    Daily Sports Roundup: February 6

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Celtics host the Magic, the Penguins visit the Capitals, and the Steelers take on the Packers in Super Bowl XLV at Cowboys Stadium.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The National Football League season comes to a close on Sunday night with Super Bowl XLV between the Packers and Steelers at Cowboys Stadium. The Steelers made it to Texas with a 24-19 home win over the Jets in the AFC Championship Game two weeks ago. Ben Roethlisberger completed 10 of 19 pass attempts for 133 yards with two interceptions for the Steelers that day, but Rashard Mendenhall picked up some of the slack by rushing for 121 yards and a score. The Packers won 21-14 on the road in Chicago in the NFC Championship Game, as Aaron Rodgers went 17 of 30 for 244 yards passing and a pair of picks. Oddsmakers are siding with Green Bay for Sunday, setting them as 2.5 or 3-point favorites depending on the book. The total is set at 44.5.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Earlier in the day on Sunday the NBA schedule features four games, with the Clippers at Miami, Philadelphia at New York, Indiana at New Jersey, and Orlando at Boston. The Celtics took care of the Magic 109-106 at home as a 3-point favorite when the Eastern Conference contenders last met on January 17. Ray Allen was one of six Boston players to pick up double-digit points in that win, as he was good for a team-high 26. Rajon Rondo contributed 10 points and 13 assists that night. Dwight Howard poured in 33 points to go along with 13 boards in that losing cause for Orlando, and Ryan Anderson had 16 points off the bench. Orlando is 3-1-1 ATS in their last five vs. Boston.

As well, four games feature ranked teams on the college basketball schedule for Sunday, with Rutgers at No. 9 Notre Dame, Michigan State at No. 19 Wisconsin, Florida State at No. 23 North Carolina, and No. 1 Ohio State at No. 18 Minnesota. The 18th-ranked Golden Gophers will be looking to bounce back from a 60-57 road loss to Indiana in their last game, which dropped them to 16-6 SU and 8-11 ATS on the season; Blake Hoffarber had 15 points for Minnesota that day. The Gophers also lost to Ohio State earlier in the season, falling 67-64 in a tight road game back on January 9; Trevor Mbakwe had 16 points for Minnesota, and David Lighty scored 19 points for Ohio State.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are three games on the NHL's Sunday slate, with New Jersey at Montreal, St. Louis at Tampa Bay, and Pittsburgh at Washington. The Penguins and Capitals last met in the Winter Classic at Heinz Field on New Year's Day, with Washington rolling to a 3-1 road victory in that contest. Eric Fehr led the way on offense for the Capitals that day with a pair of goals, and Mike Knuble had the other Washington marker. Semyon Varlamov made 32 saves in that win for the Caps, and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 29 of 32 shots between the pipes for the Pens. Fehr is currently out of the Washington lineup with a shoulder injury; Pens star forward Sidney Crosby (concussion) is out indefinitely.

Bettors' best friend: Sunday's wagering tips

      Injuries to remember

Donald Driver, Erik Walden, Green Bay Packers: Linebacker Erik Walden is considered a game-time decision for Sunday’s Super Bowl with an ankle injury. The team plans to have Walden take the field early in wamups to see whether he’s fit to play. Veteran receiver Donald Driver missed Friday’s workout with a quadriceps injury that has bothered him for most of the season. However, the team said it held him out as a precaution and he’s expected to start. Driver had just one catch for nine yards in Green Bay’s win over Chicago in the NFC Championship game.

      Key trends

NHL: Washington has won five of its last six games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, who have played under the total in seven of their last eight.

NHL: St. Louis has won only seven of its last 27 road games.

NHL: New Jersey and Montreal have played under the total in nine of their last 12 matchups.

NCAAB: Rutgers has lost three straight games but has covered the number in 10 of its last 12 meetings with Notre Dame.

NCAAB: Ohio State continues to roll straight up, but has dropped six of its last nine games against the spread.

NCAAB: Michigan State has dropped eight straight games against the spread.

NBA: Miami has played over in four straight games while the L.A. Clippers have topped the total three consecutive times heading into Sunday afternoon’s game.

