    Daily Sports Roundup: January 19

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rangers take to the ice against the Maple Leafs, while Ohio State takes on Iowa, and the Lakers head to Dallas to battle the Mavs.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up 13 games on Wednesday, with Phoenix at Cleveland, Philadelphia at Orlando, Utah at New Jersey, Detroit at Boston, Memphis at New Orleans, Washington at Milwaukee, New York at Houston, Toronto at San Antonio, Oklahoma City at Denver, Portland at Sacramento, Minnesota at the Clippers, Indiana at Golden State, and the Lakers at Dallas. The Lakers (31-12 SU, 19-24 ATS) knocked off Oklahoma City 101-94 at home in their last game on Monday, with Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol each tossing in 21 points. Lamar Odom added 16 points off the bench for Los Angeles. The Mavericks (26-14 SU, 19-19-2 ATS) have lost six straight games, falling 103-89 in Detroit last time out. Dirk Nowitzki led the way for the Mavericks with 32 points in the loss to the Pistons.

Nine games feature ranked teams on the college hoops schedule for Wednesday, with No. 25 Cincinnati at No. 16 Notre Dame, No. 4 Duke at N.C. State, St. John's at No. 19 Louisville, Marshall at No. 21 West Virginia, Penn State at No. 14 Purdue, No. 11 Texas A&M at No. 10 Texas, Air Force at No. 6 San Diego State, San Diego at No. 22 St. Mary's, and Iowa at No. 1 Ohio State. The top-ranked Buckeyes (18-0 SU, 7-8 ATS) took over the No. 1 berth in the polls with a 69-66 win at home over Penn State last time out; Jared Sullinger was good for 19 points for Ohio State in that matchup. The Hawkeyes (7-10 SU, 7-9 ATS) have lost five straight games, falling 69-59 in Minnesota last contest. Ohio State knocked off Iowa 73-68 when the teams last met on January 4.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are three games on the NHL's schedule for Wednesday, with Columbus at Florida, Minnesota at Calgary, and Toronto at the Rangers. The 18-21-5 Maple Leafs fell 2-1 in a shootout to the Flames in their last game on Saturday; Mikhail Grabovski had the lone Toronto goal in that contest, while J-S Giguere stopped 32 of 33 Calgary shots in regulation time. The 26-18-3 Rangers are coming off a 3-2 loss to Philadelphia on Sunday, with Wojtek Wolski and Derek Stepan providing the team's markers. The Maple Leafs and Rangers have met three times already this year, with New York winning twice.

Bettors' best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

      KEY TRENDS

The Utah Jazz are 2-7 ATS in their last nine games.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are 1-23 in their last 24 games and 5-18-1 ATS.

The over is 6-1 in the Boston Celtics’ last seven games.

The under is 9-0-1 in the New York Rangers’ last 10 games.

      NUMBER TO REMEMBER: -7

The Clippers are 7-point home favorites tomorrow against the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves. The Clips have been favored in just 12 of their 40 games this season but never by more than five points. It was January of last year the last time L.A.’s other team was giving that many points.

      TIPS AND NOTES

That win over the Knicks wasn’t an aberration for the new-look Suns. Phoenix is returning to its fast-paced, quick-scoring ways thanks to Vince Carter. The former NBA All-Star is reinvigorated playing in a system that calls for him to take 15 to 20 shots and night – even if that means taking a few bad ones. "It's a great feeling coming to a new team and they have that confidence in you," Carter told the Arizona Republic. The Suns are 3-0 against the spread and are averaging 120.6 over their last three games. Phoenix is a 7-point favorite at Cleveland with the total at 215.

Watch the goal situation in Minnesota carefully. The Wild brought three goalies on their road trip because of injuries. Starter Niklas Backstrom, who hasn’t played since New Year’s Eve because of a hip injury, says he’s ready to return and should get the start on Wednesday night against the Flames. But third stringer Anton Khudobin impressed many in Sunday’s shutout win over the Canucks. Backup Jose Theodore still isn’t game ready because of his own hip injury. Minnesota is a +125 underdog against Calgary with the total set at 5.

There’s been some foreshadowing about lineup changes for Cincinnati following its 15-point loss to Syracuse on Saturday. Bearcats coach Mick Cronin said his team got good shots against the Orange but their defense wasn’t up to snuff. “Our defense and rebounding are things we can control and the reason we were undefeated was our defense,” Cronin said this week, according to gobearcats.com. “We had to get back to keeping our focus totally on defense and being a great defensive team."

