    Daily Sports Roundup: February 1

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Stars host the Canucks as the NHL returns to the ice, while Purdue battles with Wisconsin, and the Blazers play host to the Spurs.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are just four games on the NBA schedule for Tuesday, with Washington at New Orleans, Boston at Sacramento, Houston at the Lakers, and San Antonio at Portland. The Spurs (40-7 SU, 28-17-2 ATS) ride a three-game winning streak into Tuesday's contest, beating Houston 108-95 at home in their last game on Saturday. Manu Ginobili led the way with 22 points for San Antonio that day, while DeJuan Blair had 14 points and 12 rebounds. The Trail Blazers (25-22 SU, 22-22-3 ATS) were tagged with a loss in each of their last two games, falling 88-78 at home to Boston last time out. LaMarcus Aldridge had a team-high 17 points for Portland that day. The Spurs are 1-0 versus the Blazers this year, winning 95-78 as a 7.5-point favorite at home back on December 12.

As well, games involving ranked teams on the college hoops schedule for Tuesday include No. 10 Kentucky at Mississippi, No. 23 North Carolina at Boston College, No. 2 Kansas at Texas Tech, No. 23 Vanderbilt at Florida, and No. 11 Purdue at No. 19 Wisconsin. The Boilermakers (18-4 SU, 12-6 ATS) are coming off a 73-61 win over Minnesota, with JaJuan Johnson pouring in 24 points for Purdue in that contest. The Badgers (15-5 SU, 10-6 ATS) fell 56-52 to Penn State in their most recent game, as Jon Leuer led Wisconsin with 18 points. Purdue and Wisconsin last played back on January 28, 2010, with the Boilermakers winning 60-57.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL returns from its All-Star Break on Tuesday with 13 games: Boston at Carolina, Chicago at Columbus, Ottawa at New Jersey, the Islanders at Atlanta, Florida at Toronto, Montreal at Washington, Pittsburgh at the Rangers, Philadelphia at Tampa Bay, Colorado at St. Louis, Calgary at Nashville, Los Angeles at Minnesota, Phoenix at San Jose, and Vancouver at Dallas. The 31-10-9 Canucks won their last two games before the break and hold down first place in the Northwest Division with 71 points. The 30-15-5 Stars are coming off a 3-1 home victory over Edmonton, and they're tops in the Pacific Division standings with 65 points. Vancouver is 2-0 versus Dallas so far this year.

Bettors' best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Andrew Bynum, Los Angeles Lakers – Bynum missed part of the third quarter on Sunday with a sore left knee and then skipped practice on Monday. While it definitely looks like the knee is bothering him significantly as he tries to get up and down the floor lately, coach Phil Jackson says Bynum wants to play Tuesday against Houston. Bynum averages 11.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

      Number to remember

0 – Number of wins the Illinois Fighting Illini have when scoring fewer than 60 points. The Illini have struggled at the offensive end of the floor recently, averaging only 61.8 points over their last five – down from 73.6 points per game on the season. Illinois dropped a 52-49 decision at Indiana as a 4-point favorite last week.

      Key trends

NHL: The New York Islanders have lost five of their last six games.

NHL: The Ottawa Senators have lost eight of their last nine contests overall.

NHL: The under is 39-14-1 in Washington’s last 54 games.

NHL: Pittsburgh has won nine of its last 12 meetings with the New York Rangers.

NBA: Washington has covered the number four times in its last 16 contests.

NBA: San Antonio is riding a 7-2-1 run ATS and has played under in 10 of the club’s last 12 games.

NCAAB: Purdue has covered in seven of its last nine meetings with Wisconsin.

NCAAB: Illinois has dropped four of its last five against the spread.

      Notes and tips

The Florida Gators feel that their SEC title hopes may come down to their next two games, both at home. The No. 23 Gators, who sit atop the SEC at 5-2 straight up, host No. 24 Vanderbilt Tuesday before Kentucky comes to town Saturday night. One area of concern for Florida is its free-throw shooting. The Gators hit just 65.2 of their attempts from the charity stripe and senior center Vernon Macklin – the team’s third-leading scorer – is shooting only 40 percent from the line.

The NBA’s second-best 3-point shooter will accompany the San Antonio Spurs on the club’s upcoming three-game road trip. Matt Bonner, who is hitting 50.4 percent of his trey attempts this season, is getting closer to coming back from a bone marrow edema in his right knee that stems from a collision on Jan. 12. He has been shooting more at practice recently, though he’s probably doubtful for Tuesday’s game against Portland. The Spurs head into the game riding a franchise-best 40-7 SU start.

The Pittsburgh Penguins were hoping to have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin back after the All-Star break, but Pens bettors are going to have to wait a little longer. Crosby has been cleared for light workouts as he recovers from a concussion though it’s not likely we’ll see him suiting up anytime soon. The status of Malkin’s knee is a bit more encouraging. He participated in the team’s practice on Monday and while he won’t play Tuesday, he seems to be making some progress.

        Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the better matchups for Bracketbuster Saturday, which is in three weeks, on February 19........
-- VCU @ Wichita State-- Continuing CAA-MVC rivalry in this event.

-- Hofstra @ Wright State- Big doings at the Nutter Center.

-- Cleveland State @ Old Dominion-- Two stellar defensive clubs.

-- George Mason @ Northern Iowa-- UNI won its last seven games.

-- Montana @ Long Beach State- Griz already won at UCLA.

