    Daily Sports Roundup: February 28

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Celtics arrive in Utah for a game against the Jazz, while Notre Dame hosts Villanova, and the Red Wings take the ice in Los Angeles.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has five games on tap for Monday, with Phoenix at New Jersey, Chicago at Washington, Atlanta at Denver, the Clippers at Sacramento, and Boston at Utah. The Celtics (42-15 SU, 27-28-2 ATS) got past the Clippers 99-92 in Los Angeles last time out, while the Jazz (32-28 SU, 26-33-1 ATS) fell 120-116 in Detroit in their last outing. The Celtics are 1-0 against the Jazz this season, beating them 110-86 at home as a 6-point favorite in that OVER result. Kevin Garnett was good for 21 points for Boston in that win, while Paul Pierce picked up 20 points. Rajon Rondo chipped in with 12 assists that day. Paul Millsap and Andrei Kirilenko each tossed in 11 points for Utah in that loss.

The college hoops schedule features a pair of games involving ranked teams on Monday, with Kansas State at No. 5 Texas, and No. 15 Villanova at No. 9 Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish (23-5 SU, 13-10 ATS) are coming off a 60-48 win over Seton Hall in their last game, with Tim Abromaitis picking up 22 points for Notre Dame in that contest. The Wildcats (21-8 SU, 11-14 ATS) fell 81-68 against St. John's last time out despite 20 points from Corey Stokes. Villanova beat the Irish 90-72 when they played last January.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are just a pair of games on the NHL's schedule for Monday, with Chicago at Minnesota and Detroit at Los Angeles. The 38-18-6 Red Wings got past the Sabres 3-2 in Buffalo in a shootout in their last game on Saturday night, with Joey MacDonald stopping 30 of 32 Buffalo shots. Pavel Datsyuk and Jiri Hudler had the Wings' markers in that contest. The 35-23-4 Kings are coming off a 4-3 home win over Colorado last time out, with Anze Kopitar, Alec Martinez, Drew Doughty, and Jarret Stoll all scoring goals. Jonathan Quick had to make just 14 saves to secure the win for Los Angeles that day. Detroit and Los Angeles have already met twice this year, with the Kings going 2-0.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Injury of interest

Andray Blatche, Washington Wizards: Blatche has missed the last two games with a hip injury and is considered questionable for Monday’s contest against the Bulls. Blatche is putting up almost 16 points and eight rebounds per game, but is also in hot water with the club’s brass after allegedly posting a couple of nasty tweets, challenging a follower to a fight last week. Blatche says he wasn’t responsible for the tweets and that his account was hacked.

      Key trends

NBA: The Chicago Bulls have won and covered six of their last seven games heading into Monday’s contest against the Washington Wizards.

NBA: New Jersey has lost five straight games, covering in only one of those defeats.

NBA: Atlanta has covered in 14 of its last 19 matchups with the Denver Nuggets.

NBA: Utah has covered just eight of its last 28 games overall.

NCAAB: Notre Dame is riding an 7-3 run against the spread, while Villanova has dropped six straight games against the number.

NCAAB: Kansas State is 8-1-1 ATS in its last 10 meetings with Texas.

NHL: Chicago has won just four times over its last 15 games in Minnesota, while the under has cashed in on nine of the Wild’s last 10 home games.

NHL: Detroit has won six of its last eight games overall and has taken 22 of its last 26 meetings with Los Angeles.

      Number of note

10 – number of consecutive games the Villanova Wildcats have been favored in. The Wildcats have managed to cover just once over that span heading into Monday's game against Notre Dame. Villanova is set as a 4.5-point underdog.

      Notes and tips

Mo Williams and Jamario Moon have joined the Los Angeles Clippers following the trade that sent Baron Davis to Cleveland, and it looks as though they will debut for their new team in Monday’s game in Sacramento. The pair was held out of the team’s games over the weekend because Baron Davis didn’t pass his physical until Sunday afternoon. All players involved in a trade must pass their physicals before any of them can play for their new teams.

Notre Dame can secure a double-bye in the Big East conference tournament with a victory over Villanova on Monday. The Irish have been hot lately, reeling off wins in nine of its last 10 games while Villanova is coming off a blowout loss to St. John’s over the weekend. "That double-bye is big for us," Irish coach Mike Brey said. "It keeps us looking forward and not behind us. There is a lot going on back there and I've tried to talk to the team about chasing (first-place) Pittsburgh rather than looking back."

The Texas Longhorns will be happy to get back home after suffering a pair of tough road losses which dropped the club into a first-place tie in the Big 12. Texas has won each of its last seven home games heading into Monday’s contest with Kansas State. During those wins, Texas has won by an average margin of 17 points and the club is pegged as a 9.5-point favorite against Kansas State.

