Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

    Lines to watch

BCS Championship: Auburn opened as a 2.5-point favorite over Oregon with the total at 74.5. The Tigers now sit around -2.5 with the total at 73.5 or 74.

    Who’s hot

NCAAF: Auburn has covered in six of its last seven.

NBA: Detroit has covered in seven of its last nine games overall.

NBA: Chicago Bulls have covered in eight of their last 10 games with Detroit.

NHL: St. Louis is 20-8 in its last 28 home games.

NHL: Detroit has won three straight and 21 of its last 29 meetings with Colorado.

    Who’s not

NBA: Houston is riding an 0-6-2 run against the spread.

NHL: Boston has dropped four of its last five.

NHL: Phoenix has won three of its last 10 meetings with St. Louis.

NHL: Colorado has own only two of its last nine.

NHL: Los Angeles has one win in its last six games.

NCAAB: Marquette is 2-6 ATS in its last eight home games.

    Key stat

28 – average number of points Auburn allowed over its last eight games. The Tigers still managed to cover the number in six of those games while playing over the total six times as well.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Kevin Garnett (hamstring) Boston Celtics – Garnett is getting closer to returning to the lineup, but probably won’t play Monday at home to the Houston Rockets. Garnett strained his right calf on Dec. 29 against Detroit and the Celtics have gone 2-4 against the spread since. He’s considered doubtful for Monday but is targeting a return sometime this week.

    Game of the day

BCS Championship: Oregon vs. Auburn (-2, 74)

    Notable quotable

“We’re not letting any magnitude of the game, being the national championship, get to us. It’s not like, ‘Oh dang. The national championship. Oh, wow.’ We’re more like, it’s the next game, it’s the next team on the map that we know we’re going to have to defeat. We’re 60 minutes away from being crowned national champions.” – Auburn Tigers linebacker Josh Bynes.

    Notes and tips

Last year the Oregon Ducks were accused of losing focus leading up to the Rose Bowl. This time around they’ve been all business leading up to Monday’s BCS Championship game. By all accounts the Ducks’ practices have been crisp and focused with a few wrinkles worked into them. On Saturday, Oregon had wide receivers throwing passes, possibly to get ready for some gadget plays against Auburn.

If you’re looking for a halftime wager in the BCS game, Auburn has been a tough team to play against in the second half. The Tigers have allowed only 48 points in the fourth quarter this season and allows teams to convert on only 24 percent of third-down attempts in the second half.

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Jack Johnson signed a seven-year contract extension worth $30.5 million. Johnson is coming off a three-assist performance against Columbus and heads into Monday’s game with Toronto with four goals and 27 assists for 31 points in 41 games.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Rockets at Boston Celtics (N/A)

You have to hand it to Celtics coach Doc Rivers. He’s as positive as can be when things are going well, but there might not be a better quote in the Association when he’s frustrated with his club.

Boston shot just 37.8 percent from the floor and had a season-low 12 assists in a 90-79 loss at the Chicago Bulls on Saturday as a 2-point underdog.

“We were pretty awful,’’ Rivers told reporters after the game. “Let’s say it was [the Bulls’] defense. Let’s give them the credit but we were bad. That’s the worst ball movement we’ve had this year. We basically bounced the life out of the game tonight.”

Boston was beat up inside as Shaquille O’Neal put up just five points and four rebounds in almost 20 minutes of work while Glen Davis added only 11 points and three boards in 43 minutes. Jermaine O’Neal was a non-factor too, so it’s becoming pretty obvious that Boston needs to get Kevin Garnett back in the lineup.

He should return this week but isn’t expected to play Monday. Either way, expect the Celtics to bounce back here at home.

      Pick: Celtics

Detroit Pistons at Chicago Bulls (-10, 189.5)

The Detroit Pistons continue to deal with ramped speculation that they will be involved in a trade that will reportedly send Denver’s Carmelo Anthony to New Jersey. If the rumors are legit, this deal would have a big part of Detroit’s team heading out of town.

Not surprisingly, Rip Hamilton, who has butted heads with Detroit brass, is being named as one of the players on his way to Denver. Veteran Chauncey Billups is reportedly on the block as well, while Detroit would end up with Troy Murphy and Johan Petro.

