    Daily Sports Roundup: January 30

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NFL stages its Pro Bowl in Hawaii, the NHL puts on its own All-Star Game in Raleigh, and the Magic get a visit from the Cavaliers.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The NFL serves up an appetizer to the Super Bowl on Sunday night with the AFC taking on the NFC in the Pro Bowl in Honolulu. The AFC will be short one star quarterback on Sunday, with Tom Brady missing the game due to injury. Philip Rivers, Peyton Manning, and replacement Matt Cassel will handle the QB duties for the conference, while Michael Vick, Matt Ryan, and Drew Brees will be under center for the NFC. Oddsmakers have the NFC pegged as 1-point favorites for Sunday, with the total at 63.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are seven games on the NBA's schedule for Sunday, including the first meeting of the season between the Celtics and Lakers in Los Angeles. As well, it'll be Miami at Oklahoma City, Denver at Philadelphia, Detroit at New York, Utah at Golden State, New Orleans at Phoenix, and Cleveland at Orlando. The Magic have already knocked off the Cavaliers twice this season, winning 111-100 at home as an 11-point favorite on November 26, and 110-95 on the road as a 7.5-point favorite on December 28. Gilbert Arenas had a team-high 22 points for the Magic in that December win, while Jason Richardson had 20 points, and Dwight Howard added 12 points. Antawn Jamison led the way for the Cavaliers with 21 points in that defeat, and Daniel Gibson had 15 points.

As well, there are three games involving ranked teams on tap around college basketball on Sunday, with No. 3 Duke at St. John's, Indiana at No. 25 Michigan State, and No. 18 Washington at Washington State. The Huskies (15-4 SU, 11-6-1 ATS) have won three straight games, beating Arizona State 88-75 at home last time out; Matthew Bryan-Amaning had 30 points for Washington that day. The Cougars (14-6 SU, 11-5-1 ATS) will be looking to shake off the 65-63 home loss they suffered against Arizona last time out; DeAngelo Casto picked up 17 points for Washington State on the day. Washington and Washington State last met last February, with the Huskies grabbing a 59-52 victory.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL's All-Star Game is set for Sunday afternoon in Raleigh, North Carolina. The oddsmakers have Team Lidstrom and Team Staal both at -110 for the event, with the total for the contest set high at 16.5 goals. Nicklas Lidstrom's selected squad includes forwards Patrick Kane, Martin St. Louis, Steven Stamkos, and Henrik Sedin along with goaltender Tim Thomas. Eric Staal's team features forwards Alex Ovechkin and Daniel Sedin along with defenseman Zdeno Chara and goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.

Bettors' best friend: Sunday's wagering tips

      Line to watch

Cleveland Cavaliers at Orlando Magic (-17, 204)

This line opened as high as -18 in favor of Orlando but was bet down to -17 just hours after post.

      Who’s hot?

New Orleans Hornets – The Hornets have won 10 straight games, going 7-3 ATS in that span.

      Who’s not?

Cleveland Cavaliers - Cleveland has lost 19 straight games and is just 4-15 ATS in that span.

      Injury not to be overlooked

Amare Stoudemire – The New Knicks forward is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Pistons after spraining his right knee against the Atlanta Hawks Friday. Hawks forward Marvin Williams fell on Stoudemire’s leg, leaving the All-Star forward to limp off the court. Fellow forward Wilson Chandler missed Friday’s game with a sore calf and is also questionable versus Detroit Sunday.

      Game of the day

Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers (-2.5, 185)

      Notable quotable

"We just have to be careful with what we're taking. I know he wouldn't do it on purpose. He's upset, of course. I just told him it's a minor setback for a major comeback." – Memphis Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph on O.J. Mayo’s claim that an energy drink made him test positive for steroids. Mayo is serving a 10-game suspension for violating the NBA’s drug policy.

