Bettors' best friend: Sunday's wagering tips

    Weather to watch

The weather in Chicago will be cold, but not much of a factor when the Bears host the Seahawks. The forecast calls for temperatures in the low 20s, but just a 4-mph wind on a partly cloudy afternoon.

It will be a little warmer in New England with temps in the high 20s, but an expected 13-mph wind will make it feel 10 degrees colder and could have an effect on both team’s passing games.

    Who’s hot

NFL: The Seattle Seahawks have seen the over go 9-1 in their past 10 games overall.

NBA: The San Antonio Spurs have gone 8-3 ATS in their past 11 games overall.

NHL: The Vancouver Canucks are 19-7 in their past 26 games overall.

NCAAB: Notre Dame is 10-3 ATS in its past 13 Big East games.

    Who’s not

NFL: The New York Jets are 5-11-1 ATS in their past 17 games against the New England Patriots.

NBA: The Los Angeles Lakers have seen the under go 22-8 in their past 30 games.

NHL: The New York Rangers have seen the under go 8-0 in their past 8 games overall.

NCAAB: West Virginia Mountaineers are 1-4 ATS in their past 5 non-conference games.

    Key stat

0 – Teams in NFL history who have won a playoff rematch against a team they lost to by at least 32 points during the regular season. The Jets lost to the Patriots, 45-3 earlier this year. Still not sold? Try this: From 1991 to 2004, No. 1 seeds are 9-0 straight-up (8-1 against the spread) against No. 6s.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Toronto Raptors guard Leandro Barbosa left Friday's game against Detroit with a strained right hamstring and had to be helped to the locker room just before halftime. He was scheduled for an MRI exam this weekend and did not travel with the Raptors to Washington. Barbosa is expected to miss up to 2 weeks. The Raptors lead guard was just finding his stride in Toronto, entering the weekend averaging 13.8 points. On Wednesday against Atlanta, he dropped a season-high 26 points.

    Game of the day

New York Jets at New England Patriots (-9.5, 44)

    Notable quotable

"I would totally agree I'm not worth that contract." – Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Vernon Wells, on hitting just .273 with 31 home runs and 88 RBI in the fourth year of his seven-year, $126 million deal.

    Tips and notes

If the Buffalo Sabres have any hope of making the playoffs, they need to find a consistent lineup. The team appears to have a rift in the locker room as captain Craig Rivet was a healthy scratch for Saturday's game against the New York Islanders. The defenseman, who has just one goal, two assists and 12 penalty minutes in 23 games this year, has struggled to find regular ice time and this move could pave the way for a new player earning the “C.” Buffalo is 6-3-1 in its past 10 games, the second-best mark in the Eastern Conference. Coincidentally, it has coincided with fewer minutes for Rivet.

The Detroit Pistons have yet to trade guard Rip Hamilton, but he has not played in the team’s past two games and figures to sit for the forseeable future as the team tries to keep one if its biggest trade assets healthy for a looming deal with the New Jersey Nets and Denver Nuggets. Hamilton, a 32-year-old former All-Star averages 13.2 points and 2.6 assists per game, but can’t help his team by racking up DNPs. "I am mad. Anger as far as now," Pistons forward Tayshaun Prince said. "When I look at it I see so many things he can help us with on the floor now."

The Philadelphia Eagles are in the market for a new defensive coordinator. Less than a week after Eagles coach Andy Reid said Sean McDermott would return in the same role next season, the team has fired him. The Eagles defense was ravaged by injuries this season, but was a hot mess, giving up a franchise-high 31 touchdown passes and had the worst red zone defense in the league.

The NCAA has granted Houston quarterback Case Keenum a 6th-year of eligibility after he missed most of this season with a knee injury. In 2009, Keenum led the nation in total offense (5,829 yards) and yards passing (5,671). Overall, he needs 3,487 yards to break Tim Chang's career passing yardage record (17,072) and is just 28 TD passes behind Graham Harrell's scoring tosses record (134). "It's been a long process," Houston coach Kevin Sumlin said. "I'm out recruiting right now, but obviously, for us, we've got the best recruit we could get for next year."

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Los Angeles Clippers (+5.5, 197)

Beating the Miami Heat was an accomplishment the Los Angeles Clippers weren’t ready to deal with.

The Clippers, fresh off celebrating their big win over LeBron and Co., laid an egg against the Golden State Warriors, falling 122-112 as 3-point road underdogs Friday.

