    Daily Sports Roundup: January 31

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Heat get another visit from the Cavaliers down in Miami, while the Longhorns head to Reed Arena for a matchup with rival Texas A&M.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up seven games on Monday night, with Toronto at Indiana, Denver at New Jersey, Orlando at Memphis, Washington at Dallas, Charlotte at Utah, Milwaukee at the Clippers, and Cleveland at Miami. LeBron James and the Heat have already thumped his old team twice this season, winning 118-90 as a 5.5-point road favorite on December 2 and 101-95 as a 16.5-point home favorite on December 15. James scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Heat in that last contest, while Dwyane Wade picked up a team-high 28 points and Chris Bosh added 16 points. Daniel Gibson led the way with 26 points for the Cavs that night, and Anderson Varejao had 18 points.

Over on the college hoops schedule there are two ranked matchups on the schedule for Monday, with No. 23 Louisville at No. 21 Georgetown, and No. 7 Texas at No. 13 Texas A&M. The 13th-ranked Aggies will be looking to bounce back from a 57-48 upset road loss to Nebraska in their last game on Saturday. Nathan Walkup had 13 points for Texas A&M in that contest, while Khris Middleton tossed in 12 points. The Longhorns rolled past No. 11 Missouri in their Saturday outing, winning 71-58 behind 16 points and 12 rebounds from Jordan Hamilton. Texas and Texas A&M have already met once this season, with the Longhorns grabbing an 81-60 home victory in their January 19 contest.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Deron Williams, Utah Jazz – Williams sat out Sunday’s game at Golden State with strained ligament in his wrist. It was the second straight game he missed with the injury and his status for Monday’s game against Charlotte. “It’s actually worse today,” Williams told reporters Sunday. “I did some shooting [Saturday] and I shouldn’t have done that because it’s a little more sore today.” Williams has just 22 total points over his last seven games.

      Key trends

NCAAB: Texas Longhorns have covered in 13 of their last 16 games overall, while the under has cashed in 10 of the club’s last 14.

NCAAB: Georgetown has covered the number in seven of their last 10 home games and is riding a 4-0 ATS run heading into Monday’s games with Louisville. The Hoyas are set as 5-point favorites.

NBA: Toronto has dropped 11 straight games outright, covering five times over that span.

NBA: Denver is riding a 4-0 straight up and against the spread streak heading into Monday’s game against New Jersey. The Nuggets have also covered in six of their last eight games against the Nets.

NBA: Memphis has covered in 20 of its last 28 games overall.

NBA: Washington takes another crack at winning its first road game of the year on Monday against the Dallas Mavericks. The Wizards are 0-23 on the road and have covered in just four of their last 16 games overall.

NBA: The Utah Jazz have played over in the total in seven of their last nine games.

NBA: Milwaukee has covered just three times over its last 14 meetings with the Los Angeles Clippers.

      Number to remember

7 – The Toronto Raptors have allowed at least 100 points in seven straight games and continue to struggle with the league’s 26th ranked scoring defense. The Raps give up more than 105 points per night on the year and are coming off an embarrassing 103-87 loss at Minnesota as 5-point underdogs. Toronto is currently set as 9-point underdogs for Monday’s game against the Pacers, who just fired coach Jim O’Brien. Assistant coach Frank Vogel will take over coaching duties for the time being.

      Notes and tips

Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade were back in the lineup for the Miami Heat on Sunday and had a big hand in downing Oklahoma City 108-103 as a 1-point underdog. Wade shrugged off his wrist injury and dropped 30 points in the win while Bosh chipped in with 20 and seven rebounds. LeBron James was happy to have the duo back, firing 13 assists, including a team record nine in the opening half. The Heat are back at it on Monday, hosting the Cavaliers.

Louisville is coming off a huge double overtime win over Connecticut on Saturday and are focusing on shutting down Austin Freeman in the same way they guarded Kemba Walker, forcing him to miss 16 of his 23 shots from the floor. "It's tough, but we didn't try to do it with one person," Louisville coach Rick Pitino said of keeping Walker in check. "We weren't afraid to trap him, make the rotations." That’s exactly what they want to do against Freeman, who is averaging better than 24 points a game over Georgetown’s four-game winning streak.

Texas has won nine straight games at home against Texas A&M and the Aggies know exactly what they’re up against when the two clubs square off again on Monday. This time the Aggies will be at home but Texas A&M needs to figure out a way to penetrate Texas’ nasty defense. "There's no secret how they play," Missouri guard Kim English said after Texas downed the Tigers 71-58 as a 7.5-point favorite over the weekend. "They are a physical team. They pressure the ball. Big, strong guys." The Longhorns have allowed more than 60 points only once over their current six-game winning streak, while the Aggies have cracked 70 points only twice over the last eight games.

        Monday's six-pack

According to Baseball America, six of Atlanta Braves' best minor league prospects.........

        29) Cory Harrilchak, OF-- .299 hitter in two minor league seasons, hit .333 in Arizona Fall League. Best defensive OF in Braves' system.

