    Lines to watch

Ohio State opened as a 2.5-point favorite against Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl with the total at 58. The Buckeyes now sit around -3.5 with the over/under at 56.5.

    Who’s hot

NCAAF: Arkansas has covered in six straight games.

NBA: New York is on a 17-6 run against the spread.

NBA: Oklahoma City has covered nine of its last 13 games.

NBA: Portland has covered in four of its last five games against Dallas.

NHL: Tampa Bay has won eight of its last 10.

    Who’s not

NBA: Toronto has covered in two of its last nine.

NBA: Sacramento is 2-5-1 ATS in its last eight.

NHL: New Jersey has won one of its last eight.

NHL: Columbus has won one of its last eight meetings with the Phoenix Coyotes.

NHL: Edmonton has dropped eight of nine games.

    Key stat

42 – points per game the Arkansas Razorbacks are averaging over their last six contests. Meanwhile, Ohio State averages 39.4 points per game on the year. The Sugar Bowl’s total is set at 56.5 points.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Danilo Gallinari (knee), New York Knicks – New York’s starting forward left Sunday’s win over Indiana with a sprained left knee and is expected to be out at least two weeks. Gallinari ranks fourth in team scoring at 15.3 points per game.

    Game of the day

Sugar Bowl - Arkansas vs. Ohio State (-3.5, 56.5)

    Notable quotable

"I read where Terrelle Pryor said if he was in a different style offense like a Michigan or an Auburn, he could have stats like Cam Newton. That's motivation for us. We're going to get after Terrelle Pryor. We'll give him something he hasn't seen." – Arkansas defensive end Tenarius “Tank” Wright told reporters.

    Notes and tips

Andrea Bargnani is expected to return to the Toronto Raptors’ lineup from his calf injury Tuesday against the Chicago Bulls. Toronto’s leading scorer missed four games with the injury. The Raps were 1-2-1 against the number in his absence. Point guard Jose Calderon remains questionable for the game with a sprained left foot and a right knee sprain.

Atlanta Hawks guard Joe Johnson says his shot doesn’t feel quite right after his recent elbow surgery. Coach Larry Drew said that Johnson may have tried to come back from the injury too soon but wants him to keep shooting through it. He scored 29 points on Sunday after being held to fewer than 20 points in three straight. Atlanta visits Sacramento Tuesday.

Dwayne Roloson will make his first start in goal for the Tampa Bay Lightning after the club acquired him from the New York Islanders. The veteran netminder was playing well with the Islanders before the trade and Tampa Bay hopes that he can help its season-long problems in goal. He’ll have a tough test in his debut against the Washington Capitals.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at New York Knicks (5, 207)

After San Antonio gave up 123 points in a loss to Orlando just before Christmas, the club knew it had to buckle down on the defensive end. So far, so good in that respect.

The Spurs have held three of their last four opponents to 82 or fewer points, playing under the total three times. Probably the most impressive of those wins came on New Year’s Day when the Spurs pounded the Oklahoma City Thunder 101-74 as a 6.5-point favorite.

"Hopefully it turns into a trend," Manu Ginobili told reporters. "We are very happy with the way we've played the last few games. Hopefully we just don't relax. We'll try to keep it up."

They’d better because they visit the NBA’s highest scoring team that averages more than 107 points on Tuesday.

"They want to score points," Duncan said of New York. "They want to get up and down, and we're going to have to try to control that."

We like San Antonio’s chances of becoming the first team in the league to 30 wins on Tuesday.

      Pick: Spurs

Oklahoma City Thunder at Memphis Grizzlies (1.5, 198.5)

Memphis might be one of one of the better teams in the league against the spread this season, but they’re still hard to gauge from one game to the next.

However, the Grizzlies hope their latest win will help build some confidence that will breed consistency. Memphis pounded the Los Angeles Lakers 104-85 as a 9.5-point underdog on Sunday. The win was just the team’s third win in eight games, but the Grizzlies have managed to cover five times over that stretch.

