Atlanta Thrashers at Florida Panthers (-125, 5.5)
The Florida Panthers have won two straight games heading into Wednesday’s game against the Thrashers and are feeling pretty good about themselves. That could change in a hurry unless they can shore up their play in their own end against Atlanta.
The Thrashers have been inconsistently lately but somehow got out of Montreal with a 4-3 overtime win thanks to another Dustin Byfuglien goal in the extra session despite allowing 50 shots on goal.
"Our team's all about having fun, working hard and playing together," Byfuglien said. "We've been doing all right this year."
That much is for sure, but Atlanta’s success earlier in the year centered on getting as many shots on goal as possible. Lately though, the Thrashers have gotten away from that and haven’t had more than 34 shots on goal over the last six games.
That should change Wednesday. The Panthers have allowed at least 37 shots in four of their last five and will be in big trouble if they continue that trend against Atlanta.
Pick: Thrashers
Dallas Stars at Chicago Blackhawks (-165, 5.5)
The Blackhawks may have won seven of their last nine meetings with the Dallas Stars, but they’ll be up against a team that is looking to secure its longest road winning streak in more than nine years.
All of a sudden, the Stars can’t seem to do anything right at home, but continue their dominance on the road. They have won five straight on the road including a 4-2 win at St. Louis on Sunday.
Goaltender Kari Lehtonen was huge in that victory in stopping 28 shots while snapping a personal four game losing streak. He had allowed 10 goals over his previous two starts.
"It was a great bounce-back game for him," coach Marc Crawford told reporters of Lehtonen, who stopped the final 19 shots he faced. "They had a couple really good chances in the third period and he stood his ground. He's a calming influence when he plays like that."
That’s exactly what Dallas will need to stay on the winning track against the Blackhawks, who picked up a 4-3 win over Los Angeles on Monday thanks to captain Jonathan Toews. He returned to the lineup early after a shoulder injury and scored the game winning goal in the third.
We’ll side with the Stars in what should be one of the better games of the evening.
