    Daily Sports Roundup: January 7

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: LSU takes on Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl, the Stars get a visit from the Rangers, and New Orleans goes west to battle with the Lakers.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

It's No. 11 LSU vs. No. 18 Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl at Cowboys Stadium on Friday night. The 11th-ranked Tigers (10-2 SU, 5-6 ATS) fell 31-23 to Arkansas in their last game, with QB Jordan Jefferson being held to 184 yards passing with no touchdowns. Stevan Ridley ran for 75 yards with two scores for LSU in that defeat. The Aggies (9-3 SU, 7-4 ATS) are coming off a 24-17 win over Texas, as Cyrus Gray ran for 223 yards with two touchdowns. Ryan Tannehill threw for 128 yards and a score for Texas A&M that day. Oddsmakers have made LSU the 2-point favorites over Texas A&M for Friday's bowl matchup, while the total for the contest in Dallas sits at 49 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up 11 games on Friday, with New Jersey at Washington, San Antonio at Indiana, Chicago at Philadelphia, Toronto at Boston, Houston at Orlando, Portland at Minnesota, Utah at Memphis, Miami at Milwaukee, New York at Phoenix, Cleveland at Golden State, and New Orleans at the Lakers. The Hornets (21-15 SU, 18-16-2 ATS) are coming off a 110-103 home loss to Golden State on Wednesday, with Chris Paul scoring 24 points for New Orleans in that game. The Lakers (25-11 SU, 16-19-1 ATS) knocked off the Suns 99-95 in Phoenix on Wednesday, as Kobe Bryant tossed in 24 points. Los Angeles won 103-88 as a 3-point favorite in New Orleans on December 29.

As well, with no ranked teams in action around college basketball on Friday the Missouri Valley Conference gets the spotlight, with matchups including Northern Iowa at Indiana State, Evansville at Missouri State, Bradley at Drake, Creighton at Southern Illinois, and Wichita State at Illinois State. The Shockers (12-2 SU, 5-5 ATS) have won seven straight games, beating Drake 82-63 last time out; J.T. Durley had 13 points for Wichita State in that contest. The Redbirds (8-6 SU, 2-8-1 ATS) are coming off an ugly 72-57 loss to Indiana State in their last game, with Jackie Carmichael scoring 16 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are seven games on tap around the NHL on Friday night, with Carolina at Florida, Toronto at Atlanta, Ottawa at Chicago, Detroit at Calgary, Edmonton at Vancouver, Columbus at Anaheim, and the Rangers at Dallas. The 23-15-3 Rangers are coming off a 2-1 home win over Carolina on Wednesday night, with Mats Zuccarello providing the game-winning goal in overtime. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 31 of 32 Carolina shots on that night. The 24-13-4 Stars beat the Blackhawks 4-2 in Chicago in their last game on Wednesday, with Mike Ribeiro (with two), Brenden Morrow, and Steve Ott providing the markers in the victory. Kari Lehtonen had 35 saves in that game.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

      Who’s hot

NCAAB: Indiana State is 10-1 ATS in its past 11 home games.

NBA: Philadelphia 76ers are 9-1 ATS in their past 10 home games.

NBA: Utah Jazz have seen the over go 15-6 in their past 21 road games.

NHL: Vancouver Canucks are 24-8 in their past 32 games overall.

      Who’s not

NCAAB: St. Peter’s Peacocks have seen the under go 7-0-1 in 8 games.

NBA: New Jersey Nets are 2-9 ATS in their past 11 road games.

NHL: Florida Panthers are 3-7 in their past 10 home games.

NHL: Calgary Flames have seen the under go 9-3-1 in their past 13 games overall.

      Key stat

7 – Straight wins for the Orlando Magic, each by at least 8 points. With new starters beginning to gel with the old core, this team looks like a legitimate player in the Eastern Conference. Not surprisingly during the 8-game winning streak, the team is 6-1 ATS, including covering four times as a favorite of 6 or more points.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson will not play on the team's upcoming five-game road trip due to a sprained ankle. Gibson sat out two games before playing 26 minutes in Wednesday's loss to Toronto, collecting 13 points and six assists.Gibson will miss games at Golden State, Phoenix, the Los Angeles Lakers, Utah and Denver. He is averaging 13.7 points and 3.1 assists.

