Line to keep an eye on

Memphis Grizzlies at Milwaukee Bucks (-3, 185) – The Bucks are currently playing without John Salmons, who missed his second straight game Friday, and just welcomed back Carlos Delfino from a two-month absence. If Delfino shows that he is ready to contribute and Salmons returns from injury, the Bucks gaining about 25 points per game could push them from a three-point favorite to possibly higher.

    Weather to watch

Both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears are familiar with nasty weather in their home fields. Both cities are forecasted for cold temperatures, but no precipitation for Sunday’s conference championship games, but one should never rule out Mother Nature making the playing conditions even worse.

    Who’s hot

NBA: The Los Angeles Clippers are 6-0 ATS in their last six home games.

NHL: The over is 6-1 in the Phoenix Coyotes last seven games.

NCAAB: Syracuse is 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games against teams with a road winning percentage better than .600.

NBA: Los Angeles Clippers guard Eric Gordon is averaging 27.3 points per game in his last eight contests.

    Who’s not

NBA: The Miami Heat are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games as a favorite of 11 points or more.

NHL: The San Jose Sharks are 1-6 in their last seven home games.

NCAAB: Kansas State is 1-7 ATS in their last eight games overall.

NHL: Chicago Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews has just five points in his last 10 games.

    Key stat

79 – The total number of man-games lost by the New York Rangers regular forwards this season. Marian Gaborik, Chris Drury, Erik Christensen, Ryan Callahan and Alex Frolov have all already missed significant time. Brandon Dubinsky and Ruslan Fedotenko recently were injured and will miss a few weeks and New York may also be without forward Brandon Prust for Saturday’s game against Atlanta.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Tyrus Thomas, Charlotte Bobcats – Charlotte’s athletic forward will miss up to eight weeks with a torn lateral meniscus. The 24-year-old Thomas is averaging a career-high 11.1 points, as well as 5.8 rebounds this season for the Bobcats, but he will be missed even more on the defensive end, as the 6-foot-10 Thomas is quick and has a good jumping ability, allowing him to alter a lot of shots and create turnovers.

    Game of the day

No. 7 Villanova Wildcats at No. 3 Syracuse Orange (-5, 139)

    Notable quotable

"I spent a lot of time on it this offseason. Once I made the decision to come here and realized we had a low-post threat, I kind of backed off a little bit. With [Chris Bosh], he's been our outlet. With him being out, I can go back to it. I just have to dust it off a little bit. It's no problem." – Miami Heat forward LeBron James, on his low-post moves that he may start using with power forward Chris Bosh sidelined with an ankle injury.

    Tips and notes

Chicago Bulls power forward Carlos Boozer participated in Friday’s practice and said he felt good after. He expects to play in Saturday’s game against Cleveland after missing three straight games with an ankle injury. Boozer is averaging 20.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game and he should have a field day against the lowly Cleveland Cavaliers.

Pittsburgh Steelers starting cornerback Darren McFadden and safety Troy Polamalu practiced Friday for the first time this week. McFadden is dealing with an abdominal injury suffered during last week's win over the Baltimore Ravens, while Polamalu is nursing an Achilles’ tendon injury he has had for weeks. McFadden said that he will see how he feels Saturday before making a decision on his playing status for Sunday's AFC championship game against the New York Jets. If he does not play, nickel back William Gay will get the nod. Polamalu is listed as probable and expected to play Sunday.

The Detroit Red Wings signed goaltender Evgeni Nabokov to a one-year, $570,000 deal on Thursday night. He posted a 293-178-29-37 career record with a 2.39 goals-against average in 10 NHL seasons. The 35-year-old Nabokov is not officially Detroit property yet, as he has to clear waivers. Teams have until noon on Saturday to claim him, but if he stays with Detroit it could serve as a wake-up call to Jimmy Howard. While the young netminder isn’t in jeopardy of losing his job, having a proven veteran looming over your shoulder should provide a spark for Howard to improve his play.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best basketball bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      NBA

Boston Celtics at Washington Wizards (+6, 193)

Sure, the Wizards are 0-20 on the road. But at home at the Verizon Center? Now that’s a different story entirely.