        10) JJ Hoover, P-- Has 22-13, 3.32 mark in 47 pro starts, going 3-1 in four AA starts LY. Should start season in AA, then move up to AAA.

        5) Craig Kimbrel, P-- Expected to take over as closer with retirement of Billy Wagner. Allowed nine hits in 21 major league IP last year.

        4) Mike Minor, P-- Lefty from Vanderbilt was 3-2, 5.98 in eight major league starts, allowing 53 hits in 41 IP; a rough debut.

        2) Freddie Freeman, 1B-- Hit .319 in AAA LY, then got 20 ABs in big leagues. Expected to win 1B job, push Prado out to left field.

        1) Julio Teheran, P-- Allowed 29 hits in 40 IP in AA Southern League LY; has career .232 BA against in his minor league career.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday........

        13) As Super Bowl week starts, interesting to note that Packers scored an average of 31.8 ppg in their last dozen games on artificial turf.

        12) If you're going to be in Dallas this week, you can go to Prince's Super Bowl part for only $1,500, and by the way, the cabbies are on strike.

        11) Michigan has a tough non-conference football schedule next year, with Alabama-Notre Dame-Air Force on the schedule. Hard to believe, but saw today that Air Force is getting a $1.2M guarantee to play in Ann Arbor.

        10) Major league All-Star Game is coming to Citi Field in 2013, which will be the worst Home Run Derby ever, unless they allow aluminum bats.

        9) Read today that majority owner of the Toronto Raptors is the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan; does this mean an NBA lockout could screw up the pension plan for Canadian teachers? Raptors pay Bryan Colangelo $4M a year to run a team that is headed for its third straight lottery. Hell, I could do that, and I would work for a million a year.

        8) Kobe Bryant had 41 points in Lakers' loss to Boston, but key statistic is this: He didn't have an assist. None. Zero. Lakers were +9 when Ron Artest was on the court, -22 when he was off. He was 1-10 from floor.

        7) Indiana Pacers fired coach Jim O'Brien, hired Frankie Vogel as interim coach; this is a guy who was a three-year starter at a D-III college, but he transferred to Kentucky to become a student manager, so he could hook up with the Rick Pitino coaching tree. Brilliant career move; his first job was as a video guy for Pitino's Boston Celtics. Now he's a head coach in the freakin' NBA. Of course, he's also coaching a bad team, but so what?

        6) There were three MAAC games Sunday; they were decided by a total of six points. Check out SportsCenter for kid from Manhattan banking in a 55-footer at the buzzer to win the Jaspers' game at Marist 60-59.

        5) Underdog is now 10-1 vs spread in Siena's MAAC games this season.

        4) Have to feel for Miami Hurricanes' hoop coach Frank Haith; Canes lost their last four games by a total of 11 points, and game before that, they won by a hoop. They were down 10 at half in Blacksburg Sunday, kept battling, but lost by four. They're close, but thats not good enough.

        3) Bruin defenseman Zdeno Chara, who is 6-9 or so, drilled a slap shot in the skills' competition Saturday night that was clocked at 105.9 mph; so you really want to be a goalie? Can't even imagine what it feels like to get hit with a puck shot that hard.

        2) Its not good for the PGA Tour that Eldrick Woods has apparently become JAG (Just Another Guy).

        1) If they made a golf movie and the main character's name was Johnny Vegas, you'd scoff at the movie, but this kid Jhonattan Vegas, who played college golf at Texas, looks like the real deal. He's from Venezuela, and he has played as well as anyone on Tour the last two weeks.

                            NBA

Charlotte Bobcats at Utah Jazz (N/A)

Jazz coach Jerry Sloan is known as one of the all-time greats, but not even the man who made the green John Deer hat famous has an answer for his team’s biggest problem: getting the team to play any defense when Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap are on the floor together.

Guards are tearing up Utah’s defenders because of the team’s atrocious pick-and-roll defense. Jefferson and Millsap both prefer to sag back off the pick and allow stud guard Deron Williams to chase the ball handlers. The results have been horrible.

Last year, the Jazz were second in fewest points allowed to a ball-handler off the pick and roll. This season, Utah is 18th in the league in giving up a shot or drawn foul to the attacking player.

Not only are Jefferson and Millsap hurting the team defensively, but forcing the bigger, more physical Williams (21 ppg, 9.4 apg, 3.6 rpg) to chase around the screen is tiring him out on offense. Over the team’s past five games, he is averaging about three points and one rebound below his season average while his shooting touch has dipped slightly by about 2 percent.

“We’ve had some games where you thought we’ve turned it around and figured it out,” Williams said, “but the games of late have led us to believe otherwise. … We just don’t have any confidence as a team right now, at either end of the court.”

                            Pick: Charlotte

                            NCAAB

Texas Longhorns at Texas A&M Aggies (1.5, 129)

The Aggies have done three things better than almost every team they have faced this season – draw fouls, shoot free throws and rebound. But the Aggies struggled in all of those categories in an earlier meeting with Texas in Dallas. The result? An 81-60 beatdown. And Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon isn’t letting his team forget about it.