        Monday's six-pack

-- Louisville beat Pitt despite shooting 34% from floor, 8-30 from arc and having a technical foul called on one of its male cheerleaders.

-- Siena beat Marist 81-73, finishing MAAC play an imperfect 0-11 vs spread as a favorite. That doesn't happen very often; Saints went 8-10 in a league when they were favored in 11 of the 18 games.

-- Cam Newton ran a 4.59 40-yard dash at the Combine but completed only 11 of 21 passes; one way or other, he's #1 story on draft night.

-- Jeff Gordon snapped a 66-race winless streak in Phoenix; thats good for NASCAR, having Gordon back in Victory Lane.

-- Supposedly, Julio Jones had a big day at the NFL Combine, closing the gap somewhat between he and AJ Green for the #1 WR in draft.

-- Coaching carousel started spinning, as Georgia State/Monmouth both fired their coaches this weekend. You don't win, you get fired; you win and cheat or lie to the NCAA, you still have a job. Just keep winning.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college basketball weekend

        13) Quite a scene in Blacksburg, with Virginia Tech upsetting Duke and Seth Greenberg having a group hug with his three daughters afterwards, as two of the girls cried tears of joy. Obviously, a big win for the Hokies.

        12) BYU made 14-24 from arc, had surprisingly easy time beating Aztecs in San Diego; when the guys other than Fredette make shots, they're very tough to beat. Fredette's excellence is pretty much a given.

        11) How about some love for Ben Howland? The guy doesn't have a great personality, but he's a terrific coach-- this year has been one of his better coaching jobs. UCLA is now tied for first in the Pac-10, and no one said that was going to happen when the predictions came out last fall.

        10) Wisconsin-Milwaukee came out of nowhere to win its last nine games and surprisingly get the top seed in the Horizon League tournament.

        9) Missouri State won regular season title in MVC, beating Wichita State 69-64, sweeping the season series with the Wheatshockers.

        8) Georgetown shot 34.6% in first full game without Wright, lost 58-51 at home to Syracuse; if Wright doesn't come back, Hoyas aren't an NCAA-caliber team. They're one of the Big East teams that is overrated.

        7) UTEP ripped Memphis 74-47; pretty obvious that Conference USA is a one-bid league- their conference tournament will be excellent.

        6) Colorado scored 58 second half points, rallying from 22-point deficit to upset Texas, 91-89, second straight road loss for the Longhorns.

        5) Cal Poly has a player named Drake U'u, and yes, I spelled that right.

        4) Harvard got upset 70-69 at Yale, which knocks them out of first-place tie for first place with Princeton. Since Ivy League doesn't have tourney after the season, regular season champ goes to NCAA tournament.

        3) UL-Lafayette finished regular season 14-14, which doesn't sound like a lot, until you realize they were once 3-14; tremendous coaching job by the Cajuns' new coach, Bob Marlin.

        2) Rough weekend in LA for Arizona Wildcats, getting swept by UCLA and USC. Young Wildcats are now tied for first in Pac-10 with UCLA.

        1) When Marshon Brooks scored 52 points earlier this week vs Notre Dame, he scored more points than 11 Division I teams did that night.

Pick 'n' roll: Today's best basketball bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                NBA

Atlanta Hawks at Denver Nuggets (-6, 201.5)

                Call it the Hinrich Effect.

With defensive minded point guard Kirk Hinrich on the team, the Hawks look like a totally different squad. The three previous games before he arrived the club was falling apart and had coughed up more than 100 points in each contest – all loses.

But when the former Jayhawks star suited up late last week in Golden State, he brought a whole new approach for the team. Playing nearly 17 minutes off the bench in his debut, he scored eight points with three rebounds, three steals and added a three-pointer, a free throw and a steal. Oh, and Atlanta won 95-79 over one of the top offensive teams in the league.

“It’s important that I understand what we are trying to do at both ends,” Hinrich said. “But a lot of times our lineups and our athleticism, I think the best way for us to play is to just play. Work hard on the defensive end and try to run.”

On the other bench, the Nuggets look good since trading Carmelo Anthony. In three games since shipping him to New York, the team is 2-1 SU and 3-0 ATS, with wins over Memphis and Boston. But Atlanta can match their depth and their athleticism and can counter with a renewed emphasis on defense and transition baskets.

                Pick: Atlanta

                NCAA

Villanova Wildcats at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-4, 139)

To say that Villanova is in a tailspin would be an understatement.

The team know for its three-point shooting, trapping defense and wide-open attack have failed to crack the 68-point barrier in four of the past six games. Not surprisingly, the Wildcats are 2-4 SU and 0-6 ATS over that span. And did we mention the victories are a two-point overtime win against an awful DePaul team and a three-point defeat of a terrible Seton Hall side?

