Bettors' best friend (BBF): Monday's wagering tips

    KEY TRENDS:

NBA: Memphis Grizzlies have covered the number in 20 of their last 27 games and have also covered in eight of their last 10 meetings with the Raptors in Toronto.

NBA: The under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the New Jersey Nets.

NBA: The Washington Wizards have played under the total in 17 of their last 21 games. They’re up against the New York Knicks, who have covered in their last five meetings, on Monday.

NBA: New Orleans has won eight straight games, while covering in seven of its last nine contests.

NBA: Houston is 10-1-1 against the spread in its last 12 meetings with Minnesota.

NCAAB: Pitt has won nine straight games and covered in each of its last four, but faces a Notre Dame team that has covered the number in four of the last five meetings between the two teams.

NCAAB: Kansas State is 1-8 ATS in its last nine games overall.

NHL: Colorado has won its last four meetings with the St. Louis Blues.

NHL: Nashville has won nine of its last 11 games overall.

NHL: Vancouver has won six of its last seven games against the Dallas Stars.

    NUMBER TO REMEMBER:

0 – The Washington Wizards still don’t have a win on the road this season, sitting 0-20 straight up heading into Monday night’s date in New York. The Wizards are 5-15 against the number over that stretch. They haven’t scored 100 points in their last nine road games, which could be a major problem against the high-scoring Knicks. Washington is set as a 8.5-point underdog Monday in New York.

    NOTES AND TIPS:

No. 16 Notre Dame heads to Pittsburgh for the team’s biggest test of the season on Monday. The Irish have lost their first three conference road games by an average of 17.3 points, failing to cover the number in any of those games. Meanwhile, Pitt heads into the date having won nine straight and covering in its last four contests – the last of which was a 80-50 blowout at DePaul on Saturday. The Panthers are set as 10-point favorites.

Wizards rookie John Wall went through a tough film session recently with Washington assistant Ryan Saunders repeatedly pointing out faults in his game. Saunders showed wall a number of instances when he wasn’t stepping into his jumper properly as well as a lot of examples of his poor attitude when things weren’t going well. Wall was shown rolling his eyes and frowning a lot on the court, which upset the Wizards. It got to the point that Wall, who is trying to work on his leadership, said that he should be fined $50 every time he shows this type of behavior on the court.

Minnesota point guard Luke Ridnour was able to practice on Sunday after being held out of a couple of workouts due to his troublesome hamstring. The 29-year-old is averaging 11.6 points and 5.8 assists per game this season and looks like he should be good to go Monday against the Houston Rockets. Minnesota, which hs dropped six of its last eight against the number, is currently set as a 2.5-point underdog at home.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best basketball bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      NBA

Oklahoma City Thunder at New Orleans Hornets (-4, 191)

The Hornets have put themselves back into the thick of the Western Conference playoff race by doing something the team struggled with around the holidays: playing defense.

With a 41-point win over Atlanta and a 24-point win against San Antonio, the team held consecutive opponents to 72 or fewer points for the first time in franchise history. It also has allowed New Orleans to regain its edge that it lost following a torrid start.

"New Orleans played fantastic defense -- physical, physical, well-executed defense," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich."When you combine that with fine shooting, you're in for a hell of a night. They were wonderful."

Overall, the Hornets have won eight straight and are 6-2 ATS during that span. This season, the Hornets have wins in San Antonio, in Boston and against Miami.

"I don't think we expected the games to be like this," Hornets forward David West, who had 18 points and 10 rebounds in under 30 minutes against the Spurs, said. "But we've been having some good film sessions, having really good dialogue and talking amongst ourselves about what we're going to do and how we're going to defend teams."

      Pick: Hornets

      NCAAB

Baylor Bears at Kansas State Wildcats

The Baylor Bears aren’t big fans of away games. The team has played exactly twice in true road games this year and the results have been mixed – a lackluster, 71-59 win over a horrid Texas Tech squad, and a 72-57 setdback against a mediocre Iowa State team.

What makes the trend even more troubling, is the fact the Bears were a mediocre 1-3 on neutral courts this season. The team went 6-4 on the road last year, but has been a far cry from that squad.

