Duke hosts UNC in battle for first place in ACC

NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS (17-5, 7-1 in ACC)

at DUKE BLUE DEVILS (21-2, 8-1 in ACC)

      Tip-off: Wednesday, 9:00 p.m. EDT
      Line: Duke -10, Total: 154

No. 20 North Carolina thinks it has turned a corner, and Wednesday the Tar Heels have a chance to prove it when they visit rival No. 5 Duke for their toughest game of the year.

The Heels have been on fire of late, especially since the benching (and eventually departure) of struggling starting point guard Larry Drew II. Since freshman Kendall Marshall took over at the point on Jan. 18, UNC is 5-0 SU and ATS, outscoring opponents by an average of 17.0 PPG. Their only competitive game was a 74-71 win at Miami. They handled conference contenders Clemson (10-point win) and Florida State (20-point win) at home, while scoring a 32-point blowout of Boston College in their last road game.

Harrison Barnes and John Henson, in particular, have seen their games flourish with Drew out of the picture. The pair were expected to be All-America candidates, with Barnes becoming the first freshman ever named pre-season All-America. After averaging 11.7 PPG on 37.0% shooting through 17 games alongside Drew, he’s averaging 18.8 PPG on 51.5% shooting in five games since. Henson was averaging 10.4 PPG, 8.2 RPG and, despite being a fine passing big man, just 0.6 APG with Drew as the starter. Now getting the ball in better spots in the high post, he’s averaging 13.4 PPG, 9.6 RPG and 1.4 APG sans Drew.

Duke, meanwhile, hasn’t lost a home game SU in nearly two years. On Feb. 11, 2009 they lost 101-87 to a Carolina team that featured five players who are now in the NBA. The Blue Devils humiliated the Heels at Cameron Indoor last March, jumping ahead by 27 at halftime before cruising to an 82-50 victory. Kyle Singler scored a game-high 25 that night while Nolan Smith added 20 and five assists.

While Duke is still firmly planted among the nation’s elite, they’re not quite the team they were before super freshman point guard Kyrie Irving went down with a toe injury in December. Since then Duke is 13-2 SU, but just 8-7 ATS. The Blue Devils have lost three of four and five of seven ATS at home. Their offense has been left in the hands of Smith, who has run hot and cold, especially with his outside shooting.

Still, most of Smith’s off nights have come on the road. He’s usually perfectly comfortable in Cameron. He’s shooting 49.7% from the field at home and just 42.9% on the road this season. This will be Barnes’ first trip to Durham, and while the Cameron Crazies will be a non-factor, the heat and humidity inside that gym, as well as the unique sight lines and backgrounds for shooters (opponents are shooting 43.5% from three against Duke away from Durham, but just 31.3% at Cameron) will conspire against the freshman. Although UNC is 10-3 ATS in its past 13 trips to Durham, I like Duke to win comfortably Wednesday night. The FoxSheets give two more reasons to support the Blue Devils.

Play On - Home teams as a favorite or pick (DUKE) - after a win by 10 points or more against opponent after 3 straight wins by 15 points or more. (74-38 since 1997.) (66.1%, +32.2 units. Rating = 2*).

DUKE is 40-17 ATS (70.2%, +21.3 Units) in home games after scoring 45 points or more in the first half last game since 1997. The average score was DUKE 91.0, OPPONENT 63.0 - (Rating = 2*).

UNC has played five straight games Over total, but this The FoxSheets trend leans towards the Under.

NORTH CAROLINA is 19-7 UNDER (73.1%, +11.3 Units) versus good shooting teams - making >=45% of their shots over the last 2 seasons. The average score was NORTH CAROLINA 73.3, OPPONENT 72.0 - (Rating = 2*).
