in the midst of a 7-0-2 under run. That’s a quality, consistent stretch for any under player.

In fact, prior to the game vs. the Panthers, the Devils had gone over in a game just once all month.

          SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE

** Just what the East-leading Flyers needed, right? Rest. Philadelphia, fresh off four games last week, won’t return to the ice until Thursday night. So, expect some rejuvenated legs, when they play host to the Maple Leafs at the Wells Fargo Center on four days’ rest.

** The Canucks won’t be so lucky. On Tuesday, Vancouver plays host to the Blue Jackets in a game which will start a run of four contests in six days. For a team that is just 4-5 in its last nine, Vancouver might want to get it together in this stretch, in which it’ll also play the Predators, Kings and Ducks.

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at Toronto Maple Leafs (-140, 5.5)

A lot has gone wrong for the Pittsburgh Penguins since they lost to the Washington Capitals in the Winter Classic on New Year's Day. Sidney Crosby suffered a concussion during that game and not long after that Evgeni Malkin went down for the year with a knee injury.

Despite those two major blows to the lineup, the Penguins are getting by with great coaching, impressive goaltending and overall depth. Following the trade deadline, they’re a significantly better team this week than they were last week.

Alex Kovalev scored the shootout winner in Toronto Saturday and the Pens should only improve as James Neal and Matt Niskanen get more comfortable after coming over from Dallas. That’s bad news for the Leafs.

"They play a net-crash game," said Toronto coach Ron Wilson after Saturday’s 6-5 loss. "We just weren't quite able to cope with that for whatever reason. (We were) sloppy, they had too much time."

The Maple Leafs have been hot and are expected to have rookie James Reimer back in goal on Wednesday, but it’s hard to pass up the plucky Pens at this price.

            Pick: Pittsburgh

Tampa Bay Lightning at New Jersey Devils (-135, 5)

If you’re looking for a playoff atmosphere, look no further than this matchup.

The Lightning and Devils battled it out in a tight-checking 2-1 Tampa Bay victory last week and it should be just as tight this time around. The Devils are on a ridiculous 17-2-2 run and have a refocused emphasis on defense from coach Jacques Lemaire to thank for that, but against a potent offense like Tampa Bay’s, even a small lapse in concentration can be costly.

The Lightning struck twice in the second period of their last matchup, burying two goals in less than a minute and can play some defense too, having won three straight games while giving up just five goals over that span.

"At the beginning of the year we were great at closing out close games," Lightning coach Guy Boucher told his team's official website following another 2-1 victory over the Rangers on Sunday. "That's what games in the playoffs are going to be like, and that's what we want."

The books see it that way too with the total at 5 for Wednesday’s matchup but this should be a very similar game to the one we saw last week between the two clubs.

            Pick: Under

                Daily Sports Roundup: March 2

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Suns hit the east coast for a game against the Celtics, while Texas A&M takes on Kansas, and the Red Wings take the ice in Anaheim.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA schedule features 10 games on Wednesday, with Chicago at Atlanta, Golden State at Washington, San Antonio at Cleveland, Minnesota at Detroit, New Orleans at New York, Indiana at Oklahoma City, Charlotte at Denver, Portland at Sacramento, Houston at the Clippers, and Phoenix at Boston. The Suns (31-27 SU, 27-30-1 ATS) ride a four-game winning streak into Wednesday's game, beating the Nets 104-103 in New Jersey last time out. The Celtics (43-15 SU, 28-28-2 ATS) got past the Jazz 107-102 in Utah in their most recent outing. The Suns and Celtics have already met once this season, with Phoenix winning 88-71 as a 4.5-point home underdog in an UNDER result on January 28. Steve Nash picked up 13 points and 10 assists in that night's win.

There are then nine games involving ranked teams on the college hoops schedule for Wednesday, with No. 16 Connecticut at West Virginia, Charlotte at No. 23 Xavier, No. 13 North Carolina at Florida State, Providence at No. 11 Louisville, Clemson at No. 4 Duke, No. 4 Pittsburgh at South Florida, New Mexico at No. 3 BYU, No. 25 Utah State at New Mexico State, and No. 24 Texas A&M at No. 2 Kansas. The second-ranked Jayhawks (27-2 SU, 14-12 ATS) knocked off Oklahoma 82-70 on the road last time out behind 23 points from Marcus Morris. The Aggies (22-6 SU, 9-9-1 ATS) will be looking to bounce back from a 58-51 loss at Baylor; David Loubeau tossed in 14 points for Texas A&M in that defeat. Kansas beat Texas A&M by a score of 79-66 when those two teams last met on the hardwood last March in the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament.

                Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, the NHL offers up five games on Wednesday, with Tampa Bay at New Jersey, Minnesota at the Islanders, Pittsburgh at Toronto, Calgary at Chicago, and Detroit at Anaheim. The 39-18-6 Red Wings blasted the Kings 7-4 in Los Angeles in their last game on Monday night, with Drew Miller scoring a pair of goals and Jimmy Howard stopping 35 of 39 Los Angeles shots. The 33-25-5 Ducks edged Colorado 3-2 at home in their most recent game, with Ryan Getzlaf, Brandon McMillan, and Todd Marchant providing the markers. Detroit has won all three meetings with Anaheim so far this year.

                  Wednesday's six-pack

-- March Madness got underway with tournaments in Horizon and Big South; all four higher seeds advanced in the Horizon tournament, but in the Big South, 7-seed High Point upset the 2-seed Liberty.

-- Huge blow to BYU, whose leading rebounder is done for year after an Honor Code violation. BYU wasn't deep to begin with.