Meantime, for all the turmoil and inconsistent play that has plagued the Wildcats this season, Kansas State has been a force at home, going 10-1. Guard Jacob Pullen appears to finally be regaining his form after an early season suspension and has topped the 20-point mark five times in his six games back.

“We’re getting better,” Kansas State coach Frank Martin said. “I understand our record doesn’t show it, but we’re better prepared to win today than we were January 1.”

Overall, Baylor has dropped two of its past three, while Kansas State has dropped four of its past five but is 4-4 in its last eight. The Wildcats also have won two straight and three of their past five meetings against the Bears.

      Pick: Kansas State

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nashville Predators at Calgary Flames (-125, 5)

The Predators have been on a tear thanks to the inspired play of forward J.P. Dumont. The key to re-energizing the struggling 32-year-old forward? Putting a pair of youngsters next to him.

Dumont had a mere 11 points and five goals through 44 games this year, seeing his ice time dwindle by nearly six minutes from last season, down to around 12:20 this year. However, coach Barry Trotz made the interesting move of putting him on a line with young talents Matt Halischuk, 22, and rookie Peter Mueller, 22.

The result? Scoring five goals in his past two games, including a hat trick in the team’s 5-2 win over Phoenix last week, the Predator’s first hat trick of the season. Coach Barry Trotz sees the player’s motivation as very simple – play poorly, and their next stop is the AHL.

"Play simple and play hard and play like you don't want to get sent back," Trotz said. "They're playing with a lot of desperation and I think that energy is helping J.P."

The Flames, meantime, have found a scoring touch lately, seeing the over hit in four straight and seven of their past 10. Overall, Calgary is averaging 3.2 goals in its past 10 contests – well above its 2.7 goals per game season average.

With a hot team and a hot line playing against a team that is finding the back of the net, expect plenty of fireworks.

            Pick: Over

Boston Bruins at Los Angeles Kings (-115, 5.5)

You would think the Bruins – a team that has seen the under hit in 25 of its 41 games this year – would be boring, low-scoring team to watch. The past 10 games, it’s been anything but.

Boston has scored four of more goals five times in the past 10 games. Overall, the team is averaging four goals per game during that streak, a span that has seen the over go 6-3-1. And that scoring streak has led to plenty of wins on the road. In fact, the B’s are the NHL’s second-best road team, posting a 15-5-4 record away from Massachusetts.

“The road has been good to us this year,” Boston coach Claude Julien said. “We’ve played some great games. The guys really seem to be prepared and they seem to bond well together on the road. This is another opportunity for us to get some valuable points.”

On the other bench, the Kings have struggled to win anywhere recently. The team is just 3-7 in its past 10 games and recently snapped a three-game losing streak by winning 4-3 in Phoenix. However, the team is averaging just 2.5 goals per game over that span – and a mere 1.0 goals per game in the losses.

Los Angeles will not have the firepower to keep up with Boston.

            Pick: Boston

Pucking the trends: Weekly NHL betting trends
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

              HOT TEAM: Washington Capitals

Raise your hand if you thought the 3-1 victory over the Penguins in the Winter Classic was – finally – going to jumpstart this team. Yeah, us too.

              We were wrong.

But while the Capitals went through another mid-month slump, losing three consecutive two weeks ago, they have turned the corner of late, and maybe, just maybe, the Capitals are in position to make a statement in the Eastern Conference.

Washington, which plays host to the Rangers on Monday, has won three of four, and has at least one point in all four games.

It’s hard to believe that we are near the All-Star Break, and the Capitals aren’t even the top team in their division, much less the conference. But their defense is tightening up – they have allowed just one goal in three of the last four games – and that’s usually their biggest problem. After all, we all know they can score.

But if they can protect their own zone, and get themselves in full gear by May, maybe that long-awaited Stanley Cup run is finally in store for these guys.

              Stay tuned.

              COLD TEAM: St. Louis Blues

St. Louis wasn’t going to be able to keep up that unreal pace it started the season with. We all knew that. But the Blues, over a six-week period, battled themselves back to the point where they’re – at the least – in contention for the Western Conference playoffs.

