Pucking the trends: This week's hot and cold NHL bets
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

    HOT TEAM: Columbus Blue Jackets

Columbus enters Sunday’s tilt vs. Nashville riding a three-game winning streak. The Blue Jackets have won five of six, they have points in all six on that stretch, and are guaranteed at least eight victories this month.

Three of their five wins came at home and as favorites but the club still pulled out a surprising 4-3 win at Chicago against the defending champs.

As play began on Sunday, they were still on the outside looking in, with regards to the playoffs, but they were only three points out of the eighth spot and they had at least one game in hand on the whole conference.

At the forefront of the surge, is All-Star Rick Nash, who’s played like the star the Blue Jackets need on the ice and at the box office. He has five goals in his last six games, helping Columbus score four or more goals in each of its last three contests.

    COLD TEAM: Anaheim Ducks

If there’s a hot team in the bottom of the West playoff race, it probably means there’s a cold one, too, and that is true for Anaheim these days.

The Ducks entered Sunday’s game vs. Colorado on a five-game losing streak, and it’s been uglier than it even sounds. Anaheim has allowed 27 goals during that stretch including seven to Washington on Feb. 16, and nine to St. Louis on Feb. 19.

It’s safe to say this team is missing its starting goalie. Jonas Hiller is still out because of vertigo symptoms but Anaheim just recently acquired Dan Ellis from Tampa Bay. Bettors might have to take a wait-and-see approach with Anaheim once Ellis gets between the pipes.

    OVER PLAY: Ottawa Senators

OK, so this might be a tough sell after the Senators handcuffed the Flyers, 4-1, on Saturday night, but don’t be fooled by 2.5 hours of hockey. We all know strange things happen on Hockey Night in Canada anyway.

What can’t be undersold is that new-look Ottawa -- with youngsters up from the AHL and a new goalie still finding his way -- seems bound to be an over play for the rest of the season.

Saturday’s win went under by a half but let’s take a look at the numbers. The under snapped a two-game over streak, yes, but Ottawa has still pushed past the total in nine of its last 11 games.

Craig Anderson has been good in net since the trade from Colorado, but remember his defense will be young and shaky the rest of the way.

And let’s see how that defense responds to a tough trifecta this week, to open the month of March: Boston, Atlanta and the Rangers. Think over, folks.

    UNDER PLAY: New Jersey Devils

Well, their winning ways finally came to an end, with a 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Friday, but the unders just keep on coming for New Jersey.

Johan Hedberg has been tremendous in net and the offense is still slow enough for the Devils to be a consistent under buy the rest of the way. They entered Sunday’s game vs. Florida having gone under in four straight, and were in the midst of a 7-0-2 under run. That’s a quality, consistent stretch for any under player.

In fact, prior to the game vs. the Panthers, the Devils had gone over in a game just once all month.

    SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE

** Just what the East-leading Flyers needed, right? Rest. Philadelphia, fresh off four games last week, won’t return to the ice until Thursday night. So, expect some rejuvenated legs, when they play host to the Maple Leafs at the Wells Fargo Center on four days’ rest.

** The Canucks won’t be so lucky. On Tuesday, Vancouver plays host to the Blue Jackets in a game which will start a run of four contests in six days. For a team that is just 4-5 in its last nine, Vancouver might want to get it together in this stretch, in which it’ll also play the Predators, Kings and Ducks.

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Blackhawks at Minnesota Wild (+105, 5.5)

The Blackhawks are finally getting healthy – and the team is netting the results. Literally.

With the majority of its top skaters back in uniform for the first stretch of the season, Chicago has found its scoring touch. In seven of its past eight games, the team has notched three or more goals. Not surprisingly, the team is 5-3 over that span. The team’s offensive catalysts during that streak have been forwards Patrick Kane (five goals, six assists), Jonathan Toews (10 points) and Patrick Sharp (six goals, nine points).

"I don't think there should be any complacency," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "It's where we want to be, but I think you want to just keep pushing ahead. The rearview mirror is so tight that you want to be thinking, 'We have to win this next game' and go on and on. We still haven't had that run we need but we do have some momentum."

On the other bench, the Wild are 4-4 in their past eight games and are dealing with a slew of injuries. Forwards Kyle Brodziak and Mikko Koivu, both integeral parts of the team’s attack, are expected to miss the game and scrappy defender Cam Barker likely will be out with an upper body injury.

