    Daily Sports Roundup: February 25

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Clippers and Lakers renew the battle of Los Angeles, Harvard and Princeton look for Ivy League wins, and the Caps host New York.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up a dozen games on Friday, with Sacramento at Charlotte, Phoenix at Toronto, Utah at Indiana, Detroit at Philadelphia, New York at Cleveland, Washington at Miami, New Orleans at Minnesota, Oklahoma City at Orlando, New Jersey at San Antonio, Denver at Portland, Atlanta at Golden State, and the Clippers at the Lakers. The Clippers and Lakers have split their two meetings so far this season, with Kobe Bryant and company winning 87-86 as an 8-point favorite on December 8 but falling 99-92 as a 5.5-point favorite on January 16. Eric Gordon, who's currently out with a wrist injury, led the Clippers with 30 points in that January win, while Blake Griffin picked up 18 points and 15 rebounds. Bryant had a team-high 27 points in the loss for the Lakers.

As well, the Friday night college hoops slate is highlighted by the Ivy League action: Columbia at Pennsylvania, Dartmouth at Yale, Cornell at Princeton, and Harvard at Brown. Princeton (20-5 SU, 10-7 ATS) and Harvard (20-4 SU, 9-6 ATS) are fighting for top spot in the Ivy League standings, with Harvard at 9-1 in conference play and Princeton sitting at 8-1. The Crimson have won five games in a row, and they beat Brown 85-78 when the teams last met on February 12. The Tigers were beaten 75-65 by Brown in their last outing, but they edged Cornell 57-55 when they met February 12.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are nine games on the NHL's schedule for Friday, with Pittsburgh at Carolina, Phoenix at Columbus, Ottawa at Buffalo, New Jersey at Tampa Bay, Florida at Atlanta, San Jose at Calgary, St. Louis at Edmonton, Minnesota at Anaheim, and the Rangers at Washington. New York sits at 32-26-4 on the season after getting past Carolina 4-3 on the road in a shootout in their last game on Tuesday night; Brandon Prust, Ryan Callahan, and Wojtek Wolski had the goals in regulation time for the Rangers in that victory. The Capitals improved to 32-19-10 with a 1-0 shutout win in Pittsburgh in their last game on Monday night, as Michal Neuvirth made 39 saves and Alexander Ovechkin provided the marker. Washington is 1-2 against New York this year.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

      Who’s hot

NHL: The Coyotes are 8-1 in their last nine overall.

NCAAB: St. Peter’s is 4-0 in its last four overall and the over is 6-0 in its last six home games.

NBA: The Blazers are 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven overall and the over is 6-1 in their last seven overall.

NBA: The under is 4-0 in the Nets’ last four overall and 10-1 in the Spurs’ last 11 home games.

      Who’s not

NHL: The Thrashers are 0-7 in their last seven games against teams with losing records.

NCAAB: Columbia is 1-5 ATS in its last six overall.

NBA: The Timberwolves are 1-5 ATS in their last six overall and 0-6 ATS in their last six home games.

NBA: The Hawks are 1-5 ATS in their last six overall and 0-7 ATS in their last seven against the Western Conference.

      Key stat

12 – The number of holes by which unheralded American Ben Crane has won his first two matches at the Accenture Match Play Championship. Crane has not made a bogey in two rounds (27 holes during that span) and is a total of 10-under par. He defeated Adam Scott 4 and 2 in his opener before trouncing Rory McIlroy 8 and 7 on Thursday. Crane is going up against Spain’s Miguel Angel Jiminez in third-round action on Friday.

      Injuries that shouldn't be overlooked

The good news for the Indiana Pacers is that they face a Jazz team in a state of flux on Friday. Utah just shipped Deron Williams to New Jersey in exchange for Derrick Favors and Devin Harris. Favors and Harris should be in uniform, but the Jazz have to be reeling a bit from trade repercussions.