      Game of the day

Cleveland State Vikings at Butler Bulldogs (-6, 132)

      Notable quotable

"They were so drunk they had to carry a couple of the guys onto the bus." – Bus driver Curtis Hall who drove the Russian Junior National Team from Adam’s Mark Hotel to the airport in Buffalo. The team was reportedly so drunk, it wasn’t allowed to board its flight home.

      Notes and tips

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll made it official -- Matt Hasselbeck will be the starting quarterback for the team's Wild-Card round game against the New Orleans Saints. Hasselbeck missed the team's season finale due to a hip injury, but shared the snaps with backup Charlie Whitehurst in practice this week and is healthy enough to play. The 35-year-old Hasselbeck completed 59.9 percent of his passes this season for 3,001 yards, 12 touchdowns and 17 interceptions

Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin had a cortisone shot after Tuesday's loss to Tampa Bay, the Washington Post reported. The report did not indicate where Ovechkin received the shot but said he wore a non-contact jersey in Thursday's practice. Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau told the newspaper that Ovechkin is expected to practice again Friday. "Bruce gave me some skating, no puck handling, nothing," Ovechkin told the Post. "He told me just be relaxing and ready for Saturday (vs. Florida)." Ovechkin has 14 goals and 28 assists this season.

Minnesota guard Devoe Joseph was told on Wednesday that he will be released from his scholarship so he can transfer to another school. Joseph was a key player in Minnesota's run through the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments last season. He had averaged 11.2 points per game in eight contests this season, but was suspended the first six games of the year for breaking team rules. His loss means the team has basically only one player on the roster who can make 3s – Blake Hoffarber. Hoffarber has 43 triples this year, followed by Joseph’s 16. After that, no other player has made more than 8.

        Friday's six-pack

-- Game of the Night: Boise State 102, San Jose State 101 in 4 OTs.

-- Cincinnati stayed unbeaten by beating crosstown rival Xavier for first time in four years, 66-46. Cincinnati-Villanova is Sunday.

-- Stanford upset Arizona 55-41 in Tempe, is one of two unbeatens in a shaky Pac-10, along with Washington.

-- Charleston won 76-72 at Furman in battle of Southern Conference unbeatens; Bobby Cremins' Cougars beat Tennessee last week.

-- Disappointing Northwestern got hammered by 25 at Illinois, falling to 0-3 in Big 11; they're not looking too good for March Madness.

-- Baseball season starts March 31 this year with six Thursday games, the first time MLB starts on a Thursday since 1976.

        **********************************

Friday's List of 13: What I'm looking for this weekend.......

        13) Can Seahawks give New Orleans a game? Seattle is 5-3 at home; would think they’ll need Hasselbeck to play and play well to make this game interesting.

        12) Indianapolis beat the Jets in AFC title game; now teams meet again a year later. When home team wins a playoff game then plays that team again in playoffs the next year, they’re 11-2 SU against them.

        11) Ravens are a road favorite at Arrowhead; Chiefs are in playoffs for first time since 2006. If I’m the Patriots, I’m rooting like hell for Kansas City to win. Wouldn't want any part of the Ravens.

        10) Packers-Eagles is a dynamite matchup for Wild Card weekend; Pack struggles stopping the run. If Michael Vick is in full throttle, Pack will have hard time keeping up with him.

        9) How do Carolina/Cincinnati expect to win consistently, when Panthers won’t pay a quality coach (the departed John Fox) $6M a year, and Bengals won’t fork over $7M for an indoor practice facility? These teams have to make a boatload of money, don't they? Wouldn't kill them to spend some of it.

        8) Who’s going to win the first PGA tournament this year? With a snowstorm looming in the northeast, watching golf from Hawai’i has an added appeal.

        7) Lamar Odom has never been an All-Star, but you watch the Lakers play and there’s a big difference in their play when he’s on court and off court. Very talented, very unselfish.

        6) NC-Greensboro started this season 0-12, but look at their schedule-- they’ve played half the ACC, plus VCU/Richmond- what imbecile made that schedule? No way could they expect to win any of those eight games!!! Wake Forest is awful, and still beat the Spartans by a hoop.

        5) Wade Phillips signed on as Houston’s defensive coordinator for next year, putting him in position to be an interim coach yet again, should Texans get off to a slow start and Kubiak were to get fired. His father Bum Phillips was very popular in Houston when he coached the Oilers in late 70’s/early 80’s.

        4) New York Times reports that Auburn’s football team’s graduation rate is as follows: 100% for Caucasian players, 49% for African-American players, the biggest disparity of all 70 bowl teams this season.