The Wild just won’t have enough to keep up with the Blackhawks.

      Pick: Chicago

Detroit Red Wings at Los Angeles Kings (-125, 5.5)

If there is one team the Kings aren’t intimidated by, it’s the Detroit Red Wings.

The Red Wings have been among the rulers of the Western Conference for more than a decade, but Los Angeles has won four straight against Detroit, including a 3-2 overtime win in California in early December followed by a 5-0 victory in Hockey Town about a week later.

And the team is playing just as well entering Monday night. Los Angeles has gone through dry spells this year, but is averaging just under three goals per game over its past eight. During that span, the team is 6-2 and has scored three or more goals six times. But the way starting goalie Jonathan Quick is playing, he doesn’t need that much help.

Quick has a 2.13 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage to go along with six shutouts – including the one against Detroit earlier this year. In that victory in the Motor City, he made a stunning 51 saves that even had the Red Wings shaking their heads.

"Hats off to Quickie. He played a hell of a game. He stole that one," Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard said. "He was in a zone. There's nothing you can do about it. He was stopping everything. I think we could have went all night and he probably still would have gave up zero. He was just in one of those zones."

Don’t expect him to give up must this time, either.

      Pick: Los Angeles

What bettors need to know: Hawks at Nuggets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Denver Nuggets (-6, 202)

                    THE STORY
: The new-look Denver Nuggets seek a third win in four games since the desertion of Carmelo Anthony when the road-weary Atlanta Hawks visit Monday. Denver topped Memphis and Boston prior to losing 107-106 in overtime at Portland on Friday. The Nuggets are 24-7 at home, including 9-1 against the East. Atlanta is 3-3 on its seven-game road trip and will play its third game in four nights.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, SportSouth, Altitude

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (34-26 SU, ): With Anthony and coach George Karl exchanging barbs since the All-Star forced a trade, the Nuggets have seemingly rallied around each other, and Karl is trying to find ways to construct a rotation for a team that is one of the deepest in the league. Denver blew an 11-point lead at Portland – its 12th loss when leading by double digits this season compared. The Nuggets had only 13 last season. Danilo Gallinari scored 30 points and fellow newcomer Wilson Chandler added 20 Friday.

ABOUT THE HAWKS (36-23): Atlanta is looking forward to returning home for its next four games, albeit against Chicago, Oklahoma City, the Los Angeles Lakers and New York. The Hawks are coming off two impressive road triumphs against Golden State and Portland, and are 7-5 in the second game of back-to-backs on the road. The Hawks are 1.5 games behind Orlando for the No. 4 seed and homecourt in the first round of the playoffs. Jamal Crawford scored 23 points off the bench in a 90-83 victory at Portland on Sunday. Kirk Hinrich, acquired from Washington to replace an ineffective Mike Bibby, scored eight points in 17 minutes off the bench against Golden State on Friday and added eight in 29 minutes Sunday.

WHO’S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Crawford’s outing against Portland was his highest since putting up 34 against the Los Angeles Clippers on Feb. 4. He didn't reach double figures in six of his next eight games. Jeff Teague, who started the first two games since the Bibby trade, shot 3 of 13. Denver center Nene is riding consecutive doubles-doubles for the second time this season. Nuggets point guard Raymond Felton has shot 15 of 49 in his last four games – two with New York and two in Denver.

KEY STATISTIC: The Hawks have won 19 road games, second most in the Eastern Conference, and the most in Hawks franchise history through this point of the season.

SEASON SERIES: This is the first of two meetings this season. The clubs have split the season series the last five years, but Denver has won three straight at home.

KEY INJURIES: ATLANTA: None. Denver: F Danilo Gallinari (left toe).

LAST WORD: “We've got too many talented kids. It may not be the same script every night, but we'll figure out how to score points and we'll figure out how to win if we defend and play hard.” – Karl, talking about replacing the scoring ability of Anthony and Chauncey Billups.

TRENDS: Denver is 4-0 ATS in its last four games and 2-0 ATS since Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups were traded to the Knicks. The Nuggets are also 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games as a favorite.

The Hawks are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games on the second night of a back-to-back set, but just 1-7 ATS in their last eight games following an ATS win.

The under is 6-1 in Atlanta's last seven games but 0-5 in the club's last five games against winning teams.
