    Daily Sports Roundup: February 7

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Avalanche head south for a game against the Coyotes, while Pittsburgh takes on West Virginia, and the Blazers play host to the Bulls.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Eight games make up the NBA's schedule for Monday, with Boston at Charlotte, Minnesota at New Orleans, the Lakers at Memphis, Cleveland at Dallas, Houston at Denver, Utah at Sacramento, Phoenix at Golden State, and Chicago at Portland. The Bulls played host to the Trail Blazers back on November 1, winning 110-98 as a 1-point favorite in that OVER result. Luol Deng exploded for 40 points for the Bulls in that victory, while Derrick Rose pitched in with 16 points and 13 assists. Kyle Korver had 11 points off the bench for Chicago. LaMarcus Aldridge led the Trail Blazers with 33 points.

There are then two ranked matchups on the college basketball schedule for Monday, with No. 14 Missouri at No. 2 Kansas, and No. 4 Pittsburgh at No. 25 West Virginia. The Mountaineers will be looking to bounce back from their 66-50 road loss to No. 12 Villanova on Saturday afternoon, with Kevin Jones scoring 16 points for West Virginia in that contest. John Flowers tossed in 15 points in that loss. The Panthers cruised to a 71-59 home win over Cincinnati in their last game on Saturday night, as Ashton Gibbs poured in a game-high 25 points and Gilbert Brown added 11 points. Pittsburgh and West Virginia last played back on February 12, 2010, with the Panthers winning 98-95.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL has six games on tap for Monday, with Atlanta at Toronto, the Rangers at Detroit, Edmonton at Nashville, Chicago at Calgary, Ottawa at Vancouver, and Colorado at Phoenix. The Avalanche and Coyotes met twice in Colorado in January, with Phoenix winning 2-0 on January 6 and 5-2 on January 26. Eric Belanger had a pair of markers for the Coyotes in that last matchup, while Kyle Turris, Scottie Upshall, and Keith Yandle had one goal apiece. Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 29 of 31 Colorado shots. Matt Duchene and Ryan Stoa replied for Avs. Phoenix has won four straight versus Colorado.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Injury to remember

Josh Selby, Kansas Jayhawks – Selby missed Saturday’s blowout victory over Nebraska and is listed as questionable for Monday’s tilt with Missouri. Selby had scored at least 12 points in three straight games before spraining his left ankle and averages 12 points at 3.2 assists per game. The Jayhawks are pegged as 10-point favorites with the total pegged at 154.

      Key trends

NCAAB: Kansas has covered in each of its last five meetings with Mizzou and heads into Monday’s game having covered in three straight overall.

NCAAB: West Virginia has played under the total in five straight contests.

NBA: Minnesota Timberwolves have dropped eight of their last 10 games against the spread and each of their last four games have played under the total.

NBA: Memphis Grizzlies are riding a 23-9 run against the spread overall.

NBA: Cleveland Cavaliers have lost 23 straight games and 33 of their last 34. The Cavs are 3-1-1 ATS in their last five outings.

NBA: Utah has covered just five times over the last 20 games.

NHL: The New York Rangers have lost four straight games for the first time this season and have lost 11 of their last 12 games against Detroit.

      Number of note

4.2 – Goals per game the Ottawa Senators are allowing over a nine-game losing streak. The Sens are coming off a 5-3 loss to the lowly Islanders after getting outgunned 7-5 by Detroit in the game before that. It doesn’t get any easier for Ottawa as the club visits a Vancouver club that has won five straight games, allowing just six goals over that span.

      Notes and tips

The Houston Rockets have suspended guard Aaron Brooks for Monday’s game against the Denver Nuggets because he walked off the court and into the locker room after being subbed out midway through an overtime win over Memphis on Saturday. Brooks, who averages 12.2 points and 4.1 assists per game, obviously isn’t happy about his role as a reserve at the moment. He has talent and won last season’s Most Improved Player award, but isn’t fitting in well with coach Rick Adelman’s share-the-ball offense.

Peter Forsberg is officially making a comeback with the Colorado Avalanche, though the team still isn’t sure when he’ll suit up. The 37-year-old center has been working out with the team over the last week or so and made up his mind to return to the NHL over the weekend. Word has it that he’s skating well and appears healthy. The team hasn’t said who he’ll play with yet, but he should help out a power play that checks in just under 20 percent on the season. Colorado is set as a +120 underdog at Phoenix on Monday.

Don’t look now, but Carmelo Anthony trade talks are heating up again. ESPN’s Chris Broussard reports that Denver and New York are negotiating again with Minnesota as the all-important third team in a rumored deal that would move Eddy Curry’s contract and Anthony Rondolph to the T-Wolves, Corey Brewer and Wilson Chandler to Denver and ‘Melo to the Knicks. There is also some discussion that a first-round pick would have to be involved somehow.

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ Phil Kessel hasn’t scored a goal in 10 games and the mercurial winger isn’t happy. After being benched in Saturday’s 6-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres, Kessel shed some light on his relationship with coach Ron Wilson and his future with the team. “No, me and Ron don't really talk,” Kessel said when asked if Wilson had spoke to him about the slump. “That's all I have to say about that. "I don't really know what to say about that any more. I'm trying. Obviously, it's not going right. It might not be working out here. What are you going to do?"