NBA: Indiana has covered in each of its last five games against New Jersey, which has dropped four of its last five contests against the spread overall.

      Number of note

0 – Number of times the Green Bay Packers have trailed by more than seven points over 19 total games this season. The Packers, who are set as 3-point favorites against the Pittsburgh Steelers, head into Sunday’s Super Bowl having covered in five of their last six games.

      Notes and tips

-The Pittsburgh Steelers planned to switch hotels, opting for a secret location to avoid distractions on Saturday. Packers coach Mike McCarthy is opting for a different strategy. "I've received feedback from clubs that have left the hotel and stayed," McCarthy told reporters. "Seeking routine and consistency in how we've operated in the past, I chose to stay in the same hotel. I've heard positives from both sides."

-Maurkice Pouncey has been a household name over the last two weeks due to the ankle injury that will keep Pittsburgh’s No. 1 center out of the Super Bowl. The NFL Network’s Albert Breer reports that the Packers plan to go right after backup center Doug Legursky with B.J. Raji early in Sunday’s game. Raji has five sacks in the last eight games and took an interception to the end zone in the NFC Championship game against Chicago. "The NFL is made up of lots of players like (Legursky): guys who somehow got an opportunity and seized it," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin told reporters. "We're completely confident that he will seize this opportunity and play well."

      - Kendrick Perkins will see more minutes for the Boston Celtics now that Jermaine O’Neal will be out up to eight weeks following knee surgery. Shaquille O’Neal is also banged up with an inflamed Achilles, so Perkins will have to step his game up. He made his first start of the season Friday after coming back from ACL surgery in the offseason and put up 13 points and 12 rebounds in 32 minutes of work in Friday’s 101-97 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. Perkins will have his hands full dealing with Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic on Sunday. The Celtics are set as 4.5-point favorites.

        Sunday's six-pack

Knowledge from Arizona's triple overtime win at Cal

-- Arizona is now 21-5 in its last 26 games against the Cal Bears.

        -- Arizona's bench outscored Cal's 52-3. In a triple OT game. 52-3.

-- Arizona's MoMo Jones tied the game with 0:16 left in regulation, hit a game-tying trey with 0:05 left in second OT, then put Arizona ahead for good with 1:03 left in the third OT. Thats a pretty full day.

-- Of California's 69 field goal attempts, two came from subs. Two. 85 of their 105 points came from only three players.

-- Arizona's Kevin Parrom had 25 points, six rebounds and six assists, and he didn't start. Wildcats' leading scorer Derrick Williams fouled out in regulation, so Arizona had to play the last 16:00 without him.

-- Arizona has now won five games in a row and eight of last ten, and leads the Pac-10 by 1.5 games.

        *************************************

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college basketball Saturday

        13) Best game of the day was in Berkeley, where Arizona won a game both teams deserved to win, 107-105 over California in triple overtime.

        12) Worst game of the day was in New Orleans, where UAB shot 27.7% but still managed to hold off incredibly inept Tulane 47-39; after watching this entire debacle, had to take a shower to wash the hideousness away. If both teams in Berkeley deserved to win, both of these teams deserved to leave Fogelman Arena with a big fat loss.

        11) Duquesne and Oakland both lost their first conference game and both lost it on the road. Dukes lost at St Bonaventure, Oakland at IUPUI.

        10) Rough week for Washington, who in span of a week, lost at both the Oregon schools and at Washington State. Not good. Question becomes whether there are off-court distractions bothering Washington's players?

        9) Memphis won at Gonzaga, in game that is scheduled to increase the RPI of both teams for seeding in NCAA tournament; problem this year is that both are going to have to win conference tourneys just to get in.

        8) Clemson shot 56.8% from floor and won at Georgia Tech, sweeping the Yellow Jackets. Tigers are a well-coached, interesting team.

        7) BYU beat UNLV again, pretty much because Rebels don't shoot the ball well at all; Cougars are just better. UNLV held BYU to 40.4% from floor, and still lost by 14. This is BYU's year to shine, before they bolt the Mountain West to join the WCC (why?) for basketball.