St. Louis, which plays at Colorado on Monday, has lost three of four games, and only has two wins this month.

The problem is in their own end. The Blues have allowed at least four goals seven times in January, and at least six goals twice. In a conference that has 14 quality teams, that’s not going to cut it.

              OVER PLAY: Phoenix Coyotes

You wouldn’t think a team whose leader scorer was a defenseman would be a good over bet. But then there are a lot unusual things about the Desert Dogs.
The over is 7-1 in Phoenix’s last eight contests. The Coyotes started the streak by lighting up the lamp, scoring four or more tallies in four straight, but have continued the trend because of poor play in their own end.

Better still, oddsmakers will occasionally give Phoenix 5-goal totals, which is

              UNDER PLAY: Pittsburgh Penguins

The absence of Sidney Crosby, who has missed eight games, hasn’t kept the Penguins from winning this month. It’s just changed the way they win.

Pittsburgh has played under the total in four straight and has been shut out twice in January. The kicker in that scenario is who did the shutting out: The Wild and the Devils did. Wow.

Oddsmakers are adjusting by dealing 5-goal totals for the Pens, something rarely seen for the Penguins over the last few years.

Pittsburgh plays the Islanders on Tuesday.

              SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE:

** Look for the Flyers to have some giddy-up in their legs when they come back from the All-Star Break next week. Philadelphia has a slow week ahead. They will play Florida on Tuesday at home, and then won’t play again until Feb. 1, at Tampa Bay. That’s all the rest of the East needs.

** On the other side of that, look for Nashville to get a little sluggish this week. The busy Predators have three games in four days to round out the season’s first half, including a back-to-back with Edmonton and Calgary, ending on Monday. When they close vs. Vancouver on Wednesday, they will have played six games in an 11-day span. Keep that in mind.

Game of the day: Notre Dame at Pittsburgh
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Pittsburgh Panthers (-10,139)

A battle of Big East basketball powers tips off in Pittsburgh Monday night when the conference-leading Panthers (19-1, 7-0) host the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame (16-4, 5-3).

                THE PITTSBURGH ZOO

Playing at the Petersen Events Center is tough enough on visiting teams, where Pittsburgh is currently 145-11 all-time, including 9-0 against Top 5 ranked opponents.

Adding fuel to the fire is the famed student section at the Pete, commonly known as “The Zoo”.

"The Zoo really helps us out a lot," Pitt forward Gilbert Brown said after helping the Panthers to a 74-66 win over former unbeaten Syracuse last Monday in front of a record crowd of 12,925. "There is a reason why we're so tough to play at home."

                HOW TOUGH?

Despite a 19-0 run to open the game, Pitt found itself tied, 41-41 with less than 13 minutes remaining in the game.

A 24-12 run made it 65-53 in short order. The only question down the stretch was whether the Orange would cover the 6-point spread.

                They did not.

                CRUISE CONTROL

The Panthers cruised to their ninth straight win in an 80-50 destruction of DePaul in Chicago Saturday.

Keying the spurt were seniors Gilbert Brown, Brad Wanamaker and Gary McGhee. Brown scored 17 points while Wanamaker had nine points and nine assists and McGhee controlled the paint with 15 rebounds.

"They're playing really well. I talked to other people in the last couple weeks about how it's rare that the three seniors play this well and it is even more rare that three seniors improve during their senior year as much as they have," said head coach Jamie Dixon.

"All three of them are playing at a high, high level. Their leadership and the way they handle things is beyond the call.”

                ALL IN THE FAMILY

Notre Dame senior guard Ben HanXXXough began his career at Mississippi State University, and played two seasons with the Bulldogs. He averaged 8.8 points over those two years.

Upon transferring, HanXXXough knew that Irish would offer him exactly what he was looking for.

"Obviously you get the best of both worlds here — academically and with sports," HanXXXough said. "Basketball's in the best conference in America, and you're constantly getting national exposure. At the same time, you're graduating from an excellent academic institution."