Los Angeles was apparently too fat and happy to play defense, watching the Warriors shoot 52 percent from the field and get a combined 53 points from the backcourt duo of Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry. Golden State punished the Clippers from outside, knocking down 14 of 26 shots from beyond the 3-point arc.

"Give Golden State some credit, they shot it really well tonight," Clippers head coach Vinny Del Negro told the Los Angeles Times. "But our intensity to start the game was not there. I thought it was a little bit better in the second half when we made a bit of a run on them and tied it up."

Los Angeles won’t get any sympathy from their Staples Center neighbors Sunday. The Clippers nearly upset the Lakers the last time they played, losing 87-86 as 7.5-point underdogs in December. That isn’t lost on the other Los Angeles team, which brings a seven-game winning streak into the weekend, going 3-3-1 ATS in that stretch.

      Pick: Los Angeles Lakers

Denver Nuggets at San Antonio Spurs (-7, 211.5)

It’s almost a shocker to see the San Antonio Spurs among the league’s most potent offenses. The always-vanilla Spurs are currently fifth in scoring, sixth in field goal percentage and rank second in the NBA in 3-point shooting.

However, San Antonio’s recent five-game winning streak is built on defense. The team has given up an average of just 89.4 points per game in that stretch, including locking down a shorthanded Mavericks squad to 89 points Friday. The Spurs won that game 101-89, playing under the total for the fifth time in a row.

The Nuggets, who faced the Cleveland Cavaliers Saturday, have played under in 24 of the past 32 head-to-head meetings with San Antonio, including a 4-16-1 over/under record in their last 21 trips to San Antonio.

      Pick: Under

No. 11 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at St. John’s Red Storm (-2.5)

It’s pretty simple for the Red Storm: as Dwight Hardy goes, so too does St. John’s.

Hardy is averaging 15.7 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. On a recent hot streak, he dropped 20 or more points in six of seven games. However, the past two outings – a pair of double-digit losses to ranked teams – he finished with just 20 points combined and failed to crack his season average either team out.

One of those losses was a 76-61 beatdown to Notre Dame in South Bend. In the loss, Hardy was a mere 2-for-5 from the floor for 8 points in more than 30 minutes of action. Because the senior couldn’t find his stroke, the Red Storm struggled to find any consistency on offense, trailed by double-digits 10 minutes in and by 19 at the half.

Overall, Notre Dame is 10-3 ATS in its past 13 Big East games and is 5-3 SU in its past 8 against the Red Storm.

The Fighting Irish are coming off a 79-57 loss at Marquette, but the team already knows it has to refocus on its trip to New York City and won’t be surprised by Hardy or the Red Storm.

“We didn't play like we needed to,” Notre Dame senior captain Ben HanXXXough said. “The road's very tough. In this league, you have to learn how to bounce back.”

          Bounce they will.

          Pick: Notre Dame

No. 8 Purdue Boiler Makers at West Virginia Mountaineers (-2)

It’s not too often you see a top-10 team as an underdog against an unranked non-conference team. But the Purdue Boilermakers have enough problems that the team may need more than just two points in Morgantown.

The Boilermakers had a 10-game winning streak snapped this week in a 70-67 loss at Minnesota that had the team play some of its worst defense of the season. In fact, it was the most points Purdue has allowed all season. And the Boilermakers just aren’t built to win in a shootout.

Senior center JaJuan Johnson had a monster game with 29 points and 11 rebounds, but E’Twaun Moore, the team’s no. 2 leading scorer, remains in a funk. He made a mere 2-of-14 shots against Minnesota and has made just nine of his past 39 shots overall.

"I had some shots that just didn't go down," Moore said. "They are the same shots I've hit before. It's the same as when I hit seven 3s. They wouldn't fall."

Moore and Purdue will find their rhythm. Just don’t expect it to come against the Mountaineers.

          Pick: West Virginia

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Washington Capitals (-215, 5.5)

The Ottawa Senators look like they have used up all their goals for the next few weeks following a 6-4 win over the Islanders on Thursday.

That victory is Ottawa’s only bright spot in an eight-game stretch that has seen the underachieving team go 1-7. In those seven losses, the Senators have scored a total of nine goals, including getting shutout twice. Overall, the Senators are helping goal judges work on their beauty sleep, averaging 2.2 goals per game – the 29th worst mark in the league. But you have to shoot to score, and the team averages just 28.9 attempts at the cage per night, the game’s 24th worst total.

"They're just mental mistakes," Ottawa coach Cory Clouston said. "And we're so fragile right now that we don't have that resiliency that you need in this league, because you are going to make mistakes. It just seems that when we make them, the resiliency isn't there that we need."

