    Daily Sports Roundup: February 21

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Capitals and Penguins will both be looking for a win in Pittsburgh, and Syracuse takes on Villanova in a battle of ranked Big East clubs.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Kansas, top-ranked heading into the week, plays host to Oklahoma State in college hoops action on Monday, while No. 15 Villanova gets a visit from No. 17 Syracuse. The Orange (22-6 SU, 8-16 ATS) slipped past Rutgers 84-80 at home in overtime in their last game on Saturday, with Kris Joseph pouring in 21 points for Syracuse in that win. The Wildcats (21-6 SU, 11-12 ATS) are also coming off an overtime win, beating DePaul 77-75 on the road in the extra frame on Saturday; Corey Fisher exploded for 34 points for Villanova that day. Villanova and Syracuse last met on the hardwood back on January 22, with the Wildcats getting 21 points from Maalik Wayns in an 83-72 road win.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are three games on the NHL's schedule for Monday, with Florida at the Islanders, Chicago at St. Louis, and Washington at Pittsburgh. The Capitals and Penguins have already met three times this season, with Washington going 2-1 in those contests. The two teams most recently played on February 6 in Washington, with the home side winning 3-0 as a -160 favorite in the UNDER result. Brooks Laich, Marcus Johansson, and Mike Knuble had the goals for the Capitals in that contest, while Michal Neuvirth stopped all 22 Pittsburgh shots. Marc-Andre Fleury made 21 saves between the pipes that day for the Pens, who are still without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Injury of interest

Corey Stokes, Villanova Wildcats: Villanova’s senior guard is still considered questionable for Monday’s game against Syracuse as he’s still hobbled by turf toe. Stokes, who averages better than 14 points per game, also leads the nation with a 93.5 percent shooting percentage from the foul line and has missed three straight games. Coach Jay Wright said last week that Monday’s game would be the earliest possible return for Stokes, but he should be considered at best a game-time decision as of now.

      Key trends

NHL: The Florida Panthers have won their last three meetings with the Islanders, but have won only four of their last 15 games overall. Meanwhile, the Islanders have won five of their last six.

NHL: The St. Louis Blues have won three straight games, while three of their last four games have played under the total.

NHL: The Washington Capitals have won six of their last seven games against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

NCAAB: Villanova has covered in four of its last five meetings with Syracuse, but has dropped seven of its last eight overall against the number.

NCAAB: Kansas has covered in six of its last eight games, while playing over the total in seven of those contests.

      Number of note

7 - Oklahoma State is a long way from the club that started the year 9-3-1 against the spread in lined games. The Cowboys have lost six of their last eight games outright and have dropped the cash in seven of their last eight games heading into Monday’s contest against Kansas. Oklahoma State is pegged as a big 18-point underdog.

      Notes and tips

After being held to just three points and zero rebounds in 20 minutes of work in an upset loss to Kansas State, Kansas big man Markieff Morris blew up for 26 points and 15 rebounds in Saturday’s win over Colorado in a performance the Jayhawks have been waiting for. "I could tell that he was going to play well based on the way that he was practicing,” Marcus Morris told reporters. “He was totally dominating in practice and was dunking everything around the rim. Like coach said, practice refers to the game and that's exactly how he played. He dominated in practice, and he dominated in the game."

There’s a lot to be said about making a good first impression. Al Montoya knows all about that after stopping 35 shots in his debut with the New York Islanders, blanking the Los Angeles Kings for his sixth career shutout. He’s expected to get another start in goal Monday for the Islanders, who have won five of their last six games. New York is set as a -115 favorite against the visiting Florida Panthers.

The St. Louis Blues drastically reshaped their roster over the weekend, shipping captain Eric Brewer to the Tampa Bay Lightning before then acquiring Chris Stewart and Kevin Shattenkirk from Colorado for former No. 1 pick Erik Johnson and Jay McClement. The newcomers didn’t waste any time to chip in. Stewart scored twice and Shattenkirk added an assist in St. Louis’ 9-3 blowout win over Anaheim. The win was the third in a row for the Blues, who get back at it on Monday at home against the defending-champion Blackhawks.

        Monday's six-pack

-- Kudos to the MAAC for going 9-1 in Bracket Busters; top six clubs in the Missouri Valley Conference all lost (7-3 overall).

-- George Mason has the nation's longest winning streak, winning their last thirteen games.

-- NBA legend Jerry West is 72 years old, but is a 3-handicap golfer.

-- Vijay Singh holds the PGA Tour record for most wins by a golfer in his 40's-- he has won 22 times since turning 40.

-- It took 50,000 tons of asphalt to resurface the Daytona Speedway.

-- Giants' 3B Pablo Sandoval has lost 38 pounds since last season.

        ******************************

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend..........

        13) If you look at the Top 10 in last week's college basketball poll, six of them lost this week- it was the first time since 2003 the top four teams in the poll all lost in the same week.

        12) Watching Illinois play Saturday night, the team just didn't look like they enjoy playing for Bruce Weber, and Weber didn't look like he enjoys coaching them Not a good combination- I mean, they lost to a team that was starting a walk-on. Michigan State rarely starts a walk-on.

