Detroit Red Wings at Tampa Bay Lightning (-115, 5.5)
THE STORY: Steve Yzerman made a myriad of moves in his new role as the general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Considering that the Lightning rest atop the Southeast Division, one might say he's done fairly well.
Yzerman's previous job was in the Detroit Red Wings' front office alongside general manager Ken Holland. On Thursday, Yzerman's former team will pay a visit to his current one when the Red Wings invade the St. Pete Times Forum to take on the Lightning.
The Central Division-leading Red Wings have won three of their last four games following a home-and-home sweep of the Boston Bruins last weekend, while the Lightning are 8-2-1 in their last 11 games.
TV: 7:30 ET, FSD, SUN.
ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (34-17-6): Tampa Bay was unsuccessful in its bid for a regular-season sweep of the Eastern Conference-leading Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday. The Lightning dropped a 4-3 shootout loss to the Flyers. Dwayne Roloson (9-5-1, 2.64 goals-against average) has won his last two starts against the Red Wings, but boasts a 9-16-1 mark with three ties against the Hockeytown residents. Overall, the 41-year-old netminder has dropped three of his last four starts following a five-game winning streak.
ABOUT THE RED WINGS (34-16-6): Detroit has won nine of its last 13 away from Joe Louis Arena. All told, the Red Wings are 17-8-2 on road this season. Jimmy Howard (28-10-3, 2.82 goals-against average) is leading the NHL in wins after securing victories in five of his last seven contests. The 26-year-old New York native recorded a shutout in his lone career start against the Lightning.
WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Reigning Selke Trophy winner Pavel Datsyuk has collected five points in four games since returning from a wrist injury. Tampa Bay captain Vincent Lecavalier has four goals in as many games and seven points in his last six contests.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Tampa Bay has converted an NHL fifth-best 20.8 percent of its power plays, while killing off 83.6 percent of its opponents' chances. For its part, Detroit has scored on 20.6 percent of its opportunities with the man advantage, while killing off 81.1 percent of its shorthanded situations.
SEASON SERIES: Thursday's contest is the first of the season between the clubs. Detroit has five wins and a tie in its last six games against Tampa Bay. The Red Wings posted a 3-0 triumph on Dec. 17, 2009 in the teams' last meeting.
KEY INJURIES: DETROIT: D Brad Stuart (jaw); G Chris Osgood (groin); C Valtteri Filppula (knee); C Mike Modano (wrist). TAMPA BAY: C Nate Thompson (head); D Matt Smaby (illness); LW Ryan Malone (abdominal); D Mike Lundin (abdominal).
LAST WORD: After missing his team's last 15 games, Stuart has been cleared to play in Thursday's contest. Stuart has been sidelined since being leveled by a blindside hit from Tom Kostopoulos of the Calgary Flames on Jan. 7.
TRENDS:
Tampa Bay is 8-3 in its last 11 games but just 2-3 in its last five contests.
Detroit is 4-0 in its last four games against the Lightning dating back to 2005.
The under is 6-3 in the Wings' last nine games but 0-5 in Tampa Bay's last five matchups.
