New York Rangers at Montreal Canadiens

At long last, a little controversy brewing in New York now that the Rangers are slumping. That’s familiar in their city, but not necessarily with this team. Will they respond north of the border?

            Calling out The King

The Rangers haven’t won since the All-Star break ended (0-2), and have lost three straight dating back to last Tuesday.

Perhaps taking the slump as an opportunity to fire up his All-Star goaltender, head coach John Tortorella on Thursday blamed a 3-2 loss to New Jersey on Henrik Lundqvist.

“I need to be honest with the hockey club and everyone else. The goaltending hasn't been good enough,” he said. "Hank has to be our guy and he will be our guy, but he hasn't been the last few games."

Lundqvist was pulled against the Devils, so he should be rested and ready for the Canadiens. That said, Tortorella always has the option of sitting him, though that is unlikely on Canada’s national stage versus the Canadiens.

            Textbook Canadiens hockey

Montreal, on the other hand, has been hot since the All-Star break, engineering two victories in two nights that clearly represented the Canadiens’ winning formula.

Tight defense, timely goal scoring and solid play from Carey Price and Alex Auld in net.

In fact, Price and Auld combined for 60 saves in 24 hours, as the Canadiens defeated the Capitals and Panthers by the same score of 3-2.

            The seeding shuffle

Play began Friday with Montreal in the sixth seed of the Eastern Conference. But the Canadiens, with 63 points, were just one point behind Washington for the No. 5 seed, which is key. Corralling the No. 5 means Montreal wouldn’t have to face a division winner in the first round.

Meanwhile, the Rangers’ skid had them a point behind Montreal as pucks dropped Friday. Clearly, they are still in the mix for one of the top five spots, but all six teams ahead of them had two games in hand on the Broadway Blueshirts.

Facing his former team in a funk

Maybe lining up against some familiar faces will get Montreal forward Scott Gomez in gear. Because it seems that nothing else will.

The former Ranger and Devil has just six goals and 26 points this season for the Canadiens, and has a minus-10 plus/minus rating. He has just one point in his last four games - an assist versus Anaheim on Jan. 22 - and has four penalty minutes in that stretch.

The good news is that he’s still shooting. In that same four-game run, he has 14 shots on goal.

            History

These two combined on a dandy at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 15, in which 74 shots were fired, before the Canadiens escaped with a 3-2 win.

The Canadiens, in fact, have won seven of the last 10 matchups in this series, including four in a row.

And while you may think this Original Six clash usually leans toward unders, it’s not always the case. The over is on a 6-3-1 stretch, though in the last three installments, the under is 2-0-1.

Los Angeles Kings at Calgary Flames

Two teams on the outside of the postseason picture collide in Calgary, searching for two precious points. The Flames, are supposed to be down in the standings, though they are hot. The Kings? Not so much. Either way, it’s a battle of desperation.

            Flames showing some fight

Thursday’s 4-2 victory in Atlanta was the Flames’ sixth in a row and second straight on the road.

It’s a run that is impressive to say the least, and is probably the only thing keeping the team afloat these days in the Western Conference playoff chase.

They are beating playoff-caliber teams, Vancouver, Dallas, Nashville among them, and they are re-energizing their fan base, something that was needed.

            Making a second-half charge

The Kings have been on a roll lately, as well, winning four of the last five games and corralling at least one point in all five.

What’s surprising is that the run really hasn’t showed in the standings. Play began Friday night with Los Angeles, Calgary and Chicago all tied with 58 points - one behind the No. 8 tenant, Phoenix.

A lot was expected from Los Angeles this season, after it returned to the playoffs last year. Perhaps the missing ingredient is Ilya Kovalchuk, who flirted with the Kings only to remain with the Devils in the summer.

            Only Olli

So much was made this offseason of Calgary bringing back Olli Jokinen just a few months after trading him away. The thought process among critical Flames fans was that the team found someone to dump him in on, the Rangers, so why take him back?

Well, perhaps they were right. In 50 games, Jokinen has just nine goals and is a minus-14 on a team that needs to tighten up defensively.

He hasn’t scored in the last five games and hasn’t registered more than three shots on net in a single game since Jan. 19.

            All-Star hangover for Anze?

Maybe Kings forward Anze Kopitar had a little too much fun last weekend in Raleigh, N.C., as he took part in All-Star Weekend festivities. He’s been a little behind the play since returning.

In a back-to-back swing versus Minnesota and Edmonton this week, he registered just one point, an assist, and just four shots on goal. And what might be more alarming is his hits total.

Everyone goes through scoring slumps, but Kopitar’s game includes getting physical, too. In the last five games prior to the break, he had 12 hits.

            In the two since: None.

            History

Perhaps the Kings are just the team Calgary wants to see, as it tries to push the winning streak forward. After all, the Flames have won eight of the last 10 meetings in this series and three of the last four.

However, Los Angeles escaped with a 2-1 victory on Dec. 9, in the last installment.

If you’re looking for a lean on the total, think under. The last five games in this series have gone under and seven of the last eight, as well.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at Buffalo Sabres (-165, 5.5)

The Toronto Maple Leafs would rather see pretty much any other team on their schedule other than the Buffalo Sabres. And who can blame them? Buffalo has won nine of the past 10 meetings, including a pair of victories this season before Christmas.

This time Buffalo also has a new weapon to throw out against Toronto. Rookie forward Paul Byron has been impressive, netting a goal and an assist in his first two games in the NHL before spending the All-Star break in the AHL to keep him in game-shape. With his recall earlier this week, coach Lindy Ruff hopes to recapture some of the magic that Byron and his linemates had in an earlier matchup with Ottawa.

Byron will center a line featuring left wing Tyler Ennis and right wing Drew Stafford. Even though the group is diminutive in size, their speed and skating make them a pesky united to handle.

"They're going to have to use their speed and creativity," Ruff said. "I don't think there's any secret they're not going to outmuscle anybody. At the same time, if you can't catch them it's going to be hard to play with them.

"That line in Ottawa gave us real good energy. It was probably our best line, and we'd like to see if they can give us some offense."

              Pick: Buffalo

Los Angeles Kings at Calgary Flames (-125, 5)

No one can complain that the Flames are playing boring hockey. By playing an up-tempo, high-risk style of play, the Flames have opened themselves up to counter attacks and surrendering undisciplined goals. But so far, the results have been nothing but wins and lots of pucks in the opposition’s net.

"You look at our skating the last few games. Does anybody look like he doesn't have the juice anymore?" Winger Alex Tanguay said. "We're skating good. I'm 31 and I think I'm skating better than I have the last three or four years."

Calgary has won six straight and eight of 10 games overall. During its winning streak, the Flames are averaging 4.2 goals per game – way up from the 2.7 goals per game the team was averaging before it began to turn its season around.

"It's up to us and we haven't done it up until lately," defenseman Cory Sarich said. "I just want to continue and keep it going because it's way more enjoyable."
Meantime, the Kings have won four of five, but are a mere 5-5 in their last 10 games overall. The team continues to struggle to score goals and has netted more than two goals just four times over that span.

              Pick: Flames
