Bettor's best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

Line to keep an eye on

Toronto Maple Leafs at Tampa Bay Lightning – The Leafs recalled goaltender James Reimer on Sunday, who was sent down last week despite strong play between the pipes. Jean-Sebastien Giguere got the start in Monday night’s contest, so Reimer may get a chance to pick up where he left off against Tampa on Tuesday. The total is currently set at six goals, but Reimer’s presence could possibly swing that by half a goal.

    Who’s hot

NBA: The over is 8-2 in the Los Angeles Clippers’ last 10 games as an underdog.

NHL: The Anaheim Ducks are 5-1 in their last six against teams with losing records.

NCAAB: The Connecticut Huskies are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games against teams with a winning record.

NHL: Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos has seven goals and three assists in his last six games.

    Who’s not

NBA: The Dallas Mavericks are 1-8 ATS in their last nine games overall.

NHL: The Ottawa Senators are 1-7 in their last eight games against the Eastern Conference.

NCAAB: The Ohio State Buckeyes are 1-4 ATS in their last five games against teams with a winning record.

NHL: Chicago Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane has gone five straight games without a goal.

    Key stat

7 – The number of rookies that were in the lineup for the New York Rangers’ game against the Washington Capitals on Monday. New York’s injury report is long enough to create another separate team, yet the Broadway Blueshirts remain in a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Antoine Vermette, Columbus Blue Jackets – Vermette is questionable for Tuesday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks with an illness. While he is well behind last season’s pace with just 27 points in 48 games, Vermette is riding a four-game point streak and is a strong two-way player. His tough defensive play would be sorely missed against a very physical Ducks squad.

    Game of the day

No. 12 Purdue at No. 1 Ohio State (-8, 134.5)

    Notable quotable

"I don't think the Lakers will be good for much longer. You can keep a car running for a long time by changing the tires, etc. But you can't change a player's tires." – Former Los Angeles Lakers player and general manager Jerry West, on how the Lakers’ age is affecting their defense and will soon catch up with them.

    Tips and notes

The Dallas Mavericks got the go-ahead from the NBA to trade center Alexis Ajinca to the Toronto Raptors. The move opened up a roster spot and Dallas promptly signed Peja Stojakovic. The 33-year-old forward is shooting 48.4 percent from behind the 3-point line this season, but he is not expected to join the team for Tuesday’s game against Los Angeles. While losing Ajinca shouldn’t be too damaging the the high-flying Blake Griffin is coming to town. There could be a lot of fouls called against Dallas big men and missing another body could lead to foul trouble for the likes of Dirk Nowitzki.

Buffalo Sabres forward Drew Stafford skated Monday to test out his ailing groin. Stafford has missed three straight games, but head coach Lindy Ruff said there’s a chance he could play in Tuesday’s game against Ottawa. Buffalo is on an 8-3-1 stretch, but recently lost forwards Tim Connolly and Patrick Kaleta, while leading scorer Derek Roy is out for the season. Stafford has 15 goals and 23 points in 30 games this season.

Los Angeles Clippers shooting guard Eric Gordon did not travel with the team to Dallas for Tuesday’s game against the Mavericks. Gordon suffered a sprained right wrist in Saturday’s win over Golden State. He stayed in Los Angeles for further evaluation and treatment but is listed as a game-time decision. Gordon is the Clippers’ leading scorer at 24.1 points per game and his absence would put even more pressure on Blake Griffin.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best basketball bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      NBA

Charlotte Bobcats at Sacramento Kings (-1, 192.5)

Paul Silas is no Larry Brown – he’s actually better. The veteran NBA coach has led a turnaround that has helped the Bobcats increase their grip on the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference since he took over about a month ago.

When Silas took over just before Christmas, the team was 9-19 and among the worst in the league offensively and at taking care of the ball. Since then the Bobcats have gone 8-6 and have improved dramatically in the scoring department.

The team is averaging nearly six more points per 100 possessions under Silas. The reason is that players have the green light to take the first open shot and are not restricted to run a set play every time down the floor. As a result, the team has turned the ball over nine times or fewer in four of the team’s past seven games.