-- Utah State @ St Mary's-- Best matchup of the weekend.

        **********************************

Tuesday's List of 13: Random stuff on a snowy day.......

Wednesday is National Signing Day in college football; if you don’t think it’s a huge day, check out these numbers we saw on espn.com over the weekend…….

        13) LSU turned a $43.25M profit on football in 2009; that’s million, with an M. Tigers might not be as good as Alabama since Tide hired Nick Saban, but LSU did make more money. Bama’s profit on college pigskin for 2009 was a measly $40.76M.

        12) Alabama spent $31.2M on football in ’09; Boise State spent a total of $25.1M ……on its entire athletic department.

        11) Ohio State turned a profit of $32.85M on football, which should be totally impressive, but it pales in comparison with their SEC rivals.

So now you know why Wednesday is such a big deal; ton of money for the teams who win consistently.........players are the reason you win.

        Elsewhere in the world………
        10) Big league pitcher Justin Duchscherer missed a lot of time with the A’s because he has an oft-injured elbow- he has suffered from depression; not sure signing with the Orioles is going to make him more cheerful, though it will get him closer to his son, who lives in New Jersey. Signing with the Nationals might’ve been a better move. They were interested.

        9) The top 25 college basketball teams combined to go 22-20 SU last week. Just seems to me like the overall quality of play is down. Teams, even some of the best teams, have wild swings in performance from one game to the next. Hard to figure.

        8) Titans are going to try and trade Vince Young, who is owed a $4.25M bonus 10 days after a new CBA is signed. Doubt they’ll get anything good for him; someone might take a shot with a low draft pick.

        7) Tennessee Titans’ coaching job is open, with no franchise QB (Kerry Collins is current starter) and a wackjob owner in his 80’s; they’re going to get a head coach who is eager but underqualified.

        6) You don’t think St Louis is a baseball town? KMOX is broadcasting 17 spring training games this spring. Speaking of which, I can’t freakin’ wait for those meaningless games to begin. Nothing like the sight of a boxscore to take the chill of winter away.

        5) Was encouraged to read an article in the San Jose Bee basically mocking baseball Giants for still claiming San Jose as their own territory, blocking the A’s from moving there. Greedy bastards.

        4) Wednesday-Friday are the big practice days for Steelers-Packers; high temps in Dallas for those three days is expected to be 38.

        3) Tickets for Super Bowl I, the prime tickets, went for $12.

        2) I turned Pro Bowl on for a second Sunday night, saw Steven Jackson go on field for special teams, damn near had a heart attack, then realized it’s the Pro Bowl, so nothing bad was going to happen. Then I quickly turned to another channel.

        1) This is only fourth time since 1990 neither #1 seed made it to Super Bowl; last time was two years ago, when Steelers beat Arizona. AFC won two of previous three games, with margin of victories of 4-7-35 points.

                            NBA

Houston Rockets at Los Angeles Lakers (-8.5, 207)

Derek Fisher wants no part of Houston’s guards. In two games against the Rockets this season, the Lakers have gone 1-1, but Fisher was destroyed by Kyle Lowry, Aaron Brooks and Kevin Martin.

“I am not overly concerned about myself,” Fisher said. “This is a team game.”

In the team’s first meeting, a 112-110 Lakers win that saw the Rockets cover (+6.5), Fisher went a mere 1-of-7 from the floor for 2 points as he finished minus-8. However, Brooks finished 7-of-16 from the field for 24 points and Martin was 8-for-17 for 26 and the duo went 13-of-13 from the free-throw line. In the second meeting, a 109-99 win by the Rockets that again saw them cover (+5.5), Fisher was 2-of-9 from the field for five points and a putrid minus-13.

Again, Fisher was torched. Martin was 6-for-17 from the field for 22 points and Lowry, filling in for an injured Brooks, had 10 assists and 8 points.

Their ability to get past Fisher and the Lakers other guards has allowed them to make up for a lack of talent in the paint. Despite Los Angeles having a stronger frontcourt, the Lakers have outscored the Rockets just 88-84 in the paint in two games.

"We're an inconsistent team on defense right now," Lakers forward Lamar Odom said. "We have to get back at practice and keep working on it."

                            Pick: Houston

                            NCAAB

North Carolina Tar Heels at Boston College Eagles (2.5)

The Tar Heels are starting to peak during conference play thanks to star freshman Harrison Barnes. And the Eagles are taking a step back as standout senior guard Reggie Jackson can’t even get off the bench.

North Carolina has gone 8-2 SU and 5-4 ATS over its past 10 games, posting victories over Virginia, Virginia Tech and Miami. Over that stretch, Barnes has cracked double-figures eight times and is averaging 12.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game this year.

“He’s a gifted young man who’s been wanting to break out,” North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. “I really did feel this: once we got into ACC play you have to raise it a level. I had a hunch that he might play better because he’s gone through all those other experiences, and he’s the kind of young man who learns from those things.”

Meantime, Jackson, second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in points (18.5) and assists (5) per game, was benched at the start of the first and second halves of an 84-68 loss to Duke. And don’t expect it to change anytime soon as coach Steve Donahue gave a cryptic answer when asked about his star riding the pine.

“(I’m) trying to build a program, and practice matters,” the first-year coach said. “Kids who practice well get rewarded with playing time. Dallas Elmore has done a very good job and so has Corey (Raji). I thought both of those guys deserved to start based on how well they’ve done in practice over the last couple of weeks.”

                            Pick: North Carolina