At the Phone Booth, the team is 12-8, posting wins over Utah, Portland and Memphis. Washington also has one-point losses to Miami and Orlando on their own court. Think the sharps don’t know this? The line already has been bet down since it opened at 6.5 points.

Boston will be playing the second of back-to-back games after a matchup with Utah in Boston on Friday. It also will be the team’s third game in four days, something that could take a toll on the veteran-laden lineup, especially with the big minutes being seen by Shaquille O’Neal at center. And the Celtics already have made it clear they don’t worry about style points.

With forward Kendrick Perkins rehabbing his knee injury, Kevin Garnett still a bit limited by a lower body injury, guard Delonte West on the shelf with a broken hand and forward Jermaine O’Neal out indefinitely due to a bum knee, the team has been forced deep into its bench. The results? A 3-6-1 ATS record in its past 10 games. In their past 10 victories, the Celtics are just 4-5-1 ATS.

      Pick: Wizards

      NCAAB

Tennessee Volunteers at UConn Huskies (-7, 141.5)

Think a high-pressure, up-tempo system is going to give the Huskies trouble? Think again. UConn already has beaten Villanova, which plays a similar style, and will be no stranger to the strategy Bruce Pearl will bring to Storrs.

And that’s because UConn coach Jim Calhoun used to see it every year – against Boston College. Before Calhoun took over UConn, he was the head man at Northeastern for 14 years. Each season, the Boston area school faced the Eagles, coached by Tom Davis, Bruce Pearl’s mentor.

"It won't take Jim Calhoun very long to watch us on tape and know exactly what we're trying to do and know how to take it away," Pearl said. "He's a Hall of Fame coach. He will be able to look at us and see our strengths and know our weaknesses."

Pearl also compared UConn’s Kemba Walker to Devan Downey, the graduated star on South Carolina last year. In two games against the Vols last season, Downy notched 41 points, had just four turnovers and went 18-of-20 from the free-throw line. And Walker’s even better.

"Downey is playing in Europe," Pearl said. "Walker is a (NBA) lottery pick."

      Pick: UConn

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Colorado Avalanche (-115, 5.5)

If the Avalanche get any worse injury news, the team will get a M*A*S*H* unit number. The team took another huge hit this week when it was announced center Tomas Fleischmann would miss the rest of the season with two blood clots in his lungs.

In 45 games, he had 31 points on 12 goals and 19 assists, but had notched 21 of those points in 22 games since joining the club and taking the pivot spot on the team’s top line. Now, Colorado coach Joe Sacco must find a replacement for not only Fleischmann, but also Ryan O’Reilly as he tries to light a fire under forward T.J. Galiardi.

O’Reilly, one of the team’s top penalty killers and face-off men, has a shoulder injury and should miss the next two weeks. Galiardi, a natural winger, tried to take his spot in the middle of the third line, but struggled so badly he was demoted. Galiardi was slated to rejoin the team to replace Fleischmann, but it remains uncertain if he will play or draw the dreaded “healthy scratch.”

Meanwhile, Colorado has seen the under go 5-5 in its past 10 games. And the Avalanche simply lose when they can’t score. The team has totalled seven goals in its past five loses, including two shutouts. In its five past wins, the team has tallied 21 times.

Boston will be the better team on Saturday – 6-3-1 in its past 10 – and plays some of the best defense in the league.

        Pick: Under

Los Angeles Kings at Phoenix Coyotes (-130, 5)

It really is a barren desert for the Kings when they visit Phoenix.

Los Angeles is a dreadful 7-22-2 in its past 31 trips to Arizona. Overall, the Kings have dropped their three meetings this season with the Coyotes by a combined score of 12-5, including a 2-0 loss in California on Thursday night.

Los Angeles has lost 10 of 12 overall and couldn’t score if they could pick the puck up and throw it into the net. The Kings also have failed to notch a power-play goal in each of their past six games.

"Right now, it seems everything is going the other way for us," Kings forward Anze Kopitar said. "We're going to break through, and we're going to break through with playing 60 minutes and competing hard every time, just playing the way we can."