"Honestly, I feel like we're getting - believe it or not - a little bit better, but not good enough for this league," Villanova coach Jay Wright said. "I don't think we're getting worse. If we didn't play a Syracuse, a St. John's, a Pitt, maybe it might show. But it's not good enough right now for this league."

And it’s not helping Villanova that star guard Corey Fisher picked a fine week to take off. In losses to Syracuse and St. John’s – both at home – the senior stud was 4-for-26 from the field and 0-of-16 from beyond-the-arc.

"He got good looks," Wright said. "I don't know. I really don't. The best thing that we can tell him is to keep shooting it. We have confidence in him. We're going to ride him."

The Irish will have no problem with that approach.

At home this season, Notre Dame is 16-0 SU and 7-4 ATS in lined games. Over the past six weeks the team has been especially good in South Bend, posting a 4-1 ATS mark that includes a win over Louisville and Cincinnati.

                Pick: Notre Dame

Notre Dame won nine of last ten games; they're 5-2 as Big East favorite at home, winning all eight home games by 14-3-15-8-5-7-10-12 points. Villanova is 2-0 as Big East underdog, but they're 4-6 SU last ten games, 1-9 vs spread, despite being favored in all ten. Big East home favorites of 7 or less points are 25-29 vs spread. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: Kansas State at Texas
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas State Wildcats at Texas Longhorns (-9.5, 135)

A suddenly reeling Texas Longhorns squad returns home to host resurgent Kansas State in a key Big 12 clash at the Frank Erwin Center Monday night.

                        HOUSE OF CARDS

Texas blew a big first-half lead and folded in a Big 12 road game for the second time in three games. The Longhorns fell 91-89 at Colorado on Saturday and the 91 points were the most surrendered by Texas this season.

As a result, the Longhorns (24-5, 12-2) fall into a first-pace tie with Kansas (27-2, 12-2) and it appears they are not likely to win their first outright league title since 1998.

The Buffaloes stormed back from a 22-point, first-half deficit and overcame a 48-33 halftime deficit behind Alec Burks' 33 points and Levi Knutson's 21. Texas shot just 29.4 percent in the second half.

A seven-point halftime lead at Nebraska vanished a week earlier in a 70-67 defeat. Despite the second-half meltdowns, Texas forward Jordan Hamilton is not concerned.

"It's not like we lost a ton-load of games. We've only lost two (conference) games," Hamilton said. "But I think it's good for us. We've just got to get back to the drawing board. We're not as good as we thought. Let me rephrase that: We didn't execute. That's what I meant to say.""

                        Longhorns coach Rick Barnes agreed.

"I really think it's very simple: the team that played for 40 minutes won the game," Barnes said. "I didn't feel like we had a real sense of urgency from the get-go.

“We didn't play with purpose, that was the problem. We got a lead early in the game and I've seen them evaporate quickly, but you can certainly help the cause by not making them defend and simply not executing. We didn't. We simply didn't execute."

Colorado outrebounded Texas 43-39 and outshot the 'Horns 53 percent to 42 percent.

The only other time this year the Longhorns have been outrebounded in conference play was their aforementioned loss at Nebraska last weekend.

                        BRACKETOLOGY

                        The loss doesn't kill Texas.

As the bracketology stands right now, if the Longhorns get a No. 1 seed they would be in Anaheim. A No. 2 seed could put them in San Antonio, which would be better for the team, fans and media alike.

                        ON THE PROWL

What a difference a month makes.

The Wildcats beat Missouri 80-70 in Manhattan on Saturday, their fourth win in a row and sixth in seven games since Wally Judge walked away four weeks ago.

KSU has taken on a totally new look and is playing like it, too. All the issues from before, from the suspensions and drama and quitting players, none of it matters now.

That’s because the Wildcats are approaching each game with a new attitude. And head coach Frank Martin is relishing the new work ethic of his young, re-molded squad.

“That’s what it’s about,” Martin says. “When you have a team, not (just) players.”

                        PULLEN IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

KSU leading scorer and star guard Jacob Pullen scored 24 points in Saturday’s win over Missouri, reaching a rare career milestone in the process. In addition, Curtis Kelly added 15 points and six rebounds for the born-again Wildcats (20-9, 8-6), who are battling Missouri (22-7, 8-6) for the fourth and final bye in the Big 12 tournament.

After being suspended midseason for the “crime” of accepting an offered discount on clothes, Pullen has come back with a vengeance. He joined Mike Evans to become one of two Kansas State players to go over the 2,000-point mark with Saturday’s performance.

What once looked like the face of one of the country’s most disappointing seasons, Pullen has become a poster boy for comeback-kids.