      Tips and notes

      - The New York Knicks will be without budding shutdown defender Shawne Williams when they host the Detroit Pistons Sunday. Williams was suspended one game after a scuffle with Atlanta’s Marvin Williams Friday night. Williams’ absence won’t force books to move the odds, however, he had an impressive performance against the Miami Heat Thursday, guarding LeBron James and forcing the two-time MVP to shoot 7 for 24 from the field in a 93-88 win for the Knicks.

      - Phil Mickelson (+500) fired a 68 on Saturday to grab a share of first place with second-round leader Bill Haas (+300) at 12-under-par 204 in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Hunter Mahan (+1,400) eagled the final hole to shoot a 69 and jump into a two-way tie for third place with Bubba Watson (+1,400). Anthony Kim (+700) is one stroke back alone in fifth and Jhonattan Vegas (+5,000) is alone in sixth at 9-under. A crowded pack of six golfers are five strokes back from the leaders, led by Dustin Johnson (+1,800) and Brandt Snedeker (+8,000) at 7-under.

      - The Siena Saints are likely to be without star guard Clarence Jackson when they face the Niagara Purple Eagles Sunday. Jackson, who is scoring just under 16 points per game, was downgraded to doubtful after missing Friday’s game versus Loyola-Maryland. Jackson hasn’t played since suffering the injury against St. Peter’s on Jan. 21. Reserve guard Kyle Griffin is also expected to sit out Sunday with a shoulder injury that forced him out of Friday’s game as well.

NHL All-Star Game: What bettors need to know

Team Staal (-105) vs. Team Lidstrom (-103)

The NHL season shuts down this weekend for the league’s All-Star Game in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Here are a few things you need to know if you are interested in betting on hockey's midseason classic.

        New format

Desperate to generate more interest in the All-Star Game, the NHL changed the format of the game this year.

For the first time ever, teams were formed with a fantasy draft Friday as captains Eric Staal and Nicklas Lidstrom picked their sides like elementary school kids make teams on the playground.

        Crowd favorites

If you think having the support of the crowd could make a difference, look no further than Team Staal.

Staal captains the Hurricanes, who are the host of Sunday’s game. But it doesn’t end there. Staal selected teammate and former Stanley Cup champion goaltender Cam Ward with the first-overall pick in the draft, then snatched up Hurricanes star rookie Jeff Skinner in the 11th round.

Team Lidstrom has no Carolina players on its roster.

        Getting offensive

Whether it was intentional or not, Team Staal and Team Lidstrom’s lineups reflect the mentalities of their captains.

Staal, a forward, has gone with six players that have 23 goals or more this season. Lidstrom, a future Hall of Fame defenseman, has the league’s top three goal-scoring blueliners (himself, Dustin Byfuglien and Brent Burns). Team Lidstrom’s defense corps has combined for 214 points this season, 46 more than Team Staal’s blueline unit.

        Who’s there?

Some of the NHL’s top point producers this year will suit up in the All-Star Game, including league leader Steven Stamkos of the Lightning.

Keith Yandle of the Coyotes, who leads all defensemen in points, was a last-minute injury replacement to participate in the midseason classic.

The Bruins’ Tim Thomas, the league leader in goals-against average and save percentage, is one of six goalies that will play in the game. Thomas has been the winning goalie in the past two All-Star Games.

        Who’s not there?

Arguably the league’s brightest star, Penguins star Sidney Crosby, is sitting this one out as he deals with concussion-like symptoms.

Other significant scratches are the Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin and the Flames’ Jarome Iginla.

        History lesson

The NHL All-Star Game initially was an exhibition game pitting the defending Stanley Cup champions against the best players from the other teams in the league. The format then changed to have the top players from each conference go against each other, while the league also experimented with a North America vs. World format for a few years in the 1990s.

Whatever the format, NHL All-Star Games have lacked intensity and, most of all, defense in recent years. The last three games have featured 21, 15 and 23 total goals - averaging about four times the amount of goals in a typical NHL regular season contest.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: Duke at St. John's
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Duke Blue Devils at St. John's Red Storm

                THE STORY
: Two of the winningest programs in NCAA history square off before an expected sellout crowd in a Sunday afternoon showcase at Madison Square Garden. Duke is fourth on the all-time victory list, St. John's seventh.