As a result, HanXXXough has become the de facto leader of the Irish and now thrives on his confidence, and it's that confidence that allows him to play at a high level.

HanXXXough claims his confidence was instilled in him from competing against his older brothers Greg and former North Carolina standout and current Indiana Pacers forward Tyler.

"My brother's had a lot of success," he said. "I would say that I took a lot of his work ethic. Seeing the success he's had and just watching and learning how he got there, you kind of learn how he was successful with his work ethic and his game on and off the court. You just can kind of learn from it, and it's been really good for me to learn from that and see the success he's had from his hard work.”

HanXXXough leads the Irish in scoring, assists, steals and 3-point percentage.

Irish coach Mike Brey raves about how well HanXXXough has let the game come to him this year, instead of searching for shots.

"He makes you believe," Brey said. "He makes his teammates believe. His body language helps us believe we can win."

HanXXXough scored a career-best 28 points and sparked a second-half spurt that rallied Notre Dame back from a 12-point deficit to an 80-75 victory over Marquette Saturday night.

                HEALTHY AGAIN

Rarely will a player affect a game so thoroughly in a modest 15 minutes, but 5th-year senior F Carleton Scott had a huge impact on Notre Dame's 66-58 victory over Cincinnati last Wednesday when he returned from two weeks early from a torn hamstring.

ND coach Brey originally targeted Feb. 3 as Scott’s return date. He stepped onto the court about six minutes in and a 3-pointer helped fuel a 13-0 run that established Notre Dame's control.

"It was like a weight lifted off my shoulders," said Scott, who finished with six points. "The run started before I got in, and that's a testament to what we do here. I just jumped in like, 'Hey, can I get in on it?' And they let me in on it. The shot fell and everything was rolling."

Said Brey: "Just his presence on the court as a leader and a voice really helped the rest of his teammates."

Scott started and played 34 minutes in Saturday’s victory over Marquette, posting a double-double (10 rebounds and 11 points) in the contest.

                Upon closer examination

Both teams have excelled at home this campaign, each going 13-0 in front of the hometown faithful.

Life on the road, however, has been a dichotomy for each of these teams this season where the Panthers are 3-0 while the Irish are 0-4.

Notre Dame, though, enters tonight’s fray sporting a 35-20 spread mark under coach Brey as a conference road dog, including 15-6 versus an opponent off a straight up win and pointspread cover.

                TALE OF THE TAPE

According to *********** College Basketball Statistics, here is a breakdown of how each team ranks among 345 others in three pivotal stat categories, namely Offensive Field Goal Percentage, Defensive Field Goal Percentage and Rebound Margin this season:

                Offensive FG Percentage –
                Pittsburgh 48.5 – No. 14
                Notre Dame 45.2 – No. 89

                Defensive FG Percentage –
                Pittsburgh 40.1 – No. 47
                Notre Dame 41.0 – No. 75

                Rebound Margin –
                Pittsburgh +13.6 - No. 1
                Notre Dame +5.9 – No. 34

                CONSIDER THIS

Notre Dame is 6-5 straight up and 8-2-1 against the spread in this series when the Irish own a win percentage of more than .666 on the season, including 8-0 when ND plays off a win of three or more points in its last game.

                    Daily Sports Roundup: January 24

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Notre Dame meets Pittsburgh on the hardwood, while the Hornets play host to the Thunder, and the Rangers do battle with the Capitals.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up 10 games on Monday, with Memphis at Toronto, Phoenix at Philadelphia, Detroit at Orlando, Cleveland at New Jersey, Washington at New York, Houston at Minnesota, Milwaukee at Chicago, Sacramento at Portland, San Antonio at Golden State, and Oklahoma City at New Orleans. The Thunder (28-15 SU, 22-21 ATS) knocked off the Knicks 101-98 at home in their last game on Saturday, with Kevin Durant scoring 30 points and Russell Westbrook adding 18 points on the night. The Hornets (29-16 SU, 25-18-2 ATS) have won eight straight contests, blasting San Antonio 96-72 at home on Saturday behind 18 points and 10 rebounds from David West. The Thunder have beaten the Hornets in both of their meetings so far this season.