Meantime, the Captials also have struggled to find their scoring touch, seeing the under go 7-2-1 in their past seven games overall.

This game won’t be pretty to watch, but the under should be pretty to your bank roll.

            Pick: Under

Philadelphia Flyers at New York Rangers (-115, 5.5)

The hottest line in the NHL isn’t in Vancouver, Washington, Colorado or Detroit.

The top combination in the league is located on Broad Street. Daniel Briere, Scott Hartnell and Ville Leino have combined for a staggering 17 goal and 16 assists in the team’s past nine games. And the group is showing an uncanny connection on the ice. In a 5-2 win over Atlanta, the trio combined for the game-winner late in the third when Hartnell’s shot was tipped by Leino to a wide open Briere who banged home the goal into an empty net due to the fantastic puck movement.

"Scotty just tried to put it on net, and both me and Ville kind of snuck behind their defenseman," said Briere. "It was a nice redirection by Ville, backdoor to me. He knew I was waiting there."

The group will look to continue its hot play against the Rangers, a team it has owned this year to the tune of a pair of 4-1 wins. Don’t expect them to cool off now.

            Pick: Flyers

                Daily Sports Roundup: January 16

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Patriots look for a win over the Jets, the Seahawks take the field in Chicago, and the Nuggets head south to take on the Spurs.

                Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Sunday's NFL playoff action begins at 1pm ET with the NFC Divisional matchup between the Seahawks and Bears in Chicago. Seattle pulled off a shocker on Wild Card Weekend, knocking off the defending-champion Saints 41-36 at home as a big underdog. Matt Hasselbeck threw for 272 yards with four touchdowns and an interception for the Seahawks that day, and Marshawn Lynch ran for 131 yards and a score in the win. Seattle is an underdog again on Sunday, with the Bears favored by 10 points at home (and the total listed at 41 points). The Seahawks and Bears met in Seattle back in Week 6 of the season, with the home side picking up a tight 23-20 win.

The Divisional Playoffs then come to an end with the Jets at New England at 4:30pm ET on Sunday. New York held off Peyton Manning and the Colts for a 17-16 road win on Wild Card Weekend, despite Mark Sanchez throwing for just 189 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. LaDainian Tomlinson ran for 82 yards and a pair of scores for the Jets in that victory. New England is an 8.5-point home favorite for Sunday, with the total listed at 45 points. The Jets beat the Pats 28-14 at home in Week 2 of the season, but New England then thumped them 45-3 over in Foxboro in Week 13.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up just two games on Sunday, with the Lakers taking on the Clippers, and the Spurs playing host to the Nuggets. San Antonio and Denver met twice in December, with the Spurs first winning 113-112 on the road as a 1-point underdog on December 16, and then winning 109-103 at home as an 8-point favorite on December 22. Manu Ginobili and Gary Neal each tossed in 22 points for the Spurs in that last matchup, while Tony Parker picked up 11 points and nine assists, and Tim Duncan was held to nine points and nine boards. J.R. Smith and Ty Lawson were each good for 22 points that day for Denver, and Carmelo Anthony sat out the game for personal reasons.

College hoops on Sunday then features three games involving ranked teams: No. 8 Purdue at West Virginia, No. 17 Washington at California, and No. 9 Notre Dame at St. John's. The ninth-ranked Fighting Irish (14-3 SU, 6-6 ATS) were thumped 79-57 on the road by Marquette last time out, with Eric Atkins the team's leading scorer with just 15 points in that defeat. The Red Storm (10-5 SU, 6-8 ATS) are coming off a 76-59 loss to Syracuse at home in their last game, with Justin Brownlee tossing in 13 points on the day. St. John's and Notre Dame have already met once this season, with the Irish winning 76-61 at home on January 8. Ben HanXXXough tossed in 26 points in that win.

                Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are five games on the NHL's schedule for Sunday, with Ottawa at Washington, Vancouver at Minnesota, Nashville at Chicago, Edmonton at Anaheim, and Philadelphia at the Rangers. The Flyers and Rangers last met back on December 18 in Philadelphia, with the home side winning that contest 4-1 as a -160 favorite. Nikolay Zherdev (with two), Andreas Nodl, and Ville Leino had the goals for the Flyers in that contest, with Brian Boucher stopping 24 of 25 New York shots. Derek Stepan provided the lone Rangers goal, while Henrik Lundqvist made 35 saves in the loss for New York.