The rumors come at a tough time for Detroit bettors. The Pistons have covered in seven of their last nine, including a 112-109 overtime win over Philadelphia as a 1.5-point favorite on Saturday.

“The thing I was impressed with was we never gave up,” Pistons coach John Kuester told reporters after the game. “We came up and kept battling. It was a great win.”

Putting back-to-back victories together could be a tall task for Detroit though, especially with Chicago coming into the matchup riding a high after their win on Saturday.

      Pick: Bulls

No. 15 Notre Dame at Marquette (-3, 146)

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are feeling pretty good about their quick start in conference play. They are looking for their first 4-1 start in the Big East in six season.

Notre Dame has won two straight in dropping UConn and St. John’s after a blowout loss at Syracuse. That loss to the Orange has the Irish wary about Monday’s road game.

"When you go on the road you really have to be ready to handle pressure, and be ready to rebound and defend because that is how you win on the road," senior guard Ben HanXXXough told reporters. "We are going to have to be at our best in those areas if we want to win."

Notre Dame could be a handful for Marquette, which is 0-4 straight up against top 25 teams this season. However, the Golden Eagles have covered in four straight games, including an 89-81 loss at Pitt as an 8.5-point underdog.

Perimeter defense could be huge on Monday. Marquette ranks last in the Big East defending the trey, while Notre Dame sits second behind Pittsburgh in 3-point field-goal percentage.

          Pick: Notre Dame

          Jacksonville at Belmont (N/A)

The Belmont Bruins don’t see a lot of lines from oddsmakers but they take care of business when they do.

Belmont is 4-0 against the spread and has won eight of their last straight up heading into Monday’s game against Jacksonville. The lone loss they suffered over that stretch was a 1-point loss to Tennessee.

Outside of the previously discussed battle in the Big East, the college hoops schedule is light on Monday, so the books may release a line for this one. Belmont has balanced attack that is averaging almost 83 points per game and the Bruins are coming off a 91-59 beat down of North Florida.

Look for Belmont’s offense to keep the club’s winning streak going against Jacksonville.

          Pick: Belmont

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pucking the trends: Weekly NHL betting trends
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

              HOT TEAM: Buffalo Sabres

Saturday’s 2-1 win over Phoenix was typical Buffalo. Tight checking, solid goaltending from Ryan Miller, and timely goal scoring.

              Not pretty, just productive.

The Sabres have been doing a lot of that lately, and along the way, have clearly dispatched that awful start to their season. Miller’s been great – 33 saves vs. the Coyotes – and Buffalo has won three of four in January, four of five overall, and has at least one point in each of those games on this run.

This team lives and dies with Miller and he’s started 18 straight games for Buffalo, so bettors will have to pay attention to see if the All-Star netminder begins to wear down.

              COLD TEAM: Calgary Flames

There was a flicker of hope in Calgary as we turned the corner for 2011. A three-game winning streak grew to four as the Flames won on Jan. 1, 2-1, over Edmonton, and the critics, for a change, had to silence themselves. But reality struck last week, as the Flames fizzled, and reminded everyone just how light on talent this team might be.

Calgary lost three games in five days – to the Islanders, Canucks and Red Wings – and only extracted one point out of the stretch, because they took Detroit to overtime.

Heading into Tuesday’s game at Carolina, the Flames are stuck on 18 wins, and woke up on Sunday in fourth place in the Northwest Division.

The Flames should be active players leading up to the trade deadline and no skater on their roster is safe. It could be a nagging distraction for this club moving forward.

              POWER PLAY: Los Angeles Kings

With 23 wins heading into Monday’s game vs. Toronto, it’s safe to say the Kings are probably a tad disappointed with their standing. They woke up on Sunday in third place in the Pacific Division, and while they’re in good shape, remember this team began with Stanley Cup aspirations four months ago.

All that said, they are fun to watch. They score goals in bunches, and allow goals in the same manner. And you know what that adds up to: A quality over play.

The Kings have topped five goals, for and against, in three of four games this month, and headed back to December, that stretch is at five of six, as they prepare to take on the Maple Leafs.