-- From the "Can't Stand Prosperity" files: Three nights after upsetting Duke at home, Virginia Tech got whacked at home by Boston College. Seth Greenberg's team's erratic play is typical of this whole season.

-- Rough spring for the Cardinals already, with Wainwright blowing his elbow out and now Carpenter tweaking his hamstring.

-- I understand why the Nuggets traded Carmelo Anthony, but why did they trade Chauncey Billups? He's very good, and he's from Denver.

-- Burlington, VT received 43.1" of snow in February, making it their snowiest February on record. Just thought you'd like to know.

                  ***************************

Wednesday's List of 13: College knowledge as March begins

                  13) Mountain West—Great year for league that loses BYU/Utah next year. BYU/San Diego State are both top 10 teams; UNLV has been crippled by poor shooting. New Mexico faded down stretch. Colorado State has its best team in years.

                  12) Pac-10—Ben Howland has done stellar job guiding Bruins back to top of league; next eight teams are amazingly erratic, while Arizona State is having down year. Dana Altman got more out of his Oregon team than most thought possible.

                  11) Ivy—Harvard gagged at arch-rival Yale, putting Princeton back in driver’s seat for league title. At one point, Penn lost three straight games, all in OT. You don’t see that a lot.

                  10) Big East—St John’s has ridden nine seniors/coaching change to return to prominence; along with Pitt/Notre Dame, they’re head/shoulders above rest of league. They’ll probably get 11 in NCAAs, but other eight all have serious flaws.

                  9) MAAC—Is this the year for Fairfield to go dancing? They’ll be challenged in tourney by veteran Iona squad. As bad as Manhattan was this year, why didn’t Barry Rohrssen take Steve Lavin’s offer and go to St John’s as a recruiter?

                  8) Sun Belt—UL-Lafayette was 3-14, enters postseason 14-14, superior coaching job by Bob Marlin. Denver didn’t win a conference road game. North Texas hammered LSU but was disappointment in league play.

                  7) MAC—Don’t have team ranked in top 100. Ball State was hot early, then faded. Ohio was in funk early, is coming on now.

                  6) ACC—Worst year in memory for this league. Virginia is shooting 39% from arc in league games but only 41% inside it. Miami has ton of close losses. Clemson changed styles but still struggles on road. North Carolina has improved behind freshman PG Marshall. Duke is miles ahead of this group.

                  5) WCC—This was the year St Mary’s was going to break Gonzaga’s stranglehold on WCC title, especially after Gonzaga lost three league games in row, but shocking loss at San Diego sent Gaels reeling, and Zags caught them at wire. WCC tourney in Vegas should be very interesting.

                  4) Horizon—Milwaukee came out of nowhere to claim top seed; stat gurus have them no better than #4 team in league. Valparaiso faded after Dickie V left town. Cleveland State has great player in Norris Cole, but they lost double bye in tourney, which could prove costly.

                  3) SEC—Mississippi State’s players fought amongst themselves in public out in Hawai’i, but they’re still one of better teams in a hideous Western Division.

Kentucky has lot ton of close games on road. Vanderbilt looks tough, but they always look better in February than in March. Mark Fox has Georgia headed in right direction.

                  2) MVC—Missouri State/Wichita are by far two best teams; Bears swept Wichita, but third meeting in St Louis could still decide who goes dancing. Not sure this league will get two teams. Shockers’ loss to UConn out in Maui could prove costly.

                  1) Big 11—Michigan State/Illinois/Minnesota/Northwestern have all been disappointing. Michigan is surging late; Ohio State has been best team, despite losing last two road games.

                      NBA

Charlotte Bobcats at Denver Nuggets (-7.5, 201)

Denver has won three of its first four games following the Carmelo Anthony deal while leading its supporters to the pay window in all four of those contests – pretty impressive considering the extent of the Nuggets’ facelift.

"A lot of lineups can work," said newcomer Raymond Felton, who spent five years with Charlotte before joining the Knicks last offseason. "We've got a deep team. It will take (coach George Karl) a while, but I know coach is a great coach. ... He'll figure it out."

That seems to be the least of the team’s worries. Karl has put four different starting lineups on the floor since the trade and the club is stepping up as he tries to figure out where everyone fits into the big scheme of things. Five Nuggets scored in double figures in Monday’s 100-90 victory over Atlanta as a 6.5-point favorite.

Meanwhile, Charlotte is also dealing with a retooled lineup after trading away Gerald Wallace and Nazr Mohammed. Right now at least, it looks like the Nuggets are coming together quicker.

                      Pick: Denver

                      NCAA

Connecticut Huskies at West Virginia Mountaineers (-4.5, 131)

There’s a major logjam in the Big East and this week’s action will go a long way in determining the seeds for the conference tournament. Four teams are currently tied for seventh place and each is hoping to avoid playing on the first day of the tourney at MSG.

West Virginia knows it will have to try to contain Kemba Walker as much as possible on Wednesday, which is a lot easier said than done. Walker sits second in the conference averaging 22.8 points per game and can expect to see a lot of West Virginia’s 1-3-1 zone defense.

“Just force him into tough shots,” WVU point guard Joe Mazzulla told reporters about how the Huskies plan to defend Walker. “He’s a great player and will create his own shot and whatever we did with [Ben] HanXXXough – we want to kind of wear him down and make every shot he takes a tough one and don’t give him anything easy.”

Nothing’s going to come easy in this one. Take the points here and expect it to go down to the wire.

                      Pick: UConn