Cincinnati has gone with the same starting five in all but two games this season so it’ll be interesting to see how the team responds. The Bearcats get three points at Notre Dame on Wednesday.

        Wednesday's six-pack

-- Duquesne forces turnovers on 27.7% of opponents’ possessions, tops in country, which is even more impressive when you realize the Dukes play at the #29 pace in country, so they’re forcing an awful lot of turnovers.

-- Top three teams in offensive rebounding: Pitt-Old Dominion-Kansas State………top three teams in defensive rebounding: Utah State-Drexel-Cal.

-- Top four teams in offensive efficiency: Pitt-Ohio State-St Mary’s-Boston College.

-- Teams that take (not make) the highest percentage of foul shots: Ball State-LIU-Central Florida-Marshall.

-- Red Flag for Duke: Blue Devils are 147th in country in getting to foul line, 220th in percentage of points scored at charity stripe.

-- The eight fastest-paced teams in country are all low-major teams; of the teams we follow here, fastest paced teams are: Providence 9, UNC 10, Washington 15, Duke 16, BYU 18.

        *******************************

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

        13) Since NFL went to 12 playoff teams in 1990, only one #6 seed, the ’05 Steelers, made it to the Super Bowl; the only other #6 seeds to even make it to the conference finals were both in 2008, when Eagles lost at Arizona 32-25, and Ravens lost 23-14 in Pittsburgh. So after one #6 seed making it this far in 18 years, four have made it the last three years.

        12) Since 1997, five #2 seeds have played a conference final at home, an advantageous position. Four of those five teams lost the conference final (’08 Steelers won).

        11) Love watching the Australian Open late at night while I handicap basketball; it’s the only tennis tournament I’ll watch all year, but its become an annual tradition for me. Enjoy how tennis commentators are more honest/direct than in other sports.

        10) Obscure stat of the day: Blake Griffin was 19-24 from floor in his 47-point game Monday. Only one of the 19 hoops was a dunk.

        9) Very strange game at Pitt Monday night, as Panthers raced to a 19-0 lead over Syracuse, but then Orange scored the next 17 points. SU hung in the game for long time, considering leading scorer Joseph didn’t make the trip.

        8) Mets signed pitcher Chris Young; I’m in a 16-team keeper fantasy league (25 guys per team, can draft minor leaguers)-- am guessing Young will go high in our one-round draft next month.

        7) NBA leaders in minutes per game: Monta Ellis 40.8, Rudy Gay 40.4, Luol Deng 39.4, Kevin Durant/Gerald Wallace both 39.3.

        6) Improved college hoop team you’ve never heard of: Idaho, which is 12-6, winning last five WAC games. Can Sarah Palin’s alma mater be a challenger to Utah State for WAC supremacy?

        5) I watch some of these reality shows, some others are pretty stupid; what all of them are helping create is a culture where people can become famous without accomplishing anything, which is kind of sad. Just getting followed around by a TV camera makes you famous, even if you’re a complete jackass.

        4) Over last three seasons, Patriots are 3-4 against the Jets, 32-11 against everyone else. One thing you learn picking games is beware of teams with boffo turnover ratios; sometimes turnovers are a result of that oddly-shaped football bouncing your way more often than not. New England made some mistakes Sunday, and it cost them dearly.

        3) Pitcher Gil Meche retired this week with a mediocre 83-82 career record, and a whopping $52M in career earnings. At age 32, he’s young enough to un-retire in couple years, if his arm feels better.

        2) I’m surprised/disappointed that NFL players/management haven’t sat down to negotiate since late November. Get to work, people.

        1) A sure sign that either I don’t get enough sleep, or this was an epic tennis match; when I went off to work Tuesday morning, there was a match on live TV from Australian Open—I had watched the first three games of that match before I went to bed late Monday night.

                  NBA

Washington Wizards at Milwaukee Bucks (-7, 185)

Enough is enough for the Washington Wizards.

The Wiz have won four straight games at home and bagged back-to-back victories in their last two outings, most recently knocking off the Utah Jazz, 108-101, as 4.5-point home underdogs.

