    Daily Sports Roundup: January 13

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Heat look to scorch the Nuggets in Denver, while Minnesota hosts Purdue, and the Blues travel to Los Angeles to battle the Kings.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up three games on Thursday night, with Washington at Minnesota, Orlando at Oklahoma City, and Miami at Denver. The Nuggets shook off trade rumours and blasted the Suns 132-98 in Denver in their last game on Tuesday night. Arron Afflalo led the way with 31 points for the Nuggets in that easy win, while Carmelo Anthony was good for 28 points and 10 rebounds. Ty Lawson added 16 points off the bench for Denver in that contest. Denver and Miami split their two meetings last season.

As well, there are two games involving ranked teams on the college hoops schedule for Thursday, with No. 17 Washington at Stanford, and No. 8 Purdue at Minnesota. The eighth-ranked Boilermakers (15-1 SU, 10-2 ATS) have won 10 straight games, getting past Iowa 75-52 at home last time out behind 18 points from Ryne Smith. The Golden Gophers (12-4 SU, 5-8 ATS) are coming off a 67-64 loss on the road against Ohio State; Trevor Mbakwe had 16 points for Minnesota in that game on Sunday, but he was then arrested on Monday night on allegations of violating a restraining order from a former girlfriend. Minnesota topped Purdue by a score of 69-42 in the Big Ten tourney semifinals in 2010.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are eight games on the NHL's schedule for Thursday, with Philadelphia at Boston, Carolina at Buffalo, Ottawa at the Islanders, Vancouver at the Rangers, Nashville at Florida, Toronto at Phoenix, Edmonton at San Jose, and St. Louis at Los Angeles. The Kings fell to 23-18-1 on the season with a 3-2 home loss to the Maple Leafs on Monday night. Wayne Simmonds and Michal Handzus had the goals for Los Angeles in that defeat, while Jonathan Quick stopped 25 of 28 shots. The Blues beat the Kings 6-4 at home as a +120 underdog when the teams last met on December 16. David Backes and Vladimir Sobotka each had a goal and two assists in that night's win.

Bettors' best friend: Thursday's wagering tips

      Who’s hot

NBA: Washington has covered eight of its last nine meetings with Minnesota.

NBA: Miami is 11-2 ATS in its last 13 road games.

NHL: Vancouver is riding a 14-0-3 hot streak.

      Who’s not

NBA: Denver is 1-3-1 against the number in its last five.

NHL: Edmonton is 1-7-2 in its last 10 and has won only 14 of its last 60 road games.

NCAAB: Stanford has dropped its last five meetings with Washington against the spread.

NCAAB: UCLA is 2-6-1 ATS in its last nine games.

      Key stat

88.9 – points per game the Washington Huskies average heading into Thursday’s date with Stanford, which is the third-best offensive output in the country. The Huskies will be up against a tough defense against Stanford, which allows only 60 points per contest.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Andray Blatche (shoulder), Washington Wizards – Blatche was forced to leave Tuesday’s loss to San Antonio with a sprained shoulder and is considered day-to-day. The club hoped he would feel better Wednesday, but Blatche said he was still in pain and didn’t sleep well. He missed Wednesday’s practice and is doubtful for Thursday’s game against Minnesota. The Washington big man is averaging better than 16 points and eight rebounds per game.

      Game of the day

Orlando Magic at Oklahoma City Thunder (1, 205)

      Notable quotable

"Crazy. Karma is a b****.. Gets you every time. Its not good to wish bad on anybody. God sees everything!" - LeBron James tweeted after the Cavs' 55-point loss to the Lakers on Tuesday.

      Notes and tips

Michael Beasley will likely have to take at least a few days off after spraining his left ankle for the third time on Tuesday. Beasley said that he “really can’t walk this time,” following Tuesday’s loss to San Antonio and is very doubtful for Thursday’s game against Washington. Beasley is averaging 20.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

According to the Daily News, the New York Knicks have entered the Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes in a big way with talks with New Jersey breaking down. Apparently, the Knicks are willing to part with two of these three players: Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Landry Fields. Eddy Curry and at least one first-round pick would also be involved. The Nuggets square off against the Miami Heat on Thursday.

