    Daily Sports Roundup: February 4

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Mavericks head east to Boston for a game against the Celtics, while Harvard meets Princeton, and the Lightning host the Capitals.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has a busy night of 12 games on tap for Friday, with Miami at Charlotte, Minnesota at Toronto, Orlando at Washington, Portland at Indiana, New York at Philadelphia, the Clippers at Atlanta, New Jersey at Detroit, Cleveland at Memphis, Oklahoma City at Phoenix, San Antonio at Sacramento, Utah at Denver, and Dallas at Boston. The Celtics are coming off a 95-90 win in Sacramento in their last game on Tuesday night to sit at 37-11 SU and 23-23-2 ATS on the season, but they fell 89-87 on the road against the Mavericks as a 3-5-point underdog when the teams met back on November 8. Dirk Nowitzki led the way for Dallas with 25 points that night, while Jason Terry had 17 points off the bench. Paul Pierce scored 24 points for Boston in that defeat.

The Ivy League then plays its usual Friday games on the college hoops schedule, with Cornell at Yale, Dartmouth at Pennsylvania, Columbia at Brown, and Harvard at Princeton. The Crimson (15-3 SU, 7-2 ATS) have won eight straight games, beating Cornell 78-57 at home last time out; Keith Wright tossed in 21 points for Harvard in that victory. The Tigers (14-4 SU, 7-3 ATS) carry a four-game winning streak into Friday's matchup, getting past Yale 67-63 in their most recent contest; Douglas Davis had 18 points for Princeton. Harvard fell 54-51 to Princeton when the teams played last March.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are six games on the NHL's schedule for Friday, with Florida at New Jersey, Buffalo at Pittsburgh, Columbus at Detroit, Edmonton at St. Louis, Chicago at Vancouver, and Washington at Tampa Bay. The Capitals are on a three-game losing streak, falling 3-2 in a shootout to the Canadiens in their last game on Tuesday. The Lightning, meanwhile, have picked up the win in each of their past six contests, blanking the Flyers 4-0 in their last game on Tuesday behind 38 saves from Dwayne Roloson. The Bolts and Caps have split their season series 2-2 so far, with Tampa Bay winning the most recent encounter 3-0 at home on January 12. Roloson made 23 saves for the shutout for the Lightning that day, and Semyon Varlamov made 35 stops for Washington.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

      Line to watch

Cleveland at Memphis (-13.5, 204.5): This total opened at 202.5 at some books, and has risen two points. The over is 10-1 in the Cavs’ last 11 Friday games.

      Who’s hot?

Vancouver, which hosts Chicago, has won four straight by a combined score of 19-3. And the Canucks are 17-3-1-4 at home.

      Who’s not?

The Raptors, who host Minnesota, are on a 1-7 ATS skid and have lost 13 in a row straight up.

      Injury not to be overlooked

Thabo Sefolosha – Oklahoma City’s defensive stopper is questionable for the track meet at Phoenix after missing three straight with a sprained knee. Thunder center Nenad Krstic (7.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg) also is questionable after spraining his right foot in Wednesday’s win over the Hornets.

      Game of the day

Dallas Mavericks at Boston Celtics (-6.5, 190.5)

      Notable quotable

“You want to be playing great at the end of the season and give yourself a shot, have a little confidence going in. It’s kind of like in ‘07 for us, we went in with great confidence, felt we were playing well, I think they did the same thing.’’ – New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning to the New York Post, comparing the No. 6-seeded Packers to his Super Bowl-winning team.

      Tips and notes

-- The Knicks get a key cog back Friday in Philadelphia when Wilson Chandler (16.8 ppg, 6.1 rpg) returns. The 6-8 forward missed the past three games with calf and ankle injuries. “I just had to make sure it’s 100 percent before I got back on the court,” Chandler told ESPNNewYork.com.

-- Steelers 24, Packers 20. At least that’s the prediction from EA Sports’ “Madden” simulation. The video game has picked the winner in six of the last seven Super Bowls. For what it’s worth, “Madden” projects Mike Wallace as MVP with five catches for 111 yards and a touchdown.