The overs may continue to flow this week, as they have a three-game homestand against teams that sometimes are a little weak themselves on the defensive end. So, keep an eye on the Kings, as they meet Toronto, St. Louis and Edmonton at the Staples Center.

              UNDER PLAY: New York Rangers

It took awhile for the Rangers to truly carve out an identity in the Atlantic Division this season. Going in, it was clear they weren’t going to be among the elite.

They got themselves into a groove in November, though, and now they are firmly established as the division’s third team. And they’ve done it with defense and – no surprise here – the goaltending of Henrik Lundqvist.

Which makes them a quality under play, moving forward, folks. In fact, in five games across January, the Rangers have not once surpassed five goals, for and against. And if you go back to the final game of 2010, that stretch is at six as the Rangers meet up with Montreal on Tuesday night.

              KEY INJURY

Pens captain and NHL leader scorer Sidney Crosby is out indefinitely after suffering his first career concussion. Pittsburgh is 0-2 since Crosby went down and play games on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

              SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE

** Things are going great for Minnesota these days, as the Wild entered Sunday unbeaten in January. But the schedule is clogged from here on out. They have a date with Dallas on Sunday, which begins a stretch of six games in 11 days, seemingly a contest every 48 hours. The legs may get a little weary.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Pittsburgh Penguins (N/A)

Life without Sidney Crosby hasn’t been kind to the Penguins. They’re 0-2 since Crosby went on the injury shelf with a concussion after suffering two blows to the head in less than a week.

Capitals forward David Steckel collided violently with the NHL’s leading scorer on New Year’s Day and Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman left his mark on Crosby four days later.

"(After the) Winter Classic game, he had neck symptoms. He did not have concussion symptoms after the Tampa Bay game," Pens coach Dan Bylsma told the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. "(Crosby) was not feeling right, and per our doctor's orders, if he woke up (Thursday) morning and felt the same way, he would need to get evaluated."

"Until he's symptom-free, we won't be moving forward."

Pittsburgh’s depth up the middle is really being tested with Crosby and Mike Comrie out, Evgeni Malkin battling a cold and Jordan Staal still shaking off the rust.

                Pick: Bruins

Detroit Red Wings at Colorado Avalanche (-110, 5.5)

On Saturday, the Red Wings beat the Canucks at home, a feat only five other teams have managed to do this season. The win was even more remarkable considering the Wings were missing centers Pavel Datsyuk, Valtteri Flippula and Mike Modano.

Meanwhile, things are looking really bad for the Avalanche. Colorado is 2-5-2 in its last seven games after falling 4-3 to the Islanders on Saturday.

"We have to find a way to win, to fight through it," Avs captain Adam Foote told the Denver Post before the setback to the Islanders. "We've got to get over this and get refocused. It seems a little that since Christmas break we've been a little distracted.”

                    Daily Sports Roundup: January 10

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: College football ends its season with the BCS Championship Game, the Celtics host the Rockets, and Notre Dame meets Marquette.

                    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The college football season wraps up on Monday night with the BCS Championship Game between No. 2 Oregon and No. 1 Auburn at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. The Ducks (12-0 SU, 6-4-1 ATS) topped Oregon State 37-20 last time out to remained undefeated on the season, with LaMichael James rushing for 134 yards with a pair of touchdowns for Oregon in that victory. The Tigers (13-0 SU, 9-3 ATS) blew past South Carolina 56-17 last game, as Heisman winner Cam Newton threw for 335 yards and four scores while running for 73 yards and two more TDs. Oddsmakers like Newton and Auburn in this contest, pegging them as the 2.5-point favorites with the total at 73.5.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up three games on Monday, with Memphis at Charlotte, Detroit at Chicago, and Houston at Boston. The Rockets (16-21 SU, 17-18-2 ATS) have lost five games in a row, falling 103-99 at home to Utah in their last game on Saturday. Luis Scola had a team-high 24 points for Houston in that loss, while Kevin Martin chipped in with 20 points. The Celtics (28-8 SU, 18-17-1 ATS) were beaten 90-79 in Chicago in their last game on Saturday, allowing Bulls guard Derrick Rose to pour in 36 points. Paul Pierce had 21 points for Boston in the loss, and Ray Allen was good for 19 points.

