Bettor's best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

    Lines to watch

Phoenix Suns at Denver Nuggets. This game is currently off the board, but with rumors of a Carmelo Anthony blockbuster imminent, the possible absence of Carmelo and Chauncey Billups, or attempts at figuring out their current mindset, could lead to fluctuations in the line prior to game time.

    Who’s hot

NHL: The under in 9-0 in the Washington Capitals last nine games against Southeast division rivals.

NBA: The Minnesota Timberwolves are 4-0 ATS in their last four games against teams with a winning percentage better than .600.

NCAAB: The under is 7-1-1 in Texas’ last eight visits to Texas Tech

NHL: Nashville Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne is 4-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average and .969 save percentage over his last four games.

    Who’s not

NHL: The Ottawa Senators are winless in five games, scoring just seven goals over that stretch.

NBA: The Sacramento Kings are 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 games following an ATS win.

NCAAB: The Auburn Tigers are 0-3-2 ATS in their last five road games.

NHL: New York Rangers forward Marian Gaborik has just two goals and five points in his last 10 games.

    Key stat

15 – The current win streak by the San Antonio Spurs over the Minnesota Timberwolves, currently the longest in the NBA by one team over another. The last time Minnesota topped San Antonio was Jan. 3, 2007 and they just lost to the Spurs 94-91 on Sunday.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Detroit Red Wings center Valtteri Filppula has missed the team’s last two games with a groin injury. He is a game-time decision, but even if he plays a groin injury can linger for a long time. Filppula has 10 goals and 15 assists in 40 games this season, but he is even more valuable right now as the team is playing without the likes of Pavel Datsyuk, Dan Cleary and Mike Modano.

    Game of the day

Montreal Canadiens at New York Rangers (-145, 5)

    Notable quotable

“I dream about our center getting 10 rebounds.” - New Jersey Nets coach Avery Johnson, in response to being asked if he is dreaming about the team acquiring Denver Nuggets All-Star Carmelo Anthony. Johnson has publicly been criticizing Brook Lopez as of late, as the third-year center has averaged 8.1 and 8.7 rebounds per game his first two years, but is only averaging 5.9 in 2010-11.

    Tips and notes

Utah Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan said on Monday that he is contemplating a lineup change, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. Sloan is fed up with the team’s constant slow starts to games. Utah leads the league with 12 victories when trailing by at least 10 points and have won seven times when down by as much as 15. All-Star point guard Deron Williams and frontcourt players Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson are apparently safe in their starting spots, meaning that Andrei Kirilenko and Raja Bell could be shifted to the bench, with Ronnie Price and C.J. Miles as possible candidates for a promotion.

The New York Rangers and Phoenix Coyotes completed a trade on Monday, with New York sending veteran Michal Rozsival to the desert in exchange for young forward Wojtek Wolski. The Rangers needed a forward after Alex Frolov joined the long list of New York forwards to go down with injury, while Phoenix finally had struggled to find a top-four defensemen to replace Zbynek Michalek, who left via free agency this offseason. While the trade fills needs for both teams, it’s not confirmed if the players will play in Tuesday’s contests.

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Michael Beasley missed practice Monday due to an ankle injury. Beasley first suffered the injury in Friday’s games against Portland, but re-aggravated it when he rolled his ankle early in Sunday’s loss to the Spurs. He played just 11 minutes and scored only two points. Beasley, the team’s leading scorer at 21.9 points per game, is listed as questionable and will be a game-time decision.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Portland Trail Blazers (-3, 202.5)

The revamped Knicks will be playing their third game of a four-game West Coast swing, having defeated Phoenix and getting beat by the Los Angeles Lakers.

Amar’e Stoudemire continues to pile in the points, but he shot just 7-for-24 in the loss to Los Angeles, as the trio of Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom forced him into many difficult shots.

Stoudemire will be in tough again with Portland, as Trail Blazers power forward LaMarcus Aldridge is having the breakout season everyone was waiting for. Aldridge has had at least 25 points and 10 rebounds in five straight games and is leading a Portland team without star Brandon Roy.