Phoenix has continued a run of resurgent play by going 7-2-1 in its past 10 games and has netted at least two goals in each of its past seven.

        Pick: Phoenix

Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Capitals at Toronto Maple Leafs (115, 5.5)

Washington’s superstars, Alexander Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, seem to be waking up offensively. Does that spell trouble for the Leafs?

          The roller-coaster ride continues

A week ago, things looked like they were heading in the right direction for the Maple Leafs, having won four games in a row while playing solid two-way hockey.

Fast forward seven days and thing are not so encouraging.

Toronto went on to lose its next three games, scoring only two goals in the process. The skid ended with a 7-0 thumping at the hands of the New York Rangers.

The Maple Leafs had sent hot goalie James Reimer down to the AHL after a loss to Phoenix, but the offense seemed to also go down with him.

          Two buds continue to bloom

The only constant for Toronto is the play of linemates Clarke MacArthur and Mikhail Grabovski. MacArthur has 12 points in his last 10 games and leads the team with 40, while Grabovski has six goals and in his last nine games and leads the club with 20 tallies.

All-Star Phil Kessel continues to go hot and cold, with no points during the losing streak and no goals in four straight games.

The Leafs rebounded with a 5-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks Thursday in which MacArthur and Grabovski contributed five points, so perhaps they’re poised for another good stretch.

Washington winning in an unfamiliar way

The trouble for the Leafs is that Washington isn’t exactly the easiest team to win against. While much of the storyline surrounding the Capitals is the struggles of the team (and superstar Alexander Ovechkin) in the offensive department – they’re fourth in goals scored in their own division – the fact is that the Capitals are one point out of the Southeast Division lead and have the fourth-most point in the conference.

The Capitals have been getting it done on defense, allowing fewer than two goals per game over their last 16, with goaltender Semyon Varlamov taking hold of the No. 1 role. The 22-year-old netminder has allowed more than two goals just twice over his last nine contests and is solidifying the back end.

Caps’ big stars starting to shine

While Ovechkin hasn’t been the juggernaut we’ve seen in past years (he has just 16 goals on the season), he is still on a point-per-game pace, which is considered a success for 95 percent of the players in the league. His running mate, center Nicklas Backstrom, is also below his projected output with just 44 points in 48 contests.

But the dynamic duo has shown some signs of its old form recently, as Backstrom broke a 21-game scoring drought in Thursday’s win over the New York Islanders and Ovechkin scored the game-tying goal in Tuesday’s overtime loss to Philadelphia.

The pair combined for six points in the last two games and may have found a suitable third leg in grinder Jason Chimera, who has a point in both games since being put on the top line.

While Washington is still dealing with a struggling Mike Green, who has just 21 points in 41 contests, and injuries to Alexander Semin and Eric Fehr, the fact that Ovechkin and Backstrom are coming to life could spell trouble for Toronto.

          History

The two teams are surprisingly even in head-to-head matchups, with each team winning five of the last 10 games. The two meetings this season were in Washington, with each team exchanging 5-4 shootout victories.

The red light usually is put to work when these teams face off. The over is 4-0 in the last four meetings between these squads.

Calgary Flames at Vancoucer Canucks (-230, 5.5)

Canada’s top team looks to feast on one of its weakest in this Western Conference tilt.

          Canucks cooling down?

The Vancouver Canucks have finally hit a slump, by their standards. The Canucks lost in regulation on Jan. 13 and now have failed to get two points in four of their last five contests, including three straight defeats.

The offense has slowed down slightly, with Vancouver scoring just six goals over this stretch, including two shutouts.

Henrik Sedin has just two points during the downturn and neither he nor brother Daniel have a multiple-point game since a win over Washington on Jan. 14th.

          Special teams flailing

A big reason for the slide is the ineffectiveness of the power play. Vancouver has been operating close to a 24 percent clip with the man advantage this season, but is just 4 for 26 in its last seven games, down to 15.4 percent.

The penalty kill is also in a rut, as the Canucks have killed just 16 of their last 23 shorthanded situations for a 69.5 percent rate - well below their season average of 83.5 percent.

