Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

    Who’s hot

NBA: New Jersey Nets have seen the over hit in 8 of their past 10 games against the Western Conference.

NBA: San Antonio Spurs are 7-3 ATS in their past 10 games overall.

NHL: Philadelphia Flyers are 8-2 in their past 10 road games.

NHL: Detroit Red Wings have seen the over go 9-3 in their past 12 games overall.

NCAAB: Butler Bulldogs are 7-2-1 ATS in their past 10 games overall.

    Who’s not

NBA: Cleveland Cavaliers are 3-12-1 ATS in their past 16 road games.

NBA: Indiana Pacers have seen the under go 25-9 in their past 34 games overall.

NHL: New Jersey Devils are 5-24 in their past 29 games following a win.

NHL: Calgary Flames have seen the under go 6-1-1 in its past eight road games.

NCAAB: Rider Broncs are 3-11 ATS in their past 14 home games.

    Key stat

53 – Saves in consecutive shutouts of the Islanders and Avalanche for Chicago Blackhawks rookie goaltender Corey Crawford. The first-year player has all-but supplanted Marty Turco as the team’s No.1 option between the pipes. Crawford is 15-8-1 with a 2.14 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Portland Trail Blazers star guard Brandon Roy announced he will have arthroscopic surgery on both of his knees next week. There is no timetable for the All-Star’s return. Roy already missed 16 games this season with his knee injury. Roy is averaging 16.6 points in 23 games this season, well below his career average of 19.9 points and 4.9 assists. "I'm trying to do the best thing I can to get back on the floor," Roy said. "We've been able to get a number of different opinions and it's something we've decided."

    Game of the day

Dallas Mavericks at San Antonio Spurs

    Notable quotable

"She told me she was 19." -- Former NFL star Lawrence Taylor, who pleaded guilty on Thursday to sexual misconduct and patronizing a prostitute. The prostitute was, in fact, a 16-year-old runaway from the Bronx.

    Notes and tips

UFC president Dana White and Chairman/CEO Lorenzo Fertitta were in Madison Square Garden on Thursday to lobby support from officials to get mixed martial arts sanctioned in the State of New York. President of Madison Square Garden sports Scott O'Neil and New York State Assemblyman Dean Murray voiced support for MMA in NY as the group held a rallying press conference. "I'm not going to speak for the Governor, but I did have a conversation with him and he seems open," Murray said. "We've sent a letter and talked to him personally and requested that he include this in his budget proposal.” UFC 128 is slated to go off March 19 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Believe it or not, shootouts are down in the league this season. Way down. Just 10.85 percent of all games this season are advancing to a skater-goalie showdown, the lowest average since the league implemented the tie-breaker during the 2005-2006 season. And not only are games not going to shootouts very often, players aren’t scoring as much when it does occur. Skaters are scoring goals on just 32.38 percent of their attempts – the second-lowest mark since players converted a mere 32.12 percent of their chances last year.

Kevin Garnett still isn’t ready to return for the Celtics. Rookie center Semih Erden has a groin pull. And Jermaine O’Neal is weighing the options of in-season surgery after aggravating a knee injury that forced him to miss 20 games already this season. The injury would sideline him for an indefinite amount of time, but the Celtics would hope he could return in late March or early April and be ready for the postseason. Until then – or the much-awaited return of center Kendrick Perkins from his knee surgery -- the Boston front line will remain razor-thin.

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sacramento Kings at New York Knicks (-9, 218.5)

Most teams struggle to find offensive production with their starting point guard on the sidelines. However, the Kings have pushed forward without leading scorer Tyreke Evans, who is out with an ankle injury.

Sacramento is scoring more than 113 points per game with Evans out, playing over the total in each of those contests. Wednesday’s 119-95 loss to the Boston Celtics extended the Kings’ over run to five games and improved their over/under mark to 7-3 in the last 10 outings.

Of course, this string of over paydays has just as much to do with poor defense as it does scoring. Sacramento has allowed almost 106 points per game in that 10-game span including watching opponents crack the century mark in each of the past five contests.

Evans is questionable for Friday’s tilt with New York. However, his presence won’t stop the bleeding on defense and will only add to the Kings’ firepower.

The Knicks are no strangers to high-scoring games. They rank tops in the NBA in scoring and have played over the total in 11 of their last 15 games against the Kings, including a 113-110 win in Sacramento that topped the 208.5-point number in November.

        Pick: Over

Los Angeles Clippers at Golden State Warriors (-3.5, 209.5)

There’s nothing like beating the NBA’s highest-profile team on your home court. Well, maybe if you managed to snap that team’s road winning streak and hand them their first loss in 10 games.

That’s what the Los Angeles Clippers did to the Miami Heat Wednesday – and that’s why bettors would be smart to fade L.A. heading into Thursday’s matchup with the Golden State Warriors. The Clippers, who have won seven of their last 10 games (6-3-1 ATS), have peaked with the win over Miami and face a hungry Warriors squad that just went toe-to-toe with the defending NBA Champs.

Golden State is coming off a 115-110 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, covering as a 6-point underdog for its seventh ATS win in the last 10 games. Star guard Monta Ellis is over his bout with the flu and dropped 38 points on the Lakers Wednesday.