The San Jose Sharks may be without rookie sniper Logan Couture for a while after he collided with Colton Orr during the second period of Wednesday’s loss to Toronto and didn’t return. The team isn’t releasing details about Couture’s injury, but reports indicate San Jose is still awaiting test results, though coach Todd McLellan said he didn’t “blow out” his knee. San Jose hosts the Oilers on Thursday.

        Thursday's six-pack

-- San Diego State acted quickly, naming DC Rocky Long its football coach; Long was head coach at New Mexico for eleven years.

-- Aztec hoopers are now 18-0, as Steve Fisher won his 400th game in a tense struggle, 55-49 over cold-shooting UNLV.

-- St John's may have ten seniors on their roster, but none of them can shoot. Red Storm looked clueless against Syracuse zone Wednesday.

-- Not sure who best team in C-USA is, but it ain't Memphis-- they lost at lowly SMU 64-58. Just a hideous loss for the Tigers.

-- Idaho beat Nevada by 5, its 4th straight WAC win, first time in their six seasons in WAC that they've won four league games in a row.

-- Clippers led Miami 44-26 after first quarter, hung on for 111-105 win, ending Heat's 13-game road winning streak.

        *******************************

Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

        13) Why did Duke wait until January 12th to play a true road game? It showed at Florida State last night, as Seminoles rebounded from an awful loss at Auburn by knocking off #1 Duke, third time in last nine years they beat the Blue Devils when Duke was #1 in the country.

        12) Huge win for Kansas alum and Colorado coach Tad Boyle, winning 74-66 at Kansas State; Boyle buult up the Northern Colorado program, now has taken over for Jeff Bzdelik in Boulder and has the Buffs on the way to maybe a very surprising NCAA bid.

        11) Faulty logic, but some nitwit will believe this:
Presbyterian beat Auburn, which beat Florida State, which beat Duke. Therefore, Presbyterian would beat Duke. Hmmmmm, not so much.

        10) One of the officials for the Syracuse-St John's game last night was Gene Steratore, who is also an NFL referee.

        9) If I'm a Carolina Panther season ticket holder, I'm hesitant to pony up big bucks to watch a team that downgraded in head coach from John Fox to Ron Rivera, just to save $3M a year.

        8) Rasheed Wallace once had 41 technical fouls in an 82-game season- is this the NBA's version of Hack Wilson's 190 RBI, a record that has zero chance of ever being broken?

        7) NBA ref Ken Mauer called five technical fouls in a 10-second span of Tuesday night's Spurs-T'wolves game; Minnesota was home, but five of the six technicals called in the game were on them, including two on Kurt Rambis, Minnesota's coach. Losing teams don't get as much respect.

        6) When Sacramento Kings needed a hoop to tie Washington Tuesday, they isolated journeyman guard Pooh Jeter on rookie John Wall, and he went by the rookie like he wasn't there, scoring a game-tying layup. The learning curve for these inexperienced rookies who only played a year or two in college is extremely steep. You learn defense in college.

        5) All this talk about the Brady/Manning rivalry in NFL reminds me a little of the Russell/Chamberlain debate from the NBA in the 60's. One is a better stat guy, one wins a little more, both are really great.

        4) Texas Tech/Utah both got crushed at home by rivals Tuesday, as the clock ticks on their head coaches. Utah is no longer relevant in the MWC and they're headed to the Pac-10, so they need a major upgrade in head coach when that happens. As for Tech, all they care about is football, so Pat Knight has been given this long, but with Colorado/Nebraska leaving the league, Tech will be the hoop doormat in the Big (12-2).

        3) Glad to see Jeremy Hazell back on the floor for Seton Hall; kid broke his wrist in November, then got shot in a robbery last month. Hazell and his Pirate teammates got a 78-67 win at DePaul last night, so they'll be a dangerous team the rest of the way in the Big East.

