Rangers at Red Wings: What bettors need to know
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Detroit Red Wings (-196, 5.5)

THE STORY: Surrendering back-to-back shutouts to Central Division rivals has not made Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock a happy camper. The Red Wings will look to get back on track when they host the struggling New York Rangers on Monday night. New York has dropped four in a row and seven of its last 10.

    TV: 7:30 ET, VERSUS, TSN2

ODDS: Books opened with the Red Wings set as -193 home favorites. The total is set at 5.5.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (31-15-6): Jimmy Howard (25-9-3, 2.85 goals-against average) grew up as a Rangers fan. That's not much of a surprise considering he is a New York native. Howard will get his second career start against the Rangers on Monday. He made good on his previous one - turning aside 28 shots in a 3-1 win on Dec. 6, 2009. Injured stars Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Holmstrom are inching closer to the ice, and may be able to compete against New York.

ABOUT THE RANGERS (29-22-4): New York has fared well away from Broadway this season, posting a 17-10-1 mark. Henrik Lundqvist (21-17-4, 2.35 goals-against average) was pulled in his last start, has dropped three straight and now faces a Detroit club which has beaten him in all three career decisions. Should Martin Biron get the start, the veteran netminder is 7-4-0 with a 1.95 goals-against average in his last 14 contests.

WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Detroit center Justin Abdelkader has not scored a goal since Nov. 17 - a span of 36 games. Marian Gaborik has scored just one goal in his last seven contests. For a team struggling to score goals, Gaborik needs to step it up if New York is going to snap its losing skid.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Detroit has converted 21.1 percent of its power plays, while killing off 81.4 percent of its opponents' chances. For its part, New York has scored on 15.7 percent of its opportunities with the man-advantage, while killing off 84.1 percent of its shorthanded situations.

SEASON SERIES: Monday's contest marks the first between the two this season. Detroit has won the last four meetings and 11 of the last 12.

KEY INJURIES: NEW YORK: C Chris Drury (knee); LW Ruslan Fedotenko (appendix); LW Derek Boogaard (shoulder); DETROIT: C Pavel Datsyuk (hand); LW Tomas Holmstrom (hand); C Mike Modano (wrist); G Chris Osgood (groin); D Brad Stuart (jaw).

LAST WORD: Currently the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference standings, the Rangers are just four points ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes and Atlanta Thrashers.

    TRENDS:

    * Rangers are 1-11 in the last 12 meetings.
    * Rangers are 0-5 in the last five meetings in Detroit.
    * Red Wings are 4-9 in their last 13 vs. Atlantic.
    * Rangers are 3-7 in their last 10 vs. Central.

Pucking the trends: Weekly NHL betting trends
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

      HOT TEAM: Philadelphia Flyers

As expected, the Flyers weren’t taking the bait in Philadelphia Saturday. After their second home win in three days, a 3-1 decision over Dallas, many of the players were asked about the Atlantic Division race, now that their chief rival, the Pittsburgh Penguins, will be without center Evgeni Malkin for the rest of the season.

Nobody wanted to touch that one. Nobody wants to talk about capitalizing on another team’s misfortune. We understand.

But you can’t help but think the Flyers received an extra boost, knowing the Penguins, who appeared on a collision course with Philadelphia for the Eastern Conference Finals, will have a tough road ahead of them now that both of their stars, Sidney Crosby and Malkin, are out.

And let’s face it, maybe the Flyers are just the better team, anyway. After all, they have won four of five, seven of nine and had a three-point lead on the rest of the conference heading into Sunday.

They should be rested and ready this week, too. They play just one game over the next seven days, versus Carolina Thursday.

      COLD TEAM: Edmonton Oilers

Points are precious this time of year, but in the Western Conference, with the tangled web that is the playoff race, they are absolutely priceless.

As such, contending teams must make the most of their games vs. inferior opponents. Unfortunately, for the Oilers, they are suffering because of it.

This young team, which has put together some surprising runs at times this season, is in a funk, and opponents are cashing in. The Oilers have lost four in a row, eight out of nine and lost three games in four days after the All-Star break ended.

The misery may continue during the early part of this week, too. Edmonton plays two of those contending teams, Nashville and Chicago, in a three-day span, starting on Monday.

The good news is that Ottawa comes to town Saturday.

