    Daily Sports Roundup: January 18

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Penguins take to the ice against the Red Wings, BYU looks for a win over TCU, and the Hawks try to weather the Heat in Miami.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are just two games on the NBA's schedule for Tuesday, with Charlotte at Chicago and Atlanta at Miami. The Heat fell to 30-12 SU and 19-22-1 on the season with a 99-96 loss in Chicago in their last game on Saturday. Dwyane Wade had a team-high 33 points for Miami in that loss, while Chris Bosh picked up 17 points before leaving the game with an ankle injury. LeBron James (sprained ankle) was inactive and remains day-to-day. Miami already took care of Atlanta once this season, winning 89-77 as an 8.5-point home favorite back on December 4. Bosh had 27 points for the Heat in that win, while Wade had 26 points, and James was good for 22 points. Al Horford poured in 22 points for the Hawks in that losing effort, while Joe Johnson was injured and inactive.

The college basketball schedule for Tuesday then offers up a handful of games involving ranked teams, including No. 23 Georgetown at Seton Hall, No. 17 Michigan State at No. 23 Illinois, No. 12 Kentucky at Alabama, and TCU at No. 9 BYU. The Cougars (17-1 SU, 5-8 ATS) are riding a seven-game winning streak, getting 47 points from Jimmer Fredette to blast Utah 104-79 on the road last time out. The Horned Frogs (10-9 SU, 5-8 ATS) are coming off a 79-69 road loss to Colorado State in their last game; Amric Fields tossed in 19 points for TCU in that loss. BYU and TCU met in the Mountain West quarterfinals last year, with the Cougars winning 95-85.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, 20 teams are in action around the NHL on Tuesday night, with Montreal at Buffalo, Washington at Philadelphia, Boston at Carolina, Anaheim at Ottawa, Columbus at Tampa Bay, Los Angeles at St. Louis, Vancouver at Colorado, Nashville at Phoenix, Minnesota at Edmonton, and Detroit at Pittsburgh. The Red Wings are 28-11-6 so far this season, edging the Blue Jackets 6-5 at home in their last game on Saturday night. Johan Franzen scored the winner in overtime for Detroit in that contest, while third-string goalie Joey MacDonald made 25 saves. The 28-14-4 Penguins got past Boston 3-2 on the road in their last game on Saturday, with Sidney Crosby still sidelined by a head injury. Chris Kunitz, Pascal Dupuis, and Jordan Staal scored for the Pens that day.

Bettor's best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

      Line to watch

Atlanta Hawks at Miami Heat: Miami is dealing with injuries to it's "Big Three," as Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and LeBron James are all dealing with nagging ailments. This game is currently off the board and how many of the superstars play will have a major effect on the game.

      Who's hot

NBA: The over is 5-1 in the Chicago Bulls last six games against a team with a winning percentage below .400.

NHL: The Nashville Predators are 7-2 in their last nine games.

NCAAB: The under is 6-1 in Clemson's last six road games.

NHL: Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron has points in eight of his last 10 games, tallying eight goals and six assists in the process.

      Who's not

NBA: The Charlotte Bobcats are 0-5 ATS in their last five games as the second half of a back-to-back.

NHL: The St. Louis Blues are 1-6 in their last seven games.

NCAAB: The Oklahoma Sooners are 1-8 in their last nine home games.

NHL: Washington Capitals defenseman Nicklas Backstrom has gone 20 straight games without a goal.

      Key stat

891 - Number of games that Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara played before logging his first career hat-trick. The milestone came in a 7-0 romp of the Carolina Hurricanes. The 13-year veteran has 118 career goals and his achievement comes when the Bruins offense is firing on high gear, logging 26 goals in their last five games.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Wayne Simmonds, Los Angeles: Simmonds suffered a lower-body injury when he was dragged to the ice in Saturday's win over Edmonton. He did not accompany the team on its recent road trip and it is unknown how long he'll be out. While the winger only has 17 points in 44 games, he provides a lot of energy, toughness and two-way play that teams need to succeed.

      Game of the day

Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins

      Notable quotable

"I was in the fetal position, I hit three parts of my body on that one. For the first time when I went down I heard cheers, I never really heard that one before." - Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade, on the physical and emotional beating he took when he was fouled while shooting in the first quarter of Saturday's loss to Chicago.

