    Daily Sports Roundup: January 21

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Kobe and the Lakers visit Carmelo and the Nuggets, while Butler takes on Wisconsin-Green Bay, and the Senators host the Habs.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up 10 games on Friday night, with Detroit at New Jersey, Phoenix at Washington, Toronto at Orlando, New Orleans at Atlanta, Milwaukee at Cleveland, Utah at Boston, New York at San Antonio, Houston at Memphis, Sacramento at Golden State, and the Lakers at Denver. Los Angeles and Denver have already met once this season, with the Nuggets pulling out a 118-112 home win as a 3-point underdog back on November 11. Carmelo Anthony led the way for Denver with 32 points and 13 boards in that contest, while Nene Hilario had 18 points, and Ty Lawson chipped in with 17 points off the bench. Kobe Bryant had a game-high 34 points in the loss for the Lakers.

As well, a light schedule for college hoops on Friday is highlighted by a pair of Horizon League matchups: Wisconsin-Milwaukee at Valparaiso, and Wisconsin-Green Bay at Butler. The Phoenix (10-9 SU, 6-5 ATS) have won four games in a row, beating Illinois-Chicago 74-50 last time out. Rahmon Fletcher had 20 points for Wisconsin-Green Bay that day. The Bulldogs (13-6 SU, 10-6 ATS) will be looking to shake off a 69-64 loss to Wright State in their last outing. Butler got 15 points from Andrew Smith in that defeat. The Bulldogs pounded the Phoenix 75-57 at home when they matched up last season.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are four games on the NHL's schedule for Friday, with the Islanders at Buffalo, Tampa Bay at Florida, Dallas at Calgary, and Montreal at Ottawa. The Canadiens fell to 26-17-4 on the season with a 2-1 overtime loss to the Sabres in their last game on Tuesday night. David Desharnais had the lone Montreal goal in that contest, while Carey Price stopped 37 of 39 Buffalo shots. Canadiens forwards Mike Cammalleri (shoulder) and Max Pacioretty (ribs) were both injured in that game and will be out indefinitely. Montreal has won three of four matchups with Ottawa so far this year.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

      Line to watch

New York Knicks at San Antonio Spurs (-8.5)

Early sharp action is coming in on the Spurs, pushing the spread to -9 at most books. San Antonio has won seven straight games and is 4-3 ATS in that span. New York has lost four games in a row, covering the spread only once during this skid.

      Who’s hot

      - The Boston Celtics have won four straight contests, but are just 1-2-1 ATS in that stretch. They host the Utah Jazz as 6-point favorites Friday.

      - The New Orleans Hornets have won six games in a row, posting a 4-2 ATS record in that span. The Hornets, however, have failed to cover the last two times out and visit the Atlanta Hawks as 4-point underdogs Friday.

      - The Valparaiso Crusaders have won four straight games, covering the spread in all four of those contests – including as underdogs in the last two games. Valparaiso is a 10-point home favorite hosting Wis.-Milwaukee Friday.

      Who’s not

      - The Cleveland Cavaliers are losers of their last 14 games and have managed to cover the spread just twice during this skid. The Cavs host the Milwaukee Bucks Friday.

      - The Ottawa Senators have lost three straight games and are just 1-6-3 in their last 10 outings. The Sens host the Montreal Canadiens as +111 home underdogs Friday. Scotiabank Place won’t give Ottawa much of a home-ice advantage either as Habs fans take over the Sens’ arena every time the Canadiens are in town.

      - The Niagara Purple Eagles have just one win in their last nine games and are 2-4 ATS in their last six games in which odds were available. The 4-15 Purple Eagles are 15-point home dogs to Iona Friday.

      Key stat

20 – The Detroit Pistons are 20-8 ATS in their last 28 games versus Eastern Conference foes. The Pistons are 2-point underdogs in New Jersey Friday.

      Injury not to be overlooked

Al Horford, Atlanta Hawks – The Hawks center could miss at least two games with a sprained right ankle suffered in Tuesday’s win over the Miami Heat. Horford is averaging more than 16 points and 10 rebounds per game while also providing solid defense around the rim. Atlanta is a 4-point home favorite hosting the New Orleans Hornets.

