Notre Dame looks for 4-1 start in Big East play

        NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH (12-3)

        at MARQUETTE GOLDEN EAGLES (11-5)

        Tip-off: Monday, 7:00 p.m. EDT
        Line: Marquette -3, Total: 147

With three impressive victories on its home court in its first four conference games, Notre Dame has shown the look of an emerging, experienced team in perhaps the toughest conference in college basketball. Monday night, the Irish will be looking to reach two more mini-milestones. A win on the road over Marquette would give Mike Brey’s team its first 4-1 start in conference play in six seasons, as well as its first road conference win this season. But to do that, the Irish will need to take out a Marquette team that is 9-1 on its home floor.

It is an interesting stretch for Notre Dame, who after Monday night will not play another game until Sunday afternoon in New York City against St. John’s, whom they just defeated this past Saturday in South Bend by 15 points. Leading scorer Ben Hansbrough realizes that trying to win on the road will require a much higher level of play than the Irish have shown so far. "When you go on the road you really have to be ready to handle pressure, and be ready to rebound and defend because that is how you win on the road," he said. "We are going to have to be at our best in those areas if we want to win."

Hansbrough has definitely been at his career-best of late, after a disappointing 12-point game in his team’s New Year’s Day loss at Syracuse, he bounced back to post 21 points in a 73-70 win over Connecticut, and then added a career-high 26 in Saturday’s triumph over the Red Storm. While Hansbrough leads a quintet of Irish players scoring in double figures, the team will be without its second leading rebounder and top shot blocker, Carleton Scott (11.9 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 1.8 BPG), who is expected to miss a month with a partial tear of his left hamstring. Look for Tim Abromaitis (16.2 PPG, 7.3 RPG) to pick up some of the slack on the interior.

When it comes to playing ranked opponents, it has been a case of “close, but no cigar” for Buzz Williams’ team. This season the Golden Eagles have lost to #1 Duke by five points, #24 Vanderbilt by one point, and Saturday fell to #5 Pittsburgh by eight points. They also dropped a game to then-No. 18 Gonzaga in November by three points. Despite averaging a healthy 80.8 PPG this season (19th best in Division I) and connecting on nearly half its shots from the floor (49.8% FG, seventh-best in Division I) Marquette’s defense of late has resembled Gandhi’s political philosophy: passive resistance. The Golden Eagles allowed Pitt to shoot an astounding 60% from the floor last Saturday. A big source of their defensive shortcomings has to do with defending the three-pointer. Marquette ranks last in the conference in 3-point FG defense (38.5%). Meanwhile, Notre Dame is near the top of the league at making the three-pointer (37.7%). Look for Marquette to lean heavily on the hot hand of junior guard and leading scorer Darius Johnson-Odom (15.9 PPG) as well as swingman Jimmy Butler (15.1 PPG, 6.4 RPG). Johnson-Odom is one of only two players in the Big East averaging over 20 points a game in league play (23.2 PPG).

In their last meeting, Notre Dame defeated Marquette in Milwaukee 63-60 in overtime last March. Ben Hansbrough scored only four points on 1-of-6 shooting, but Tim Abromaitis scored 18 and added nine rebounds to help the Irish take the only meeting between the schools last season. However, the Golden Eagles are 7-4 (SU and ATS) versus Notre Dame since 1997, and these two FoxSheets trends also side with Marquette to win and cover on Monday.

Buzz Williams is 15-2 ATS (88.2%, +12.8 Units) versus teams who attempt 21 or more 3-point shots/game on the season as the coach of MARQUETTE. The average score was MARQUETTE 79.6, OPPONENT 66.3 - (Rating = 4*).

NOTRE DAME is 1-10 ATS (-10.0 Units) in road games after one or more consecutive overs over the last 3 seasons. The average score was NOTRE DAME 69.6, OPPONENT 80.3 - (Rating = 2*).

This FoxSheets four-star trend leans towards the Under.

NOTRE DAME is 13-1 UNDER (+11.9 Units) off a win by 10 points or more over a conference rival over the last 3 seasons. The average score was NOTRE DAME 64.6, OPPONENT 64.9 - (Rating = 4*).

Celtics try to keep Rockets winless in 2011

          HOUSTON ROCKETS (16-21)

          at BOSTON CELTICS (28-8)

          Tip-off: Monday, 7:30 p.m. EDT
          Line: Boston -8.5, Total: 197

Boston opens a six-game homestand on Monday night when it hosts struggling Houston at TD Garden.

The Celtics will look to rebound from Saturday's ugly loss to Chicago, 90-79, which ended their four-game winning streak. Paul Pierce (19.1 PPG, 5.3 RPG) had 21 points, Ray Allen (17.5 PPG, 45.0% 3-pt FG) finished with 19 points, and Rajon Rondo (10.7 PPG, 13.4 APG) chipped in with 13 points and eight assists. Boston was outrebounded, 48-27, and tallied a season-low 12 assists against the Bulls. The Celtics still lead the NBA in assists with 24.6 APG, but rank second-to-last in rebounding (38.7 RPG). After missing six games and seeing the team go 4-2 in his absence, Kevin Garnett (15.0 PPG, 9.5 RPG), who's been sidelined with a right calf injury, is doubtful to return versus Houston. Boston also leads the NBA in scoring defense, allowing only 91.4 PPG, but the Celtics have surrendered 103 points (San Antonio) and 102 (Toronto) in winning their past two home games.