No matter how talented the Canucks are, having a decided disadvantage on special teams is a recipe for this mini-skid to turn into a prolonged slump.

          Flames floundering

If only the Calgary Flames could face Ontario teams every game. Calgary has lost six of eight, with its only two wins coming against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators. Unfortunately, the Flames don’t play Toronto again and face Ottawa just once the rest of the year, so they may have to start beating the rest of the teams in the league if they hope to have a shot at the playoffs.

Calgary is one spot out of the Western Conference basement, but only eight points behind the final playoff spot. To start gaining ground the Flames desperately need to improve on their defense. In Calgary’s last two wins, it’s allowed three goals. But in the six most recent losses, the Flames yielded an unsightly 28 goals.

Starting goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff has largely been the one to shoulder the blame. Kiprusoff has yielded 20 goals in his last six games, while getting pulled twice in the process. His 2.84 goals-against average and .897 save percentage are the worst he’s had since becoming the full-time starter in Calgary seven years ago.

          Uneven strength

The bulk of Calgary’s problems are coming when the teams are on equal footing. Calgary has killed 24 of its last 27 shorthanded opportunities (88.9 percent), which means it is allowing too many goals in even-strength scenarios. The Flames have been outscored 27-20 when the sides are squared up, a sign that Calgary is getting outworked out a regular basis.

All-Star Jarome Iginla has seven points in nine games, but is minus-7 during that span, while Alex Tanguay and Olli Jokinen are minus-9 and minus-8, respectively. Mark Giordano, one of the team’s leaders in ice time, is the worst on the club with a minus-11 rating since Jan. 1.

Calgary is clearly a less talented hockey club than the Canucks and the Flames will need to win the special teams battle to have a shot at winning the game. But if they continue to get beaten this badly in even strength situations, they may have no shot at all.

          History

Vancouver has dominated this Western Canada matchup, winning five of the last six. The Canucks have also won four straight, outscoring Calgary 20-7 in the process.

Calgary also struggles playing at Rogers Arena, as the Flames are 1-4 in their last five trips to Vancouver, while the under is 12-3-2 in Calgary’s last 17 road games.

Texas at Kansas: What bettors need to know
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Longhorns at Kansas Jayhawks (-7, 143)

THE STORY: The Kansas-Texas game usually has a big say in who wins the Big 12, and this season doesn’t appear to be any different. After Saturday’s game, No. 2 KU or No. 11 UT will be the only team still perfect in Big 12 play.

              TV: 4 p.m. ET, CBS

ABOUT KANSAS (18-0, 3-0 Big 12, 8-8 ATS): The Jayhawks played their best game of the season against Baylor Monday, shooting 79 percent in the first half en route to a 20-point road win. Kansas has been accused of playing to the level of its competition – not an uncommon accusation in Lawrence – but seemed to play with an edge Monday. Players said they were motivated by being labeled the “worst 17-0 team in the country”.

ABOUT TEXAS (15-3, 3-0 Big 12, 10-3 ATS): The addition of freshman point guard Cory Joseph has made a world of difference for the Longhorns, who for the last few years have relied on offensively-challenged point guards like Dogus Balbay and Justin Mason or ball-dominators like Avery Bradley. Joseph is averaging 11.2 points and 3.2 assists for a team that now uses Balbay in a role for which he’s more suited – defensive stopper. It hasn’t hurt that freshman big man Tristan Thompson is averaging 13.1 points and 7.7 rebounds. Texas now has a roster that simply fits better than it did during a disappointing 2009-10.

WHO'S HOT/WHO’s NOT: Texas sophomore forward Jordan Hamilton lit up Texas A&M for 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting in the Longhorns’ last game, though he’s been hot all year (19.7 points per game). Tristan Thompson hasn’t been held under 13 points in a month…Kansas’ Marcus Morris has been the Big 12’s best player since conference play began, averaging 24.7 points and 9.7 rebounds in three games. After a hot start, freshman guard Josh Selby has been up and down, scoring five, 14, three and 12 points.

KEY STATISTIC: Texas ranks second in the Big 12 in field-goal percentage defense (37 percent), while Kansas leads the nation in shooting (52.4 percent).