And you think the Kings are going to slow them down? Sacramento played Monday night in Portland and now must try to lock down the surging Bobcats. Good luck – Sacramento ranks 22nd in opponent points allowed (103) and 26th in opponent field goal percentage (47.3).

“We’ve got shooters,” Silas said. “We’ve got defenders. We’ve got shot blockers. We’ve got all the ingredients that you need. The guys just have to get out and play and believe in themselves and believe that I believe in them. I’ve found that if you have a confident player, it’s unbelievable what he can do.”

      Pick: Charlotte

      NCAAB

Kansas Jayhawks at Colorado Buffaloes (8, OFF)

The Jayhawks have no problem beating the Buffaloes – but it’s usually not easy. Kansas is 10-0 in its past 10 meetings with Colorado, but is just 4-6 ATS over that span and a mere 1-5 ATS since 2008.

It doesn’t help Kansas that this instalment of the Buffaloes is one best in recent memory. Led by stud guard Alec Burks and his 19.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, the team is amassing a solid NCAA Tournament resume thanks to a phenomenal 10-0 home record.

"I think we are really starting to get a feel for each other on the floor," Buffalo coach Tad Boyle said. "We're executing at a pretty high level offensively right now, we're shooting the ball well and we're sharing the ball. I think offensively we've made some great strides."

The team will have to keep making strides to upset the Jayhawks. Kansas is 4-0 on the road this year, including wins over Baylor, Iowa State, Cal and an overtime victory at Michigan. However the team is just 2-2 ATS in those games and is coming off an 11-point home loss to Texas, the team’s first setback this season.

"It's a big game, but it's just one game," Kansas coach Bill Self said of the loss to Texas. "In the second half, (Texas was) terrific. Of course, we helped them be terrific. We give up 51 points in our building in a half. They deserve the outcome that they got today. We've got to rebound ... and hopefully not let one become two."

      Pick: Colorado

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anaheim Ducks at Columbus Blue Jackets (-125, 5.5)

The Ducks are alive and quacking for a playoff berth thanks to an elite power play.

Anaheim is converting 23.7 percent of its man advantages, notching 11 power-play goals over its past 10 games, including a 2-1 win over the Senators where it failed to draw a penalty. Both Corey Perry and Teemu Selanne have each scored nine times on the man advantages and the Ducks have a whopping eight players with at least two power-play tallies.

As a result of the team’s tear on the power play, the squad is 7-3 over its past 10 and among a handful of teams vying for the No. 4 seed.

"We're trying to find that consistency," Ducks center Saku Koivu said. "Obviously if you want to be successful and do it all the time, you can't have games or periods that you don't do the things that you're supposed to do. I think that's been one thing that we're not happy about our game, that inconsistency. But you can look around the league and there are only a couple of teams that really have done that. It's not easy to do."

However, the team’s power play should be consistent against Columbus – consistently dangerous. The Blue Jackets are a miserable 23rd in the league on the penalty killing, shutting down a mere 79.7 percent of their opponent’s chances.

        Pick: Anaheim

Minnesota Wild at Chicago Blackhawks (-185, 5.5)

The Minnesota Wild simply aren’t good skaters. The team even admitted as much following a recent 4-3 loss to the Sharks.

"You can play fast with your legs or you can play fast with your mind," Minnesota coach Todd Richards said after the San Jose loss. "At times they caught us from behind and stripped pucks from us, but that's what they do. We weren't very crisp, and we weren't handling the puck well, and it caused trouble with their pressure and us not breaking out of our own end."

The team prefers to play a plodding, control style and as a result has drawn just 536 minutes in penalties while committing 540 minutes worth. Those are both among the bottom seven in the league.

Meanwhile Chicago plays at a haphazard pace and loves to rush up the ice, averaging 3.15 goals per game, the fifth-most in the league. In a 4-1 loss to Philadelphia, the team failed to generate much offensive momentum and has focused on puck movement and creativity this week in practice.