Aldridge and veteran Marcus Camby make Portland one of the NBA’s strongest rebounding teams, a category New York routinely gets outmatched in. The Blazers are tough to beat at the Rose Garden and their frontcourt depth should keep the Knicks from getting into their run-and-gun offense.

      Pick: Portland

      Indiana Pacers at Philadelphia 76ers (-4.5, 194)

The Indiana Pacers have some promising young talent in Danny Granger, Roy Hibbert and Darren Collison, but right now scoring is not the team’s strong suit. The Pacers are 21st in the league in scoring, 28th in field goal percentage and struggles on the road.

The one thing the Pacers do right, however, is get offensive rebounds. All the extra second-chance points are what keep Indiana competitive and facing the 76ers should help.

Philadelphia is one of the league’s stronger defensive teams, but they are just 23rd in defensive rebounding, so a lot of their defensive efforts could be for naught.

As Philadelphia also struggles offensively, the contest could be decided by the fact that Danny Granger is the most reliable go-to player in the game and Indiana will get the most easy (and multiple) chances.

      Pick: Indiana

No. 21 Wisconsin at No. 24 Michigan State (-3.5, 122)

This classic Big Ten battle will see one of the nation’s stingiest defenses face a team that was ranked as high as No. 2 this year.

Tom Izzo’s Spartans have been somewhat of a disappointment this season, starting the year as the second-ranked team in the nation but getting out to a pedestrian 10-5 record.

The Spartans uncharacteristically struggle as a defensive team, ranking 133rd in the nation in points allowed per game. Michigan State has shifted to more of an offensive club, ranking as one of the better 3-point shooting clubs and strong on the offensive glass.

They will need to be at their best as they face a physical Wisconsin squad that is fifth in the nation in allowing 55.2 points per game.

The Badgers are led by Jon Leuer, one of the nation’s top players, and his 19.3 point per game average, but other than that Wisconsin struggles to score.

Jordan Taylor chips in with 16.4 points per contest, but no other player averages in double figures. The Badgers are one of the lowest-scoring teams in the nation and are abysmal in grabbing offensive rebounds.

This game should be another typical conference tilt; a hard-nosed battle where points are at a premium.

          Pick: Under

Rutgers at No. 9 Connecticut (-12, off)

Rutgers has been a pleasant surprise so far this season, jumping out to a 10-5 record after four straight losing seasons.

The Scarlet Knights, competing in the juggernaut Big East, lost to Villanova and Marquette, but recorded a big victory over Providence on Saturday.

Rutgers has problems on the offensive end, but makes its living on defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 38.6 percent from the field. In their win over Providence, the Scarlet Knights allowed Friars leading scorer Marshon Brooks to get 29 points, but they held the rest of the team to just 25.5 percent shooting.
Look for them to do the same to Connecticut star Kemba Walker.

Walker is the nation’s leading scorer at 25.8 points per game. He scored 22 points in Saturday’s overtime loss to Texas, but he was just 8-of-27 shooting from the floor.

UConn has struggled all season to provide secondary scoring for Walker, which results in the junior taking too many ill-advised shots. Rutgers will look to continue that trend, allowing Walker to get his but shutting down the rest of the team.

While the Scarlet Knights’ turnaround season is a nice story and they have the gameplan to stop UConn, the Huskies are 17-1 against Rutgers since 1995 for a reason – they have too much talent.

          Pick: Connecticut

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Wild at Nashville Predators (-149, 5)

The Nashville Predators are a streaky team, but right now they’re white hot.

The Predators have won five straight, allowing more than one goal just once, when they yielded two goals in a 5-2 win. Finnish goalie Pekka Rinne has allowed four goals over his last four games, making 40-plus saves in the last two victories.

The Minnesota Wild have also been operating in a similar fashion, having allowed just two goals in a three-game span before losing 4-0 to Dallas.

Starting goaltender Niklas Backstrom has been sidelined with a hip injury, but backup Jose Theodore has been playing like his 2002 Vezina-winning form, backstopping the Wild through the recent win streak.

