    Daily Sports Roundup: February 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Lakers head to Madison Square Garden to battle with the Knicks, the Stars play the Blackhawks, and Princeton takes on Columbia.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Ten games make up the NBA's schedule for Friday, with New Jersey at Charlotte, Portland at Toronto, San Antonio at Philadelphia, New Orleans at Orlando, Minnesota at Indiana, Miami at Detroit, the Clippers at Cleveland, Milwaukee at Memphis, Phoenix at Utah, and the Lakers at New York. Kobe Bryant and company blasted the Knicks 109-87 as a 6.5-point home favorite when the teams last met on January 9. Bryant was good for 27 points and 10 boards in that victory, while Pau Gasol chipped in with 20 points and 14 rebounds and Andrew Bynum had 18 points. Amare Stoudemire led the way on offense for the Knicks with 23 points, and Wilson Chandler tossed in 19 points.

Ivy League action once again highlights the college basketball schedule for Friday, with Brown at Dartmouth, Pennsylvania at Cornell, Yale at Harvard, and Princeton at Columbia. The Tigers (17-4 SU, 8-5 ATS) have won seven straight games, getting past Pennsylvania 62-59 in overtime last time out; Dan Mavraides had 11 points and five boards for Princeton that day. The Lions (12-8 SU, 4-3 ATS) are riding a two-game losing streak, falling 72-67 at Yale last game despite 19 points from Brian Barbour. Princeton and Columbia last met back in February 2010, with the Tigers winning 67-52.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are eight games on the NHL's Friday slate, with Detroit at Boston, San Jose at New Jersey, Pittsburgh at the Islanders, Colorado at Columbus, the Rangers at Atlanta, Minnesota at St. Louis, Anaheim at Calgary, and Chicago at Dallas. The Hawks and Stars most recently met on January 5 in Chicago, with the road team pulling out a 4-2 win in that OVER result. Mike Ribeiro led the way with two goals for Dallas in that night's victory, while Steve Ott and Brenden Morrow had a single marker apiece. Kari Lehtonen stopped 35 of 37 Chicago shots in that win. Tomas Kopecky and Fernando Pisani each scored in the loss. The OVER sits at 9-1 in these teams' last 10 matchups.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

      Line to watch

Miami Heat at Detroit Pistons (+7.5, 191.5)

Early sharp money jumped on the home side, taking the Pistons down from +8 to +7.5. The public will have its say with one of the East’s top teams facing one of the conference’s worst and widen the spread before tipoff.

      Who’s hot?

San Jose Sharks – The Sharks have won five games in a row and are 9-0-1 in their last 10 games. San Jose is on the road Friday, visiting the New Jersey Devils as a -125 favorite.

      Who’s not?

Cleveland Cavaliers – By now bettors are very familiar with the Cavaliers’ 26-game losing streak. But they might not have looked at Cleveland’s recent efforts. It seems all those losses are giving the Cavs some extra points on the spread, which the team is making the most of, going 3-1-1 ATS in the past five outings. Cleveland hosts the Los Angeles Clippers as a 3.5-point underdog Friday.

      Injury to watch

Michael Beasley, Minnesota Timberwolves – The talented forward is nursing a sore ankle and was limited at practice Thursday, making him a question mark against the Indiana Pacers Friday night. The T-Wolves have a shot at a legit winning streak versus the Pacers, having won and covered in back-to-back outings. Beasley missed Wednesday win over the Houston Rockets and was replaced by Corey Brewer in the starting five.

      Key stat

6 – The Los Angeles Lakers had six players score in double figures the last time they came to Madison Square Garden. Los Angeles topped the New York Knicks 115-105 as a 5.5-point road favorite on January 22, 2010. Kobe Bryant led the charge with 27 points in that game.

      Game of the Day

Detroit Red Wings at Boston Bruins (-138, 5.5)

      Notable quotable

"That's not true. I would never force coach Sloan out of Utah. He's meant more to this town and organization than I have by far. It's not my place." - Utah Jazz point guard Deron Williams on the resignation of head coach Jerry Sloan, one day after he and Sloan had a heated argument Wednesday night. Utah takes on the Phoenix Suns with interim head coach Ty Corbin at the wheel Friday.

      Tips and notes

-- The Tampa Bay Lightning are licking their wounds after a 7-4 loss to the Buffalo Sabres earlier this week. Tampa Bay could be without four key players when they take on the Carolina Hurricanes Saturday. Defenseman Mike Lundin is out with an abdominal strain, center Nate Thompson is nursing a concussion, winger Ryan Malone could be out until the postseason with a muscle strain and defenseman Matt Smaby is fighting through a knee injury.

      - New York Knicks head coach Mike D’Antoni let his team have it after their loss to the Los Angeles Clippers Wednesday. The 116-108 defeat was New York’s fourth loss in the past six games, dropping the team to 3-3 ATS in that span. The Knicks trailed the Clippers by as many as 20 points, cutting the lead to three points late in the fourth quarter.

