Notre Dame-St. John's meet for 2nd time in 8 days

NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH (14-3, 3-2 in Big East)

at ST. JOHN'S RED STORM (10-5, 3-2 in Big East)

    Tip-off: Sunday, 12:00 p.m. EDT
    Line: St. John’s -2.5

Notre Dame tries to snap a two-game skid while aiming for its first road win of the season when it visits St. John's at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. This will be the second meeting between these two teams in eight days, as the Irish beat St. John’s 76-61 in a game they led 44-25 at halftime.

The Fighting Irish hope to rebound from a 79-57 setback at Marquette on Monday. Notre Dame allowed the Golden Eagles to shoot 53.1% and hit 12-of-17 shots from long range. Ben Hansbrough (15.8 PPG, 44.1% three-pointers) scored only nine points on 3-of-9 shooting and had his string of double-digit scoring outputs halted at 10 games. Tim Abromaitis (15.8 PPG, 7.1 RPG, 40.0% three-pointers) chipped in with 10 points, extending his double-figures scoring streak to eight games. Carleton Scott (11.9 PPG, 6.4 RPG) is expected to miss his fourth straight contest with a hamstring injury, but freshman Eric Atkins (7.0 PPG, 3.4 APG) has been a solid replacement in the starting lineup, averaging 10.0 PPG in the past four games. He had a season-best 15 points against Marquette and finished with seven points, five assists and three steals in the first meeting with St. John's.

The Red Storm fell at home to Syracuse on Wednesday, 76-59, as leading scorer Dwight Hardy (15.7 PPG) was only 4-of-15 from the field for 12 points. It marked Hardy's second straight subpar game. He was limited to just eight points on 2-of-5 shooting in a loss at Notre Dame, 76-61 on Jan. 8, which broke a string of four consecutive games with 20 points. Justin Brownlee (14.5 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 34.6% three-pointers) scored 13 points against the Orange for his seventh straight game in double-figures, but he shot just 5-of-13 from the field. Brownlee has hit only 17-of-44 field goals (39%) in his past three games. Sunday's contest marks the Red Storm's fourth straight contest against a ranked opponent. They're 1-2 so far with losses to the Orange and Irish and a victory versus Georgetown.

St. John's was limited to 38.2% shooting in the first meeting, and Hansbrough made four three-pointers, scoring a career-best 26 points in the Irish's win. Abromaitis is averaging 18.0 and 7.5 boards in two career matchups with St. John's. The Red Storm have dropped 33 of their past 36 games to ranked opponents, but two of those wins were against Notre Dame at home. The Red Storm are 4-1 (SU and ATS) when hosting the Irish since 1999. These two FoxSheets trends expect St. John’s to get payback for its loss eight days ago.

Play On - A favorite (ST. JOHN’S) - revenging a same season loss vs. opponent, off a home loss. (129-75 over the last 5 seasons.) (63.2%, +46.5 units. Rating = 2*).

Mike Brey is 14-30 ATS (31.8%, -19.0 Units) off a road loss against a conference rival as the coach of NOTRE DAME. The average score was NOTRE DAME 73.5, OPPONENT 73.7 - (Rating = 2*).

No. 17 Washington looks for rare road win at Cal

    WASHINGTON HUSKIES (12-4, 4-1 in Pac-10)

at CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS (9-7, 2-2 in Pac-10)

    Tip-off: Sunday, 10:00 p.m. EDT
    Line: Washington -8

California looks for its third straight win when it hosts No. 17 Washington on Sunday night in a rematch of last year’s Pac-10 Championship game, which UW won 79-75. The Huskies saw their six-game overall win streak and 11-game conference win streak snapped Thursday in a two-point loss at Stanford.

Despite shooting a season-low 36.2% from the field, Washington had a chance to tie the game with 2.5 seconds left, but Justin Holiday missed two free throws and then misfired on a long jumper as the buzzer sounded. The Huskies led by 11 points with 8:55 left in the game, but couldn’t hold on. A big reason for squandering the lead was the absence of injured point guard Adbul Gaddy, who suffered a torn ACL in his left knee earlier this month. Washington committed 15 turnovers versus the Cardinal and has averaged 12.3 TO per game with Gaddy out. In his final four games, the Huskies only turned the ball over 8.8 times per game. Leading scorer Isaiah Thomas (15.9 PPG) is handling some of the point-guard duties and has 35 assists to just 10 turnovers in his past four games. Thomas scored 16 points in the Pac-10 title win over Cal last year and has averaged 19.0 PPG in five career meetings. Matthew Bryan-Amaning (14.8 PPG, 7.5 RPG) leads the team in rebounding and Holiday is second with 5.8 RPG while scoring 11.8 PPG. Rebounding has been a big factor for Washington this year, as it is 11-1 when winning the rebound battle and 1-3 when getting outrebounded by its opponent this year.