“In more ways than one, we were too easy to defend,” Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews said. “We weren’t on the same page with each other and that made it harder to be predictable, especially in the offensive zone when it’s time to capitalize on some of our chances.”

They will make the most of those chances against Minnesota.

        Pick: Chicago

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Jazz travel to Los Angeles to take on the Lakers, Ohio State plays host to Purdue, and the Canadiens look for a win versus Philly.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA's schedule for Tuesday has Denver at Washington, Cleveland at Boston, the Clippers at Dallas, Charlotte at Sacramento, and Utah at the Lakers. The Jazz (27-17 SU, 20-23-1 ATS) ride a four-game losing streak into Tuesday's game, falling 96-85 in Philadelphia in their last game on Saturday night. The Lakers (32-13 SU, 20-25 ATS) are coming off a 107-97 win in Denver on Friday night, with Pau Gasol and Ron Artest each scoring 19 points in that contest. The Jazz beat the Lakers in their only meeting so far this season, winning 102-96 as a 1-point home underdog back on November 26. Deron Williams led the way on offense for the Jazz with 29 points in that November win.

Games involving ranked teams on the college hoops schedule for Tuesday then include No. 24 Florida at Georgia, No. 5 Connecticut at Marquette, Seton Hall at No. 9 Syracuse, No. 6 Kansas at Colorado, and No. 12 Purdue at No. 1 Ohio State. The Buckeyes (20-0 SU, 9-8 ATS) remained undefeated on the season with a 73-68 road win over Illinois last time out; Jared Sullinger tossed in 27 points for Ohio State in that contest. The Boilermakers (17-3 SU, 11-5 ATS) are coming off an 86-76 win over Michigan State in which E'Twaun Moore scored 26 points. Purdue beat Ohio State 60-57 when they played last February.

              Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are eight games on tap around the NHL on Tuesday, with Florida at the Rangers, the Islanders at Pittsburgh, Anaheim at Columbus, Buffalo at Ottawa, Toronto at Tampa Bay, Minnesota at Chicago, Edmonton at Phoenix, and Montreal at Philadelphia. The Canadiens fell 4-3 in a shootout at home to the Ducks in their last game on Saturday night to sit at 27-17-5 on the season. Max Pacioretty scored twice for Montreal in that defeat, and Mathieu Darche had the team's other goal. Carey Price allowed three goals on 26 shots that night. Montreal is 1-2 against Philadelphia so far this year, most recently losing 5-3 at home to them when they played on December 15.

                Tuesday's six-pack

-- Hofstra's Charles Jenkins scored 35 points, had five assists as Pride rallied from 13-point halftime deficit to nip James Madison, 92-90.

-- Notre Dame slowed game down on offense, keeping Pitt offstride as Irish upset Pittsburgh, 56-51, as a 10-point dog.

-- New Orleans Hornets have drawn enough fans to meet attendance guidelines, so they'll be staying on Bourbon Street a few more years.

-- 24 points, 17 rebounds for Kevin Love, but Timberwolves lost again, 129-125 to Minnesota.

-- Inevitable/sad that Stafon Johnson was being spotted in weight eoom

-- Circle February 13; Wizards, who are now 0-21 on road (5-16 against spread), visit the Cavaliers, losers of 17 straight games.

                **************************

Tuesday's Den: Grouping the 32 starting QBs in the NFL........

I don't want to just rank the 32 starting QBs, because at some point its just guesswork, so I put them into six groups..........

                Suspects
-- Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bills-- Not totally sure he belongs on this list, but he has done nothing but play for losing teams.
-- Chad Henne, Miami-- Future of the coaching staff rides on his playing a lot better than he did this season.
-- Tarvaris Jackson, Vikings-- Once went 10-6 as starter, then got pushed to sidelines because of the Favre fiasco. Will he still be there?
-- John Skelton, Arizona-- Showed very strong arm, lack of polish in late-season stint; will they draft another QB?
-- Alex/Troy Smith, 49ers-- Not sure which guy is the starter; would the new coach, a Michigan man, start Buckeye alum Troy Smith?
-- Vince Young, Titans-- Does he have mental toughness to be a starting QB? Jeff Fisher doesn't seem to think so.