        6) Princeton stands alone atop the Ivy League after Harvard beat Penn in double OT; there is no conference tourney in Ivy League, so if Princeton beats Penn Tuesday, they're halfway home to winning a league title.

        5) Butler scored an unexpected win at Cleveland State; Horizon tourney is going to be awesome; Vikings, Butler and Valparaiso all have a real shot.

        4) It doesn't look good for Sidney Lowe at NC State; Wolfpack was down 53-24 at halftime in Durham Saturday, lost at Duke by 24. They haven't gotten much better. Impatient/unrealistics fanbase drove Herb Sendek to leave Raleigh for Arizona State, and he was a lot more successful with the Pack than Lowe has been.

        3) LaSalle coach John Giannini coached barefoot Saturday, to promote a charity. Dude had a suit/tie on, but no shoes or socks.

        2) I'm sure they have their reasons, but not sure the Drew family did its son Larry II a favor by letting him quit the North Carolina team this late in the season. Quitting is a habit, a bad habit; this isn't a kid transferring for a better situation, though he undoubtedly will, this is a kid quitting a situation that became unpleasant for him. Its an immature decision. Right thing to do would've been to play out this season, then transfer.

        1) My Hall of Fame focus was on the great Marshall Faulk getting in, but its also news terrific that NFL Films' founder Ed Sabol will be inducted in August. Who has done more to promote the NFL than NFL Films? Very deserving honor, and its great that he's still alive (he's 95) to enjoy it.

Double dribble: Sunday's NBA betting preview
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Miami Heat (-11.5, 201.5)

Sunday’s showdown between LeBron James and Blake Griffin gives the Heat not only a chance to extend their winning streak to five games, but also to avenge a recent loss to the Clippers.

At the Staples Center on January 11, Los Angeles needed none of its seven points to cover the spread, upsetting Miami 111-105. The Clippers did their best impersonation of their opponent’s “Big 3,” as Eric Gordon poured in 26 points, Griffin went for 24 and Baron Davis added 20. Griffin also hauled in 14 rebounds while Davis dished out nine assists.

The real “Big 3” was not too shabby, itself. Dwyane Wade had 31 points, seven rebounds and five assists, LeBron put up 27, eight and six and Chris Bosh contributed 26 and 13. But the trio did not get much help. Mario Chalmers chipped in 12 points, but no other Miami player scored more than four. The Heat also allowed Los Angeles to shoot 50 percent (42 of 84) from the floor.

If Miami is out to redeem itself for last month’s performance against the Clippers, Griffin probably has redemption of his own in mind. In a 101-100 loss at Atlanta Friday, the rookie All-Star scored 19 and had 11 rebounds, but he made only eight of 18 shots and turned the ball over a game-high four times. His foul with 0.6 seconds left in the game led to a pair of game-winning free throws by Al Horford.

“It's one of those games where you just feel bad,” Griffin said afterward. “The way I played, I didn't really help my teammates tonight. I've got to do a better job.”

                          Player(s) of the Month

Griffin, however, is coming off a strong January that garnered him a nomination for Western Conference Player of the Month (won by Memphis’ Zach Randolph). Leading the Clippers to nine wins in 14 games, Griffin averaged 26 points, 13.4 rebounds, and 4.4 assists. He erupted for 47 points in a Jan. 17 win over Indiana, posted double-figures in all 14 outings, and scored fewer than 18 points only once.

LeBron, though, was even better for the Heat. He won Eastern Conference Player of the Month honors, averaging 30.6 ppg (best in the NBA), 8.4 rebounds, and 7.4 assists. Showing no signs of slowing down in February, LeBron torched Orlando with 51 points in a 104-100 road win Thursday.

                          Trending topics

The Clippers are 5-1 ATS in their last six against the Eastern Conference, but they are 1-4-1 ATS in their last six road games.

The Heat are 4-0 ATS in their last four overall.

The over is 8-2 in L.A.’s last 10 overall and 8-1-1 in its last 10 games. The over is 4-0 in Miami’s last four overall and 6-0 in its last six against the Western Conference.

In the head-to-head series between the two teams, the over is 12-2 in the last 14 and 7-0 in the last seven in Miami. The home team is 6-0 ATS in the last six.