        11) 41 extra media members will be following the Oakland A's around in 2011, just because they've got Hideki Matsui; imagine being followed by 41 media members every single day? They must like baseball in Japan.

        10) 41,022 brave souls ventured outside in Calgary Sunday, watching the Flames shut Montreal out 4-0 in another outdoor NHL game, which seem to be gold mines for the league. 41,022 fans in 14-degree weather. Damn.

        9) At this time yesterday, I had never heard of 20-year old Trevor Bayne; now the kid is Daytona 500 champ-- Ted Perry points out that he isn't even old enough to rent a car yet. How does someone so young get to be such a good driver? I'm 51 and I'm not sure I can parallel park. Yikes.

        8) Young Mr Bayne went to Gibbs HS in Knoxville, same high school as Kenny Chesney, the singer. One thing Mr Bayne has to learn is that he absolutely, positively must thank sponsors on TV after winning a race.

        7) Congrats to Bucknell on winning the Patriot League regular season, but the important part is yet to come, winning the Patriot tounament. Bison now know if they get to the Patriot finals, at least they'll host the game.

        6) Maryland retired Greivis Vasquez' number 21 last night, then Terps hung on to beat NC State by 7. Maryland is squarely on the bubble.

        5) Golfer Graeme McDowell has eight career hole-in-ones. You think he might have a few more, considering how much golf these guys play.

        4) Maloof family is looking to moving the Sacramento Kings to Anaheim. Sacramento was once a great basketball town, but the constant losing in recent years has eroded the fanbase.

        3) Kevin Milwood turned down the Bronx offer of a minor league deal. so the Bombers are still short a starting pitcher or two as exhibition season gets ready to start later this week.

        2) Ratings for All-Star Saturday were up 23% over the next-best ratings in the event's 26-year history, so it figures the NBA will shut itself down in a labor dispute. Some people don't know how to deal with prosperity.

        1) I'm not a big fan of All-Star games; once I see Lebron James throw a pass off the boackboard to himself, I hit the remote and go elsewhere.

Pucking the trends: Weekly NHL betting notes
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  HOT TEAM: Phoenix Coyotes

Last year’s surprise story is back, and they appear to be even better this time around.

The Coyotes, who burst onto the playoff scene last season before losing to the Red Wings in the first round, woke up Sunday in first place of the Pacific Division - one point ahead of the equally-hot San Jose Sharks.

But Phoenix appears set for a battle the rest of the way. The Coyotes have won seven games in a row, five by one goal, and haven’t lost since Feb. 2.

And they defeated Nashville, 3-2, Saturday without the help of defenseman Ed Jovanovski, who is out with an orbital bone fracture he suffered in a 4-3 win at Atlanta Thursday.

But the Coyotes will be tested by the East elite this week. On Tuesday and Wednesday, they travel to meet the Flyers and Lightning, respectively. Might be some tough sledding ahead.

                  COLD TEAM: Colorado Avalanche

On Feb. 1, Colorado’s game with St. Louis was postponed due to weather and travel concerns. It’s one of the better things to have happened to the Avalanche all month.

Colorado, which was blanked 4-0 by San Jose Saturday night, has lost 10 consecutive games and nine outings since the postponement with the Blues.

And on most nights, the scores are quite ugly. They lost 9-1 to Calgary last Monday and have been shut out three times during this stretch.

At some point, you have to wonder about head coach Joe Sacco and just how long he might be on the bench for. Colorado woke up Sunday morning 11 points out of the final Western Conference playoff spot.

                  OVER PLAY: New York Islanders

They have goal scorers. They have some youthful jump in their legs. And all you have to do is ask the Penguins, especially after the fight night showdown on Long Island, how tough they are.

Indeed, the New York Islanders are a nice, little story these days. But what should be important to you is that they are hitting overs and hitting them frequently.

New York shut out the Kings 3-0 Saturday at the Nassau Coliseum. The surprisingly-defensive battle broke a string of seven consecutive overs for the Islanders.

In many cases, the total wasn’t even close during that stretch. In fact, the Islanders, who now have three 20-goal scorers, hit eight goals, for and against, in five of those seven games.

The Islanders are an impressive 33-24 over this season.

                  UNDER PLAY: Montreal Canadiens

Plenty of teams are scoring a lot of goals this month and overs are the February flavor, indeed. But someone forgot to tell the Canadiens, who are 2-5-2 over/under this month and will take a three-game under streak into the Heritage Classic versus Calgary Sunday.

In those last three games, the Canadiens have averaged just two goals for. And with four games in the next seven days, starting with the Flames, the legs may get a little weary in the offensive zone.

Combine that with the reliability of Carey Price in net - he of the .920 save percentage and the 2.39 goals-against average - and you have a quality under recipe, moving forward.

                  Surveying the schedule:

                  - Monitor the Sharks this week, as they may eventually run out of gas. They will have a strange road trip, where they go to Detroit Tuesday, Pittsburgh a day later and then all the way to Calgary Friday. The Sharks have already played at Boston, Washington, Columbus, New Jersey, Florida and Nashville this month. That’s some serious mileage for a California team. Hockey bettors might want to consider going against them.