"I don't think we are very good, I really don't," he said. "I think that's the most exciting thing about where we are. We are not playing very well, making lot of mistakes, a lot of silly fouls and we're breaking down defensively. I just think we can do so much better, and that's the bright spot."

Per game this season the Aggies draw four more fouls, shoot seven more free throws and grab about 10 more rebounds than their opponents. And the team knows the importance of getting to the line. In a tight game against Kansas State, the Aggies used a late edge at the charity stripe to pull away for the victory.

"I think they were letting a lot go and then they started calling it a lot tighter and it helped us," guard B.J. Holmes said. "We shoot free throws after practice, during practice, before practice, and I guess it translated to tonight."

And it would be quiet the feat for Texas to win in College Station. The teams have split the past six seasons, with the teams each holding serve on their home floor. In their six victories over the Longhorns, the Aggies have won by an average of 13.3 points. Only one of those games was decided by fewer than 11 points.

                            Pick: Aggies

Game of the day: Texas at Texas A&M
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Longhorns at Texas A&M Aggies (+1.5, 128.5)

A battle of Top 20 Big 12 basketball powers tips off Monday when Texas A&M (17-3, 4-2) hosts conference-leading Texas (18-3, 6-0) at sold-out Reed Arena in College Station. Let’s see how they match up.

                              CAN’T SHOOT STRAIGHT

Despite ranking 101st in the nation in scoring, and 109th in the nation shooting from the field, the Aggies took a 17-2 record on the season into Nebraska this past Saturday.

Its only two losses this campaign were a nail-biter to Boston College and a 21-point blowout against Texas.

As expected, it was the offense that was the culprit in 57-48 loss to the Huskers at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Despite outrebounding Nebraska, 19-9, and being up 31-24 at halftime, A&M’s marshmallow attack went super soft in the second half, accounting for just 17 points.

The Aggies shot 24 percent from the field in the last 20 minutes and 39 percent for the game. They also made just six of 14 free throws. In the end, A&M won the rebounding advantage for the 19th time in 20 games but lost 14 turnovers to Nebraska’s seven.

"We just weren't tough enough," A&M head coach Mark Turgeon said. "It was physical, real physical, and we didn't respond. We've been able to in the past, but we didn't today."

                              CRACK THE CODE

So the question begs: How does a team that averages 71.4 points a game and shoots less than 45 percent from the field keep winning?

That seems to be the question many people are asking, yet no one can figure out the answer.

Leading scorer, sophomore F Khris Middleton is averaging 15.7 points per game while senior F Nathan Walkup leads the team in rebounding at 5.6 per game. C David Loubeau completes a smallish front line. Not overly impressive numbers, to say the least.

Remember, this is a team that was 0-16 in conference play six years ago and has won at least one game in the NCAA tournament every year since.

Despite limited talent, A&M plays with confidence, takes care of the ball and works hard at the defensive end – all things within its control.

                              BOARD GAMES

The Longhorns have played one of the hardest schedules in college basketball, and at the same time, they find themselves 18-3 and ranked inside the Top 10 in the polls.

Rick Barnes’ team is tearing up the Big 12 with six straight wins – all conference foes and all by double-digits - and showing no signs of slowing down.

Sophomore guard Jordan Hamilton leads the team in scoring, averaging 19.5 points per game, and freshman Tristan Thompson is leading the Longhorns in rebounding.

Hamilton had 16 points and a career-high 13 boards in Saturday night’s 71-58 victory over Missouri, helping Texas remain undefeated in the Big 12.

Like the five teams before them in Texas' run, the Tigers came away impressed by the Longhorns' bruising play near the baskets.

"There's no secret how they play," Missouri guard Kim English said. "They are a physical team. They pressure the ball. Big, strong guys."

UT senior forward Gary Johnson promised more rugged, physical defense.

"We lost to a team that played that way at Pittsburgh," Johnson said. "We didn't like it. Good defense beats good offense on any given night. That's what we do."

                              CATCH US IF YOU CAN

                              So how good is Texas?

The only three losses this team has suffered are against highly ranked Pittsburgh, at USC, and against ranked Connecticut.

In the win over Missouri - the league’s most prolific scoring team – Saturday, the Longhorns were 16 of 34 at the charity stripe and it didn’t matter. They rebounded those misses and went about their business.

Texas is basically two games ahead of Kansas because of the tiebreaking Longhorn win head-to-head, and will be favored in every game the rest of the way out.

                              MEASURING STICK

According to *********** College Basketball Statistics, here is a breakdown of how each team ranks among 345 others in three pivotal stat categories, namely Offensive Field Goal Percentage, Defensive Field Goal Percentage and Rebound Margin this season:

                              YOU NEED TO KNOW

Texas A&M is 93-10 straight up at home the last six seasons, including 29-1 the last 30 games and 12-0 this campaign.