                TV: 1 p.m ET, CBS

ABOUT ST. JOHN'S (11-8, 4-5 Big East, 7-11 ATS): Coming off a 77-52 loss to Georgetown on Wednesday, St. John's is facing its eighth straight top-25 opponent (2-5); St. John's has the second-toughest schedule in the nation, according to rpiratings.com. Coach Steve Lavin's experienced but undersized Red Storm start four seniors and 6-7 freshman forward Dwayne Polee II, the tallest regular along with Justin Brownlee (13.2 ppg). Dwight Hardy, a 6-2 guard, has averaged a team-high 14.5 points while shooting .897 from the foul line.

D.J. Kennedy's scoring is down (10.7 ppg after averaging 15.1 last season), but the 6-5 guard leads St. John's in rebounding (5.8). Kennedy has been effective against Duke; in three previous meetings (all St. John's losses), Kennedy averaged 18.0 points and 5.3 rebounds, shooting .567 from the field.

ABOUT DUKE (19-1, 6-1 ACC, 10-9 ATS): The defending national champions are ranked No. 3 in both major polls, matching the best start in program history. Reserve Seth Curry (8.3 ppg) scored a season-high 20 points Thursday in an 84-68 victory over visiting Boston College that extended Duke's nation-best home winning streak to 31.

Nolan Smith is on pace to become the first player to lead the ACC in scoring average (20.5) and assists (5.7); he is also averaging 4.6 rebounds. Smith is filling the point guard slot in the absence of injured freshman Kyrie Irving. Sophomore Mason Plumlee is averaging 8.8 rebounds, reaching double figures the past five games.

WHO'S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Duke 6-11 sophomore Ryan Kelly continues to sizzle. He hit 20 of 26 (.769) from the field over the past four games, making 18 straight during one span. His season average is 7.1 points. Georgetown held St. John's to a season-low .339 from the field as Hardy managed just 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting.

KEY STATISTIC: 3-point shooting, where there's a 15-point difference in the teams' average production. St. John's is making 4.1 per game, second-fewest among the 16 Big East teams, at a .312 clip. Duke leads the ACC, averaging 9.1 treys a game and shooting .401.

RECENT HISTORY: It's all Duke lately. The Blue Devils have beaten St. John's seven straight times, lead 14-5 dating to 1938 and have won 10 of their last 14 games against Big East opponents. The Blue Devils are 20-6 at Madison Square Garden under coach Mike Krzyzewski; St. John's is 392-260 (.601) all-time at the Garden.

LOOK AHEAD: Duke visits Maryland on Wednesday and hosts North Carolina State on Saturday. St. John's hosts Rutgers on Wednesday at Carnasecca Arena in Queens, then jumps back into the national spotlight at UCLA on Saturday, facing the program that Lavin coached the previous seven years.

LAST WORD: The names and the setting promise excitement, even if the expected mismatch develops. Outmanned St. John's could make things interesting if early momentum gets the home crowd going, though the veteran Blue Devils aren't likely to get too rattled.

                TRENDS:

                * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in St. John's.
                * Under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.
                * Blue Devils are 2-6 ATS in the last eight meetings.

Miami Heat at Oklahoma City Thunder

                      Feeling the Heat

The Heat have won two straight and three of four following a four-game losing skid earlier this month, but they are still significantly banged up. In fact, LeBron James could be the only one of the “Big 3” to suit up at Oklahoma City Sunday.

Chris Bosh has missed four consecutive games with an ankle injury and Dwyane Wade was a late scratch from Friday’s one-point win over Detroit due to a sprained wrist. Wade’s status was announced just 15 minutes before tipoff and his availability for Sunday could also come down to the wire.

“No one feels sorry for us,” LeBron James said after Friday’s victory. “No matter who's in uniform, guys have to step up.”