      Game of the day

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (+1, 212.5)

      Notable quotable

"I'm not going to hesitate to lay him out. No question at all. You know why? Because he ain't going to hesitate to crack on me if he gets a chance." – Pittsburgh Steelers corner Ike Taylor talking about facing former teammate and New York Jets WR Santonio Holmes in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game.

      Tips and notes

      - Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson sat out practice Thursday as a precaution while nursing an injured quadriceps. Nelson is expected to play against the Toronto Raptors (+12) Friday, but could give time to backup Gilbert Arenas, who has struggled recently. Arenas is averaging just 5.8 points over his last seven outings.

      - Milwaukee Bucks center Andrew Bogut is travelling with his team to face the Cleveland Cavaliers despite suffering from a virus for nearly a month. Bogut updated his status via Twitter Thursday night. The former No.1-overall pick scored just six points in the team’s win over the Washington Wizards Wednesday.

      - The Florida Panthers, one of the NHL’s worst teams, has grabbed points in five straight games, going 3-0-1-1 in that span. The biggest turning point is actually getting production from their league-worst power play. Florida has netted six power-play goals in those five games. The Panthers take on state rival Tampa Bay at home Friday.

Friday's quiz: Assorted knowledge with the weekend here.........

        13) Jets won in Pittsburgh last month, running opening kick back for TD; Polamalu didn’t play, so this game figures to take a different form. Should be good theater. Can the Jets win without talking all week? Can either of the #6 seeds get to the Super Bowl?

        12) Bears scored one offensive TD in two games this season vs. rival Green Bay- they also ran a punt back for a TD. Packers had 18 penalties for 152 yards in 20-17 loss here in Week 3. Bears are an underdog for the 10th time in 18 games, yet they still got the #2 seed in NFC. Go figure.

        11) Washington Wizards are 0-20 on the road, 5-15 vs. spread, but they are 12-8 at home. How can there be that big a difference between their play home/away?

        10) Mississippi State has a cheerleader who is also a Playboy Playmate; that can’t hurt in the recruiting wars.

        9) Bronx Bombers are so starved for starting pitching that they considered bringing Carl Pavano (American Idle) back on a 1-year deal, but he was smart and re-signed with the Twins. Joba Chamberlain is going to wind up as a starter, or they'll package catching prospect Montero for a starting pitcher. Funny how Bronx GM Cashman publicly distanced himself from Rafael Soriano signing; you don’t see that too often, at least publicly.

        8) Former Wake Forest coach Dino Gaudio is on ESPNU doing studio work- he sounds a lot like Al Pacino. Not a bad guy to sound like.

        7) San Diego Chargers won’t raise 2011 ticket prices, and lowered prices on 10% of seats, in reaction to not selling out three of their five home games this season. Its five been years since last time Chargers raised ticket prices.

        6) Baltimore Ravens’ defense was on the field for 1,116 plays this season; Ray Lewis missed five of them. Five.

        5) Knicks are struggling recently because teams stopped doubling Amare Stoudemire, a tactic that had been leaving outside shooters open for 3’s. Their perimeter guys aren’t so good off the dribble.

        4) NCAA tournament is on basic cable this year, on four different CBS/ Turner channels. Going to be cool to hear Marv Albert call tournament games. Steve Kerr is working some Pac-10 games to get ready for this tourney role. I do hope Charles Barkley takes it seriously; he has gotten lazy in his NBA studio work.

        3) Could it be that Ben Zobrist will be Tampa Bay’s every-day first baseman, or will Dan Johnson platoon with Sean Rodriguez, with Zobrist switching positions? Rays figure to be an interesting team early on, but they’ll be lucky to win half their games.

        2) They’ve already sold 33,000+ tickets for Villanova-Syracuse Saturday, so they figure to break the on-campus record of 34,616.

        1) If you add up the predicted high temperatures here in Albany for Sat-Tues, you get a total of 62, with some snow thrown in. The average high temperature in Las Vegas for those four days? 62. Advantage, me.

                            NBA

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (+1, 212.5)

It was easy to tell the Lakers had decided to take the night off on defense when Mavericks forward Brian Cardinal was blowing by Lakers stopper Ron Artest in a recent loss to Dallas. But in the second quarter?

