I love VCA this evening....there was a reverse line move on the game.......take VCU -1....

Struggling Hornets try to get back on track vs. Warriors

        NEW ORLEANS HORNETS (33-23)

        at GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS (24-29)

        Tip-off: Tuesday, 10:30 p.m. EDT
Line: Golden State -2.5, Total: 201.5

The NBA’s streakiest team, the Hornets, will have their work cut out for them as they travel to face a Warriors team that’s surprisingly tough to beat at home.

New Orleans’ roller coaster season is on a downturn again. After winning 10 in a row SU and seven of 10 ATS from Jan. 9-26, New Orleans has dropped seven of nine SU and eight of nine ATS since then, including road losses to Sacramento and New Jersey, as well as a brutal 12-point home loss to Minnesota.

During this latest slump, the Hornets aren’t getting it done on either end of the court. Offensively, they’re scoring just 95.9 PPG and shooting 44.7% from the field. Stars Chris Paul (46.0% from the field) and David West (45.9%) have been a little bit off, but it’s been Marco Belinelli (34.3%) and Trevor Ariza (6-24 FG, 1-10 three-pt FG in two games since returning from an ankle injury). The three games Ariza missed, combined with the absence of top interior defender Emeka Okafor, has hurt them defensively. Opponents are shooting 47.9% from the field against New Orleans over that nine-game stretch.

An evening with Golden State’s sieve defenders might be just what Paul needs. In two meetings with the Warriors this year, he’s averaging 21.0 PPG on 61.9% shooting and 15.0 APG. On Jan. 26, just before the start of their most recent slide, the Hornets jumped out to a 34-21 over the Warriors in Oakland before cruising to a 112-103 victory.

For the most part, the Warriors haven’t been an easy out at home. They’re 18-11 SU in Oakland this season, including five wins in their past six. In February alone, they’ve scored home wins over Oklahoma City, Denver and Chicago. Their home success (or is it their road struggles?) have been due to some crazy home-road splits from leading scorer Monta Ellis. The star combo guard is averaging 28.7 PPG on 49% FG and 42% on threes in Oakland, but just 21.1 PPG on 42% FG and 30% shooting from three on the road. Golden State as a team is averaging 106.2 PPG at home but just 98.8 PPG on the road.

Because of their strong play at home and the Hornets’ recent struggles, I’m going with Golden State. The FoxSheets have some stats that lean the same way, including this highly-rated one:

Play Against - Underdogs (NEW ORLEANS) - good shooting team (45.5-47.5%) against a poor defensive team (45.5-47.5%), good ball handling team (<=14.5 TO) vs. an average pressure defense (14.5-16.5 TO) after 42+ games. (54-22 over the last 5 seasons, 71.1%, +29.8 units. Rating = 3*).

I also like the Under in this one, thanks to this four-star tidbit from the FoxSheets:

NEW ORLEANS is 17-3 UNDER (85.0%, +13.7 Units) after failing to cover 2 of their last 3 against the spread this season. The average score was NEW ORLEANS 90.4, OPPONENT 87.6 - (Rating = 4*).

OSU favored by double digits over Michigan St.

MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS (14-10, 6-6 in Big Ten)

at OHIO STATE BUCKEYES (24-1, 11-1 in Big Ten)

          Tip-off: Tuesday, 9:00 p.m. EDT
Line: Ohio State -12.5, Total: 136.5

This was far from being a lovely Valentine’s weekend for Thad Matta and his Ohio State Buckeyes. First they traveled to Madison, WI to play their toughest road game of the season and lost to the Wisconsin Badgers, 71-67, after blowing a 15-point, second-half lead. On Valentine’s Day when the new rankings came out, Ohio State had fallen from its number one slot. Less catastrophic, yet still distracting, sort of, was the issue of what happened immediately after the loss to Wisconsin, where Buckeyes star center Jared Sullinger claimed on his Twitter account that a Badger fan spit on him amidst the celebratory avalanche of fans that rushed the court. Now that the pursuit of perfection is over, the job of pursuing a national championship begins anew. Tuesday night the bruised No. 2 Buckeyes will re-focus themselves on facing Tom Izzo’s Michigan State Spartans, who know a thing or two about reaching Final Fours.