As well, there is one game involving ranked teams on the college basketball schedule for Monday, with No. 16 Notre Dame at No. 5 Pittsburgh. The Fighting Irish (16-4 SU, 8-7 ATS) got past Marquette 80-75 last time out, with Ben HanXXXough tossing in 28 points in that victory. The Panthers (19-1 SU, 8-6 ATS) are currently on a nine-game winning streak and thumped DePaul 80-50 in their last contest; Gilbert Brown had 17 points for Pittsburgh that day. Notre Dame beat Pittsburgh 50-45 when they met last March in the quarterfinals of the Big East tourney; HanXXXough was limited to five points.

                    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are six games on the NHL's schedule for Monday, with Toronto at Carolina, Nashville at Calgary, St. Louis at Colorado, Dallas at Vancouver, Boston at Los Angeles, and the Rangers at Washington. Washington (27-14-8) won 4-1 in Toronto in their last outing on Saturday, as Alex Ovechkin had a hat trick and Braden Holtby stopped 35 shots. The Rangers and Capitals have already met on the ice twice this year, with each squad picking up a win and a loss in the series.

                      **********************************

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend........

                      13) Early line on the Super Bowl: Packers -2.5, with a total of 46.

                      12) Much credit to Mark Sanchez and the Jets, who fought back from a 24-0 deficit on a frigid night in Pittsburgh, and damn near got the ball back with a chance for one of the greatest comebacks in NFL history. Sanchez is a gritty competitor who showed a lot of grit in this game.

                      11) Then there's Jay Cutler, who may very well have a severe injury to his knee, but no one seems to know when got hurt; I'm thinking he has to hobble out there and try to play, until his coaches drag him off the field. Thats what NFL quarterbacks are supposed to do.

                      10) Bill Parcells was first person I heard talk about how passing is easier on icy days, because pass rushers can't get nearly as much traction as on normal days. Makes sense, but it never dawned on me.

                      9) Carson Palmer asked the Bengals for a trade; somehow, I'm thinking full season of having both Chad85Johnson and Terrell Owens as receivers took a toll on him. Palmer says he's set for life financially and can retire if they don't trade him, which is where the Jake Plummer story will scare the hell out of the Bengals. Plummer just up and quit the NFL. when he was still more than talented enough to keep playing.

                      8) Very odd decision by the Jets, who won the coin toss but deferred to the second half; when they beat the Steelers last month, Brad Smith ran the opening kickoff back for a tone-setting TD. Sunday, the Jets elected to kick off-- Pittsburgh scored on a tone-setting TD drive that took 9:06.

                      7) St John's lost by a hoop at home to Cincinnati; Red Storm made only 12 of 26 foul shots, which is hideous for such a veteran team.

                      6) Mountain West passed the SEC in conference ratings this week, which will matter when the bubble teams become more clear. Not sure why the SEC has fallen so far, but the quality of play has slipped pretty far.

                      5) UNLV is struggling with chemistry amid a struggle for playing time; its point guard, Derrick Jasper, played 25 minutes against New Mexico and didn't take a single shot. Doesn't help an offense when the player who has the ball the most isn't a threat to score.

                      4) Hard to believe Kansas State is in a 3-way tie for last in the Big 12. This is another team searching for chemistry and a solid rotation.

                      3) ESPN's announcers can shill for the Big East as much as they like, but I'm having a hard time with 11 Big East teams in the NCAA's; if you can't finish in the top ten of a 16-team league, then go play in the NIT.

                      2) Upsetting day in Horizon League, with Milwaukee beating Butler in OT, sweeping the Bulldogs, while Green Bay won at Valparaiso. Going to be a one-bid league this year, the Horizon is, which makes the conference tournament excellent TV in early March.

                      1) Wisconsin scored over 1.5 points/possession, making 12-26 from arc, in a 78-46 beatdown of Northwestern, the Badgers' first win in its three Big 11 road games. 32-point losses don't bode well for Northwestern when you start talking about getting into the Field of 68.