The bad news for Indiana is that it has problems of its own. Mike Dunleavy (11.2 ppg, 4.8 rpg) suffered a broken thumb during Wednesday’s win over the Wizards and is out indefinitely. T.J. Ford (5.7 ppg, 3.5 apg), who was not traded despite being the subject of many rumors, is out indefinitely with an ankle injury and will likely have his contract bought out sooner rather than later.

      Biggest game on the slate

Oklahoma City Thunder at Orlando Magic (-7, 206)

      Notable quotable

"We got our guy. We’re not a championship team right now. We’re not a playoff team right now. But coaches are going to lose a lot of sleep wondering how they play us at this position." – New Jersey Nets head coach Avery Johnson on his team’s point guard position after the trade with Utah for Deron Williams. The Nets visit San Antonio on Friday and should have Williams in uniform for the first time.

      Tips and notes

The Atlanta Thrashers sent veteran defenseman Brent Sopel and little-used forward Nigel Dawes to Montreal on Thursday in exchange for forward Ben Maxwell and a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft. Sopel, who played for the Blackhawks last season, had two goals and five assists in 59 games with Atlanta. The Thrashers are hosting the Florida Panthers on Friday. Florida, meanwhile, waived forward Steve Bernier on Thursday and fellow forward Jack Skille is dealing with an ankle problem.

Friday’s clash between Portland and Denver features a team that just added a major puzzle piece against a team that just traded away the face of the franchise. While the Nuggets dealt Carmelo Anthony earlier in the week, the Trail Blazers acquired Gerald Wallace from Charlotte for Joel Przybilla, Dante Cunningham and two future first-round draft picks. Wallace was averaging 15.6 ppg and 8.2 rpg for the Bobcats this season. He should be in uniform on Friday, and center Marcus Camby could also return from a knee injury. Denver, in addition to dealing with a new-look team, is also playing on no day’s rest after Thursday’s showdown with Boston.

Graeme McDowell will pass Tiger Woods for the No. 3 spot in the world when the next golf rankings come out. McDowell guaranteed himself the No. 3 ranking by reaching the third round of the Accenture Match Play Championship on Thursday. The Irishman has easily disposed of Heath Slocum and Ross Fisher this week and will face Y.E. Yang on Friday. "Wow, I'm perhaps a better golfer than (Tiger) in the last 12 months but he's definitely the greatest player that's ever lived," McDowell said. "If someone told me at some point in my career I would be number three in the world, I'd be proud of that fact…. Y.E. is a solid player and has got a great short game. He's going to be a tough competitor. So I'm looking forward to the match. I haven't been playing my best but I'm still alive and kicking, so anything can happen. Hopefully my confidence will continue to grow."

        Friday's six-pack

-- USC beat Arizona 65-57, setting up Wildcats' game this weekend at UCLA as the game of the year in the Pac-10.

-- UL-Lafayette has now won ten games in a row, beating Denver in OT to go to 10-5 in Sun Belt play. Cajuns have won lot of close games.

-- Miami's Chris Bosh shot 1-18 in Chicago last night, the worst night for an NBA player with 15+ shots since 1991.

-- Denver ended game on 16-0 run to beat Boston 89-75; Nuggets are now 2-0 since the Anthony trade, with both games at home.

-- Tremendous game in Moraga late Thursday, with Gonzaga winning in OT, 89-85. It really had the feel of an NCAA tournament game.

-- Mickey McConnell of St Mary's had played every second of Gaels' last nine games, until he fouled out with 0:11.9 left in overtime. Gritty player, a very good player. Tough kid.

        ************************

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts with the weekend here.......

        13) So I’m guessing the UTEP Miners didn’t enjoy their visit to East Carolina Wednesday; five technical fouls, two coaches ejected in a 83-76 loss where ECU was 35-45 from foul line, UTEP 11-17. An overzealous police officer jumped in to escort Tim Floyd off the court while he was still in mid-meltdown. Check it out on Youtube-- its worth it.