      OVER PLAY: Calgary Flames

The Los Angeles Kings put an end to Calgary’s six-game winning streak Saturday night, but that doesn’t mean forget about the Flames. They still grabbed a point in that 4-3 shootout loss and perhaps, more important for totals players out there, they secured another over.

Indeed, Calgary’s midseason surge has been a welcome sight for over players. Since the All-Star break, the Flames are 2-0-1 over, and across a span of nine games, they are 6-2-1.

In the last four games, Calgary has averaged 5.75 goals, for and against. That’s a perfect clip in the over world.

But this week might be a challenge. The Flames, beginning Monday, play four games in six days, three of them versus Western Conference playoff contenders: Chicago, Anaheim, and Vancouver.

      UNDER PLAY: Boston Bruins

You would think, with All-Star goalie Tim Thomas playing the way he has all season, that the Bruins would be a mainstay here. They have enough offense to keep them in over discussions as well.

But, the goals have been hard to come by of late. And when this team starts squeezing it stick a little bit, you have a quality under play, simply because you know Thomas, most likely, is going to be Thomas in net.

Saturday, at home, versus San Jose was a perfect example. It was a matinee start, former Bruin Joe Thornton was in town and Boston was a little shaky. Thomas started and played well, but the Sharks won, 2-0. Under city.

And all of a sudden, the Bruins had four unders in the past five games.

Perhaps more of that is on the way this week, as the Bruins play Montreal and Detroit. What’s more, they don’t play again until Wednesday, so Thomas will be fresh and will most likely live up to his end of the under bargain anyway.

      Surveying the schedule:

-- The short-handed Penguins have a busy week and their depth will be tested severely. Sunday’s game versus the Capitals began a stretch of four games in six days. The only good news, is travel. Two of those games are at home and the only other one, is at the Islanders Friday.

-- If the Kings are going to cement themselves in the Western Conference playoff race, this is a good week to gain momentum. Following Saturday’s win over Calgary, the Kings began a stretch of four days off. So, they’ll be plenty rested when they take to the East later this week. They play at Pittsburgh Thursday, and at Washington Saturday.

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Vancouver Canucks (-239, 5.5)

Ottawa might need to petition the league to play the entire game with a man advantage to have a chance. The Senators have lost nine straight overall, giving up an average of 4.2 goals per game over that span. Of the nine losses, five have come by two or more goals.

And the goaltending is doing the team no favors. In his first start since the All-Star break, Brian Elliott was shelled for three goals on 13 shots in a 5-3 loss to the Islanders. Backup Robin Lehner has been pretty awful as well, coughing up 10 goals in his past three starts.

"We need better goaltending," Ottawa head coach Cory Clouston said. "I don't know how else to say it. We need saves early on. We shouldn't have come out of the period tied 3-3. At least a one-or two-goal lead for sure."

It might not matter who is in the net against the Canucks. Vancouver would score on a brick wall at this point, totaling 23 goals in the past five games – all wins. Over their past 10, the Canucks have banged home 10 goals on the man advantage.

Overall, the Canucks have won five of the team’s past six meetings, including a 6-2 win earlier this season.

        Pick: Canucks

Atlanta Thrashers at Toronto Maple Leafs (-125, 5.5)

Think the injury to Thrashers defenseman Tobias Enstrom wasn’t a big deal? Since breaking a finger before the All-Star game, the team has gone 1-4 without him. In the losses, the team has given up a staggering 19 goals.

“Obviously Toby has been an incredibly important part of our team,” Thrashers coach Craig Ramsay said. “He’s been a big part of this organization. We are going to miss him. It is a great opportunity for other guys to step in and fill that spot. Guys get a better chance to play and more ice time. If you look at what happens to our team, nobody is going to feel sorry for us. We have to fight through injuries.”

Since Enstrom was hurt, the over has hit in three of five games.

And it’s not like Toronto is playing defensive hockey either. The over has hit six times in the past 10 games for the Maple Leafs as the team is coming off a 6-2 loss to the Sabres. In two previous meetings between these two teams, a 6-3 Atlanta win and a 9-3 Toronto victory, they have combined for 21 goals with a staggering nine coming on the power play.

Expect the goal judges to get plenty of work in this one.

        Pick: Over
