    Daily Sports Roundup: January 23

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Packers stay on the road to battle the Bears, the Steelers get a visit from the Jets, and the Pacers head west to take on the Nuggets.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Conference Championship weekend kicks off around the NFL at 3:00pm ET on Sunday with Green Bay at Chicago. The Packers advanced to this contest with a 48-21 blowout road win over the Falcons last weekend, as Aaron Rodgers completed 31 of 36 pass attempts for 366 yards with three touchdown strikes and one TD run. Greg Jennings caught eight balls for 101 yards for Green Bay in that win. The Bears got past the Seahawks 35-24 in their playoff opener last week, as Jay Cutler threw for 274 yards with two scores. Matt Forte carried the ball 25 times for 80 yards on the ground for Chicago that day. Oddsmakers have the Packers pegged as 3.5-point road favorites for Sunday afternoon's NFC Championship Game, while the total for the contest is at 43.5.

The AFC Championship Game is then set to kick off at 6:30pm ET on Sunday, with the Steelers playing host to the Jets. Pittsburgh dispatched rival Baltimore in the Divisional Round of the playoffs last week, winning 31-24 behind 226 yards and two touchdowns from Ben Roethlisberger. Rashard Mendenhall ran for 46 yards and two scores for Pittsburgh in that contest. The Jets took care of business against the favored Patriots last week, grabbing a 28-21 road win in Foxboro. Mark Sanchez passed for 194 yards and three touchdowns for New York in that matchup, while Shonn Greene ran for 76 yards and a score. Oddsmakers don't like the Jets' chances of pulling off another upset on Sunday, as they're set as 3.5-point road underdogs in Pittsburgh. The total sits at 39.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA puts just one game up against the NFL playoffs on Sunday, with Indiana at Denver. The Pacers played host to the Nuggets back on November 9, scoring 54 points in the third quarter and winning 144-113 as a 1-point home underdog. Mike Dunleavy poured in 31 points for the Pacers in that contest, while Darren Collison was good for 29 points, and Tyler HanXXXough chipped in with 20 points off the bench. Ty Lawson had a team-high 19 points in the loss for the Nuggets, and Carmelo Anthony added 13 points.

There are then two games involving ranked teams on the college hoops schedule for Sunday, with No. 18 Wisconsin at Northwestern, and South Florida at No. 21 West Virginia. The Mountaineers (12-5 SU, 5-8 ATS) were beaten 75-71 at home by Marshall last time out, with Casey Mitchell tossing in 18 points for West Virginia in that defeat. John Flowers added 16 points in the losing cause. West Virginia and South Florida last met in January 2010, with the Mountaineers pulling out a 69-50 road win in that contest.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, the NHL offers up five games on Sunday, with Philadelphia at Chicago, Buffalo at the Islanders, Atlanta at Tampa Bay, Nashville at Edmonton, and Florida at New Jersey. The Panthers and Devils just met in Florida on January 15, with the home side picking up a 3-2 overtime victory as a -170 favorite. Dmitry Kulikov had the winner for the Panthers in that contest, while Evgeny Dadonov and Dennis Wideman scored in regulation time. Scott Clemmensen made 33 saves for Florida. Nick Palmieri and David Clarkson had the goals in the loss for the Devils, and Martin Brodeur stopped 19 shots.

Bettors' best friend: Sunday's wagering tips

      Weather to watch

Both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears are familiar with nasty weather for home games. However, both cities are forecasted for cold temperatures, but no precipitation for Sunday’s conference championship games. Then again, with these two cities, you never know.

      Who’s hot

NHL: Nashville Predators have seen the over go 9-2 in their past 11 overall.

NCAAB: Butler Bulldogs have seen the over go 6-2 in their past 8 home games.

NFL: New York Jets are 12-4 ATS in their past 16 road games.

      Who’s not

NBA: The Indiana Pacers have seen the under go 10-4 in their past 14 games.

NHL: Atlanta Thrashers are 1-10 in their past 11 games against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

NCAAB: North Carolina State Wolfpack have seen the under go 10-4 in their past 14 ACC games.

