UK looks for 4th straight home win over Florida

FLORIDA GATORS (22-5, 11-2 in SEC)

at KENTUCKY WILDCATS (19-8, 7-6 in SEC)

        Tip-off: Saturday, 4:00 p.m. EDT
        Line: Kentucky -8, Total: 135.5

With about a week to go in the regular season, and 13 conference games under their belts, this is what we know about the two top teams who were picked to contend for the Southeastern Conference crown. No. 13 Florida has proven itself to be experienced and poised at home and on the road, while No. 22 Kentucky, with all of its talented freshmen, has not. Pure and simple. Time after time when the Gators have been pushed to perform under pressure, an upperclassman has answered the bell. When Kentucky has been put in the same position, a freshman has not, especially on the road. Now with just a handful of games left to go, the Gators are playing for postseason positioning, while the Wildcats are trying to re-discover what it was that made them a pre-season terror, as opposed to what’s making them a late-season mess that’s been prone to error.

Wednesday night the Wildcats did what they’ve been doing of all year long, playing the role of the visiting Washington Generals to an SEC team playing on its home court. Kentucky fell to the Arkansas Razorbacks in Fayetteville, 77-76, in overtime. It was the sixth road defeat in conference play for the ‘Cats, leaving head coach John Calipari at a loss for everything, except for extreme disappointment. "If you're not angry by this, like angry that this is happening and that we're going to stop this from happening, it won't change," Calipari said. "I know I'm angry."

The source of Calipari’s anger? Kentucky had the ball and a 76-75 lead in the extra session with a minute to play. That’s when Arkansas’ Jeff Peterson picked off an errant pass, passed ahead to Marcus Britt who made a layup with 0:17 left that would prove to be the game winner. Kentucky managed to get to the FT line only 15 times in 45 minutes of total play, a very low total for a game that went to overtime. Additionally, the Wildcats were just 3-for-19 from three-point territory (16%). Brandon Knight led the Wildcats with 26 points, but did so shooting 8-for-23 from the floor. Calipari used just seven players in the game, and three of the starters played over 40 minutes, with a fourth player coming off the bench to play 39. Could fatigue be a factor on this young team that’s been lacking for depth all year? In the first game this year against Florida, Knight scored 24 points while Terrence Jones added 18, and the Wildcats had a chance to defeat Florida on a last-second shot, but Knight’s three-pointer was errant, and the Gators escaped with a 70-68 victory. Saturday the scene shifts to Lexington, where Kentucky, for the fourth time this year, will try and bounce back from an SEC road defeat with a victory in Rupp Arena.

The Gators are coming off a 71-62 victory Thursday night over the Georgia Bulldogs, in a game in which they clinched at least a share of the SEC East Division for the first time since 2007, securing a #1 seed in the conference postseason tournament in the process. Florida (22-5, 11-2 SEC) has won 14 of its past 16 games, including six in a row. The backcourt of Kenny Boynton and Erving Walker scored 18 and 15 points respectively, and forward Chandler Parsons gutted his way through a painful deep thigh bruise to total 16 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. The Gators trailed 33-26 at the half, but used an 18-9 run in the first 7:08 of the second half to wrestle away the lead from the ‘Dawgs and keep it for good. Florida is going for its first sweep of the season series versus Kentucky since the ‘06-07 season, when the Gators stormed through the SEC en route to a league title, before storming through the rest of the nation en route to a national title. April 2, 2007 was the last NCAA Tournament game that the Gators won, they eagerly look forward to breaking that drought this year as well.

The Wildcats are starting to hit their stride, outscoring SEC opponents by nearly 20 PPG at home (79.0 to 59.5). They have won the past three meetings in Lexington over Florida, and this year the Gators are 11-2 SU in conference play, but just 6-7 ATS. These two FoxSheets trends also like Kentucky to win and cover.

KENTUCKY is 16-4 ATS (80.0%, +11.6 Units) after failing to cover 6 or 7 of their last 8 against the spread since 1997. The average score was KENTUCKY 74.4, OPPONENT 63.6 - (Rating = 2*).

John Calipari is 29-11 ATS (72.5%, +16.9 Units) revenging a road loss vs opponent in all games he has coached since 1997. The average score was Calipari 72.1, OPPONENT 63.0 - (Rating = 2*).