        3) When Rams lost in Seattle Sunday night, they jumped from 21st in next April’s draft to 14th. You never know; in long run, they might be better off.

        2) Amare Stoudemire returns to Phoenix with the Knicks Friday night; Suns are a sinking ship with old sailors on board. Once Steve Nash moves on, they’ll be back to Square One.

        1) Oregon-Auburn play for national title Monday night; the wait for these kids is horrendous, 37 freakin’ days. Both teams were at Laker-Sun game in Phoenix Wednesday night- they have to be chomping at the bit to get on the field and play.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Jazz at Memphis Grizzlies (+1, 195)

Tony Allen is the hottest name around the Grizzlies right now – and it shouldn't be for playing cards.

Allen, the former defensive star with the Boston Celtics, has an absolute hideous jumper and was buried deep on the bench for the majority of the early going. But over the past five games he has emerged as a key cog to the team reaching the postseason. Allen is averaging 5.7 points and 1.1 assists per game, however during his hot five-game streak, he is averaging 10.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game in more than 26 minutes of action.

"I'm a blue-collar guy. I don't mind working hard. I just had to show them [enough to gain] some trust," Allen said. "I'm just gonna play my role and stay within the realm of things … and make some lay-ups." Then he shook his head and smiled.

His recent altercation with teammate O.J. Mayo over a gambling debt could affect this playing time in the eyes of upper management, but if the team wants to win, he needs to keep seeing the floor.

"He's got a different dynamic," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. "He's always talking. Always upbeat. He's not afraid to say what he feels. And I've never seen a guy who gets his hands on so many balls and is still able to recover."

                            Pick: Memphis

Cleveland Cavaliers at Golden State Warriors (-9.5, 209)

The Warriors have found a pretty good way to win: give the ball to Monta Ellis.

The guard had 29 points, five rebounds and four assists in a stunning, 110-103 comeback win in New Orleans. For the season, he is averaging 25.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He also is shooting a dynamite 38.8 percent from beyond the arc.

"I think it's because we had been playing good basketball," Warriors coach Keith Smart said. "Sometimes you don't get the real outcome of the game because you don't get the win. But I think our guys have had a great deal of mental toughness. That's what they're trying to get, mental toughness, to keep working when things are not going their way. Because, eventually, somewhere along the line, things are going to fall in place for you."

And despite the Warriors’ struggles, the team is 8-6 at home due to an early, road-intensive schedule. The team plays well in front of its own crowd and is a solid play as a favorite, posting a 6-4 ATS record when laying points.

The Cavs have no one to guard Ellis, meaning he should get into the lane at will and the Warriors should pick up a strong victory as they pad their home record.

                            Pick: Golden State

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland State Vikings at Butler Bulldogs (-6, 132)

Can the Bulldogs rebound against one of the most surprising teams in the country? Not if Vikings guard Norris Cole has anything to say about it.

The senior guard is doing just about everything for the Vikings this season, averaging 20.9 points, 4.9 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game. In two games against Butler last season, he averaged just 14 points and shot a meager 8-of-24 from the field. But this summer he spent dozens of hours shooting jumpers to up his scoring average nearly four points per game more than last year.

"We go as Norris goes," CSU head coach Gary Waters said.

And Butler has done little to recapture last season’s magic. The team is just 10-5 and is coming off an absurd, 76-52 loss at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, snapping the team’s 22-game Horizon League win streak. In the loss, Panthers sophomore guard Kaylon Williams posted a triple-double – 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists – as Butler had no answer for him.

If Butler can’t shut down Williams, how will it have any answer for Cole? It won’t.

                              Pick: Cleveland State

Evansville Purple Aces at Missouri State Bears (-16)

The Bears have a pretty simple key to maintaining momentum after a 24-12 season last year: better communication on screens.

Missouri State demonstrated their improved defensive ability earlier this week when the underdogs rallied from a 29-20 halftime deficit at Creighton to post a 67-55 win over the Blue Jays. Coach Cuonzo Martin credited the team’s halftime adjustments and commitment to call out and switch on screens as the team’s biggest reason for picking up the big road win. Not a bad accomplishment for a team that went 1-17 in Missouri Valley League action the past two years.

"In years past, we had never gotten over the hump in road games," center Will Creekmore said. "We had defensive breakdowns and little things that killed us.

Today we were solid with key stops and executing on plays down the stretch."

Overall, the Bears are ranked 53rd nationally by allowing an average of just 62.3 points per game.

                              Pick: Bears
