    Daily Sports Roundup: February 14

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Flames look for a win over the Avalanche, the Orange play host to the Mountaineers, and the Spurs travel east to battle with the Nets.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has six games on tap for Valentine's Day, with the Lakers at Charlotte, Atlanta at Detroit, the Clippers at Milwaukee, Portland at Minnesota, Denver at Houston, and San Antonio at New Jersey. The Spurs (45-9 SU, 33-19-2 ATS) beat the Wizards 118-94 in Washington in their last game on Saturday, with Tony Parker and George Hill each scoring 18 points in that contest for San Antonio. DeJuan Blair picked up 13 points and 12 rebounds that night for the Spurs. The Nets (17-38 SU, 26-29 ATS) are coming off a 105-95 loss at home to New York in their last game on Saturday. Devin Harris led the way with 22 points for New Jersey in that defeat, while Brook Lopez tossed in 19 points.

No. 2 Kansas plays on the road against Kansas State in Top-25 action around college basketball on Monday, while No. 25 West Virginia is at No. 12 Syracuse. The Mountaineers (16-8 SU, 8-12 ATS) beat DePaul 82-71 last time out; John Flowers tossed in 15 points for West Virginia in that win. The Orange (20-6 SU, 7-15 ATS) have lost two straight games, falling 73-69 at Louisville last time out despite 21 points from Brandon Tiche. Those teams last met back in January '10, with Syracuse winning 72-71.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are just three games on the NHL's schedule for Monday, with Washington at Phoenix, Vancouver at St. Louis, and Calgary at Colorado. The Flames fell to 28-22-8 on the season with a 4-2 loss in Vancouver in their last game on Saturday night; Tim Jackman and Curtis Glencross scored for Calgary in that contest, while Miikka Kiprusoff made 29 saves. The Avalanche have lost seven games in a row and sit at 25-25-6 on the season after falling 5-3 in Nashville on Saturday. Peter Forsberg made his return to the NHL for Colorado in that Saturday defeat, but failed to record a point in 17 minutes of action. Calgary is 2-1 against Colorado through their three meetings so far this year.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Injury to remember

Josh Selby, Kansas Jayhawks: Kansas isn’t expected to have its freshman guard who is putting up 12 points per game ready to go for Monday’s tilt with Kansas State. Selby’s dealing with a stress reaction in his right ankle, but he has been able to practice lightly over the past few days so he’s getting close. Kansas, which is listed as a 4-point road favorite, is officially listing him as questionable, while power forward Thomas Robinson is out until early next month with a knee injury.

      Key trends

NBA: The Los Angeles Lakers have covered just once over their last 11 meetings with the Charlotte Bobcats.

NBA: San Antonio is riding an 8-2 run against the spread heading into Monday’s game against the New Jersey Nets.

NBA: Detroit has played over the total in 20 of its last 27 home games.

NBA: Minnesota has won twice over the last seven games, covering just twice over that span. .

NHL: Vancouver has won 12 of its last 16 road games and has 12 of its last 17 meetings with the St. Louis Blues. The Canucks are set as -135 favorites at St. Louis on Monday.

NCAAB: Syracuse has covered in five of its last six meetings with West Virginia, but has dropped six of its last eight against the number overall.

NCAAB: Kansas State is 3-11 ATS in its last 14 games. The Wildcats host the Kansas Jayhawks Monday night.

      Number of note

2.7 – The Washington Capitals are averaging 2.7 goals per game this season after changing to a more defensive system, down from their league-best 3.82 goals per game last season. As a result, the Caps have played under the total 40 times already this season, easily the most in the NHL.

      Notes and tips

Charlotte’s D.J. Augustin will continue to hold down his starting point guard role Monday against the Lakers, but coach Paul Silas has had just about enough of Augustin’s slump. Silas limited him to only 18 minutes on Saturday night and Shaun Livingston started in the second half of a 88-86 win over Atlanta. Augustin has scored just eight combined points over the last two games. Charlotte is pegged as an early 5-point underdog against the Lakers.