        2) Utah Jazz have 25-13 record, which is good news for Al Jefferson, who in his last four years with the Minnesota Timberwolves, never won more than 24 games in any one season. Utah's Andrei Kirilenko recently became an American citizen, by the way.

        1) There have been 245 NBA coaching changes in the 23 seasons since Jerry Sloan became coach of the Jazz.

Washington Wizards at Minnesota Timberwolves (N/A)

The Washington Wizards have hoped that trading away Gilbert Arenas would give Nick Young a chance to assert himself with more playing time. It took a while, but maybe Tuesday’s performance was what Young needed to get himself going.

The 6-foot-7 guard scored a career-high 43 points on 14-of-22 shooting in a 136-133 win in overtime over Sacramento, with Washington set as a 7-point favorite.

"You almost didn't want to take him out because he was so hot," coach Flip Saunders said about Young, who was also 7 of 10 from downtown. "I have always had that philosophy that you never want to take a guy out that might have a chance to break Wilt Chamberlain's record."

Outside of Young’s big night, the Wizards still had lots of issues on Tuesday. They blew a 20-point lead in the first quarter and then nearly coughed up a five-point advantage in overtime.

Still, if Young can produce another solid outing against a Timberwolves club that is expected to be without Michael Beasley, they might have a shot at snapping a 19-game road slump that dates back to last season.

                            Pick: Wizards

Miami Heat at Denver Nuggets (4, 205)

So, at least for the moment, Carmelo Anthony is still a member of the Denver Nuggets. The reality is that he’s likely on his way out of town sooner or later, but for now the team has to deal with the distraction of the trade chatter.

The Nuggets hammered the Phoenix Suns 132-98 on Tuesday with ‘Melo contributing 28 points in the blowout. But Denver faces a totally different animal on Thursday against the Heat.

"The reason I think they're good is they play with such mental toughness and energy," Denver coach George Karl told reporters.

"I mean, they're a talented bunch of guys, but they're also a 'play hard' bunch of guys. Playing hard is so important to this game. When you get confused or when you lose your confidence, you get a little distraction or a confrontation, what usually goes out the window first is playing with energy."

Funny, there aren’t any type of distractions kicking around Karl’s locker room these days are there? The Heat will come into Denver and make a statement here.

                            Pick: Heat

                              No. 8 Purdue at No. 25 Minnesota (4, 135.5)

With Robbie Hummel on the shelf for the year, it was hard to know what to expect from the Boilermakers. It’s safe to say that they’re surpassing expectations without the former Big Ten player of the year.

As it is Purdue has already won its first four conference games and has covered the number in five straight. E’Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson are still the main duo for Purdue, but the club is starting to get some production from outside sources.

"When you think about Purdue, you think about E'Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson," coach Matt Painter said. "That's where it starts, and if you're going to double up on Johnson, or if you're going to kind of shade E'Twaun Moore on a screen, there's going to be people open."

Both Moore and Johnson are struggling a bit lately but Ryne Smith has picked up the slack, putting up about 17 points per game over the last four. He had 18 points and hit six treys in 75-72 win over Iowa on Sunday.

If all three of those guys can get it going at the same time, Purdue should be able to cover the number.

                              Pick: Purdue

No. 24 Virginia Tech at North Carolina (-6, 140)

The Virginia Tech Hokies have a pretty good idea about what they’re going to try against the Tar Heels on Thursday. But they don’t have any idea if it’s going to work.

The Tar Heels have the advantage in individual talent and size, leaving the Hokies to try to stick with what’s working and go from there.

"You're talking about a team with seven McDonald's All-Americans and the high school Player of the Year," Hokies coach Seth Greenberg told reporters. "They've got so many pieces. They're really a complete team."

"We still have to run. We've got to score easy baskets. No matter who you are, how you play, the team that scores the most easy baskets wins a lot of scenarios. So, we've still got to run and get some things in transition."

There’s no arguing that, but it’s not going to be that easy for the Hokies. We think the Tar Heels will make the necessary adjustments.

                              Pick: North Carolina
