Bettor's best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

Line to keep an eye on

San Jose Sharks at Washington Capitals (-140, 5.5) – Washington may be welcoming back sniper Alexander Semin, who has been out since Jan. 8. He may be coming back at the right time, as stars Alexander Oveckin and Nicklas Backstrom are waking up and the Capitals’ offense is starting to score goals again. Semin has 35 points in 39 games and could provide even more of a spark to the Capitals offense.

    Who’s hot?

NHL: The New Jersey Devils are 7-1 in their last eight games against Eastern Conference foes.

NBA: The Memphis Grizzlies are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games against teams with a winning percentage better than .600.

NCAAB: The under is 9-2 in San Diego State’s last 11 games.

    Who’s not?

NHL: The New York Islanders are 1-4 in their last five home games.

NBA: The Miami Heat are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 games on a Tuesday.

NCAAB: The Xavier Musketeers are 0-7-1 ATS in their last eight non-conference games.

    Injury not to be overlooked

Martin Brodeur – Brodeur may not be putting up the dominating numbers that the sure-fire Hall-of-Famer has produced in the past, nor has he dominated the playing time in the New Jersey net, but he is still the team’s No. 1 goalie and his absence will be problematic for the Devils’ (slim) playoff push. Brodeur hurt his knee in Saturday’s win over Montreal, leaving Johan Hedberg to man the crease while Brodeur recovers. New Jersey has won nine of its last 12 contests, with Brodeur going 8-1-1 in that stretch.

    Key stat

2 – The number of assists by Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron in his first NHL game this season. Bergeron was signed last month and spent time in the AHL getting into shape following offseason knee surgery. Tampa Bay has only one defenseman with more than two power-play points and Bergeron is known as a power-play specialist. One of his two assists in Sunday’s win came on the power play and he also logged 5:42 of ice time with the man advantage. Bergeron’s presence could provide a massive boost to an already-potent Tampa Bay Lightning offense, which hosts Buffalo on Tuesday with the total at 5.5.

    Game of the day
San Jose Sharks at Washington Capitals (-140, 5.5)

    Notable quotable

“I’m nervous how it’s going to go. I’m not really sure if I’m going to be good or bad. I’m going to be very nervous for the first game, so I wish it could come right away.” – Colorado Avalanche center Peter Forsberg, on the anticipation of playing his first NHL game in three years.

    Tips and notes

-- St. Louis Blues forward Andy McDonald returned from a 24-game absence Friday night and logged an assist and was plus-2 in a 5-3 win over Edmonton. St. Louis had scored just six goals the previous three games, but McDonald logged more than 18 minutes on the top line with David Backes and Brad Boyes. McDonald was the Blues’ leading scorer before his injury, so his return could provide a huge boost as the Blues make a late playoff push.

-- Toronto Maple Leafs forward Phil Kessel was benched for part of Saturday's 6-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres and was visibly angry. When asked if Wilson had pulled him aside to talk things out, Kessel was pretty brisk, saying, “no, me and Ron don't really talk. That's all I have to say about that." Kessel has failed to score in 10 games and was been placed on a line with Darryl Boyce and Joey Crabb. Things are starting to fall apart for the reeling Maple Leafs, who host the Islanders on Tuesday.

-- Houston Rockets guard Aaron Brooks was been suspended for Monday's game against the Denver Nuggets for leaving the bench during the fourth quarter of Saturday's overtime win over the Memphis Grizzlies. Brooks began the season as a starter but suffered an ankle injury in early November that sidelined him for more than a month. Since his return he has come off the bench, spelling Kyle Lowry. Brooks was substituted out of Saturday's game with 6:45 left in the fourth quarter and headed for the locker room. Rockets coach Rick Adelman said it was not clear to him why Brooks left the bench. Brooks’ suspension is only for one game, but it is unclear if he will miss additional games, or if his outburst will lead to a reduction in his minutes even further. The Rockets host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best basketball bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      NBA

Indiana Pacers at Miami Heat (-11, 199)

It seems like all the Indiana Pacers needed to get back into the Eastern Conference playoff hunt was a little TLC from their head coach.

"He always has positive things to say. He tries to make you feel special. He's giving a lot of guys confidence. There's a huge parallel between him and Doc (Rivers) in terms of personality and love of the game," said Indiana swingman Dahntay Jones. "It's a good quality to have in a coach. He keeps our heads up. What Frank (Vogel) is doing is making sure that every day starts with a compliment and that's what we need."

As a result of getting some sugar from Vogel, their interim coach, as opposed to vinegar, from ex-coach Jim O’Brien, Indiana has reeled off four straight wins. Over that span the team is 3-1 ATS and has seen the under hit three times as the team is playing improved defense.

And it was strong defense that the Pacers relied on the last time the team faced the Heat. By holding Miami to a mere 38.7 percent shooting and forcing an absurd 22 turnovers the visitors were able to leave with a stunning 93-77 win.

"I think everyone is a little more loose now and we're doing different things," forward Josh McRoberts said. "I have a lot of respect for Coach O'Brien, but maybe sometimes change loosens things up. We now have a little bit more of a rotation and that's working."