      Tips and notes

Chicago Bulls power forward Carlos Boozer missed Monday's win over the Memphis Grizzlies with a sprained ankle and is questionable for Tuesday's game against Charlotte. The Bulls are one of the league's strongest defensive and rebounding teams, but they are already without Joakim Noah and losing Boozer too could be costly against the Bobcats, another solid rebounding squad.

Buffalo Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff changed his lines up at practice on Monday, sliding Jochen Hecht up to the first-line center position, between wingers Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville. While Hecht only has 17 points on the year, the three were briefly united in the third period of Saturday's loss to the Islanders. The result? A goal by Hecht - with assists from Vanek and Pominville.

Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said Monday that Dwyane Wade was probable, LeBron James was a game-time decision and Chris Bosh was doubtful for Tuesday's game against Atlanta. All three are dealing with lower body injuries (Wade a knee ailment, while James and Bosh have bum ankles) and their availability could be limited even if they dress.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No. 18 Michigan State at No. 22 Illinois (-5, 138) (NCAA)

Tom Izzo’s Spartans started the season as the second-ranked team in the nation, but have gradually dropped in the rankings all season. The squad has won six of eight, but all season they seem to lose every game against a highly-ranked opponent, until tipping Wisconsin in overtime last week.

Senior Kalin Lucas has scored in double figures in eight straight games, while Draymond Green and Durrell Summers have been inconsistent for the equally puzzling Spartans.

Illinois also has five losses on its resume, but enters Tuesday’s contest having dropped two straight.

Demetri McCamey has been reliable for the Fighting Illini, averaging 17.6 points in his last five games, but Illinois’ other top scorers, Mike Davis, D.J. Richardson and Mike Tisdale, have not been giving the game-in-game-out effort that’s needed.

As a result both of these Big Ten squads have gone back to what they usually do best – defense. Illinois has held opponents to under 70 points in six of its last 10 contests, while Michigan State hasn’t allowed 70 points in seven straight contests.

The under has gone 5-1 in Michigan State’s last six games, while it is 7-2 in the last nine head-to-head meetings. As the losses continue to pile up for these programs it could do serious damage to these school’s chances at the postseason, so look for both squads to clamp down on defense in an attempt to win.

        Pick: Under

Charlotte Bobcats at Chicago Bulls (-7, 184) (NBA)

The Bobcats had won four games in a row, but have now lost three straight. The Bobcats have top 100 points in just two of their last nine games and will be in tough against the league’s fourth-ranked defense.

The Bulls have won four of five, their only loss coming against the Bobcats in Charlotte last week. Derrick Rose continues to play at an MVP caliber, averaging 26.2 points, 6.8 assists and 4.3 rebounds over his last 10.

Chicago has also held six straight opponents under the century mark and will look to do so against Charlotte.

While the Bobcats won the last meeting on home court, but they have struggled on the road, sporting just a 4-13 record this year. The Bulls are also a sparkling 18-3 at the United Center this season. Factor in that Charlotte is 0-5 ATS in its last five games on the second half of a back-to-back and it seems Chicago should have no problem taming the Bobcats.

        Pick: Chicago

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Capitals at Philadelphia Flyers (-140, 6)

The Philadelphia Flyers are rolling right now, having won six of seven and scoring 27 goals in the process.

Danny Briere is showing his unhappiness with being snubbed for All-Star game, with six goals and five assists over that stretch. The Flyers’ goaltending has also been strong, as Brian Boucher and Sergei Bobrovsky allowed two goals or less in each of the six victories.

Washington, on the other hand, continues to sputter offensively. The former offensive juggernaut has just 19 goals in its last 10 games, going 5-2-3 in the process.

Superstars Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom are at the heart of the struggles, with a combined 13 points over the stretch.

Washington is also getting bit by the injury bug, losing top sniper Alexander Semin and winger Eric Fehr, who scored 21 goals last season and was recently promoted to the top line before his injury.

The teams have split two previous meetings this season, but both games were in Washington. The Capitals have won just seven of their last 27 trips to Broad Street and with the way Philadelphia is clicking it doesn’t look like they’ll pull out a win.

            Pick: Flyers

Montreal Canadiens at Buffalo Sabres (-132, 5)

The Sabres and Canadiens hook up for a divisional battle that has been low scoring as of late.