This is usually the time of year when fans of Big Ten basketball expect the Spartans to hit that mid-February switch and make that push that will carry them through the tournament and possibly a Final Four. The Spartans are in need of a push, but this time, they need that push just to get them into the NCAAs. Michigan State (14-10, 6-6) has lost five of its past seven games, and some of the words being used to describe the team’s performance are new to the Spartans lexicon. After a 72-52 defeat at Iowa on February 2, Izzo said "That was the worst performance of a team that I've coached since I've been at Michigan State." Junior forward Draymond Green (13.3 PPG, 8.5 RPG) described the feeling after the game as "Rock bottom.”

The Spartans have dropped five straight road games by an average margin of defeat of 13.8 PPG. Lost within those numbers, the fact that those games were lost by 4, 9, 10, 20 and 26 points in that order. Translation, this team is getting worse on the road, not better. Now they must go into Value City Arena, where the Buckeyes are undefeated this season. Michigan State is hoping that the momentum of Thursday’s 75-57 victory over Penn State will carry over into its date in Columbus. In that game, Draymond Green became the third Spartan player to register a triple-double by tallying 15 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. That 10th assist might have been costly as Delvon Roe was fouled hard on the basket and limped off the court. Top scorer Kalin Lucas (16.2 PPG) added 24 points in the win. MSU lost to Ohio State in East Lansing last season, but took two out of three from the Buckeyes in 2009, including a 78-67 victory in its last visit to Columbus. Izzo wants to see his team answer the challenge. "It's a great opportunity and that's what I'm trying to sell to the guys. We've got a great opportunity to re-establish ourselves."

In many ways the Buckeyes were victimized by a taste of their own medicine in the Wisconsin loss, as the Badgers used a blistering 50% day from three-point range (12-of-24) to outscore the Ohio State from beyond the arc, 36-9. William Buford led the Buckeyes with 21 points, and Sullinger added 19 points and 13 boards, but collectively they were no match for a Badger squad that used a 15-0 second half run, keyed by Jordan Taylor’s eight straight points to ignite the comeback. Matta will now turn to his seniors like Jon Diebler to get the team re-committed to the bigger task of this season: winning a Big Ten title, and then winning a bigger title down the road. "We didn't come into the season trying to go undefeated. Obviously, it would have been nice. But we're still two games up on second place in the Big Ten. And that's our first goal -- to win the Big Ten," Diebler said, adding "Yes, we lost. Yes, it's not acceptable to lose. But it's not the end of the world. We still have six games left and we're sitting in a pretty good position right now."

Although Michigan State is one of the worst bets in the nation (7-16 ATS overall, 3-9 ATS on road, 3-9 ATS vs. Big Ten), the Buckeyes are just 6-7 ATS at home despite their 16-0 SU home mark. OSU is also 5-7 ATS in Big Ten play, outscoring conference opponents by only 8.5 PPG, which is well short of the spread it has to cover on Tuesday night. Michigan State is the pick here to cover the spread and this highly-rated FoxSheets trend also sides with the Spartans to cover.

Play On - An underdog (MICHIGAN STATE) - after being beaten by the spread by 48 or more points total in their last ten games against opponent after going over the total by more than 12 points in two consecutive games. (25-5 since 1997.) (83.3%, +19.5 units. Rating = 3*).

This four-star FoxSheets coaching trend for expects Tuesday’s game to finish Under the total.

Thad Matta is 11-1 UNDER (+9.9 Units) in home games after 2 or more consecutive overs as the coach of OHIO STATE. The average score was OHIO STATE 71.0, OPPONENT 56.7 - (Rating = 4*).