      Pick: Indiana

      NCAAB

Xavier Musketeers at Georgia Bulldogs (-4.5, 138)

An NCAA Tournament bubble would likely burst for the loser of this late-season resume builder.

And the Musketeers appear to be streaking at the like time. Behind the standout play of guard Tu Holloway, Xavier has won eight of its past nine games and is 5-4 ATS over that span. The only straight up loss for the team from Cincinnati during that span was a 66-62 setback to Charlotte that saw Holloway make a mere 3 of 17 shots from the floor.

For the season he is averaging 20.8 points, five rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. The team is 13-2 when he cracks the 20-point mark.

“It’s fun to watch him play,” forward Kenny Frease said. “It’s fun to play with him.”

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are just 3-3 SU and 2-4 ATS over their past six games and have struggled to shutdown elite guards for other teams. In the team’s most recent game, an overtime win against lowly Auburn, Georgia let guard Earnest Ross go off for 30 points on 12-of-18 shooting. For the season, Ross entered the game averaging just 13.2 points per game.

On top of all that, the team also has been battling a flu bug making its way through the roster.

"We picked up some kind of virus [on] a tough trip to Arkansas," Georgia coach Mark Fox said. "Taking nothing away from Auburn, but we just didn't look like ourselves, some of us, on Saturday. ... I don't think it'll last too long, so hopefully we'll be fine by Tuesday night."

      Pick: Xavier

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at New York Islanders (-120, 5.5)

The Islanders aren’t going to make the playoffs, but they are starting to put together a consistent effort every night.

New York has won two of his past three games, including a 4-1 win over Atlanta and a 5-3 victory over Ottawa. The key for the Islanders has been the play of its offense, which cashed in on a power play in each of its victories. The team has relied on its balanced attack to find the back of the net.

In the win over the Thrashers, the team had four different goal scorers with stud center John Tavares contributing a pair of assists. Against the Senators, the team had four different goal scorers, including two and an assist from center Rob Schremp.

Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs are coming apart at the seams. The Leafs have dropped four of their past six and seven of 10 overall. The team’s horrid play has caused a rift between the coaches and players, coming to a head on Monday when star Phil Kessel sounded off to the media.

“Me and the (coach Ron Wilson) don’t really talk and that’s all I got to say about that,” Kessel fumed.

The former Bruins star is stuck on 19 goals and his entire line is going through an overhaul that is expected to continue to carry over into the team’s game against New York. Don’t expect the frustrated Kessel to break through anytime soon.

        Pick: Islanders

San Jose Sharks at Washington Capitals (-140, 5.5)

San Jose is continuing to take a bite out of the rest of the league. The Sharks are a white-hot 7-1 in their past eight games, including wins over Vancouver and Boston.

The team’s hot streak has been sparked by a renewed effort by the team’s defense. Over that eight game span, the team is conceding an average of just 2.1 goals per game -- a big drop from the 2.7 per game the team is allowing on the season overall.

Goaltender Antti Niemi is the backbone of the team’s inspired defense. He posted his third shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over Boston on Saturday. Overall, he has a 2.66 goals-against average this season and a .916 save percentage.

"I know people have been waiting for the coach or someone else in the organization to say, 'Hey, he's our No. 1,' " San Jose coach Todd McLellan said. “I'm saying that now, and I'm expecting him to continue playing that way. But we have exactly zero fear of putting the other guy in there as well."

On the other bench, the Capitals are still trying to find a consistent level of play as the team has dropped three of its past five games.

“At this time of year, we can’t afford to just be good for 20 minutes,” Capitals forward Mathieu Perreault said. “It’s got to be 60 minutes.”

        Pick: San Jose

              Daily Sports Roundup: February 8

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Pistons welcome the league-leading Spurs to Detroit, San Diego State battles with Utah, and the injured Penguins take on Columbus.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up seven games on Tuesday, with Philadelphia at Atlanta, the Clippers at Orlando, Indiana at Miami, Toronto at Milwaukee, Memphis at Oklahoma City, Minnesota at Houston, and San Antonio at Detroit. The Spurs (42-8 SU, 30-18-2 ATS) have managed to pick up the win in each of their last two contests, beating Sacramento 113-100 on the road in their last outing on Friday. Tony Parker had a team-high 25 points to go along with seven assists for San Antonio in that win, while DeJuan Blair was good for 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Pistons (19-32 SU, 29-22 ATS) have also won two games in a row, getting past Milwaukee 89-78 on the road in their last matchup. Tracy McGrady led the way on offense for Detroit with 20 points in that victory.

Games involving ranked teams on the college basketball schedule for Tuesday then include Indiana at No. 14 Purdue, Tennessee at No. 18 Kentucky, and Utah at No. 6 San Diego State. The Aztecs (23-1 SU, 12-8 ATS) and Utes (10-13 SU, 8-11 ATS) met in Utah back on January 8, with San Diego State surging to a 71-62 road win in that contest. Kawhi Leonard led the way with 20 points for the Aztecs in that victory, while Malcolm Thomas contributed 17 points and 14 rebounds. Josh Watkins had a game-high 24 points that day for the Utes, who had been listed as 11-point home underdogs.

              Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are six games on the ice around the NHL on Tuesday, with Carolina at New Jersey, Toronto at the Islanders, San Jose at Washington, Buffalo at Tampa Bay, St. Louis at Florida, and Columbus at Pittsburgh. The Blue Jackets won 4-3 at home against Edmonton in their last game on Saturday to improve to 25-22-5 on the season, but they were blasted 7-2 at home by Pittsburgh when the teams last met back on December 4. Sidney Crosby and Paul Martin each had a pair of goals for the Penguins in that victory, with Chris Clark and Samuel Pahlsson replying for the Blue Jackets. Crosby (concussion) remains out of the Pittsburgh lineup indefinitely, while fellow Pens superstar forward Evgeni Malkin will miss the rest of the year with a serious knee injury.

                Tuesday's six-pack

Cleveland Cavaliers set a new record Monday, with their 25th loss in a row, breaking the record held by the '82 Cavaliers........here is some info on the '82 Cleveland Cavaliers........

-- '82 Cavs finished 15-67 and had four different head coaches, including Chuck Daly (9-32), Bill Musselman (2-21), Bob Kloppenburg (0-3) and Don Delaney (4-11). Daly went on to win titles with the Pistons.

-- Bill Laimbeer was in his 2nd NBA season; he would move on to the Pistons and help Daly win championships. He's now an assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

-- Richard Washington and Bobby Wilkerson helped their college teams win national titles in mid 70's, at UCLA/Indiana; no such luck here.

-- James Silas was an outstanding player with the Spurs; he was in his 10th NBA season here. His son Xavier is a very good player right now at Northern Illinois, after transferring from Colorado.

-- 23 different players wore the wine and gold that season; their leading scorer was Mike Mitchell, who scored 19.6 ppg in 27 games.

-- This was Cleveland's 5th straight losing season; it would be four more years before they made the playoffs. You wonder how long it'll be until Cleveland gets good again. It could be quite a while.

                ****************************

Tuesday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind........

                13) Super Bowl telecast was most watched TV show in history, which is something that should go over well at bargaining table the next few weeks.

                12) Tennessee Titans hired offensive line coach Mike Munchak as their new head coach; going to be tough for him to round up a quality staff, seeing as the team’s franchise QB wants out and the team’s owner is an octogenarian wackjob. Will be interesting to see how much of Jeff Fisher’s old staff stays in Nashville, seeing as Munchak was on that staff. In any event, not the best day to be a Titans' fan.

                11) Solid win for Pitt Panthers last night in Morgantown, winning with one of their best players, Ashton Gibbs, out with a bad knee. If they get Gibbs back healthy, Panthers are a legit threat to make the Final Four.

                10) Whats with the 10am local time tipoff for St John’s-UCLA Saturday? Why not play the game Sunday afternoon, at a more reasonable hour?

                9) Rumors had singer Jon Bon Jovi forking over $150M for 10% of the Atlanta Falcons; Bon Jovi is a Jersey guy who owned the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena League, where his GM was Ron Jaworski.

                8) So Larry Drew II quits North Carolina’s basketball team, then the Tar Heels go out and whack Florida State by 20 in its first game without him; the real test is Wednesday, the first UNC-Duke matchup of the season. Tar Heels are very thin in the backcourt.

                7) Clemson averaged 77,469 fans per home football game this past season, but ranked only 17th in the country in home attendance.

                6) Of the 12 teams in the SEC, seven of them averaged over 75,000 fans per home game; then there’s Vanderbilt, which averaged just over 33,000 per home game. Vandy is a tough job; they couldn’t get to a bowl game when Jay Cutler was their QB, and you only have to be 6-5 to get to a bowl. With revenue sharing in SEC, does Vandy really care if it loses?

                5) Michigan Wolverines averaged 111,825 fans per home game LY. Thats 20,000 more fans than any stadium in the NFL seats.

                4) Shooting must be in genes; the mom of Bulls' Kyle Korver once scored 74 points in a high school game in Iowa.

                3) Michael Young is the captain of the Texas Rangers; he's changed his position twice (2B to SS, SS to 3B) to help his team, but now he wants out of Arlington, supposedly because the Rangers lied to him about if they tried to trade him or not. He will be a great get for some lucky team.

                2) Rumors are getting stronger that the Atlanta Thrashers are moving up to Winnipeg; there should be more NHL teams in Canada. They love the game and will support it better than a city in the American south.

                1) Steve Nash turned 37 Monday. Suns have a definite quandary, as far as whether to trade him or not. They’re not going to go anywhere this year, so trading him for future help makes some sense, but totally alienating your fanbase is also a major concern. At one point, they had Joe Johnson-Marion-Stoudemire-Nash-Barbosa all on the same team. It’s a shame they didn’t keep that group together.