Colorado Avalanche goaltender Craig Anderson is expected to return to the team Monday after missing the last two games to deal with personal issues. Anderson is struggling through a tough year and has split time with Peter Budaj between the pipes for much of this season. The team has yet to name a starting goaltender for its game against the Calgary Flames on Monday, but the Avalanche can use all hands on deck at this point. Colorado has dropped seven straight games and sits as a -120 favorite against the Flames.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin called a players-only meeting following Saturday’s loss to the Los Angeles Kings. Bruce Boudreau was planning on addressing the team, but Ovechkin decided to take the reins. "We're coming to a key point in the season, I'm sure we're all aware of that," veteran Mike Knuble told reporters. "It's time to start throwing the switch toward playoffs. We've got to be playing well. We're just kind of sloughing our way. It's like we're waiting for something to happen. . . . We're entering the toughest part of our season and it's going to be a real indicator if we're a serious contender or not, quite honestly." The Caps kick off a five-game road swing Monday at Phoenix and are set as -105 underdogs.

        Monday's six-pack

-- Not only did DA Points win his first PGA Tour event yesterday at Pebble Beach, he won the pro-am with the great comedian Bill Murray.

-- Murray's son Luke is an assistant basketball coach at Wagner in NYC, where he works with the Hurley brothers.

-- Alvaro Quiros won the European Tour event in Dubai; he had both a hole-in-one and a triple bogey in the final round.

-- 5-21 Manhattan beat Siena; underdog is now 14-1 vs spread in Siena's conference games. Saints are 0-9 against spread as MAAC favorite.

-- TCU is headed to Big East soon; in six years in MWC, Horned Frogs are 32-68 in basketball. They're going to get killed in the Big East.

-- Cavaliers couldn't stand prosperity, following up their first win in 55 days with a home loss to Wizard team that had been 0-25 on the road.

        *******************************

Weekend List of 13: Wrapping up a college hoop Saturday......

        13) Can a kid who scored one point in a game be the Player of the Game? Milwaukee's Kaylon Williams had 14 assists, 12 rebounds, two steals in his team's 70-59 win at UIC Saturday, and he was responsible for getting ball over halfcourt against the Flames' full-court pressure. Williams only scored one point (0-8 from floor) but he was an indispensable player.

        12) Then there is Norris Cole of Cleveland State, who scored 41 points, had 20 rebounds and nine assists in Vikings' 86-76 win over Youngstown State. Cole is just second D-I player in last 15 years (Blake Griffin) to do the 40-20 thing. Oh by the way, Cole is 6-foot-2.

        11) Towson State (0-14 in CAA) had a 22-point lead vs NC-Wilmington in second half, but snatched defeat from jaws of victory and lost 95-93 in OT to the Seahawks. How can a school in a fairly large city (Baltimore) have such a bad team?

        10) Very bad omen for Utah Jazz: they were outscored 51-27 in second half Friday night, the first game of the post-Jerry Sloan era. At home.

        9) Louisville has now beaten Syracuse seven games in a row.

        8) In two losses to San Diego State this season, UNLV was 2-32 behind the arc; 2 for freakin' 32, and they only lost by six points both games.

        7) Central Florida started the season 14-0, then lost its next eight games, before snapping the skid with a 58-57 win over Tulsa last night. Knights were favored in five of the eight losses.

        6) Harvard was down 53-31 at halftime to Brown, at home, then won by 7, outscoring Bruins 54-25 on second half. The Ivy League is weird, with games on back/back nights and visiting teams riding buses.

        5) Georgia led South Carolina 28-9 Saturday. At halftime. On the road.

Gamecocks then scored 47 points in second half, but lost 60-56, to Dawg team that is as improved as any team in the country.

        4) Eldrick Woods shot a 75 overnight over in Dubai, finished T20, hitting his ball into the water on 18th hole. At some point, the question has to be raised: Will Eldrick ever win again?

        3) Great sequence late Saturday, when Kansas St/Villanova both hit long, dramatic, game-altering jumpers that both came just after the buzzer. The two shots had to come in the same minute, on ESPN/ESPNU. Bad night to be a Wildcat, I guess, but it was excellent TV, for sure. K-State's shot proved the value of the replay system; it was originally called good.

        2) Why can't Ohio State still be #1? Personally, I'd vote Texas #1, on the strength of their win at Kansas, but where is it written that there has to be a new #1 team, just because the old #1 lost? It doesn't make sense.

        1) Buckeyes were the last D-I team to lose; in last four seasons, only once has the last team to lose made the Final Four, and that team didn't win the championship. Its how you play from here on in that matters most.