The Clippers and Warriors have split their two meetings this season, but Los Angeles is just 2-8 ATS in its last 10 trips to the Bay Area.

        Pick: Golden State

College Funds: Today's best NCAAB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Butler Bulldogs at Detroit Titans (+6, 143)

The last time Detroit beat Butler, Hostel was ruling the box office, Steve Irwin was still wrestling crocodiles and Justin Timberlake still hadn’t brought “SexyBack.” Ah, February of 2006.

Since then, the Bulldogs have won eight straight by an average margin of 9.75 points, but five of the meetings have been decided by seven or fewer points. However, the Titans are 5-3 ATS during that span, including going 4-0 ATS in the past four meetings.

If the Bulldogs are to keep their winning streak against the Titans going, however, they must get better play from NBA prospect and senior guard Shelvin Mack.

Mack is shooting just 39 percent for the season, but went 8-for-13 in an 84-79 win over Youngstown State, including 5-for-9 on 3-pointers en route to a career-high 28 points.

"Ultimately, it's up to me to knock down shots," Mack said. "I've really been struggling lately. Just worry about the next shot. Fortunately, it went in today."

They should keep going in against Detroit.

          Pick: Bulldogs

Fairfield Stags at Loyola (Md.) Greyhounds (+5, 125)

Offense isn’t something that comes easy for Loyola. The Greyhounds have scored fewer than 60 points in five of their nine losses and are ranked 232nd in average points (67.0), 264th in field goal percentage (41.5) and 231st in 3-point field goal percentage (32.7).

That’s why the team has tried to slow it down against some better opponents. And a slow-down approach is fine with Fairfield.

The Staggs suck at scoring – just 64.1 points per game – and shooting threes – an absurdly bad 27 percent beyond the arc. However, Fairfield loves slowing the game down, yielding just 53.9 points per game, the second-best mark in the county. Fairfield also is 16th in opponents’ field-goal percentage (38.2) and 55th in opponents’ three-point percentage (30.5).

When the two teams met this year, Fairfield continued its dominance by handling Loyola, 65-55 just before Christmas break. Overall, the Staggs are 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS in their past five against the Greyhounds, with the under going 4-1 during that streak.

          Pick: Fairfield and the under

              NHL
              Long Sheet

              Friday, January 14

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at Washington Capitals (-125, 6)

Ryan Kesler used to be one of the top penalty killing forwards in the NHL. But now, the leading candidate for the Selke Trophy is adding some pop to the Canucks top power play unit.

"I have never really played in front of the net or anything like that," Kesler said. "I had a lot of success the year before on the half-wall. It was definitely a big change. It was a little tough at first because I was the guy who always controlled the puck a lot."

Playing with Daniel and Henrik Sedin, Kessler is crowding the crease and helping make passing lanes for the pair of talented twins. The first man advantage unit has scored 27 of Vancouver's 42 power-play goals this season and Kesler has netted eight of those.

Overall, Kesler has 24 goals and 41 points through 42 games as the Canucks are cranking their power play at a 24.7 percent clip, the best mark in the NHL.

"We don't fall into a pattern of predictability," he said. "You don't see us scoring on one play over and over. It's a lot of different plays, a lot of shooting the puck and traffic. That is what we are good at."

Meantime, the Capitals are killing penalties at a fantastic, 85.2 percent clip, but gave up three power play goals in a single game in a 4-3 loss to the Panthers earlier this week.

              Pick: Canucks

Philadelphia Flyers at Atlanta Thrashers (-104, 5.5)

Daniel Briere is used to being snubbed. The center has 22 goals and 15 assists in 37 games, ranking him 26th in the league in points. However, when it comes to clutch play, it’s clear Briere is among the best in the league.

The forward has 25 points on the road this season – putting him among the top-5 in the league in road scoring, as the Flyers are 14-4-3 away from Wells Fargo Center. That’s the fewest road losses in the NHL. But Briere does more than just score. His plus-19 mark also is among the best in the game for a forward, showing his ability to be on the ice up or down a goal is crucial to the Flyers success.

In a recent 5-2 win at Buffalo, he responded to being an All-Star snub by letting his play do the talking. He recorded his first four-point game of the season and downplayed his success.

"It was a weird game," Briere said. "I didn't think we played two well in the first 40 minutes. Somehow we came back in the locker room and we were fortunate to be tied at two. So we were telling ourselves, 'Let's at least show up for the last 20 minutes and take it to them.' We did that and we showed why we are [in] first [place]."

Expect the Flyers to play like a first place team again in Atlanta.

              Pick: Flyers

                  Daily Sports Roundup: January 14

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Mavericks and Spurs meet again in San Antonio, while Butler takes on Detroit, and the Blue Jackets get a visit from the Wings.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up 11 games on Friday night, with Detroit at Toronto, Milwaukee at Philadelphia, Chicago at Indiana, Sacramento at New York, Charlotte at Boston, New Orleans at Houston, Cleveland at Utah, New Jersey at the Lakers, the Clippers at Golden State, Portland at Phoenix, and Dallas at San Antonio. The Mavericks and Spurs have met twice already this season, with Dallas winning 103-94 on the road as a 4.5-point underdog in November, and San Antonio winning 99-93 on the road as a 3.5-point favorite in December. Dirk Nowitzki (knee injury) missed that December matchup for the Mavericks. Tim Duncan led the attack for the Spurs with 17 points and 11 boards.