James did just that, torching the Pistons for 39 points while adding eight rebounds and nine assists. Mike Miller had a double-double (12 points, 10 boards) and Eddie House chipped in 15 points.

Still, the Heat are extremely short-handed without Wade and Bosh and although coach Erik Spoelstra has not ruled out a Bosh return Sunday, the forward is not expected to make an appearance until February 3.

                      The Big 2

Miami's Big 3 may be reduced to just one, but the Thunder has a "Big 2" and it’s still going strong.

Kevin Durant is averaging 28.6 points per game and has reached the 40-point mark in two straight outings. He exploded for 47 points and 18 rebounds in a Wednesday win over Minnesota and he poured in 40 against the Wizards Friday.

Russell Westbrook is averaging 22.4 points and 8.4 assists. He has scored at least 15 points in 11 straight games and he produced a triple-double with 35 points, 13 assists, and 13 boards Friday.

“I feel I’m playing well,” said Westbrook, who is the only player in the league averaging 22 points, eight points, and five rebounds per contest. “But I always can do better. I definitely think it’s an improved season from my second year. It’s been another step for me.”

A day off Saturday is good news for the Thunder, but Durant, Westbrook and company could be hard-pressed to keep it up. Will they be feeling the effects of going to overtime against Minnesota and double overtime against Washington?

                      Trending topics

The Heat are 1-5-1 ATS in their last six overall. The over is 7-3 in their last 10 overall.

Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers

                      Boston Massacre

Friday's visit to Phoenix was disastrous in pretty much every way for the Celtics. Not only did they lose 88-71, but both Kevin Garnett and Doc Rivers were ejected. Garnett got into an altercation with Channing Frye late in the fourth quarter and Rivers was not around that long, getting tossed in the second quarter for arguing.

Even Rajon Rondo had an off night, and he took the blame for the loss after turning the ball over seven times. "It starts with me," Rondo noted. "I've had back-to-back six and seven turnovers."

To add insult to injury, Kendrick Perkins missed the second half of the game with a strained hamstring. The Celtics have been rotating guys on and off the injury report all season long, and it continues. Just when Shaquille O'Neal (hip) returned from a three-game absence, now Perkins (who has been out for most of the year recovering from an ACL tear) looks sure to miss more time.

                      Caught looking ahead

For the Lakers, this showdown apparently started at least two days in advance. Hosting the lowly Sacramento Kings Friday night, L.A. somehow managed to lose 100-95 and admitted it had a different contest than the one at hand on its mind.

"We didn't even come out and defend the way we should have, myself in particular," explained Andrew Bynum, who saw DeMarcus Cousins go off for 27 points. "In the first half, I kind of disrespected Cousins and he got off to a blazing start. You can't do that in the NBA. Can't take a night off defensively."

The Lakers hope Friday night was a wakeup call, but that was not the case when they got hammered by Milwaukee ahead of a Christmas Day clash with Miami. Instead, they laid another egg and got blown out by the Heat 96-80.

“Some teams play better than you on some nights and are better prepared,” head coach Phil Jackson lamented Friday. “I can't even explain it. I'm not even going to try…. Sometimes it serves a purpose, not damage. Guys get back and get back to their game and aggressiveness.”

We’ll find out if the Lakers can spit it into some kind of positive Sunday.

                      Finals rematch

This will be the season’s first installment of one of the best rivalries in all of sports. While the Celtics and Lakers have not yet faced each other this season, they obviously have plenty of recent history with one another.

Two of the last three NBA Finals have featured these two powerhouses, with the Celtics prevailing in six games three seasons ago before the Lakers exacted revenge in seven games last summer.

Bryant averaged 28.6 points per game during the 2010 NBA Finals and the Celtics will also have to do a better job of putting a body on Gasol, who pulled in more than 11 rebounds per contest. Rondo led Boston in rebounds, assists and steals over the seven-game slate and he also delivered a triple-double in a Game 2 win at the Staples Center.

                      Trending topics

The under is 5-0 in the Celtics last five road games.