        Monday's six-pack

According to Baseball America, six of Red Sox' best prospects:

        23) Junichi Tazawa, P-- Skipped Japanese big leagues, came here in '09, made four starts for big club, then had Tommy John surgery.

        14) Xander Bogaerts, SS-- Hit .314 as a 17-year old in summer league in Dominican;
Aruba native supposedly has a plus arm.

        8) Lars Anderson, 1B-- .372 OB% in 501 minor league games, went 7-35 in big league cameo. Path to bigs now blocked by Adrian Gonzalez.

        5) Feliz Doubront, P-- Lefty starter who allowed 508 hits in 537 IP in 113 minor league starts. Always a market for guys like that.

        2) Anthony Ranaudo, P-- Was highly regarded at LSU until injuries set him back LY. 6-7 righty will make his pro debut at Class A Salem.

        1) Jose Iglesias, SS-- Cuban IF defected in 2008, then signed a contract worth $8.25M with Red Sox. Hit .275 in Arizona Fall League.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a fairly super Sunday.........

        13) If you're a high school athlete and you believe in yourself, and no one offers you a college scholarship, Aaron Rodgers is your hero. Rodgers is Super Bowl MVP, but he got zero scholarship offers out of high school. None. He went to a junior college. Now he's really rich.

        12) How happy is Packer GM Ted Thompson tonight? Villified for the Brett Favre fiasco, Thompson is now totally vindicated. Favre winds up as a washed-up pervert, and Aaron Rodgers is a world champion.

        11) Tough week for Jerry Jones, whose week hosting the Super Bowl is best forgotten, with horrible weather, ticket foul-ups and no Cowboys in the game. Might be a while before he gets to host another one. At least none of the punters drilled his video board with a practice punt.

        10) Phoenix Open was delayed all week by cold weather, so they wound up playing until the sun went down, which meant until about halftime of the Super Bowl. Was funny to see guys golfing with almost no one in the gallery....I'm talking handfuls of people, and small handfuls at that.

        9) Wow do I hate the anti-celebration rule; think it should be done away with after touchdowns. I can see limiting theatrics after a first down or a sack, but if a guy scores a TD, let him have fun. He deserves it.

        8) NFC has now won the coin toss in the last 14 Super Bowls.

        7) Not sure why Joe Buck/Troy Aikman never referenced LY's Steelers win over Green Bay, when Pittsburgh, down six in last 2:00, drove length of field, scoring TD on last play of game to win 37-36. This game was the same exact scenario, yet it was never mentioned.

        6) Christina Aguilera caused a kerfuffle when she screwed up her singing of the National Anthem; her time came in under the total, but she left out a lot of the words. Thats what you get for gambling on singers.

        5) How many more wins until Ohio State's undefeated hoop team starts making Indiana fans nervous? '76 Hoosiers are the last undefeated team in college hoop-- Buckeyes have Wisconsin/Purdue, then the Big 11 tourney before possibly entering the NCAA tournament without a loss.

        4) Central Florida was 13-0 at one point and a great Cinderella story, but now the Golden Knights are........13-7. Conference USA has gotten little better, so wins are harder to come by, but wheels are falling off for UCF.

        3) Miami Hurricanes are 3-4 in their last seven games; the seven games were decided by a total of 15 points. If only they had a point guard.

        2) Think about it, had the Giants not blown a 31-10 lead in 4th quarter at home to the Eagles, and the Packers would've missed the playoffs. Now they're world champs. The line between success and failure is very thin.

        1) Seeing as defending champs generally open the next season at home, it makes sense that the 2011 opener could easily be Saints at Packers, with the last two Super Bowl champs facing off. Assuming there is a 2011.

                            NBA

Los Angeles Lakers at Memphis Grizzlies (3.5, 195)

No team in the league dominates the offensive paint like the Grizzlies. Memphis averages an NBA-best 49.8 points per game in the paint this season. But with the stellar play of forward Zach Randolph, it’s surprising those numbers aren't actually higher.

Randolph was named the Western Conference Player of the Month for January for keeping his team in the playoff hunt despite a suspension to guard O.J. Mayo. Without Mayo, the team has relied on its low-post attack and Z-Bo has delivered.

The former Michigan State star is averaging 20.3 points and 13.3 rebounds per game.

"It's definitely an honor for me," Randolph said. "It's my first time to win Player of the Month. Individual awards are great, but my focus is on leading this team to the playoffs. I'm glad were having success as a team, and hopefully we keep our momentum going."

Memphis split its two games against the Lakers this season, but Randolph missed the first. In the second, a 98-96 Grizzlies win, Randolph had 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Overall, the Lakers have a very mediocre post defense, giving up more than 40 points per game in the paint.

Look for Randolph to continue to take advantage.

                            Pick: Grizzlies

Pittsburgh Panthers at West Virginia Mountaineers (-2, 130)

Mountaineers coach Bob Huggins claims his team isn’t wearing down and has no issues with depth. The scoreboard seems to indicate otherwise.