"We feel like we can play with anybody, and we should have a better record than we have," point guard Mike Conley, told reporters after the latest win. "We've laid eggs here and there, but we're working hard to become a more consistent team."

The win was a big step for a club that had just dropped games to New Jersey and Sacramento, but the Grizz will have their hands full again on Tuesday against the Thunder.

After Oklahoma City was blown out by the Spurs, it’s hard to go against them in this bounce-back spot.

      Pick: Thunder

No. 9 UConn Huskies at No. 15 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-5.5)

It’s been a tough road for the Irish already. Last week the AP Top 25 poll and five teams from the Big East ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation and Notre Dame will have already played three of those clubs after Tuesday.

UConn is coming off a 66-61 comeback overtime win over South Florida on Friday that saw them trail by nine with 11 minutes left before the Huskies’ star junior guard Kemba Walker came to the rescue by scoring 11 points down the stretch to push the game to an extra session.

Walker finished with 24 points and eight assists, but Jim Calhoun’s switch to a zone defense in the second half was just as pivotal in the victory.

"I can't think of the last time that we went 10 straight minutes in a zone. I really can't," Calhoun told reporters. "It could be a decade. I can't even remember, and I don't forget many basketball games. That saved us."

The zone might be the best way for UConn to defend Notre Dame. The Irish had problems with Syracuse’s 2-3 zone in Saturday’s 70-58 loss to Syracuse as an 8-point underdog.

          Pick: UConn

No. 5 Pitt Panthers at Providence Friars (+6)

The Pitt Panthers felt pretty good about holding Kemba Walker to 31 points in a 78-63 win over UConn as a 7.5-point favorite on Dec. 27. The way they see it, Walker got his, but it took him 27 shots to get there while the rest of the team shot only 27 percent.

"Shooting percentage is key in defending him as obviously he's a very big part of what they do on offense,” Pitt coach Jamie Dixon told reporters after the game. “One of our goals also was to keep him off of the free-throw line, which we did pretty effectively, especially in the first half."

Pitt may go with a similar game plan on Tuesday against the Friars and Marshon Brooks, who is averaging more than 23 points per game. The Friars have lost 13 straight Big East games coming into Tuesday’s matchup and just dropped their first game of the season in front of their home crowd over the weekend, falling 67-65 to St. John’s.

The Panthers should send Friars fans home unhappy again in this one.

          Pick: Pitt

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Lightning at Washington Capitals (-175, 6)

The Washington Capitals have shook off a nasty slump and are again rolling along as one of the league’s hottest teams heading into Tuesday’s game. And it’s not the team’s big guns that have taken control.

Alex Ovechkin has been better lately, but still isn’t up to his standards and Alexander Semin has only two points in his last eight games. Luckily, Washington’s third and fourth lines have accounted for four of the club’s last nine goals to spark a three-game winning streak. Eric Fehr chipped in with two goals in Washington’s 3-1 win over Pittsburgh in the Winter Classic over the weekend.

So far the Capitals have had no problems with the Lightning who are tied with Washington atop the Southeast division at 51 points. The Caps have outscored Tampa Bay 12-3 in the first two meetings, but that could change this time around.

Dwayne Roloson will make his debut in goal for the Lightning and as long as this doesn’t turn out to a parade to the penalty box, there’s value in the under here.

            Pick: Under

Detroit Red Wings at Edmonton Oilers (+145, 5.5)

The Detroit Red Wings head out on the road looking to rebound after two tough losses at home. Detroit dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the New York Islanders on New Year’s Eve and then fell 3-2 to the Philadelphia Flyers two days later.

Right now the team is having trouble putting together a full 60 minutes.

"They were better than us for 40 minutes of the game," coach Mike Babcock told reporters after the loss to Philadelphia. "But you have to play 60 good ones, not 40 or 20 good ones. They have a real good team anyway. We didn't handle it good enough."