UCLA favored by 2.5 points over #10 Arizona

          ARIZONA WILDCATS (23-5, 12-3 in Pac-10)

          at UCLA BRUINS (20-8, 11-4 in Pac-10)

          Tip-off: Saturday, 4:00 p.m. EDT
          Line: UCLA -2.5, Total: 140

No. 10 Arizona looks to claim at least a share of the Pac-10 title when it visits UCLA on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats averaged 81.3 PPG during their eight-game winning streak and rank No. 21 in the nation in scoring (77.6 PPG). But they were held to their lowest scoring output of the season in a 65-57 loss at USC on Thursday. Derrick Williams (19.3 PPG, 8.2 RPG), who shoots 61.6% from the floor, was limited to a season-low eight points on 3-of-11 shooting and saw his double-digit scoring streak end at 36 games. Lamont Jones (9.6 PPG), who averaged 14.3 PPG during the win streak, had only nine points on 3-of-12 shooting. Arizona, which is 22nd in the nation in field-goal percentage (47.5%), shot just 35.8% (19-of-53) versus the Trojans and was outscored 15-3 in the final 3:59. The Wildcats have already beaten UCLA this season, an 85-74 decision on Jan. 27 in Tucson. Williams led the way with 22 points, and the backcourt of Jones, Kyle Fogg (8.4 PPG) and Jordin Mayes (4.7 PPG) combined for 39 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

UCLA has won 11 of its past 13 games and is coming off a 71-53 win over last-place Arizona State on Thursday. Malcolm Lee (13.7 PPG) led five Bruins in double figures with 16 points. Lazeric Jones (10.2 PPG) added 10 points and 10 assists, and Reeves Nelson (13.5 PPG, 8.8 RPG) chipped in with 12 points and 12 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season. Nelson has tallied back-to-back double-doubles versus Arizona, averaging 21.5 PPG on 85.7% shooting to go with 10.0 RPG in the past two games against the Wildcats. UCLA is 1-1 against teams that were ranked at the time it played them. The Bruins lost to Villanova, 82-70, and defeated BYU, 86-79.

Arizona has won 15 of the past 27 meetings with UCLA, including four of the past five contests. But the Wildcats are just 13-29 all-time in Westwood, where the Bruins are 15-2 at home this season and are seeking a seventh consecutive Pac-10 victory. Arizona had lost four straight at UCLA by an average of 15.0 PPG before winning at Pauley Pavilion last season, 77-63, behind Fogg's 25 points. In that game, UCLA shot 2-of-15 on threes and the Wildcats went 6-for-10 from behind the arc.

Arizona is getting all the publicity in the Pac-10, but the Bruins deserve almost as much love. They are 10-2 (7-5 ATS) in their past 12 games, including a win over St. John’s, which is now ranked 23rd in the nation. Since losing at Arizona on Jan. 27, UCLA is 6-1 and has outshot each of its opponents (four by +9% FG) and outrebounded the seven teams by an average of 7.0 RPG. These two FoxSheets trends also support playing UCLA to win and cover.

UCLA is 6-0 ATS (+6.0 Units) in home games after having won 3 of their last 4 games this season. The average score was UCLA 68.0, OPPONENT 55.0 - (Rating = 2*).

UCLA is 19-7 ATS (73.1%, +11.3 Units) in home games when playing against a team with a winning record over the last 3 seasons. The average score was UCLA 72.8, OPPONENT 63.4 - (Rating = 1*).

The past six meetings have all finished Over the total, but this FoxSheets trend sides with the Under.

UCLA is 8-1 UNDER (+6.9 Units) in home games versus good ball handling teams - committing <=14 turnovers/game this season. The average score was UCLA 67.6, OPPONENT 60.1 - (Rating = 2*).

Jazz try to beat Pistons for 12th straight time

            UTAH JAZZ (32-27)

            at DETROIT PISTONS (21-39)

            Tip-off: Saturday, 7:30 p.m. EDT
            Line: Utah -4.5, Total: 193

The Jazz and Pistons meet in the second of consecutive games for both teams on Saturday when the Utah travels to Detroit.

Utah snapped a five-game losing streak by defeating the Pacers on Friday night in Indiana. It was just the fifth win in the past 19 games for Utah, who is tied with Memphis for the eighth and final playoff spot out West. Utah is 27-32 ATS, but has won three of its past four road games ATS. Al Jefferson scored 30 points in the win over the Pacers and is averaging 28.8 PPG over his past four games, making 59.0 percent of his shot attempts. Paul Millsap scored 23 points and grabbed 18 rebounds against Indiana, and is averaging 21.0 PPG over his past three games. Millsap scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in Utah’s win over the Pistons earlier this season.

The Pistons season is beginning to unravel and might soon spiral completely out of control. On Friday, four players (Tracy McGrady, Tayshaun Prince, Rip Hamilton and Chris Wilcox) missed a shoot-around for what some believe was an organized protest against head coach John Kuester. Two other players (Rodney Stuckey and Austin Daye) were late to the shoot-around, which led Kuester to play only six players in the Pistons loss to the 76ers on Friday night. Detroit is 32-28 ATS this season and has lost five of its past six ATS at home. Kuester, who benched the disgruntled Hamilton on Jan. 12, was ejected in the second quarter Friday after he was whistled for two quick technical fouls. McGrady and his teammates laughed as their coach headed toward the locker room. The possibility of dissension could stem from the Pistons' season-long struggles. They are 6 1/2 games out of the final playoff spot in the East, and rank near the bottom of the league in scoring (95.1 PPG).