SERIES HISTORY: The Jayhawks lead the wildly entertaining series 17-6, and haven’t lost since a 2008 meeting in Austin. Kansas avenged that defeat in the Big 12 Tournament championship game that season on its way to the national championship.

LOOKING AHEAD: Kansas visits Colorado Tuesday. Texas visits Oklahoma State Wednesday.

LAST WORD: “I feel like nobody gives us any credit. I feel like those games we had close, people really thought we were supposed to lose those games. There was a lot of talk about how we were gonna come down here and lose.” – Kansas forward Marcus Morris after Monday’s big win at Baylor.

              TRENDS:

              - Over is 5-0 in the last five meetings in Kansas.
              - Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
              - Road team is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.

What to watch: College hoops betting TV guide
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ohio State Buckeyes at Illinois Fighting Illini, 12 p.m. ET, CBS (1.5, 137)

The Buckeyes have had one point of emphasis in the New Year: defense. It has finally paid off in a win this week against Iowa, limiting the Hawkeyes to 48 points and just 40 percent shooting as the team turned the ball over a season-high 23 times.

"The beginning of the year, we were playing great defense, team defense,” senior David Lighty said. “We have kind of been slacking the last couple weeks. This week in practice, it was pretty much preparing to play the real Ohio State defense, and I think we came out and did it."

Villanova Wildcats at Syracuse Orange, 12 p.m., ESPN (-5, 139)

The Orange could get a huge boost with the return of guard Kris Joseph. The team’s leading scorer at 14.6 points per game, Joseph hurt his head in the first half of a win over Cincinnati last Saturday. He missed that game and then a loss this week to Pittsburgh. Joseph has yet to be cleared but hopes to play.

                Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans at Florida Atlantic Owls, 1 p.m. ESPN2 (-7, 130)

The Trojans could be without forward Eric Kibi, who is averaging 5.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, the second-highest total on the team. The junior was ruled academically ineligible in early January and has missed the team’s past five games. His status against the Owls will be something to watch closely.

                Kansas State Wildcats at Texas A&M Aggies, 2 p.m., ESPN (-5, 134)

Look for the Wildcats to really struggle against the Texas A&M defense. The Aggies are known for their tough-nosed protection of the rim and the Wildcats will be putting an emphasis on ball movement and passing this week. In three Big 12 loses this season, Kansas State has 28 assists compared to a whopping 60 turnovers.

Stanford Cardinal at UCLA Bruins, 2 p.m., CBS (-6.5, 127)

Malcolm Lee is the new defensive stopper for the Bruins. He flustered BYU’s Jimmer Fredette into seven turnovers, WSU’s Klay Thompson into 6-for-17 shooting and OSU’s Jared Cunningham to a 1 for 9 night. And he doesn’t look to slow down.

"Every day, he goes into practice and works hard and when it's time to guard the best player, he goes out there and gives it all he's got," UCLA guard Lazeric Jones said. "You can't ask more of anyone."

Tennessee Volunteers at UConn Huskies, 2 p.m., CBS (-7, 142)

Volunteers junior Scotty Hopson has switched from chasing guards to forwards on defense the past few games and the Vols have no plans to change him back. The results of the move have Hopson committing more fouls, but being fresher on offense and attacking the rim instead of settling for jumpers. Hopson is still scoring around 16 points per game, but is averaging around three boards more than his 3.4 rebounds per game mark this season.

                Temple Owls at Xavier Musketeers, 3 p.m., ESPN2 (-1, 129)

Injuries have given the Owls an elite weapon. Guard Khalif Wyatt, who started three games this year due to injuries to starters, exploded for 27 points in 30 minutes in a win over Penn. Wyatt finished 9 for 13 from the floor and 4 for 6 from beyond the arc. That’s 10 points more than his previous career best. And with starter Juan Fernandez still wearing a knee brace, expect Wyatt to see plenty of minutes.