The Lakers are 4-1 ATS in their last five home games against teams with winning SU records. The under is 5-1 in their last six home games.

The under is 5-0 in the last five meetings between Boston and Los Angeles.

                        NBA

Miami Heat at Oklahoma City Thunder (N/A)

If the Thunder goes as Kevin Durant goes, then Oklahoma City had better hope its star player and MVP candidate keeps crashing the boards.

In the six games this season where Durant has collected double-digit rebounds, he has cracked the 30-point margin in four of those outings. It might not sound like much, but that is about two points per game more than his season average.

And every bit matters for the Thunder.

In a 118-117 overtime win over the Timberwolves earlier this week, the “Durantula” snagged a career-high 18 rebounds. Not surprisingly, this aggressive mentality carried over to his scoring, where he dropped a career-high tying 47.

“I’m just running in there trying to get them,” Durant said. “In college, I was a good rebounder and I wanted to bring that to the league. I think my first two seasons I got away from it. Last year, I did better, and this year I’m trying to do a little better as well.”

And he should get plenty of chances to grab rebounds against the Heat. Miami has been outrebounded in five of their past eight games as an opponent also has finished as the game-high rebounder five times over that span.

                        Pick: Oklahoma City

Maryland Terrapins at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (+3, 139.5)

Terrapins forward Jordan Williams has been destroying the opposition this year, averaging 17.6 points and 12.1 rebounds per game with his massive, 6-foot-10, 260-pound frame. He has been a force down low all season for Maryland, owning the paint by stringing together 13 straight games with a double-double.

However, that string was surprisingly snapped in a recent blowout of Virginia. Despite logging 32 minutes in the victory, he finished with a mere four points and six rebounds as he picked up a pair of fouls and committed two turnovers. The reason? He was harassed all night by Cavaliers 7-foot center Assane Sene.

The Yellow Jackets can offer a similar matchup problem for Williams with 6-foot-11, 258-pound center Brian Miller. His 4.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game won’t scare anyone. But his 1.9 blocks a game and massive size is enough to help neutralize the Terrapins’ only inside presence. In two games against Georgia Tech last year, Williams averaged just eight points and nine rebounds, including one foul out.

If Williams Struggles, only guard Cliff Tucker, the team’s sixth man, averages double figures at 11.7 points per game. Maryland is also a bad 3-point shooting team. The Terrapins are 167th nationally from beyond the arc, making a mere 34.4 percent of their attempts.

"In ACC play, teams aren't going to let Jordan win games by himself," said Tucker.

But who else will consistently help him?

                        Pick: Georgia Tech

BLUE DEVILS: (-8.5, O/U 143) The defending national champions are making a strong case for being the 2nd ranked team in the nation when the latest polls are released. Boston Celtics at Los Angeles Lakers [ABC | 3:30 PM ET]

CELTICS: Boston is coming off a rare loss, as they lost both the battle and the war against Portland. F Kevin Garnett was ejected due to a poke to the groin. The Celtics played a physical game, and it ended up costing them a win in the end. Boston has been playing at an elite level all year long, as they have the best record in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics are 35-11 SU and 22-2-2 ATS overall this season. Boston has revenge on their minds, as the last time they faced the Lakers they lost in the NBA Finals. Boston is 13-8 SU and 12-9 ATS on the road this year. The Celtics are 5-2 ATS this season as the listed underdog. The Celtics are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 Sunday games. Projected Score: 89

LAKERS: (-3, O/U 185) Los Angeles is starting to have a critical flaw, as they continue to play to the level of their competition. That could be a good thing today, as the Lakers tackle the elite Boston Celtics. The Lakers lost at home inexplicably to Sacramento in their last game. Los Angeles is 33-14 SU and 21-25-1 ATS overall this season. The Lakers are currently in 2nd place in the Western Conference, 7 games behind San Antonio. The Lakers are 18-6 SU and 10-14 ATS in home games this year. The Lakers are 21-25 ATS as the listed favorite this season. Los Angeles is 5-7 ATS after a SU loss as the listed favorite.