The Jazz will be looking for their 12th straight win against the Pistons. Their 11-game win streak against Detroit is currently their longest win streak against any opponent. They have won five straight at the Palace of Auburn Hills, averaging 106.4 PPG. With the Pistons in complete disarray, I’m taking Utah to win on the road.

            FoxSheets says:

UTAH is 33-15 ATS (68.8%, +16.5 Units) after playing a game as an underdog over the last 2 seasons. The average score was UTAH 104.5, OPPONENT 98.8 - (Rating = 2*).

Play Against - Home underdogs (DETROIT) - revenging a road loss vs opponent, extremely tired team - when playing their 3rd game in 4 days. (182-122 over the last 5 seasons.) (59.9%, +47.8 units. Rating = 2*).

No. 1 Duke brings 7-game win streak to Va. Tech

DUKE BLUE DEVILS (26-2, 12-1 in ACC)

at VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES (18-8, 8-5 in ACC)

              Tip-off: Saturday, 9:00 p.m. EDT
              Line: Duke -4, Total: 142

No. 1 Duke looks to extend its winning streak to eight games when it visits Virginia Tech on Saturday night.

The Blue Devils are coming off a 78-61 non-conference home victory over Temple on Wednesday. Kyle Singler (17.2 PPG, 6.3 RPG) broke out of his shooting slump and scored 28 points on 10-of-19 from the floor. It marked Singler's first 20-point game in six contests and the most points he's tallied since a 30-point effort on Nov. 27 versus Oregon. Nolan Smith (21.4 PPG, 5.3 APG, 38.3% three-pointers) finished with 15 points, but shot just 5-of-17 from the field. The Blue Devils hit 46.6% of their field goals (27-of-58) and limited the Owls to 39.3% from the floor (24-of-61). In its last ACC game, Duke defeated Georgia Tech, 79-57, on Feb. 20 behind Smith's 28 points, his league-best 16th 20-point game of the season. Duke has won 10 consecutive ACC games since falling at Florida State, 66-61, on Jan. 12. It ranks seventh in the nation in scoring (82.9 PPG) and is averaging 75.6 PPG during its winning streak.

Virginia Tech has won five of its past seven games and 14 of its past 18 contests, but it has only played two ranked teams all season, losing both games against Kansas State (73-57) and Purdue (58-55 in overtime). The Hokies defeated Wake Forest on the road on Tuesday, 76-62, as Malcolm Delaney (19.1 PPG, 4.2 APG, 42.7% three-pointers), Jeff Allen (13.8 PPG, 10.3 RPG) and Jarell Eddie (3.2 PPG) scored 17 points apiece. Va. Tech had no problem putting the ball in the basket against the Demon Deacons. Wake shot 60.0% from the field (27-of-45), including 8-of-12 from long range (66.7%).

The two teams met once last season, and Duke defeated Virginia Tech at home, 67-55, behind Singler's 25 points and 10 rebounds and Smith's 23 points. The last time they played in Blacksburg was February 2009, and the Blue Devils won, 72-65, thanks to Singler's 21 points. Although Duke is 7-2 in the nine meetings since the Hokies joined the ACC, the ATS margin is just 5-4 in favor of the Blue Devils. Although Duke has been a great road play this year at 7-2 ATS, the Hokies are 6-1 ATS in their past seven home games, including 4-1 ATS versus conference foes. This game is a lot more meaningful to VT’s tournament chances, and I expect the Hokies to play with great passion in front of a raucous crowd on national television. These two FoxSheets trends also support Virginia Tech as the pick to cover the spread on Saturday.

VIRGINIA TECH is 6-0 ATS (+6.0 Units) off a win by 10 points or more over a conference rival over the last 2 seasons. The average score was VIRGINIA TECH 71.9, OPPONENT 63.5 - (Rating = 1*).

VIRGINIA TECH is 15-6 ATS (+8.4 Units) versus very good teams - outscoring their opponents by 8+ points/game after 15+ games over the last 3 seasons. The average score was VIRGINIA TECH 74.4, OPPONENT 73.4 - (Rating = 0*).

And this FoxSheets trend favors the Under.

Play Under - Home teams where the total is between 140 and 149.5 points (VIRGINIA TECH) - good defensive team - shooting pct defense of <=42% on the season, after a game where a team made 60% of their shots or better. (47-18 since 1997.) (72.3%, +27.2 units. Rating = 3*).