Duke Blue Devils at Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 4 p.m., ESPN (22.5, 154)
Wake Forest has lost all four of its Atlantic Coast Conference games and those defeats are coming by an average of 26 points. With the team losing Tony Woods, Tony Chennault and Melvin Tabb to injury or transfer, it has a huge talent gap, as evidenced in a 74-39 loss to Georgia Tech. Just three players made more than one basket for the Demon Deacons.

Texas Longhorns at Kansas Jayhawks, 4 p.m., CBS (-7, 143)
The Longhorns have been an absurd force in the Big 12, winning games in league play by an average of 24 points. The emergence of freshman forward Tristan Thompson has a lot to do with that. He notched 18 points on a wide array of inside moves on offense and collected four blocks on defense. If he keeps soaring, the Longhorns will keep cruising.

Louisville Cardinals at Providence Friars, 5 p.m., ESPNU (6, 157)
Cardinals guard Peyton Siva needs to bring his A-game for his team to succeed. In a one-point win over Marquette, he was just 5 for 10 from the free-throw line with no field goals, four assists and four turnovers. The game before that he posted 10 points, 10 assists and seven steals. As Siva goes, so do the Cardinals.

                Creighton Bluejays at Missouri State Bears, 5 p.m., ESPN2 (-11, 129)

The Bears have no chance to dwell on a 70-69 loss that ended on a questionable, buzzer-beating 3-point play at Indiana State. Now they have a scrappy Creighton squad coming to town and must not focus on the past. Missouri State coach Cuonzo Martin said it won’t be a concern for his team – probably.

"I think they're upset and will be down about it, but tomorrow morning we're back to business," Martin said. "I think the best thing for our guys will be to play at home and get one off our chest."

Kentucky Wildcats at South Carolina Gamecocks, 6 p.m., ESPN (7.5, 143)

Look for some roster shifting for the Wildcats. The team already is 0-2 on the road in SEC play and head coach John Calipari is calling his team soft. In fact, he was so disappointed with the play of senior forward Josh Harrellson, he didn’t see the court at all in the second half of a loss at Alabama – and Harrellson still finished with a team-high nine rebounds.

“I was going to give them (Wednesday) off, but we’re practicing,” Calipari said. “Tomorrow will be a brutal day. Bru-tal.”

                Memphis Tigers at UAB Blazers, 7 p.m., ESPN2 (-5.5, 140.5)

Sophomore forward Ovie Soko appears to finally be back from a toe injury. The 6-foot-8 forward missed just one game with the injury but it has hobbled him and on Wednesday, his 12-point and two-steal performance was just his second double-digit output in nine games. For a guy who can play north of 25 minutes, his contributions and development are huge.

Boston College Eagles at Florida State Seminoles, 7 p.m., ESPNU (-7.5, 136)

The Eagles aren’t taking any chances with the snow that has been nagging at the East Coast. The team flew down to Jacksonville Thursday evening and then took a 2 ½ hour bus ride the rest of the way to Tallahassee Friday. This should leave the team fresh and rested for a game that figures to be very physical and close down the stretch.

Michigan State Spartans at Purdue Boilermakers, 8 p.m., ESPN (-6, 131)

What has happened to Michigan State’s outside shooting? In the team’s past six games (dating back to a 67-55 loss at home to Texas) the Spartans have made just 35 of their past 112 triples. That’s just 31 percent, a drop of nearly 10 percent from where the team was shooting the first 11 games.

"I think it is mental," Michigan State junior guard Korie Lucious said."I know we're getting great shots. We’ve just got to know they're going in."

Iowa State Cyclones at Missouri Tigers, 9 p.m., ESPNU (-8.5, 149)

Cyclones coach Fred Hoiberg has been putting in extra time after practice. Following each session, he takes time to work with players on their shooting stroke, fixing problems from footwork to follow through to confidence. He lets his team play freely on offense and that mentality should follow through in a wide-open game against the Tigers.

New Mexico State Aggies at Utah Utes, 11 p.m., ESPNU (-14, 135.5)

Utah forward J.J. O’Brien missed nine games this year with a stress fracture in his foot, but appears to finally be rounding into shape. In an 82-72 win over New Mexico, he had an 18-point, 10-rebound performance on 7-of-13 shooting, including a 3-pointer. He should keep getting the green light.