        12) All of which speaks to the fact that March Madness is almost here; nerves are frayed, tempers are flaring, coaches/players/referees are all tired—don’t underestimate the effect of refs being tired. Some of these guys are working five nights a week in five different cities. Has to effect their performance- some of these refs aren't exactly young.

        11) Baron Davis on the Cavaliers? No way this ends well. After not missing a game in his first three NBA seasons, Davis has played in only 502 of a possible 656 games since, and has missed the playoffs in six of seven seasons since leaving the Hornets. For the Cavs’ sake, I hope his contract is expiring.

        10) Meanwhile, Mo Williams goes from basketball hell in frigid Cleveland to being a teammate of Blake Griffin in LA; he has to be really happy.

        9) Three veteran major league umpires—Jerry Crawford, Mike Reilly and Chuck Meriwether are retiring, says MLB. You wonder if it was their decision, or if MLB made the decision for them.

        8) Wisconsin has played 17 Big 11 games; its point guard, Jordan Taylor, has only 17 turnovers in those 15 games. That’s terrific to have a kid who is that solid with the ball.

        7) Over last three years, Indiana Hoosiers are 3-25 from February 1st on. This year, they’re 1-5 in February. Not a lot of improvement there.

        6) Some NFL teams are going to furlough their employees if the expected lockout happens; wonder if they’ll refund any PSL money if games are lost next fall??? I'm thinking no way......

        5) NHL has quite a playoff race with 25% of the regular season still to go; in the West, there are seven teams separated by only two points, fighting for spots 5-8 in playoffs. This should be a lot of fun to watch.

        4) Every time I see San Diego State hoop coach Steve Fisher, he looks a little more like the late John Wooden.

        3) When Sacramento traded Carl Landry to the Hornets, they fell under the NBA’s salary floor, which is 75% of the cap ($43,533,000 this year). As a result, Kings have to either add a player who makes $1,043,965, or divide the cash amongst the players currently on the team, which, given a 15-man roster, would amount to $69,597.73 per player. Good money to get for doing absolutely nothing extra.

        2) Lot of extra feeling in the Arizona-USC game, with three Wildcats kids who were going to go to USC until Tim Floyd resigned in wake of NCAA investigation of the Trojans' program. Plus, Kevin O'Neill had been coach of Arizona a few years ago, when Lute Olson was ill, but got let go after he had been promised to be Olson's successor. Game was very intense.

        1) Congrats to Centenary, which beat Western Illinois at home, their first win in 29 games this season. Losing is no fun; congrats to the Gents.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best basketball bets
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          NBA

Oklahoma City Thunder at Orlando Magic (-7, 206)

Think of it as subtraction by addition for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The team tried to get tougher and bigger when it dealt outside shooting center Nenad Krstic and forward Jeff Green to Boston for defensive monster Kendrick Perkins and guard Nate Robinson.

However, the Thunder will be without Perkins – one of the best Dwight Howard defenders in the game – as he recovers from a sprained MCL. Plus, the team won’t have Krstic or Green for this matchup in Florida. Not good if you are looking to compare performances from a 125-124 Thunder victory in Oklahoma last month.

In that meeting, Krstic had 16 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. He also was a team-best plus-12. Green had 12 points and six rebounds and banged a team-high three triples.

That’s a lot to expect reserves Nick Collison and the offensively-challenged Serge Ibaka to make up for. And it’s not like either player slowed down Howard. The center had one of his top games of the season, dunking his way to 39 points and 18 rebounds.

“We have a lot of talent, but talent will not get you a championship,” Howard said. “We’re one of the most talented teams in the NBA. We’re a deep team. We’ve got guys who can do a lot of different things. But if we don’t bring it every night, it’s a waste of talent.”

And with the Magic coming off a six-point home loss to the lowly Kings, expect Howard and Co. to definitely bring it.

                          Pick: Orlando

                          NCAAB

                          Siena Saints at Farfield Stags

This game might end up putting the scorers table to sleep.

