Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carolina Hurricanes at New York Islanders (+117, 5.5)

One point. That’s all that sits between the Hurricanes and a playoff berth. Carolina has won six of its past 10 games as the young club is playing its best hockey of the season.

The 'Canes are led by star rookie rookie center Jeff Skinner. The first-year pivot has 18 goals and 22 assists this season and is among the rookie leaders in both statistical categories as he is one of the favorites for the Calder Trophy. Over his past 10 games – coinciding with the team’s hot streak – he has six goals, five assists and is plus-6.

"His hands are brilliant," Carolina coach Paul Maurice said. "He's got all the elements that you want. He's committed, he's focused, he worked his butt off this summer to get into great shape. ... He has a passion for the game."

Meantime, the Islanders simply can’t get anything going. New York has dropped seven of its past 10 games and allowed an average of 3.7 goals per game over that span.

In the only meeting this year, Carolina beat up the Isles 7-2. Oh, and Skinner had a goal and an assist and was plus-1 in the win.

    Pick: Carolina

Phoenix Coyotes at Colorado Avalanche (-144, 5.5)

These two sides haven’t exactly been defensive stalwarts the past few weeks.

Phoenix, which has seen the over go 28-19 in 47 games this season, has allowed at least four goals in three of its past four contests. Overall, the Coyotes have played to the over in seven of their past eight.

"I think that's been an interesting stretch since about 7 in the morning on Dec. 26," Shane Doan said. "It's been a pretty good run; it's been hectic. As a group, we'll definitely enjoy the four days (for the All-Star Break)."

But before the festivities begin, the Avalanche must find a way to keep the puck out of their own net. Colorado has seen the over hit in 31 of 48 games this season and the past four overall. And it’s not the team’s outstanding offense blowing up the scoreboard. It’s the team’s abysmal defense and goaltending.

No. 1 Craig Anderson has battled injuries this year and his poor numbers – 3.13 goals-against average and .902 save percentage – led to him ultimately being pulled after coughing up four goals in just two periods of a 6-2 loss to Boston this weekend. Backup Peter Budaj has been equally awful. He has a 3.12 goals-against average and a .896 save percentage and has allowed at least three goals in each of his past 12 starts.

    Pick: Over

      Tips and Trends
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Utah Jazz [ESPN | 9:35 PM ET]

SPURS: (-2.5, O/U 198.5) San Antonio has the best record in the NBA at 38-7 SU, 5 more wins than any other team in the league. The Spurs currently have a 6 game lead over the Lakers in the race for the best record in the Western Conference. The Spurs have been so impressive this year, they are 26-17-2 ATS as well. Typically the best teams in the league have a losing record from an ATS standpoint. The Spurs are 14-5 SU on the road this season. San Antonio continues to show their offensive prowess this season, as they are averaging 104.1 PPG. 9 different Spurs average at least 7 PPG this year, proving just how much depth this veteran team has. G Manu Ginobli leads San Antonio in scoring, averaging 18.6 PPG this year. F Tim Duncan is averaging 13.6 PPG and a team high 9.5 RPG this year. The Spurs are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games playing on 1 days rest. San Antonio is 13-4 ATS in their last 17 games against the NBA Northwest. The Spurs are 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall.

Spurs are 5-0 ATS last 5 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600%.
Under is 9-1 last 10 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Matt Bonner (knee) is questionable.

Projected Score: 97 (UNDER-Total of the Day)

JAZZ: Utah has really been struggling of late, something you don't see for an extended period of time with Jerry Sloan as coach. PG Deron Williams has stated that the Jazz have likely hit rock bottom right now. The Jazz are simply too talented to stay down for long, and tonight offers them an opportunity to beat the best team in the NBA this season. Utah is 27-17 SU and 20-23-1 ATS overall this season. The Jazz currently hold the 6th seed in the Western Conference looking ahead to the playoffs. The Jazz are 15-7 SU at home this year, a record they will try to improve now that they are finally back home after an extended road trip. Utah has revenge on their minds, as they lost by 12 PTS to the Spurs earlier this season. Williams is the leader of an offense that is averaging 100.1 PPG this season. Williams is averaging team highs of 21.7 PPG and 9.5 APG this year. F Al Jefferson has been a welcome addition to Utah, as he's averaging 16.7 PPG and 8.8 RPG this year. The Jazz are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 home games against a team with a winning road record. Utah is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600%. The Jazz are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games against the Western Conference. Utah is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 Wednesday games overall. The Jazz are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games. The Jazz are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall.

Jazz are 5-2 ATS last 7 home games following a road trip of 7 or more days.
Over is 7-3 last 10 games playing on zero days rest.

Key Injuries - C Francisco Elson (quad) is questionable.

      Projected Score: 94

San Diego St. Aztecs at BYU Cougars [10:00 PM ET]

AZTECS: It's been a storybook season for San Diego St, and it all culminates tonight in what will be the toughest game of their regular season. San Diego St. is one of only 2 undefeated teams in all of college basketball. The Aztecs are 20-0 SU and 12-6 ATS, as they are ranked 4th in the country in the national polls. SDSU has an elite frontcourt, that is simply relentless in rebounding the basketball. Combine that with a steady PG in D.J. Gay, and you have a recipe for success. The Aztecs are 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS in true road games this year. Tonight will mark just the 2nd time this season the Aztecs will be the listed underdog. In their 2nd game of the season, they beat Gonzaga on the road as a 6 point underdog. F Kawhi Leonard is averaging team highs of 15.7 PPG and 10.3 RPG this season. Gay is averaging 12.8 PPG and a team high 3.2 APG this year. F Malcolm Thomas is averaging 11.8 PPG and 8.1 RPG this season for the Aztecs. The Aztecs are 10-1-1 ATS in their last 12 games against a team with a winning SU record. San Diego St. is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following an ATS loss. The Aztecs are 13-3-1 ATS in their last 17 road games against a team with a home winning percentage greater than .600%. The Aztecs are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games against the Mountain West Conference. San Diego St. is 14-6-1 ATS in their last 21 games overall.

Aztecs are 17-5-1 ATS last 23 road games.
Under is 6-1 last 7 games overall.

      Key Injuries - None Reported.

      Projected Score: 65

COUGARS: (-5, O/U 145) BYU is an impressive 19-1 SU this season, ranking them 9th in the nation. The Cougars have been overshadowed by the undefeated Aztecs, but tonight is their opportunity to make a statement. While 19-1 SU, BYU is just 7-9 ATS this year. The Cougars are a perfect 8-0 SU and 2-3 ATS at home this year. BYU was able to beat SDSU by 14 PTS last year at home, a feat they'd love repeat tonight. G Jimmer Fredette is arguably the best player in the country this year. Fredette is averaging a team high 26.6 PPG and 4.4 APG this year. G Jackson Emery is a great compliment to Fredette, as he's averaging 13 PPG in his own right. F Brandon Davies is averaging 9.8 PPG and 5.6 RPG this season. The Cougars are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 Wednesday games. BYU is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games after scoring more than 90 points in their previous game. The Cougars are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games against a team with a road winning percentage greater than .600%.

Cougars are 0-8 ATS last 8 games following an ATS win.
Over is 6-0 last 6 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600%.

Key Injuries - F Chris Collinsworth (knee) is out.

Projected Score: 79 (SIDE of the Day)
