    Daily Sports Roundup: March 1

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Stars hit the ice in Phoenix against the Coyotes, while Vanderbilt takes on Kentucky, and the Knicks look for a win in Orlando.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up eight games on Tuesday night, with Golden State at Indiana, Dallas at Philadelphia, New Orleans at Toronto, Detroit at Milwaukee, the Lakers at Minnesota, San Antonio at Memphis, Houston at Portland, and New York at Orlando. The Magic last faced the Knicks back in their pre-Carmelo days on December 30, winning 112-103 as a 7.5-point home favorite in that OVER result. Dwight Howard led the way on offense for Orlando in that game with 24 points and 18 rebounds, while Hedo Turkoglu picked up 17 points and nine boards. Amare Stoudemire was good for 30 points for New York.

As well, games involving ranked teams on the college basketball schedule for Tuesday include Alabama at No. 14 Florida, Illinois at No. 6 Purdue, No. 22 Missouri at Nebraska, No. 1 Ohio State at Penn State, No. 9 San Diego State at Wyoming, and No. 21 Vanderbilt at No. 20 Kentucky. The Commodores (21-7 SU, 14-7-1 ATS) thumped LSU 90-69 last time out; Vanderbilt got a 20-point performance from Jeffery Taylor that day. The Wildcats (20-8 SU, 10-12-1 ATS) are coming off a 76-68 win over Florida, with Darius Miller scoring 24 points for Kentucky in that victory. Kentucky and Vanderbilt already met once this year back on February 12, with the Commodores winning 81-77.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are 10 games on the NHL's Tuesday schedule, with Montreal at Atlanta, Florida at Carolina, Buffalo at the Rangers, the Islanders at Washington, Boston at Ottawa, Calgary at St. Louis, Nashville at Edmonton, Columbus at Vancouver, Colorado at San Jose, and Dallas at Phoenix. The Stars improved to 33-23-6 on the season by getting past the Predators 3-2 in Dallas in their last game on Saturday afternoon. Tom Wandell, Alex Goligoski, and Loui Eriksson had the goals for the Stars in that contest, while Kari Lehtonen made 25 saves and was named the game's First Star. Dallas rides a two-game win streak into Tuesday's matchup, but they're 1-3 versus Phoenix this year.

Bettors' best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

      Injury of interest

Tony Parker, San Antonio Spurs: Parker is reportedly going to be out of action for two to four weeks with a strained calf after suffering the injury Sunday against Memphis. Parker is putting up 17.1 points and 6.6 assists per game for the Spurs, who have dropped four straight against the number.

      Key trends

NBA: Golden State has played under the total in nine of its last 12 games and is 4-13 ATS in its last 17 meetings with Indiana. The Warriors are pegged as 6-point underdogs for Tuesday’ matchup.

NBA: New Orleans has covered the number in just three of the club’s last games.

NBA: Dallas has played over in 13 of its last 16 games and has covered in six of its last seven overall.

NBA: Orlando has played under in nine of its last 10. The Magic are set as a 7-point home favorite against New York on Tuesday with the total pegged at 213.

NHL: Colorado has won just six times over its last 26 games. The Avalanche are set as huge +245 underdogs at San Jose on Tuesday.

NHL: Columbus has won eight of its last 11 games but has won only six times in the club’s last 19 dates in Vancouver. The Blue Jackets are set at +170 for Tuesday’s game.

NHL: Florida is 5-14 in its last 19 games and has won just four times in its last 29 games in Carolina.

NCAAB: Purdue has won and covered each of its last six games heading into Tuesday’s contest against Illinois.

NCAAB: Kentucky is just 2-6-1 ATS in its last nine games. The Wildcats host Vanderbilt on Tuesday.

      Number of note

4.5 – The Colorado Avalanche have given up an average of 4.5 goals over their last eight games, helping over bettors cash in five times over that span. The club has also allowed at least one power-play goal in each of those eight games. Colorado’s penalty killing unit ranks last in the NHL shutting down only 76.7 percent of the power plays it faces.

      Notes and tips

NBA refs can have a huge impact on your bets. Check out our NBA referee stats here, where you’ll find extensive information about specific referees' tendencies. Right now, Sean Wright, Tony Brothers and Mark Ayotte are all helping out over bettors in a big way while Mark Lindsay, James Capers and Michael Smith are the biggest homer refs in the Association.

Monday's NHL trade deadline came and went after 16 total trades, but without many big names changing places. The Los Angeles Kings brought Dustin Penner and his 21 goals with the Oilers and he's expected to find a home on the No. 1 line with Anze Kopitar. The Washington Capitals swung a pair of deals and hope to have both Jason Arnott and Denis Wideman in the lineup Tuesday against the Islanders. Meanwhile, the Vancouver Canucks added some depth by bringing in forwards Chris Higgins and Maxim Lapierre to town. Lapierre should suit up Tuesday against Columbus, but Higgins will be out for about another month with a broken thumb.