Orlando Magic at Boston Celtics (-4.5, 192.5)

The 2010 Eastern Conference finalists will contest the rubber match of their regular-season series at the TD Garden Sunday afternoon.

Both teams have taken care of business at home this season. On Christmas Day, the Magic outscored Boston 29-15 in the fourth quarter to win 86-78 and cover the 2.5-point spread. Dwight Howard scored just six points, but five Orlando players reached double figures, led by Brandon Bass’ 21. Among the Celtics’ woes were 2-of-15 shooting by Nate Robinson and 3-of-13 shooting by Ray Allen.

Allen (and Howard, for that matter) picked it up in the next go-around on Jan. 17 in Boston. The savvy sharp shooter went for a team-high 26 points to lead six Celtics in double-figures. It was just enough to overcome Howard’s 33 points and the spread was pushed in a 109-106 Boston win.

                          No O’Neals, no problem?

Both of Boston’s O’Neals are out - Jermaine much longer than Shaq. Jermaine O’Neal, who had already missed 32 games this season, opted for arthroscopic knee surgery Friday and will be sidelined for another six to eight weeks.

Shaquille O’Neal also sat out Friday night’s 101-97 loss to the streaking Dallas Mavericks with a sore Achilles. That allowed Kendrick Perkins, recently back from his own physical problems (ACL), to make his first start of the season. Perkins, who averaged 22 minutes in five games as a reserve and played 32 minutes Friday, tallied season-highs in points (13) and rebounds (12).

“I’m happy with where I’m at right now,’’ noted Perkin, who is in line for another start with Shaq expected to miss Sunday’s clash. “I’m just trying to get out there and do my best for the team. Obviously I’d have liked to get the win more than anything.’’

Head coach Doc Rivers, though, is going to be cautious with Perkins. “We don’t want to just throw him in there,” Rivers explained. “We want him to ease his way back. We’ll just have to play someone else. Baby (Glen Davis) will play some five at times and so will Semih (Erden), and we’ll just do it that way.’’

                          Trending topics

The Magic are 1-4 ATS in their last five overall and 0-4-1 ATS in their last five against teams with winning SU records.

The Celtics are 1-4-1 ATS in their last six against the Eastern Conference.

The over is 5-1 in Orlando’s last six road games and 9-1 in Boston’s last 10 home games.

The home team is 3-0-1 ATS in the last four meetings between the two teams and the Magic are 3-1-1 ATS in their last five trips to Boston.

                            NBA

Los Angeles Clippers at Miami Heat (-11.5, 203)

The Clipper Bandwagon has a dark secret. The team not only is in the midst of a brutal stretch of road games, but also is tied for the second-fewest road wins in the NBA at three.

“We have so many young guys, and they’re just learning about how tough it is on the road,” guard Baron Davis said. “They’ve never played in Milwaukee, never played in Chicago or Portland or Denver. So everything is new to them.”

The biggest problem for the Clippers has been playing defense away from Staples Center. The Clips are allowing a horrid 101.5 points per game on the road. Overall, opponents have topped the century mark three times in the team’s past four away tilts as the over is 8-1-1 in the team’s past 10 road contests.

And the Heat love putting on a show at home. Miami has seen the over go 6-2-1 in the team’s past nine home games. The team also has a day of rest coming after a comfortable, double-digit win over the Bobcats on Friday.

It seems to be a different star every night now for the Heat. On Thursday, LeBron James went for 51 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in a 104-100 win over the Magic. Against Charlotte, Dwyane Wade blew up for 22 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.

“We’re playing great basketball right now,” James said. “To feel whole, finally, it’s good for our team. Everyone is feeling confident that they can make a contribution to our team.”

                            Pick: Over

                            NCAAB

Michigan State Spartans at Wisconsin Badgers (-9, 124.5)

It’s hard to put into perspective just how bad the Spartans are playing right now.

Michigan State is 0-8 ATS in its past eight games, 0-8 ATS in its past eight Big 10 games and not surprisingly is a wretched 3-5 SU over that span. The team has struggled to play consistent defense and each of its past three wins have come in overtime.