Los Angeles has been giving up 100 points per game over its past five contests – or about four points more than most nights. Not surprisingly, the team is 3-2 SU but an awful 1-4 ATS over that span. Los Angeles is also is among the league leaders in 3-point defense and watched the Mavericks go a staggering 12-for-26 against them as a thin Lakers bench failed to provide much hustle or close out on shooters.

With an injury to forward Matt Barnes, Luke Walton is going to be getting the bulk of his run. In the loss to Dallas, he was 0 for 5 from the floor and minus-8 in merely 13 minutes. Add in just two points from Shannon Brown and there suddenly isn’t much help coming off the pine other than Lamar Odom.

And don’t expect any sympathy from Denver. The Nuggets score a league-best 107.3 points per game and shoot a stunning 38.6 percent from beyond the arc - the fourth-best mark in the league.

Los Angeles also might be without big man Andrew Bynum. He hopes to play, but still is recovering from a hyper-extended elbow he suffered in Dallas.

                            Pick: Nuggets

                            NCAAB

Sienna Saints at St. Peter’s Peacocks (-2.5, 121)

The last time St. Peter’s beat Sienna, Happy Feet had yet to start dancing at the box office, Shakira’s hips had yet to lie and The CW was still the WB. Ah, March of 2006.

But this version of St. Peter’s plays some of the best defense in the nation, giving up just 59.7 points per game. That’s the 15th-best mark in the country and is the reason why the Peacocks are a stunning 5-1 SU and 3-1 ATS at home. The team also has seen the under go 5-1 in its past six games overall, as it continues to employ its trademark defense.

Meantime, Sienna is struggling to find the form that made it an NCAA Tournament darling in recent seasons. The Saints can’t score, averaging just 68.4 points per game, and don’t play good defense, allowing 70.1 points per game. The team is just 3-3 SU and 2-4 ATS over its past six games.

And even if they haven’t beaten the Saints recently, the Peacocks come to play. St. Peter’s is 3-1 ATS in the team's past four meetings.

                            Pick: St. Peter’s

Dallas Stars at Calgary Flames (-115, 5.5)

What’s so special about the Dallas Stars? Why it's the special teams.

You won’t find a hotter team in the league when up or down a man.

Dallas has gone 6 for 10 on the power play the past two games and 11 for 24 during a current 6-0-1 road winning streak. For the season, Dallas is operating at a strong 20.6 percent clip on the power play - the 10th-best mark in the league.

When down a skater, the team has very few cracks. Dallas has killed off 19 of 20 penalties in its past seven games and has received phenomenal play from goalie Kari Lehtonen. The Finnish netminder is 5-0-1 with a 1.65 goals-against average in his past six starts.

And then there are the Calgary special teams. The Flames are killing off a mere 80.9 percent of opponents man advantages and are coming off a 6-0 loss to Minnesota that saw the team give up yet another score on the penalty kill.

The Stars also have the hottest skater in the league. Dallas forward Loui Eriksson has a 10-game point streak (2 goals, 10 assists) – the longest current point streak in the NHL.

                              Pick: Dallas

Montreal Canadiens at Ottawa Senators (+111, 5)

These two sides are so rocked by injuries, it should resemble an AHL game by the time they take the ice.

Ottawa, which has seen the under go 27-18 this season, averages a mere 2.2 goals per game – the 29th-worst mark in the league. At a team practice Wednesday, the top five players, Jason Spezza, Sergei Gonchar, Alex Kovalev, Daniel Alfredsson and Pascal Leclaire, all failed to practice with injuries. Only Alfredsson and Gonchar are expected to play Friday.

And Spezza, who has been out since suffering a separated shoulder on Dec. 26, has had the biggest impact on his team’s ability to score. Since the injury, Ottawa has picked up only one win and is 2-for-30 on the power play. He isn’t expected back for another two weeks.

Montreal will is also feeling the bite of the injury bug. The Canadiens, who have seen the under hit in 28 of 41 games, will be without forwards Mike Cammalleri, who suffered a separated shoulder earlier this week in a loss to Buffalo. He’s expected to miss a month.

To add to those injury woes, the Habs’ Brian Gionta, Jeff Halpern and P.K. Subban all were slowed during the game or missed a shift due to nagging injuries.

                              Pick: Under

                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