-- Siena senior guard Clarence Jackson (15.9 ppg) called his status “up in the air” for Friday’s home game against Manhattan. He’s dealt with two sprained ankles that have forced him to miss nine games this season. Right now it’s the left ankle that’s bothering him. If he does play, Jackson will come off the bench.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best basketball bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Philadelphia 76ers (-3.5, 209)

Sixers point guard Jrue Holiday must be salivating with the Knicks coming to town. Holiday had his first career triple-double in a win over the Nets earlier this week, finishing with 11 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

"I guess it just kind of came to me," Holiday said of the triple-double. "Every loose ball, every rebound, it just kind of came to me. You saw Andre (Iguodala) and Spencer (Hawes), you saw them running. If they're running, I'm going to pass it to them."

With up-tempo New York visiting, he should have plenty of teammates running down the floor to feed for open looks, and lots of rebounds to grab off the rim. And it’s not like Knicks lead guard Raymond Felton will slow him down. The past 10 games, Felton has failed to reach his scoring average eight times and his assist average six times as he continues to battle a sore hand. No surprise, the team is a mere 3-7 SU and just 4-5-1 ATS during that span.

"His hand is still bothering him, swollen up pretty good," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said. "But I just don't think it makes a difference. Obviously, it would be nice to hit all his shots, but we have to be a little bit more aggressive on the defensive end and get into people and want it a little bit more than them."

Right now, Holiday wants it most.

The Knicks should get a boost from the return of forward Wilson Chandler (16.8 ppg, 6.1 rpg), but it remains to be seen how effective he'll be after missing three games with calf and ankle ailments.

        Pick: Philadelphia

        NCAAB

Iona Gaels at Fairfield Stags (-3.5, 130)

Late last month, this seemed like a matchup to determine which team would win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season title. But the Gaels have failed to hold up their end.

Iona (13-9, 7-4) has dropped three straight by a combined seven points – each game by no more than a bucket. Those setbacks to Loyola, Manhattan and Canisius have given the Stags a golden opportunity to take care of business at home.

And Fairfield (17-4, 10-1) doesn’t give away games at Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard. Even though the facility is off campus, the Stags are 9-2 SU and ATS in their past 11 home games. They have won five straight overall and 15 of their past 16.

One of the biggest keys has been the play of stud freshman Maurice Barrow. In a blowout win over Canisius, he posted 14 points and 12 rebounds in a career-high 38 minutes for his third double-double.

"Mo has been the silent assassin," Fairfield coach Ed Cooley said. "Everybody else is getting a lot of the pub, but I know what I am getting exactly out of Mo Barrow every night. He's close to a double-double in just about every MAAC game."

The 11 busloads of Fairfield students scheduled to make the trip to Harbor Yard should get to see him do it again.

        Pick: Fairfield

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffalo Sabres at Pittsburgh Penguins (-145, 5.5)

It’s not the return of Sidney Crosby, but the Penguins got some great news this week. Center Evgeni Malkin is expected to return from a sinus infection that has kept him sidelined the past several days. And that’s bad news for the Buffalo Sabres.

"That's part of playing in the NHL -- you're rarely at 100 percent," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. "Dealing with that and playing your best given those circumstances is a challenge a lot of players go through on a yearly basis, and that's been a challenge for Geno."

Malkin, an MVP candidate, has 15 goals and 22 assists in just 40 games. And he has been an absolute Buffalo killer since 2008. Over his past nine games against the Sabres, he has notched 13 assists and added a goal to pace the Penguins.

This season the Sabres haven’t been able to keep up with Malkin or the Penguins. Buffalo is 0-2 against Pittsburgh this season, dropping the first matchup 1-0 before getting blasted in December, 5-2.

“We need a lot of different people to produce for us. We need the young guys, we need the old guys, we need defensemen getting on the scoresheet. It’s going to take a lot to get to where we want to go,” Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff said.

The Sabres will get somewhere eventually, but they won’t want to be in Pittsburgh Friday.

          Pick: Pittsburgh

Washington Capitals at Tampa Bay Lightning (-125, 5.5)

The Capitals might soon petition the league to make all their power plays 6-on-4 situations, to actually have a chance to score.

Washington has lost three straight games due to a woeful power play that has converted just one of eight chances over that span. Not surprisingly, the team lost each of those games by a single goal.

Overall, the Capitals have lost seven of their past 10 games. Their stats up a man over that time? Two for their past 22. There is a reason the unit is ranked 19th in the league and converts a mere 17.4 percent of its chances.