NFL: Green Bay is 1-5 ATS in its past six playoff games as a favorite.

      Key stat

26 – Career 30-point, 15-rebound games for Magic center Dwight Howard. Since Howard entered the league in 2004, only Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph has at least half as many at 16. Howard had 31 points and 19 rebounds in a win over the Raptors on Friday and has done it twice in his past five games.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Marc Savard, Boston Bruins – The center suffered a head injury for the second time in a week when he went flying into the boards as he was racing for a loose puck against Colorado defenseman Matt Hunwick. Savard had 10 goals and 33 points last year in just 41 games for Boston. But this season, he has been limited by numerous injuries and has a mere two goals and eight assists in 24 games. Losing him really hurts Boston’s versatility and depth. His time table to return is unknown as he flew back to Boston after the win over Colorado on Saturday.

      Game of the day

New York Jets at Pittsburgh Steelers (-3.5, 38.5)

      Notable quotable

"We saw some of those plays, like in the Ravens game, he's out there hitting Dawan Landry in the back, he came across and hit Ray Lewis in the back. Ed Reed was 30 yards downfield and he's going down and hitting him. It's just unnecessary things like that that make you mad as a defender." – Jets safety Eric Smith on playing Steelers receiver Hines Ward.

      Tips and notes

      - Milwaukee Bucks swingman Carlos Delfino was activated for Friday night's game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. In the 102-88 win, he finished with 9 points on 4-of-11 shooting in a little over 22 minutes. Delfino has been suffering from concussion-like symptoms and had not played since Nov. 6. He has played in only six games this season, averaging 12.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists, and is the team’s top perimeter threat and one of it's toughest players when healthy.

      - The Colorado Avalanche might have an answer to their recent woes: Peter Forsberg. Seriously. The Swedish legend took the ice on Saturday along with injured Avs forward Ryan O'Reilly, testing his oft-injured ankles by taking part in several shooting drills. A two-time Stanley Cup champion and 2003 league MVP, Forsberg practiced for 45 minutes with the 20-year-old O'Reilly, who is nursing a shoulder injury. Forsberg, 37, is weighing the merits of a comeback. The forward has not played in the NHL since a nine-game stretch with the Avalanche in the 2007-08 season.

      - The NBA has yet to approve a trade between the Dallas Mavericks and Toronto Raptors as it is involving the possibility of an illegal side deal. Toronto bought out the contract of small forward Peja Stojakovic on Thursday, making him a free agent after he cleared waivers. He instantly committed to Dallas, but the Mavericks needed to open up a roster spot to add Stojakovic. Dallas then traded center Alexis Ajinca, a second-round pick and cash to Toronto for the rights to Georgios Printezis, actions which led other teams in the league to believe this was all a pre-conceived arrangement, which is illegal. The league is investigating the moves.

      - Keep an eye on Chris Tillman. The Chicago Bears safety practiced on Friday, taking the field for the first time since injuring his hip in last week's win over Seattle. Harris has said that he is not 100 percent and if he doesn't feel comfortable during warm-ups, he'll be forced to sit out."I'm going to go out there and go. If it happens to bother me me to a significant extent, then absolutely, I definitely would come out the game," Harris said. "I wouldn't try to play tough guy for my own gratification to say I played in the NFC championship game. In 16 regular-season games for Chicago, Harris made 70 tackles and tied for the team lead with five interceptions.

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          NBA

Indiana Pacers at Denver Nuggets (-8.5, 215.5)

It seems like a lifetime ago when the Pacers were the NBA’s top road team, posting a surprising win at Miami and looking poised to be a playoff dark horse. Indiana started the year 5-1 away from the Hoosier state, but since has gone 1-12 on the road. Overall, the team is 3-8-1 ATS in its past 12 road games.

“Our goal at the beginning of the season was to make the playoffs,” Pacers forward Jeff Foster said. “We still have an opportunity to do that. If we start winning games and playing together, that’s a distinct possibility.”