There's just one Top-25 team in action around college hoops on Monday, with No. 14 Notre Dame on the road against Marquette. The Irish (14-2 SU, 6-5 ATS) knocked off St. John's 76-61 last time out, with Ben HanXXXough scoring 26 points in that win. The Golden Eagles (11-5 SU, 6-2 ATS) are coming off an 89-81 road loss to Pittsburgh, with Darius Johnson-Odom scoring 20 points. Marquette fell 63-60 to Notre Dame last year.

                    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are four games on the NHL's schedule for Monday, with Phoenix at St. Louis, Detroit at Colorado, Toronto at Los Angeles, and Boston at Pittsburgh. The Bruins fell to 21-12-7 on the season with a 3-2 overtime loss to the rival Canadiens in Montreal on Saturday night. Patrice Bergeron had both Bruins markers in that defeat, while Tim Thomas allowed three goals on 42 Montreal shots. The Penguins are playing without leading scorer Sidney Crosby (concussion), and they were beaten 4-0 at home by Minnesota on Saturday night. Marc-Andre Fleury made 33 saves for the Pens that night.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

                      13) Amazing stat: Before Jamaal Charles had his long TD run against the Ravens Sunday, Baltimore had gone 2,484 running plays since allowing a TD run of longer than 30 yards. Last one was October 2005.

                      12) There were several tremendous college hoop games this weekend, as games at UAB, Ohio U and St Bonaventure all went to triple OT, game at San Jose State went four OTs, and Bowling Green-Buffalo went two OTs. Michigan took Kansas to OT before losing Sunday. First weekend of conference play was super.

                      11) Charlotte 49ers had to be shaking their head after their 92-88 loss in triple OT at St Bonaventure; 49ers were 8-9 from the line in 55:00, while homestanding Bonnies were 31-42. In a close, tense game.

                      10) How weird is it that the only NFL home team to win this weekend was a 7-9 team that many said shouldn't have been allowed to play? The underdogs were 3-1 against the spread (Ravens covered as a favorite).

                      9) Ravens-49ers play each other next year, so you can be sure that'll be a primetime game, as Harbaugh brothers oppose each other in a regular season game. Game will be in Baltimore.

                      8) Auburn was a 2-point home favorite Saturday against LSU; at half, they were down 32-6, Yes, 32 to freakin' 6. Funny thing is they wound up losing by only 62-55, but Auburn has been awful in its new arena.

                      7) College basketball needs the semi-circle under the basket, so kids stop flopping every time someone drives in the lane. Would probably cost Duke 5-7 points a game not to be able to draw charges like that.

                      6) Miami Heat looked like a beaten team Sunday night, but they won in OT, outscoring Portland 9-2 down stretch in regulation, then dominating the extra period. Lebron and Wade combined for 77 points.

                      5) Cincinnati and Central Florida both lost for first time this weekend, as UCF was down 15 at half and lost 76-71 at Houston, making just 3-14 beyond the arc. Cincinnati was 2-20 from the arc at Villanova in s 72-61 loss. Bearcats did force 19 turnovers from Villanova's strong guards.

                      4) Big win for Georgia's program, starting off SEC play with 77-70 win over Kentucky; Mark Fox won big at Nevada, and he's making progress with the Dawgs. SEC East is a minefield though; no easy outs.

                      3) Graeme McDowell shot an 11-under par 62 Sunday and still did not win in Maui, as Jonathan Byrd beat Robert Garrigus in a playoff after Garrigus yakked on a 3-footer on the second extra hole. Imagine going 11-under par in one day and not winning the tournament?

                      2) Spreads for next week's NFL games:
Pittsburgh -3 over Baltimore (36); New England -8.5 over Jets (45.5)
Chicago -10 over Seattle (40); Atlanta -2 over Green Bay (45.5)

                      1) Before automatically dismissing the Seahawks next week in Chicago, know that one of Seattle's two road wins this year was back in Week 6, a 23-20 win at Soldier Field. Seattle (+6) was coming off a bye. Bears were a hideous 0-12 on 3rd down. Seahawks sacked Cutler six times, leading to a 15-yard edge in field position. Bears did run a punt back for a TD.