Milwaukee center Andrew Bogut left Monday’s practice early telling the media he “can’t comment” on the reason for his early exit. Bogut is already dealing with a sore left elbow and coach Scott Skiles said later that the big Aussie may be also dealing with a left ribcage injury. His status is now in question for Tuesday’s game against Detroit. Bogut is averaging 12.6 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.

        Tuesday's six-pack

-- NFL issued 715 media credentials to this week’s Scouting Combine. 715. Wow. Too bad there's going to be a work stoppage. Interest in the NFL has never been higher.

-- Still funny to hear how college QB’s who played mostly shotgun in college need work on taking snaps from center. I know its true, but it just seems weird, being the most basic part of playing QB.

-- Carlos Beltran is moving to RF, which helps the Mets and should help Beltran, though RF in CitiField is spacious and certainly no picnic to play. Mets are set in centerfield with Angel Pagan.

-- Jacob Pullen has really backed up his talk from last month (“I’m not playing in the NIT.") Wildcats have recovered from their midseason funk and are looking like a formidable team for the NCAAs.

-- Cleveland Cavaliers are terrible team, but they’re also 6-0-1 vs spread in their last seven home games, so they’ve got that going for them.

-- March 1 is National Pancake Day. Just thought you’d like to know.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random stuff on a winter day........

        13) One of the best parts of March, other than tournament basketball, is daily boxscores from spring training. Love boxscores; the trick to March boxscores is not taking them too seriously.

Few years, ago Brandon McCarthy dominated the Cactus League; I made it my personal mission to get him on my fantasy team, which I did, only to find out that he and Ozzie Guillen didn’t get along too well. Not good. He wound up getting traded to Texas, bad place for a flyball pitcher.

Oddly enough, McCarthy is now in camp with my A’s, so hope he does well and helps the squad contend this season.

        12) NBC's Johnny Miller compared Eldrick Woods to Mike Tyson this weekend; I’m thinking that wasn’t a compliment.

        11) Lot of Division I hoop teams are very fragile; Xavier/USC both play 7-man rotations. Even though teams can give up to 13 scholarships, lot of them don't, especially teams with new coaching staffs.

Boston College started a kid Saturday and played him 35 minutes—the kid is in his fourth year of college but never played college ball until this year. If you saw him play in high school, and I did, there is no way on God’s green earth you would ever have said this kid would make an ACC roster, but he’s smart and can shoot it a little, and that is more important in BC's system than in most teams'.

        10) Funny thing is, the kid’s dad is one of the best referees in the country, and the dad works ACC games (he did Maryland-Carolina Sunday night), so I’m guessing he won’t work the ACC tournament as long as Boston College is involved.

        9) Another tough injury for Louisville, as Rakeem Buckles tore his ACL and is done for the year. They’ve had lot of bad luck this year.

        8) Sunday’s win at the Match Play tournament pushed Luke Donald over the $20M career earnings mark. Guy is 33 years old.

        7) Knicks haven’t won a playoff game in ten years; last time they won a playoff game was in a 3-2 series loss to Toronto in 2001. They lost 4-0 in their last playoff appearance, against the Nets in '04.

        6) Was cool to get a glimpse inside the Virginia Tech team room before Saturday night’s Duke game, and hear Seth Greenberg talk about playing “ten 4:00 games”, referring to the time in between TV timeouts. That’s what coaches of underdogs always talk about at this time of year, playing shorter, more manageable games.

        5) Minnesota Vikings are said to be interested in Donovan McNabb to play QB next year, to which I reply, “Why?”

        4) The 2010 Tampa Bay Buccaneers were first NFL team in 20 years to start ten rookies in the same game.

        3) People get all carried away by the NFL Combine. 11 years ago, a QB from a midwestern college ran a 5.23 40-yard dash at the Combine and slipped down draft boards all over the league. He finally got drafted in the 6th round. You may have heard of him- he turned out OK.

        The quarterback was Tom Brady.

        2) I’m not criticizing Erik Spoelstra at all, but I’m just saying that in this win now-or-else world, the clock might be ticking on him to show some “big” wins. Pat Riley had to be steamed after losing to the Knicks Sunday night. How many more losses to good teams (Miami is 1-8 vs “good” teams) before Riley comes down from the stands and takes over the Heat?

        1) I really, really hope that Charlie Sheen has a good friend who will pull him aside and tell him “Enough!!!” before its too late and a tragedy happens. The guy is a disaster just waiting to happen.