Denver is 7-3 SU and 6-4 ATS in its past 10 games against the Pacers, even including a 144-113 blowout loss in Indiana in November. And while Denver isn’t playing like a championship contender, the team is 4-2 SU and ATS in its past six overall.

The Nuggets also have the third-most home wins in the league, posting a 19-5 record as the team averages more than 110 points per game on its own hardwood, nearly three more per game than any other team in the league.

          Pick: Denver

          NCAAB

Wisconsin Badgers at Northwestern Wildcats (+1, 132)

Think of this one as an appetizer for Green Bay-Chicago a little later in the afternoon. In fact, the game was actually moved up 30 minutes to help accommodate fans who also wanted to watch the NFC title game.

And just like the two nearby football teams, this Big 10 matchup has been an interesting rivalry. Wisconsin is 8-2 SU but just 4-6 ATS in its past 10 games against Northwestern. The Wildcats also are making noise to earn their first NCAA Tournament bid. The team has won four of its past five games thanks to an improved defense.

Mixing in a man-to-man set with its traditional 1-3-1, the Wildcats have held each of their past four opponents to 71 or fewer points. Nothing spectacular, but for a team that has issues stopping anyone, it’s a huge step in the right direction.

Coach Bill Carmody was especially pleased in the team’s most recent outing, a 98-55 win over SIU-Edwardsville.

"We've got some guys who are pretty good players come in there and get some time," Carmody said. "I told them when you get out there, don't look like a scrub; look like you belong there. And they did a nice job."

Meantime, Wisconsin has failed to score more than 70 points eight times in its past 10 games. And with Northwestern’s improving defense, it should happen for a ninth time in 11.

          Pick: Northwestern

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffalo Sabres at New York Islanders (+120, 5.5)

It’s tough to find a team that needs a win as bad as the Buffalo Sabres.

The resurgent squad from upstate New York was 7-2-1 in its past 10 games, clawing to within 7 points of a playoff berth. But in the team's most recent game, the Islanders gave Buffalo a loss for the third time this year, winning by a combined total of 13-7.

"I didn't like the start of the game, not at all," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said of the team’s 5-2 loss to the Islanders on Friday. "I didn't like our first shift. It wasn't good enough."

But lately, the Sabres have been good enough. Buffalo has notched 10 power play goals in its past 10 games and is clicking along at 18.8 percent on the man advantage, the 12th-best mark in the league.

Buffalo also has received strong play from left wing Thomas Vanek. The Austrian has five goals and nine assists in his past nine games and has registered at least two points in the past four. Overall, he leads the team with 39 points on 18 goals and 21 assists.

"We've been doing a better job of traffic, getting pucks around the paint and getting rewarded with rebounds," said Jason Pominville. "Thomas and Drew
[Stafford] have been working good down low, creating those chances. Thomas has always been so good in front and it's nice to see him putting them away."

He should keep putting them away against the Islanders. This time, thought, it will result in a win.

                Pick: Buffalo

Florida Panthers at New Jersey Devils (-115, 5)

So who will get the start for New Jersey?

Johan Hedberg stopped 26 shots in a 3-1 win over Philadelphia on Saturday and has started six games this month. However, the Moose has hardly supplanted Martin Brodeur between the pipes. Brodeur has battled several injuries this year and received the day off on Saturday to rest up. And the last team to beat the future Hall of Famer?

                The Panthers.

Florida posted a 3-2 overtime win on January 15, netting three goals on just 22 shots. The Panthers also are the only team to topple the Devils in their past five games. In the team’s past four meetings, Florida has come out on top, with two of the wins coming by a single goal. But close games are nothing new to the Panthers.

The team has gone past regulation in each of its past four games and five of six overall. However, the Panthers are good at taking the early lead, jumping out to a two-goal advantage in seven of their past 11 games.

“You feel it’s going to turn and you try to at least stay positive as long as possible,” Brodeur said. “Every night we go out there and battle just to try to compete and get ourselves back on track. We know we’ve dug ourselves a hole that will be almost impossible to get out of, but we have to make our game better.”
It will get better. But not against the Panthers.

                Pick: Florida
