Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Toronto Maple Leafs (-184, 5.5)

There have been sassier, more star-laden matchups in this heated rivalry. But if the old cliché that says “you can throw the records away when these two teams get together” holds, the primetime audience could be in for a treat.

      Trading in Toronto

After weeks of speculation and some other trades along the way, the Maple Leafs finally pulled off the big one on Friday, sending defenseman Tomas Kaberle to Boston for prospect Joe Colborne and two draft picks.

Kaberle spent his entire career with the Maple Leafs, so this game at the Air Canada Centre versus Ottawa will certainly feel a little different for all in blue and white.

It was Toronto's third deal in nine days. The Maple Leafs also traded forward Kris Versteeg to Philadelphia for draft picks, and defenseman Francois Beauchemin to Anaheim for forward Joffrey Lupul.

So, what does this all mean, long term? Good question. But as bettors, what’s important is the now. And as we stand, the Maple Leafs are surprisingly playing pretty good hockey, despite the turnover. Toronto has won two straight and four of six.

      Trouble in net

There was a Toronto injury this week, too. Goaltender J.S. Giguere left Thursday’s 2-1 win over Buffalo with a lower-body problem. While Giguere did term the injury “minor,” it does seem like he’ll miss time.

James Reimer appears like he’ll get the start Saturday. Minor leaguer Ben Scrivens may have to be the backup, unless general manager Brian Burke can work his magic again.

Wheelin’ and dealin’ in Ottawa, too

Don’t forget the Senators, when it comes to trades. They appear to be the busiest of all as we near the deadline.

On Friday, they acquired goaltender Craig Anderson from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for their own goalie, Brian Elliott.

Anderson, 29, has some upside, but is just 13-15-3 with a 3.28 goals-against average in 33 games this season. He could start versus Toronto.

The goalie swap was the Senators' fourth deal in eight days. They sent forward Mike Fisher to Nashville last week. And on Thursday, they sent left wing Jarkko Ruutu to Anaheim and center Chris Kelly to Boston. They received draft picks back in all three trades.

Who knows, depleted bench or not, maybe this will light a spark under a team that was 1-6 this month headed into Friday’s game versus Boston.

      History

Think over with Ottawa. The lack of depth is starting to show, as it took a six-game over streak into Friday. And the stretch actually reached back to eight overs in the previous 10. As for this rivalry, it’s been pretty even with each team winning two. Interesting note: In both of Toronto’s wins, the score was 5-1.

Dallas Stars at Vancouver Canucks (-195, 5.5)

The nightcap features teams headed in different directions. Vancouver is steady as she goes, still winning games, still scoring goals and still putting distance between itself and the West. Dallas, on the other hand, is running out of gas.

      Injury concerns

It hasn’t been all positive for the Canucks. They have had injuries along the back line. Defenseman Kevin Bieksa suffered a small break in his left foot this week vs. Minnesota. He is out indefinitely.

He joins a crowded defensive crew that includes Andrew Alberts, who is out up to two months with a broken wrist, and Alex Edler, out at least six more weeks following back surgery.

The shorthandedness hasn’t showed. Vancouver is 7-3 this month and is barreling toward the No. 1 seed in the West. If bettors can handle the price, the Canucks are easily still one of the best bets in the league.

      Falling Stars

Dallas had such a great start and then acquired what it thought was some missing grit up front, in Jamie Langenbrunner. A return to the glory days of 1999-2000 seemed logical.

      Then February happened.

Dallas is just 1-7 this month, has lost three in a row and hasn’t topped two goals in seven of its last 10 games.

Langenbrunner has been a bust, scoring just two goals in 16 games. And now, they have to face Vancouver on “Hockey Night in Canada?” Look out.

      History

Perhaps Vancouver’s injury situation on the back line has created a stronger sense of defense up front. Whatever the case is, they have tightened up.

After an impressive run of five straight overs, the Canucks have now rolled up three straight unders, concluding with a 3-1 loss in Nashville Thursday. As for the series with the Stars, think Vancouver and the under. The Canucks have won all three matchups with ease, with only one contest going over.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Avalanche at San Jose Sharks (-230, 5.5)

The Avalanche had a huge goaltending issue the team decided to rectify before the trade deadline. Too bad, the team likely got worse between the pipes.

Colorado swapped starter Craig Anderson to Ottawa on Friday for goalie Brian Elliott. Anderson is having a horrid year, but was a fringe candidate for MVP last season and pretty much singlehandedly put the team into the postseason before suffering a myriad of injuries this year.

Elliott, meantime, is a horrid 1-11-5 in his past 17 starts. He has given up at least three goals over his past four starts and seven of his past eight. Also, Elliott won’t be able to play next week due to visa issues, meaning tire fire Peter Budaj will get the nod.
Over his past three games, Budaj has given up 12 goals and was actually pulled twice in a 9-1 loss to Calgary.

"I think for both parties, it was the right move," Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said after Colorado's practice this morning at Family Sports Center. "Craig gets a fresh start there and Brian gets a fresh start here."

On the other bench, the Sharks have won six of their past eight, including their two most recent games, a 3-2 win over Washington and a 2-1 win over Nashville.

        Pick: San Jose

Dallas Stars at Vancouver Canucks (-195, 5.5)

It doesn’t matter that the Canucks are starting three rookies on the blueline – the Stars simply can’t score.

Vancouver will likely have first-year skaters Evan Oberg, Chris Tanev and Yann Sauve manning the rearguard against the Dallas stars when the teams faceoff. However, the rash of injuries that have forced 13 different defenders to dress for the team this season have done little to effect the team’s stingy spirit.

The Canucks lead the league in goals-against average, coughing up an average of just 2.3 goals per game.

And it’s not like Dallas can score without Brad Richards. By far the team’s leading scorer, Richards has missed the past two games with an undisclosed upper body injury, the first time he has missed the ice this season.

As a result, the team has been forced to unsuccessfully juggle its lines. Over the past two games, the team has dropped matchups with lowly Edmonton and surging Calgary by a combined score of 8-3.

“There’s never good timing for injuries, but because the games are so demanding right now, the games are going to be intense and injuries are part of the game,” Dallas coach Marc Crawford said. “We know we have to play a dig-in type of game and we’re going to have to get great performances from players who don’t generally get great opportunities to play.”

        Pick: Vancouver