But hanging over Washington’s head is that goose egg in the road wins column. The Wizards are 0-19 away from the Verizon Center with a 5-14 mark against the spread. They haven’t covered in their last four road games, but seemed determined to snap that skid Wednesday night.

"The most important thing is getting passed it and trying to get that zero to a one, getting better and better and improving," forward Andray Blatche told the Washington Post. "I don't know if we just don't believe in ourselves on the road and lose focus. I don't know if it's because we haven't won a game on the road and we use that as an excuse. I don't know what it is, but we have to figure out what it is and change that."

Washington averages 94.4 points per road game, compared to 99.4 at home, and allows opponents to score an average of 102.4 points against while in rival arenas – which is the same amount it gives up as in D.C.

"We've got to set goals and set goals to try to make the playoffs," newly-acquired forward Rashard Lewis told reporters. "We're four or five games out of it and we can set that goal to reach it. Anything can happen, but you've got to stay positive."

Wednesday’s game in Milwaukee may just be the right spot for the lukewarm Wizards. The Bucks are mired in a nasty skid, having lost three straight and eight of their last 10 contests.

                  Pick: Washington

Duke Blue Devils at North Carolina State Wolfpack (+10, 151)

The defending national champs have proven to be human in recent weeks, dropping from their No. 1 ranking and failing to cover the spread in three straight outings.

The Duke Blue Devils are 2-1 SU in that span, defeating Virginia (+21.5) by only four points and Maryland (+14.5) by just seven points on January 9. Sandwiched in between those slight wins is a 66-61 loss to Florida State (+7).

That has the Wolfpack licking their chops heading into Wednesday’s North Carolina rivalry. NC State is happy to be home after two straight ACC road losses and is hoping to build on its recent history against the Blue Devils.

"Morale is good, effort is good, and the energy is good," head coach Sidney Lowe told the News Observer following his team’s loss to FSU. "They're certainly disappointed in the loss, but they understand we really have a lot of games to go, and things can happen."

The Wolfpack have played their state neighbors tough in recent years, posting a 2-3 record versus Duke since March 2007, with a 4-1 mark against the spread in that span. North Carolina State defeated the Blue Devils 88-74 as an 11.5-point home favorite in their most recent clash, back in January of last year.

                  Pick: North Carolina State

                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at New York Rangers (-156, 5.5)

After a goal-scoring flood, in which the Maple Leafs netted 22 total goals over a four-game winning streak, the well has gone dry in Toronto.

The Leafs have mustered only two goals in their last two outings, both losses. Toronto managed 29 shots on goal in a 5-1 loss to Phoenix Thursday then managed 33 shots in a 2-1 shootout loss to Calgary Saturday night.

Leafs backers are hoping to return of winger Kris Versteeg will help wake up the offense against the Rangers and their star goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. Versteeg is currently tied for third in points on the team with 12 goals and 19 assists.

“He’s a guy that controls the play out there a lot, opens it up, plays a lot of different situations for us,” forward Colby Armstrong told the National Post of Versteeg’s ability. “He’s got the puck on a string most of the time, so he’s got the ability to make a lot happen offensively for us.”

New York heads into Wednesday losing three of its last four games. The Rangers have won back-to-back meetings with the Maple Leafs, most recently a 2-0 in Toronto on October 30.

In their last 10 meetings, the Leafs and Rangers have played under the total six times. And, even though Versteeg is expected to return, Wednesday’s game looks like another low-scoring slug fest.

                            Pick: Under

Minnesota Wild at Calgary Flames (-138, 5)

The Flames, who sit second last in the Western Conference, are heating up after a successful four-game road swing.

Calgary captured at least a point in all four of those games, going 2-0-0-2 with the two losses coming in shootouts. The Flames’ most recent game was a 5-4 defeat in a shootout to the Montreal Canadiens Monday. They scored two third-period goals to force extra time, stealing a point in the Bell Centre – arguably hockey’s toughest arena.

"It's a big point," head coach Brent Sutter told the Calgary Herald of Monday’s game. ''I'm not discouraged with this game at all. Actually, I'm proud of how the guys battled back and competed hard to get back in it.

"They played hard to get a point out of here."

The Flames take that momentum back home, where they are a respectable 11-8-0-1. Calgary is also 20-6-2 in its last 28 home tilts against the Minnesota Wild, who are in Edmonton Tuesday before making the trip south to the Saddledome.

                            Pick: Calgary