Don’t expect the Lightning to be giving away any freebies, either. Tampa Bay is killing off 84.2 percent of its opponents chances – the 8th-best mark in the league – and has been even better during its six-game win streak. During that time, the Lightning has killed off 16 straight chances and 20 of 21 opportunities.

"Your goaltender has to be your best penalty killer," Tampa Bay center Nate Thompson said. "But also lots of communication, good clears, shot blocking, sticks in (shooting) lanes."

The teams have split four meetings this season. The predominant trend? Washington has three power play goals in their two wins, none in the two losses.

And the way Tampa Bay is playing shorthanded, don’t expect Washington to leave St. Pete Times Forum with a power play goal – or a win.

          Pick: Tampa Bay

                Friday's six-pack

-- Antonio McDyess tipped in a missed shot at the buzzer, giving the Spurs a dramatic win at Staples Center, their 12th win in last 14 games.

-- Lebron James scored 51 points in Orlando, 23 in first half, as Miami beat the Magic, in a game Wade missed most of with a sore back.

-- Oregon State upset Washington 68-56, after losing by 31 at Seattle in season's first meeting. Big win for Craig Robinson.

-- How does Washington State beat Washington Sunday night, then go to Eugene and lose by 26 at Oregon? It makes no sense.

-- Charleston beat Wofford by 25 in meeting of two of best teams in the Southern Conference. Bobby Cremins' Cougars are now 9-2 in SoCon.

-- Butler lost 62-60 at Youngstown State, a hideous loss for Bulldogs, who aren't going to NCAAs unless they win the Horizon tournament.

                ***************************

Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

                13) Mainstream media is subtly campaigning against the NFL’s proposed 18-game schedule; not sure if they don’t want to work an extra two weeks or what, but they’ve been playing 18 games in the CFL for years, and no one seems the worse for wear. I’m strongly in favor of it, but no one asked me. I’m thinking most fans and all gamblers would love two more weeks of regular season NFL.

                12) Good news for Florida State is that they had the #1 recruiting class this week, according to recruiting gurus who analyze this stuff. Seminoles took advantage of Gators/Hurricanes making coaching changes after the season to stockpile highly-rated talent.

                11) Bad news for Florida State is that the recruiting services don’t always know what they’re talking about. The two QBs starting in Super Bowl Sunday received a combined one scholarship offer coming out of high school. Aaron Rodgers went to a junior college, for Pete’s sake. Big Ben went to Miami, Ohio. They’ve both turned out pretty well.

                10) Only 65 of the 106 players on Super Bowl rosters played in the six BCS conferences. Pro football players come from all over the map.

                9) The Pro Bowl got higher TV ratings than Game 3 of the World Series. Seriously. If the NFL has a work stoppage, both sides are idiotic.

                8) Bengals hired Jay Gruden as offensive coordinator; will be interesting if Cincinnati draws a game on Monday Night Football next season; the Gruden brothers are pretty tight.

                7) There are only 21 receivers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

                6) Portland Trailblazers have had 139 consecutive home sellouts; that’s over three years’ worth.

                5) Funny how Indiana Pacers canned Jim O’Brien when they had games with Toronto/Cleveland on tap; nothing like getting the new guy a couple of easy wins to start out with. Larry Bird needs this coach to succeed, because the next time the Pacers fire someone, it won’t be the coach.

                4) Clippers are 1-8 vs spread at home when the spread is 2 or less points; they’re 14-6 at home if the spread is more than 2 points.

                3) Philly 76ers are 9-5 in their last 14 games, as Doug Collins works his usual first-year magic; Sixers are 11-6 vs spread when favored, so they’re beating the teams they’re supposed to beat, and a few others to boot.

                2) I’m tired of hearing TV commentators shill for the Big East; not every team in the league is great. DePaul is 21-74 in Big East games, 1-44 in its last 45; South Florida is 22-74. Since 2004, St John’s is 38-90 and even with nine seniors playing this year, they’re only 5-5. These are not strong programs. Just admit it. It’s a strong league from 1-10, but the bottom six are very shaky, just like the bottom of every league is shaky.

                1) 70 mph winds in Chicago ripped off part of the roof at Wrigley Field this week. At least no one can blame Steve Bartman for the damage.