Fairfield is one of the top defensive teams in the country. Opponents are scoring just 58.1 points per game (5th nationally), making just 39.8 percent of their field goals (27th) and nailing a meager 32.2 percent of their shots from distance (76th). Heck, the team is so physical that opponents are shooting a horrendous 63.1 percent from the foul line, where they do get an uncontested look.

Not surprisingly, the team has seen the under go 12-8 this season. Plus, the low-scoring Stags offense also should be somewhat subdued with the continued absence of forward Greg Nero. The senior is recovering from Mono and has contributed 5.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game when healthy.

On the other bench, Siena has been greatly over valued by oddsmakers. The team has seen the under hit in 17 of 25 games and three of its past four overall.

Siena has struggled with the graduation of nearly all its star players the past two seasons and is a far cry from the perennial NCAA Tournament dark horse of the previous years.

And now the team must also deal with injuries. Key bench player Kyle Downey is averaging 6.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game this season but has been hobbled by a hip injury. He is questionable for Friday’s game.

If you still don’t believe, just look at the recent history between the teams: each of the past three meetings have cashed the under.

                          Pick: Under

Cram Session: Over/under trends by conference
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Summit League has been a gold mine for betting college basketball totals. There’s no reason to think that’s going to change as we head into the final week of the regular season and the conference tournament.

Games involving teams from the Summit League have gone over the total 62.79 percent of the time, by far the highest percentage of overs or unders produced by any conference. That means not only are the teams playing at a fast pace, but the conference’s referees also are calling the games in a manner conducive to producing higher-than-expected scores.

The Metro Atlantic is on the other side of the coin but to a lesser extent. Games involving MAAC teams have stayed under the total 57.02 percent of the time, the highest percentage of unders from any conference. The league’s average pace-of-play and the way refs are officiating the game are producing lower-than-expected scores.

At this point of the season, no coach is going to drastically shift his team’s style of play. And no official will be able to significantly alter his perception of the rules or how he applies them during a game. It will be up to oddsmakers to make the appropriate adjustments, something they’ve failed to do to this point.

There’s money to be made here betting totals down the stretch. We just have to be savvy enough to pinpoint the opportunities. Regardless, you’ll likely be picking from a larger pool of winners by adding a few Summitt League overs and a few WCC unders down the stretch.

                            Best over/under conferences

                            OVERS

It helps to have two of the highest scoring teams in the nation in Oakland (84.3) and South Dakota State (82.0). Only 11 teams in Division I average more than 80 points. Oakland is averaging 88.4 points in conference play.

Oakland and South Dakota State have combined to produce 36 overs and 12 unders.

The missing defense at Centenary has contributed as well. The Gentlemen have courteously allowed opponents to score 82.3 points in conference play.

Western Illinois is the only Summit League team to have been involved in more unders (13) than overs (5). The Leathernecks also are the worst ATS percentage team in the nation, having covered only three of 20 games.

MAC: Games involving teams from the MAC have eclipsed the total 56.8 percent (166-126). Conference games are averaging 135.04.
Buffalo, which is fourth in the nation in field-goal percentage and 15th in 3-point percentage, is the best of the bunch with a 16-6 over/under mark.

Conference games are averaging 134.1 points. Rider and Iona are the only two teams that produced more overs in the conference.

WCC: Games involving teams from the West Coast Conference have stayed under the total 55 percent of the time. Conference games are averaging 139.02.
Gonzaga, with the league’s top scoring defense, and San Diego, with the league’s worst offense, are both 7-17 over/unders.

                            Honorable Mention: Big East -- 54.8 percent (169-205); CUSA -- 53 percent 116-134.

Denver Nuggets at Portland Trailblazers [ESPN | 10:30 PM ET]

NUGGETS: Denver just might be a better team without Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups. As Nuggets fans wake up today, that is the water cooler topic for today. The Nuggets appear to be revitalized since the trade, as they no longer have to answer trade rumor after trade rumor. The Nuggets are 33-25 SU and 25-30-3 ATS overall this year. PG Ty Lawson will be counted on in a much bigger role for the rest of the year, and he appears to be up to the challenge.