Both teams pride themselves on defense and with the way both netminders are playing you shouldn’t expect the red light to go off too often.

            Pick: Under

Phoenix Coyotes at Columbus Blue Jackets (-128, 5.5)

The Desert Dogs are mired in mediocrity right now, going 4-2-2 in their last eight games. The problem in Phoenix has been the lack of consistency in scoring goals. The Coyotes have 25 goals in their last 10 contests, except 11 of those tallies came in two games.

Captain Shane Doan is on fire, with 13 points over an eight-game point streak that was snapped in Saturday’s loss to Buffalo. While Doan’s linemates, Eric Belanger and Scottie Upshall, are also collecting points, the team has very little offense otherwise.

The team also lost forward Wojtek Wolski, who was traded on Monday to the New York Rangers for veteran defenseman Michal Rozsival, who could join the team against Columbus.

Playing a shorthanded team that lacks scoring is good news for Columbus, although that’s the only good news the team has received in awhile.

The Blue Jackets are on a four-game losing streak and are giving up goals in bunches. Columbus netminders have allowed 20 goals during the skid, which is not a pleasant statistic.

While Phoenix may be up-and-down, the Blue Jackets are just down…and falling.

            Pick: Phoenix

                  13) I’m all in favor of division winners getting one home game in NFL playoffs, but after that, they should re-seed according to record; no way Seattle should get a home game in NFC title game with potentially a 9-9 record next week, should they and the Packers both win this week.

                  12) Its been six years since the defending Super Bowl champ won a playoff game.

                  11) Kansas City Chiefs are first NFL ever to lose seven playoff games in a row. Last time they won one, their QB was Joe Montana.

                  10) I don’t understand why people (other than police) are allowed to carry guns. What good comes of it? Seems that more disasters/accidents/ tragedies happen than good.

                  9) Nuggets are in freefall until Carmelo Anthony gets traded; TNT or someone last week had some great video clips of Nene posting up, not getting the ball from Carmelo, who jacked a bad shot instead, then they both jogged down the court and watched the other team score a fairly easy basket. They’re a fractured team now; sooner they make this trade, the better.

                  8) So the NCAA declared Kentucky freshman Enes Kanter permanently ineligible; where does he stand with the NBA? Could a team just sign him? If he’s good enough to start for Calipari, chances are he has NBA ability, right? Couldn't the Cavaliers use him, like.......now?

                  7) UCLA signed a high school QB named Brett Hundley who is blowing off his senior year in high school to start college early so he will be good to go for the Bruins in the fall. UCLA desperately needs a QB, so this is big news for Rick Neuheisel. Big news in a good way.

                  6) The two worst rules in sports are:
                  a) The designated hitter in baseball
                  b) The NBA rule where if you call a timeout you get to move the ball to the frontcourt; it artificially enhances end-game situations, its stupid.

                  5) Random Statistic I: Teams are 2-7 vs spread the night after playing the Raptors; teams are 8-3 the night after playing Miami.

                  4) Random Stat II: Washington Wizards are 0-10 vs spread as road underdog of 9 or less points; they’re 0-9 vs spread if they won their previous game.

                  3) From the People-are-Bastards collection: Read lot of sniping about Peyton Manning this weekend, on how his time is nearing an end and how his legacy will be damaged if he doesn’t win at least one more Super Bowl- these are lot of the same people who killed him before he had won a championship, and would still kill him if he won two, or three…….

                  2) Then there is Colts’ coach Caldwell, who looks lost on the sidelines; guy went 26-62 in eight years at Wake Forest, was gifted with a Super Bowl contender by Tony Dungy, but is now presiding over the franchise’s demise. At some point fairly soon, Colts will have to start thinking about developing another QB- if they don’t show improvement next year, the might be hiring a new coach, too.

                  1) Steelers are 5-2 in last seven games against Baltimore, but only one of those seven games was decided by more than four points, with an average total of just 32.7. Close, low-scoring, hard-hitting ballgames.