"The effort's not good enough," D'Antoni told reporters after the game. "There's times you lay an egg, but it should never be because we don't have the necessary heart or desire to do it. That was a total lack of commitment to beat a team that's talented."

New York hosts the Los Angeles Lakers Friday night.

      - The Tennessee Chattanooga Mocs will play Western Carolina Friday night instead of Monday, after moving Thursday’s original game due to a flu outbreak. The Mocs have only five healthy players on the roster, which has been depleted due to illness, injury and the suspension of forward Chris Early. Chattanooga, which is 14-11 at the top of the Southern North standings and 9-12 ATS, will then turn around and play Appalachian State Saturday. Western Carolina also plays on short rest, facing Samford this weekend.

        Friday's six-pack

-- St John's trailed UConn 31-29 at one point, but squashed the Huskies in the second half of a surprisingly easy 89-72 win. The Hardy kid on St John's is developing into a damn good player.

-- If you live in upstate NY and want to make some money, I suggest you bring a Steak 'n Shake franchise to Albany. Great place to eat.

-- Ray Allen broke Reggie Miller's record for most 3-pointers made in a career. Celtics lost 92-86 to the Lakers, as Kobe Bryant scored 20 of his 23 points in the second half.

-- Illinois benched starters McCamey/Tisdale, then won at Minnesota in a game they really needed. Gophers have lost four games in a row.

-- Aaron Afflalo hit a dramatic shot as Denver rallied to beat Dallas at home, second straight night Nuggets played a nailbiter. You watch the body language of Carmelo Anthony; he seems to like his teammates and he wants to win- I'm thinking its still possible he stays in Denver.

-- Ohio State is 0-5 at Wisconsin since Bo Ryan has been Badgers' head coach, so undefeated Buckeyes have a tough game on Saturday.

        ****************************

Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here..........

        13) Disappointing to see Jerry Sloan walk away from the Utah Jazz, which had been an island if sanity in pro sports, keeping the same coach for 20+ years, even though they had never won a championship. Sloan was a tough player and a very good coach.

        12) How in God’s name have Sam Bradford and Josh McDaniels not met yet? What are they waiting for? As of March 4, players/coaches won’t be allowed to meet because of the lockout. You’d think McDaniels would want to get with his star QB as quickly as possible….you’d think.

        11) Speaking of the Rams, wonder who is calling shots for the Nuggets in the MeloDrama, Stan or Josh Kroenke? Father Stan ceded ownership of the Nuggets to son Josh when he took over ownership of the Rams last summer, but now you here Stan is the one negotiating with the Knicks in the Carmelo fiasco. Will be interesting to see how all this turns out.

        10) Nuggets lost by a hoop in Oakland Wednesday; they had ball to tie game at end, but Carmelo Anthony never touched the ball, as Josh Smith passed to Nene for a baseline jumper, which missed. Carmelo tossed his headband after the buzzer, not sure if it was because they lost or because he didn’t get the ball.

        9) Memphis Grizzlies are 16-3 vs spread in their last 19 games as a road underdog; Toronto Raptors covered once in last ten games as a dog. Lakers have been a home favorite of less than 6 points five times, and lost four of the five games.

        8) Carson Palmer put his house in Cincinnati up for sale, meaning: a) He wants a nicer house in Cincinnati or b) (more likely) He wants away from the Bengals, their cheapskate owner and Chad85Johnson. Considering that the backup QB in Cincy is Palmer’s little brother, this is no small crisis for Bengal GM Mike Brown.

        7) Former Michigan QB Tate Forcier has transferred to Miami, FL; he’ll have two years left to play, starting in 2012.

        6) Glad to see Felix Hernandez likes Seattle; he is one of the few Mariners to live there in the offseason. M’s just signed his brother to a minor league contract. Hopefully when the times comes, he’ll stay with Seattle instead of chasing the money, like most everyone else does.

        5) The Navy flyover (over a domed stadium) before the Super Bowl cost us taxpayers $450,000; Navy people call it training/recruitment expenses, which seems fair, to a degree, since its televised to millions of people, but $450,000 is still an awful lot of money.

        4) Jered Weaver “lost” his arbitration case to the Angels, but still pockets a raise of $3.1M. Doesn’t exactly seem like a loss.

        3) Roof at the Metrodome is going to be fixed, but it might not get done until August 1: Vikings will play preseason games at U of Minnesota if the Metrodome isn't good to go by then. Luckily for the Twins, they've got their new outdoor stadium; otherwise they would've had issues with where to play their home games this season.

        2) TV coverage of the NCAA tournament sounds like it will be better under this new contract, with every game on free TV, spread out over four channels. They’re not going to have the dead period from 5-7 anymore on the first two days, games will be spread out thru the whole day, which sounds good. As always, looking forward to March Madness.

        1) There were 245 coaching changes in the NBA during Jerry Sloan's stint as Utah's head coach; the Clippers alone had 13 different head coaches.