Canadiens goaltender Carey Price survived a rough stretch at the turn of the calendar and has played well of late, yielding more than two goals just once in his last four contests.

Buffalo’s netminder, Vezina Trophy winner Ryan Miller, has been strong this season but frustratingly inconsistent. In Buffalo’s last three wins he’s allowed just three goals, but in its last two defeats he’s surrendered nine goals.

Miller has recently followed a poor performance by a strong one, so one should expect him to rebound from Saturday’s 5-3 loss to the New York Islanders.

The under has gone 6-0 in the last six meetings between the Northeast Division foes and seeing as neither Montreal nor Buffalo have been scoring a ton of goals recently, that trend should continue.

            Pick: Under

                Tuesday's six-pack

-- Baylor had their all-time record crowd for basketball Monday night, but they went home sad, as Kansas waxed the host Bears, 85-65.

-- Raptors' PG Calderon had weird stat line Monday: 0 points on 0-5 shooting, 5 rebounds, 13 assists, 7 turnovers in an 85-81 loss.

-- Wish Atlantic 14 and MAC had more televised games; tough to get a feel for teams if you never, ever see them play.

-- Watching Kansas State play, its obvious they've got issues with the team's chemistry. Still plenty of time to straighten things out, but if a team's star is at the center of some of the issues, its a red flag.

-- Underrated fact: NBA referee Dick Bavetta is 71 years old, and he is still working games. Thats impressive.

-- Its frustrating to me watching NBA games and seeing players laugh and joke with each other on the court (players on opposite teams). It just makes the games seem a little less competitive.

                ******************************

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts after a long weekend......

                13) We talked a few days ago about betting the Super Bowl blind with a spread of AFC, -4; doesn't seem like such a good idea now that Patriots have been sent packing. Spread figures to be less than 4 now.

                12) Two cold weather conference championship games this week, with local kickoff times of 2:00 in Chicago, 5:30 in Pittsburgh. Five of eight quarters will be played in darkness. In January. All the league wants is good TV ratings- they couldn't care if the fans freeze their butts off.

                11) Texas Longhorns will only have three assistant football coaches back next year, tremendous turnover for a program that had a bad year, but is usually one of the best in the country. Signing Day is two weeks away, February 2, so it'll be interesting to see how it effects recruiting.

                10) Not only do Chicago Bears have three assistant coaches who've been NFL head coaches, they've got two others who were head coaches in the college game. That has to help them.

                9) Amare Stoudemire got his 12th technical foul of the season Monday. NBA players get an automatic one-game suspension after their 16th technical foul of the season, and another one after #18.

                8) Bill Belichick's playoff record before SpyGate became public: 12-2. Bill Belichick's playoff record since he became known as a cheater: 2-3.

                7) Watched my alma mater Albany beat Stony Brook 52-50 Monday in a painfully-tense game that saw Albany score only one point in game's last 9:00 and yet they still won. Excellent example of a game where the teams tried very hard but played terribly on offense. Stony Brook had a kid go 6-13 from arc but they never got him to the foul line, so they had a 1-7 night at the charity stripe, and it cost them the game.

                6) Miami Dolphins finished 29th in NFL in offense this year, so they're changing offensive coordinators. Who did they hire? Brian Daboll, guy who was offensive coordinator in Cleveland, one of the three teams that finished below Miami in offense. Not a popular move in South Beach.

                5) Speaking of Miami, the Heat practiced Monday with their three best players all sitting out with injuries. Must have been very productive.

                4) Four of the world's top five golfers are competing this weekend, but not in the Bob Hope Classic- they're going to the Abu Dhabi Classic, a European Tour event that I'm assuming includes appearance fees.

                3) Arizona Cardinal WR Larry Fitzgerald was at the Suns-Knicks game in Manhattan Monday afternoon, then he was at the Syracuse-Pitt game that night, to see his alma mater. Young man must love his basketball.

                2) Team like Baylor Bears has talent, but when you rank 273rd out of 345 teams in country in turnover percentage, you're not going to beat a team like Kansas- you can't waste possessions and beat a better team.

                1) It is worth the price of the NBA Full Court package just to watch Blake Griffin and the Clippers-- he's really good-- scored 47 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as Clips won their fifth straight at home Monday. Listening to Clipper TV announcers gush over him is priceless.