For the season, the Spartans are letting opponents shoot an absurd 37.4 percent from beyond the arc and are allowing a terrible 67.7 points per game. And the team’s rotation is in shambles.

Chris Allen was kicked off the team this summer and stud sixth man Korie Lucious was suspended for the season last month. Additionally, senior Durrell Summers been inconsistent on both ends of the floor, forward Derrick Nix took a leave of absence early in the season and still hasn’t played himself into shape and freshman Russell Byrd suffered a broken foot.

"I don't feel any regrets with anybody who's left this program because nobody ever leaves under one, two or three chances," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. "The regret is that guys didn't grow up and understand what they had to do.”

For that rag-tag group to upset the Badgers 64-61 in overtime in East Lansing earlier this year, Wisconsin had one of its worst late-game collapses in the past decade when it gave up a nine-point lead with 2:42 remaining.

The Badgers will close the game out this time.

                            Pick: Wisconsin

Ohio State at Minnesota: What bettors need to know
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ohio State Buckeyes at Minnesota Golden Gophers (+6, 136)

                              THE STORY
: Ohio State, the unanimous No. 1 team in the country, takes its perfect record to Minnesota on Sunday. The Buckeyes have a virtual lock on the Big Ten title even though eight conference games remain. Minnesota played 30 listless minutes at Indiana on Wednesday, and a late rally couldn't save the No. 20 Gophers from a 60-57 loss. The performance didn't please coach Tubby Smith, who questioned his team's effort and intensity.

                              TV: ESPN

ODDS: Oddsmakers opened the Buckeyes as 6-point road favorites, which has come down to 5.5 at some markets. The total is set at 136 points.

ABOUT OHIO STATE (23-0, 10-0 Big Ten, 10-10 ATS): Sometimes you get the idea the Buckeyes are entertaining themselves. Ohio State lets the opponent hang around and think it actually has a chance to win before it shows everyone who's No. 1. The Buckeyes have done that several times, most recently in Wednesday's 62-53 victory over Michigan. Ohio State trailed until early in the second half before taking control. Freshman Jared Sullinger had 19 points and 15 rebounds. Eight of Ohio State's last nine games have been decided by five points or less as the Buckeyes gain more experience in close games.

ABOUT MINNESOTA (16-6, 5-5, 10-12 ATS): This isn't a good time to be a Gopher. Minnesota has lost two in a row and is 1-2 since point guard Al Nolen went down with a broken foot. After beating Northwestern in their first game without Nolen, the Gophers lost to Purdue. It looked like a trip to Assembly Hall to play a short-handed Indiana team would cure their problems, but it had just the opposite effect. Minnesota came out flat, trailed by 11 at halftime and was down 50-34 with just under 10 minutes to play. The Gophers cut the lead to one, but their rally fell short when Blake Hoffarber missed a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.

WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Minnesota forward Trevor Mbakwe matched his season-low with seven points against Indiana. Ohio State's David Lighty and Jon Diebler have been knocking down shots all season, but they combined to shoot 5 of 16 against Michigan.

KEY STATISTIC: Ohio State has won 14 consecutive games in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes haven't lost in conference play since dropping a 60-57 decision to Purdue on Feb. 17.

HISTORY: One of Ohio State's close calls came in Columbus when they hung on for a 67-64 victory over the Gophers on Jan. 9. Minnesota rallied from a 15-point deficit in the second half, but Austin Hollins missed a 3-pointer with two seconds left. Lighty led the Buckeyes with 19 points while Jared Sullinger had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Mbakwe had 16 and 12 rebounds for Minnesota. The Gophers defeated the Buckeyes 73-62 at Williams Arena last season.

LOOKING AHEAD: Ohio State is off until Feb. 12 when it travels to Wisconsin. Minnesota hosts Illinois on Thursday.

LAST WORD: Following the loss to Indiana, Hoffarber said the Gophers have to come out like they're playing the No. 1 team in the country every night. Well, here's their chance.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Favorite is 9-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
                              * Home team is 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.
                              * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Minnesota.
                              * Under is 10-4 in the last 14 meetings.