                  - The Sabres, who are trying to catch the Hurricanes for the last playoff berth in the East, also have a loaded week, with four games in seven days. But, at least, they’re all at home. They’ll play Washington, Atlanta, Ottawa and Detroit. Buffalo isn’t exactly barreling into the run, though. The Sabres took just three points out of the four games leading up to the Capitals contest.

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins (+110, 5.5)

The Capitals haven’t been able to do much right lately, but beating the Penguins in the second half of the season is one of them.

In the New Year, Washington is 2-0 against the Penguins, winning both by a combined margin of 6-1. Over the past six games the Captials have just two wins, but one is a 3-0 win over the Penguins. And as simple as it sounds, when Washington can score, it wins.

The team has just three wins this season when scoring two or fewer goals. So when the team gets the red lamp to light up regularly, wins quickly follow. Washington also could be boosted by the return of Mike Green, who missed the past four games due to inner-ear trauma.

"I think it's tough to just say: 'Here's what we have to do and we'll start winning,' " Capitals defender Karl Alzner said. "We need to have a run. Our puzzle is maybe three-quarters of the way put together, and we're getting so close that we've got to just keep plugging away."

On the other bench, the Penguins continue to struggle with a slew of injuries and remain without several stars, including forward Sidney Crosby.

"You know it's a cliche, but the one-game-at-a-time approach really is the one we need to adopt," defenseman Paul Martin said. "Nobody is going to feel sorry for us, but we still control a lot of what can happen with all these games left."

They just won’t control what happens against the Capitals.

                    Pick: Washington

Chicago Blackhawks at St. Louis Blues (-110, 5.5.)

The Blues think they have a dynamic young power forward when they acquired Chris Stewart this week from Colorado. Now they just need to find a way to keep the puck out of their own net.

The team dealt top defender and captain Eric Brewer to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday and then turned around and shipped 22-year-old rising star Erik Johnson to the Colorado Avalanche as part of a package for Stewart and puck moving defender Kevin Shattenkirk.

"Sometimes you need that, to kind of inject the fresh blood and get stuff stirred up," Blues winger Brad Boyes. "(GM) Doug (Armstrong)’s been around for a long time, he's a respected GM and he knows what he's doing."

That fresh blood paid off in a 9-3 win over Anaheim that saw Stewart score twice and Shattenkirk finish plus-1 with an assist. The team may now simply try to outscore teams.

And that could work against the struggling Blackhawks.

Chicago is a mere 3-7 in its past 10 games. Over its past four games, the team is allowing an average of 4 goals per night.

"When you can't piece together consecutive wins and you're just going, one win, one loss or two wins, one loss, you're going to be in the pack every time," Chicago forward Troy Brouwer said. "You need to find ways to separate yourself and we haven't done that."

                    Pick: St. Louis

Syracuse Orange at Villanova Wildcats (-3.5, 135)

The Wildcats love to face the Syracuse 2-3 zone defense. Villanova is 4-1 SU and ATS in their past five meetings with the Orange, cracking the 80 point mark in all the victories.

Included in those wins is an 83-72 triumph at the Carrier Dome earlier this year. In the victory, Villanova was out-rebounded, but had no trouble getting any looks it wanted. The Wildcats were a white-hot 11-of-24 from beyond the arc and penetrated at will, finishing 22-of-24 at the free throw line as Syracuse committed 19 fouls to their 10.

"Zone is like playing man. Their zone is not unstoppable," said Villanova guard Corey Fisher, who had 16 points, seven assists and three rebounds in the earlier meeting. "You're going to look bad sometimes and you can look good sometimes. We're going to keep being aggressive no matter if we look good or bad. We're going to play hard."

Fisher, who is coming off a career-high 34 points at DePaul this weekend, figures to have another huge game up his sleeve against the zone. His coach plans on giving him the green light to fire away.

"We made shots," Villanova coach Jay Wright said. "You play against the zone, you make shots you've got a chance. If you're not making shots, you're in trouble."

Lucky for the Wildcats, their shots are falling.

                              Pick: Villanova

Oklahoma State Cowboys at Kansas Jayhawks (-18, 144.5)

Nothing has motivated the Jayhawks this season like a home loss to Texas. Since the team’s streak of 69 straight wins at Allen Field House was snapped, Kansas has reeled off four straight wins in the Phogg, all by an average of 22.5 points, easily covering a double-digit spread each time out.

“I think we are closer than we have ever been,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “I think we like each other a lot. I think we genuinely care for each other. I think at this point of the season, we’ve been through enough I can say we have kind of become a team. Hopefully we are not close to the team we can become, but I think we are much further along than we were three to four weeks ago.”

And if the Pokes are to pull off the upset, it will take by far their best performance on the road this season.

Oklahoma State is a horrific 2-7 on the road this season and has lost its past to away games by a combined 29 points at Texas A&M and Nebraska.

"We've got to stay positive," Cowboys coach Travis Ford said. "We've got to keep our guys' heads up and keep competing."

That won’t be enough against Kansas.

                              Pick: Kansas