Since climbing to .500 on Dec. 31, the Rockets are winless in 2011 and will bring a five-game losing streak (and an eight-game ATS winless skid, 0-6-2) to Boston. They've surrendered at least 100 points in their past seven games overall, including Saturday's 103-99 overtime loss to Utah at home. Luis Scola (19.3 PPG, 8.2 RPG) scored 24 points and added 10 rebounds against the Jazz, while Kevin Martin (23.2 PPG, 42.2% 3-pt FG) had 20. Houston, which ranks fifth in the NBA in scoring (104.8 PPG) and second in assists (23.8 APG), hit only 3-of-25 from three-point range and shot 38% overall versus Utah. Point guard Aaron Brooks (12.1 PPG, 4.8 APG) was sidelined for the third straight game with a left ankle sprain and is questionable for Monday night.

The Rockets have enjoyed recent success when visiting Boston with a 10-3 ATS mark (8-5 SU) in its past 13 trips to Beantown. The two teams split the season series in 2009-10. Boston won in Houston, 94-87, as Pierce scored 15 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter. The Rockets returned the favor in Boston, winning in overtime, 119-114, thanks to Brooks' game-high 30 points and Scola's 27 points and 11 boards. Don't expect the Rockets to make it two in a row on Monday. This FoxSheets trend likes Boston to win and cover the spread.

Play On - Favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points (BOSTON) - after going over the total by 24 or more points total in their last three games, a top-level team (>=75%) playing a marginal losing team (40% to 49%). (29-10 since 1996.) (74.4%, +18 units. Rating = 2*).

The FoxSheets also side with the Over.

Play Over - All teams where the total is between 190 and 199.5 points (BOSTON) - a good offensive team (98-102 PPG) against a horrible defensive team (>=102 PPG), after a combined score of 175 points or less. (29-7 since 1996.) (80.6%, +21.3 units. Rating = 3*).

Bulls look to beat Detroit for 10th straight time

            DETROIT PISTONS (12-24)

            at CHICAGO BULLS (24-12)

            Tip-off: Monday, 8:00 p.m. EDT
            Line: Chicago -10, Total: 190

Chicago looks to continue its dominance over Detroit and extend its home winning streak to seven games when it hosts the Pistons on Monday night.

The Bulls snapped a two-game losing skid on Saturday with a 90-79 victory over Boston. Derrick Rose (24.2 PPG, 8.1 RPG) led Chicago with 36 points, including a career-high 15-of-19 from the free-throw line. Carlos Boozer (20.3 PPG, 10.0 RPG) added 22 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double in the past six games. The Bulls rank sixth in the NBA in points allowed (93.9 PPG) and second in rebounding (44.2 RPG).

Meanwhile, Detroit has lost four consecutive road games and has just one win in its past 13 games away from home. The Pistons have allowed 106.3 PPG over their past three games, but are coming off a 112-109 overtime victory over Philadelphia on Saturday. Austin Daye (6.5 PPG, 3.1 RPG) tied the game with a three-pointer in regulation and scored the first five points in OT. He finished with 15 points, while fellow reserve Greg Monroe (5.4 PPG, 5.4 RPG) scored a career-high 16 points and added 13 boards in posting his second straight double-double. Tayshaun Prince (14.6 PPG, 4.7 RPG) led Detroit with 23 points, and is shooting 57% FG over the past four games. Rodney Stuckey (15.5 PPG, 5.1 APG) had 20 points after scoring only three points combined in his first two games back from an illness.

Chicago is 2-0 against Detroit this season and has won nine straight SU (7-1-1 ATS) against the Pistons overall. The Bulls beat the Pistons at home, 101-91, on Oct. 30 and at Detroit on Dec. 26, 95-92. And during his short career, Rose has had the Pistons' number at the United Center. He tied a career-high with 39 points the October win, hitting 13-of-27 from the floor to go along with seven assists and six rebounds. He has averaged 25.8 points and has shot 62.5% in four career home games against Detroit.

Expect Rose to put up some big numbers as the Bulls coast to another home victory over the Pistons on Monday. This FoxSheets trend likes Chicago to win and cover the spread.

Play On - Home favorites (CHICAGO) - off a home win by 10 points or more against opponent off an home win scoring 110 or more points. (101-53 since 1996.) (65.6%, +42.7 units. Rating = 2*).

DETROIT is 11-28 ATS (28.2%, -19.8 Units) vs. division opponents over the last 3 seasons. The average score was DETROIT 92.3, OPPONENT 98.1 - (Rating = 2*).

The FoxSheets also like the final score to finish Under the total:

DETROIT is 12-1 UNDER (+10.9 Units) as a road underdog of 6.5 to 12 points this season. The average score was DETROIT 83.2, OPPONENT 97.5 - (Rating = 3*).