On the down side of the hill
-- Matt Hasselbeck, Seattle--Played great in playoff upset of Saints, but he is getting hurt more and more and is nearing the end of the trail.
-- Donovan McNabb, Redskins-- Reid/Shanahan are two of the better QB coaches in the league, and they've both benched McNabb in last couple of years, a major red flag. Does he prepare well? Is he in good shape?
-- Carson Palmer, Bengals-- Said he might retire if Bengals don't trade him, then Bengals said they weren't trading him. Ball is in Palmer's court.

Young and trying to prove themselves
-- Sam Bradford, Rams-- New offensive coordinator, now needs a WR to stretch the field and a productive tight end. He's going to be a good one.
-- Jimmy Clausen, Panthers-- New coach could relegate him to bench.
-- Joe Flacco, Ravens-- Need to beat the Steelers out so they can get some of these playoff games at home. Easier to win them at home.
-- Josh Freeman, Bucs-- Lot better in NFL than he was at Kansas State; he is huge, mobile and pretty accurate. Has poise in tight spots.
-- Colt McCoy, Browns-- Barely escaped suspect list; figures to do well in the West Coast Offense.
-- Matt Ryan, Falcons-- Would be higher on list had they won a playoff game this year; has advantage, like Bradford, of playing in domes a lot.
-- Mark Sanchez, Jets-- Two years, two AFC title games; seems to play better in bigger spots. Showed grit/toughness in playoff loss to Steelers.
-- Matthew Stafford, Lions-- Moves to suspect list unless he can stay on the field; has been hurt a lot in his first two seasons.

                Should be in their prime
-- Jason Campbell, Raiders-- Yet another new head coach next year, but at least he was the OC last year. Close to being on suspect list.
-- Matt Cassel, Chiefs-- How did this guy never start a college game?
-- Jay Cutler, Bears-- Has physical tools, but is he this generation's Jeff George? Does he have what it takes to lead a team?
-- David Garrard, Jaguars-- Plays pretty well when I've watched him, but people in northern Florida aren't that high on him.
-- Kyle Orton, Broncos-- We'll see if he's still the starter in September. It will be interesting to see what John Fox does with Tebow.
-- Tony Romo, Cowboys-- Isn't it time for Dallas to draft a young QB?
-- Matt Schaub, Texans-- If Houston had a better defense, Schaub would get a lot more recognition.

Really good, but not on the top tier yet.......
-- Eli Manning, Giants-- I know his dad demanded that Eli play here, but hard to be a pretty passer playing Nov/Dec games in Swamp Stadium. He plays every week and he's won a Super Bowl.
-- Philip Rivers, Chargers-- Gets to play in great weather in almost every game, especially late in year; has QB guru as head coach. I think he's one of the best, but he needs to get to a Super Bowl.
-- Matt Rodgers, Packers-- Its a good month to be Rodgers and Packers' GM Ted Thompson, who set Favre packing to make room for #12.
-- Michael Vick, Eagles-- No one thought he would be this good, because he wasn't this good before he went to jail. Eagles need to protect him little better next year-- he got pounded in a few games this year.

                The best of the best
-- Tom Brady, Patriots-- One of three best QBs I've seen, in terms of his leadership and being a good teammate. Won three Super Bowls by a FG each, and you don't do that without a great QB.
-- Drew Brees, Saints-- Imagine if Chargers had kept Brees, or if Miami had signed him as free agent instead of Daunte Culpepper (yikes!!). Saints have a lot to be thankful for there.
-- Peyton Manning, Colts-- Doubles as offensive coordinator and coach of the Colts, so he has his hands full (kidding). Seems like this team would be winless without him. Quality of his commercials has slipped.
-- Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers-- Played WR as junior in high school, since the coach's son played QB-- the son wound up playing college football in Division III. Good move, coach.