California has also done a great job on the boards with a +4.9 RPG margin, including a +7.0 RPG in Pac-10 play. Markhuri Sanders-Frison leads the team with 8.3 RPG and is scoring 10.3 PPG. Three other Bears are also scoring in double-figures -- Harper Kamp (13.4 PPG), Jorge Gutierrez (12.7 PPG) and freshman Allen Crabbe (10.8 PPG), who pumped in a career-high 30 points in Thursday’s 88-81 overtime win over Washington State. Crabbe has assumed more of the scoring load since starter Gary Franklin (8.2 PPG) announced his intentions to transfer to Baylor. In the three games without Franklin, Crabbe is averaging 21.3 PPG (11-of-21 on threes), which is quite an increase from his 8.4 PPG in his first 13 games.

Although Washington has had trouble winning at Haas Pavilion (2-8 SU in past 10 trips), it is clearly the superior offensive team, averaging 86.8 PPG (3rd in nation) on 48.4% FG (21st in D-I). Cal puts up a mere 67.6 PPG (218th in nation) on 43.7% FG (172nd in D-I). Before their cold shooting night against Stanford -- the Pac-10’s best defensive team -- the Huskies averaged 88.0 PPG on 52.5% shooting in their three previous games, all against Pac-10 opponents.

These two FoxSheets trends also like Washington to win and cover on the road.

WASHINGTON is 7-1 ATS (+5.9 Units) when playing only their 2nd game in 8 days this season. The average score was WASHINGTON 90.1, OPPONENT 65.6 - (Rating = 1*).

CALIFORNIA is 0-6 ATS (-6.6 Units) versus teams who average 40 or more rebounds/game on the season over the last 2 seasons. The average score was CALIFORNIA 67.0, OPPONENT 76.8 - (Rating = 1*).

Purdue faces tough road contest at WVU

      PURDUE BOILERMAKERS (15-2)

      at WEST VIRGINIA MOUNTAINEERS (11-4)

      Tip-off: Sunday, 1:30 p.m. EDT
      Line: West Virginia -2

After seeing its 10-game winning streak snapped, Purdue looks to get back on the winning track at West Virginia on Sunday.

The Boilermakers will look to avoid consecutive losses for the first time since January 9-16 2010, after falling 70-67 at Minnesota on Thursday. Purdue surrendered a season-high 70 points and allowed the Golden Gophers to shoot 52.9% from the field, while the Boilermakers shot just 38.3% for the game. The three-point loss marked only the second time this season a Purdue game has been decided by single-digits (58-55 win at Virginia Tech). The Boilers were led by JaJuan Johnson's (19.9 PPG, 8.4 RPG) team-highs of 29 points and 11 rebounds. Johnson notched his third double-double in six games and reached double figures in scoring in his 26th straight games. E'Twaun Moore (17.9 PPG, 5.9 RPG, 40% three-pointers) is struggling to find his shot after tallying only five points on 2-of-14 shooting with seven assists versus Minnesota. Moore is 9-for-39 (23%) in his past three games for a combined 20 points. Lewis Jackson (6.2 PPG, 4.2 APG) had 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists against the Golden Gophers, marking the second time in the past three games he's scored in double-figures and only the third time this season.

West Virginia is looking for a season-high fourth straight win on Sunday. The Mountaineers are coming off a 93-63 rout of Providence on Thursday behind John Flowers' career-high 24 points. Flowers (8.7 PPG, 6.3 RPG) also added six rebounds, five assists and five blocks, while Kevin Jones (13.9 PPG, 6.8 RPG) finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Leading scorer Casey Mitchell (17.4 PPG, 38.8% three-pointers) chipped in with 14 points for his sixth straight game in double figures and 13th of the season. The Mountaineers have faced only one ranked team all season, winning at Georgetown, 65-59, on Jan. 8. They are just 5-7 ATS this year, while Purdue is a stellar 10-3 ATS. Both of these teams do a great job sharing the basketball, as Purdue ranks 12th in the nation in assists (17.8 APG) and West Virginia ranks 21st (16.6 APG).

The Boilermakers look to become the first non-conference team to beat WVU in Morgantown since LSU won 71-68 in overtime on Nov. 26, 2005. Purdue is 5-0 all-time versus the Mountaineers. Last season, the two teams met in West Lafayette with the Boilers winning 77-62 behind Johnson's 25 points and 10 boards and Moore's 15 points. The Boilermakers are 34-3 in regular-season, non-conference games since the beginning of the 2008-09 season. They've scored at least 76 points in 11 games this season and have won 34 straight games when scoring more than 70 points. The FoxSheets provide three reasons to expect Purdue to walk away with a big road win.

Play Against - Any team (WEST VIRGINIA) - off a home blowout win by 20 points or more against opponent off an upset loss as a road favorite. (74-35 over the last 5 seasons.) (67.9%, +35.5 units. Rating = 3*).

Matt Painter is 18-6 ATS (75.0%, +11.4 Units) after covering 4 of their last 5 against the spread as the coach of PURDUE. The average score was PURDUE 70.1, OPPONENT 60.7 - (Rating = 2*).

WEST VIRGINIA is 2-12 ATS (14.3%, -11.2 Units) when the line is +3 to -3 over the last 3 seasons. The average score was WEST VIRGINIA 68.1, OPPONENT 72.5 - (Rating = 2*).