A limited college basketball schedule for Friday is then highlighted by a pair of Horizon League matchups: Valparaiso at Wright State, and Butler at Detroit. The Bulldogs (12-5 SU, 9-5 ATS) got past Youngstown State 84-79 at home last time out, with Shelvin Mack pouring in 28 points for Butler in that victory. The Titans (10-7 SU, 6-6 ATS) are coming off a 72-69 road win over Illinois-Chicago, with Ray McCallum tossing in 17 points for Detroit that night. Butler got past Detroit 63-58 when they last played in February 2010.

                  Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are six games on the NHL's schedule for Friday, with Vancouver at Washington, Calgary at Ottawa, New Jersey at Tampa Bay, Philadelphia at Atlanta, Colorado at Minnesota, and Detroit at Columbus. The 27-11-5 Red Wings are coming off a 5-4 loss in Colorado on Monday night. Detroit netminder Jimmy Howard was pulled after giving up four goals on 10 shots in that defeat, while Henrik Zetterberg and Tomas Holmstrom each had a goal and an assist. The 20-20-3 Blue Jackets have lost five games in a row, most recently falling 4-3 at home to Phoenix on Tuesday night. Mathieu Garon stopped 24 of 28 Phoenix shots in that loss. Detroit is 2-0 vs. Columbus this year.

                    Friday's six-pack

-- Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont all came within one inch of setting all-time state 24-hour snowfall records on Wednesday.

-- Former Bowling Green coach Dan Dakich is ESPN's Rookie of Year; he is good-natured and says some good stuff, both in the studio and on game telecasts.

-- Cam Newton declared for NFL Draft; if Tim Tebow got drafted in the first round, then Newton is a first rounder too, right?

-- Mississippi State got PG Dee Bost back from suspension, and then upset Ole Miss 69-64 in Oxford; State big man Sidney is out of shape and lazy, but still put up 24 points, albeit with only five rebounds.

-- UCLA blew a 15-point halftime lead at Oregon State, but pulled the game out in last minute, escaping Corvallis with a 62-57 win, the 12th straight series win for the Bruins.

-- Bronx Bombers gave Rafael Soriano $35M for three years to be set up man and insurance for closer Rivera; going to be a long summer in St Petersburg, as reality of being a small market team sets in.

                    *******************************

Friday's List of 13: What I'm looking for this weekend......

                    13) Six of last seven Raven-Steeler games were decided by 4 or less points, and they’re usually low scoring games. Ravens let Pittsburgh off the hook last time they met, turning ball over when they led with 3:00 left. This should be a very conservatively-coached game where special teams/turnovers are even more vital than usual.

                    12) Falcons are an underrated team, winning nine of last ten games, don’t think they get enough credit. Pack outgained them 418-295 in Week 12 20-17 Falcon win in Georgia Dome. This should be an excellent game.

                    11) Seattle is 8-9, with all nine losses by 15+ points, but they won here in Week 6, one of their two road wins. This is a golden opportunity for Bears to advance to NFC title game with a minimum of stress.

                    10) Bill Belichick is a cheatin’ bastard, but at least he’s a quiet cheatin’ bastard. I’m very tired of hearing the WWE Jets run their mouths, like what they say has a chance to distract the Patriots. Sell your PSLs in the offseason, fellas. Game is at 4:30 Sunday; that’s when the real talking is done. Whoever wins, I’ll be rooting for the Steeler-Raven winner next week anyway.

                    9) Did you know that teams that beat the Miami Heat are 7-1-1 against spread in their next game? Teams that lose to Miami are 10-17-2 vs spread in their next game.

                    8) Teams that play the night after facing the Heat are 8-4 vs spread, no matter how they did; teams that have at least one off-day before their next game are 9-14-3 vs spread.

                    7) San Diego State takes its 18-0 record to The Pit in Albuquerque Saturday; that’ll be good test for the defensively-stout Aztecs, as Steve Fisher tries for career win #401.

                    6) Cincinnati-Syracuse is an underrated game Saturday; Bearcats have one loss, Orange still hasn’t lost, and looked awful good in dispatching St John's in Manhattan Wednsday night. .

                    5) Northwestern hammered Iowa Wednesday night; what can they do against the struggling Spartans in East Lansing?

                    4) Old Dominion-Hofstra is an early showdown for supremacy in the CAA; should be good game on Long Island.

                    3) Colorado had a terrific win at Kansas State Wednesday; they become a Big 12 darkhorse if they can beat Oklahoma State in Boulder Saturday.

                    2) Central Florida lost its first game at Houston Saturday; they probably get loss #2 in Hattiesburg against Southern Miss this Saturday.

                    1) Monday is an NBA holiday, as 10 of the 13 scheduled games are in the afternoon, on Martin Luther King Day.