"They play a hundred of them in the NBA against the best athletes in the world,'' Huggins said. "A hundred of them. They seem to keep playing. We're fine. We've just got to make some shots.''

But the team didn’t make many shots in a 66-50 loss at Villanova on Saturday. West Virginia struggled against a physical and faster Wildcats team, going as deep as it could into its bench. In recent games against Louisville and Cincinnati, Huggins played a mere seven. He went eight deep against Seton Hall and attempted to go with a nine man rotation against the Wildcats. But the results didn’t pan out. In the loss to Villanova he tried to give some of his starters a rest, but recently reinstated forward Casey Mitchell logged just 13 minutes and Jonnie West played only a couple.

Overall, the West Virginia bench combined for 13 points on 5-of-16 shooting and committed four turnovers.

Meantime, the Panthers come calling off a 71-59 win over Cincinnati that saw eight different players make a basket. The turnaround from a Saturday game to a Monday game also is West Virginia’s shortest break all season between contests.

Hopefully they got to bed early – they are going to need their rest.

                            Pick: Pittsburgh

Missouri at Kansas: What bettors need to know
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                              Missouri Tigers at Kansas Jayhawks

With the football season now in the rear-view mirror, our focus shifts to the hardwood where a battle of Big 12 basketball powers tips off when Kansas (22-1, 7-1) hosts Missouri (18-5, 4-4) at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence Monday. The Tigers will be looking to settle a score from a pair of losses suffered against the Jayhawks last season.

                              Twin engines

Marcus and Markieff Morris, the twin-brother engines that power the nation’s No. 2-ranked team, have been firing on all cylinders this season.

The two forwards are averaging 16.7 points per game and 60.1 percent from the field and 13.1 points per game and 58.7 percent from the field, respectively.

Together they combined for 33 points on 11-of-13 shooting in Kansas’ 86-66 win over Nebraska Saturday. Both misses were 3-pointers by Marcus.

Jayhawks head coach Bill Self said it would be difficult to lose Marcus and Markieff. Self said they are the two best passers and that when they pass well, the rest of the team benefits.

As a result, backup senior guard Brady Morningstar enjoyed his best statistical game of the season when he went 5 for 7 from the field. The resurgent Morningstar had 19 points and six assists with no turnovers.

Morningstar answered the call when Self sat freshman guard Josh Selby with a stress reaction in his right foot. Self insisted sitting Selby was because of precautionary measures and said Morningstar did a good job stepping up on the starting role.

“I really don’t expect much of a drop off even though I know our best players have to play,” Self said. “I think we have a bunch of best players.”

                              Defense be damned

The 86 points Kansas scored is the most Nebraska, with the best defense in the conference, has surrendered since Feb. 17 of last year.

With the Jayhawks shooting 55.6 percent from the field and 54.2 percent from behind the arc, it didn’t matter how good the opposing defense is.

“I thought, the entire game offensively, that’s as good as we can execute,” coach Self said. “Of course, it helps when you make shots, and we had some guys step up.”

                              Tiger pause

Missouri leaped out of the starting gate with a 14-1 record in its first fifteen games this season before hitting the skids.

The Tigers posted a 3-4 record in its previous seven contests heading into Saturday’s game against Colorado before finally coming away with a convincing 89-73 victory.

Head coach Mike Anderson shook up the lineup after consecutive Big 12
road losses, benching guard Kim English.

English, Missouri's top scorer from last year with a 14-point average, was 1 for 8 with four points at Oklahoma State and entered the game shooting 29 percent in conference play.

A starter in 21 of Missouri’s 22 games this season, English responded with 21 points in a rare reserve role.

                              More brotherly love

Not to be outdone by Kansas’ Morris brothers, Missouri started a brother-tandem of its own for the first time this season when Phil and Matt Pressey teamed together in Saturday’s win over Colorado.

The siblings are the sons of former Milwaukee Bucks All-Star Paul Pressey.

Phil Pressey had 13 points, five steals and three assists, but Matt Pressey contributed only three points in 22 minutes.

                              In this series

                              Kansas is:
                              • 4-0 ATS the last four meetings
                              • 11-5 ATS when the Tigers own a win percentage of more than .700

                              Missouri is:
                              • 16-8-1 ATS when the Jayhawks own a win percentage of .840 or greater
                              • 9-6 ATS when the Jayhawks are off a win of 20 or ore points

                              Tape measure

According to *********** College Basketball Statistics, here is a breakdown of how each team ranks among 345 others in three pivotal stat categories, namely offensive field goal percentage, defensive field goal percentage and rebound margin this season:

                              Offensive FG Percentage –
                              Kansas 52.0 – No. 1
                              Missouri 46.6 – No. 43

                              Defensive FG Percentage –
                              Kansas 38.3 – No. 10
                              Missouri 42.1 – No. 116

                              Rebound Margin –
                              Kansas +7.7 - No. 9
                              Missouri -0.6 – No. 194

                              Chew on this

Kansas coach Bill Self is 95-9 straight up and 60-41-3 against the spread at home in conference games during his career as a Division-1 coach, including 26-11-1 ATS versus a conference foe off a SU and ATS win.