They have a good chance to get back on track Tuesday against an Oilers team that is a bit banged up right now. Rookie Jordan Eberle is expected to join captain Shawn Horcoff and defenseman Ryan Whitney on the shelf with an ankle injury he picked up in a 2-1 loss to the Calgary Flames on Saturday.
That loss will be tough for Edmonton to overcome against the depth of the Red Wings.

            Pick: Red Wings

                Daily Sports Roundup: January 4

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Ohio State and Arkansas battle in the Sugar Bowl, while Notre Dame takes on Connecticut on the hardwood, and the Lakers meet Detroit.

                Colliding on the gridiron . . .

College Football has the Sugar Bowl on tap for Tuesday night, with No. 6 Ohio State taking on No. 8 Arkansas at the Louisiana Superdome. The sixth-ranked Buckeyes (11-1 SU, 9-2-1 ATS) bounced Michigan 37-7 last time out, as Terrelle Pryor passed for 220 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Daniel Herron ran for 175 yards and a score for Ohio State in that win. The Razorbacks (10-2 SU, 9-2 ATS) are coming off a 31-23 win over LSU, as Ryan Mallett was good for 320 yards through the air and three touchdown strikes (to go along with two interceptions). Oddsmakers have Ohio State listed as the 3.5-point favorite for Tuesday's matchup, with the total listed at 56.5 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up seven games on Tuesday, with Milwaukee at Miami, San Antonio at New York, Toronto at Chicago, Oklahoma City at Memphis, Portland at Dallas, Atlanta at Sacramento, and Detroit at the Lakers. Los Angeles fell to 23-11 SU and 15-19 ATS with an ugly 104-85 loss in Memphis in their last game on Sunday night. Kobe Bryant poured in 28 points for the Lakers in that losing cause, while Andrew Bynum picked up nine points and 11 rebounds. The Lakers and Pistons have already met once this season, with Los Angeles rolling to a 103-90 road win as a 7.5-point favorite on November 17. Bryant had 33 points in that contest, and Rodney Stuckey tossed in 18 points for Detroit.

As well, games involving ranked teams on the college basketball schedule for Tuesday include No. 5 Pittsburgh at Providence, Arkansas at No. 12 Texas, No. 2 Ohio State at Iowa, and No. 8 Connecticut at No. 14 Notre Dame. The Huskies (11-1 SU, 4-2 ATS) needed overtime to get past South Florida 66-61 last time out, with Kemba Walker tossing in 24 points in that victory. The Fighting Irish (12-2 SU, 5-4 ATS) were thumped 70-58 in Syracuse in their last game, as Tim Abromaitis scored 15 points. Notre Dame beat UConn 58-50 when the teams last met back in March 2010.

                Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are five games on the NHL's schedule for Tuesday, with Minnesota at New Jersey, Detroit at Edmonton, Buffalo at Colorado, Columbus at Phoenix, and Tampa Bay at Washington. The 23-11-5 Lightning are coming off a 2-1 home win over the Rangers on Saturday night, and they bolstered their roster on Sunday by acquiring netminder Dwayne Roloson from the Islanders. The 23-12-5 Capitals beat the Penguins 3-1 in the Winter Classic outdoors at Heinz Field in their last game on Saturday, as Eric Fehr potted a pair of markers. Washington is 2-0 against Tampa Bay so far this season.

-- Chargers fired special teams coach Steve Crosby Monday; he was with the Bolts for 11 years, should find himself another job soon.

-- In Gary Kubiak's five years coaching the Texans, Houston is 10-20 against its divisional rivals. Not good.

-- 2011 PGA Tour starts Thursday in Hawai'i.

-- Butler got crushed at Wisc-Milwaukee; they're going to have to win the Horizon tournament just to make the NCAAs this year.

-- Central Connecticut beat UMass by 29? Wow.

-- Good ballgame in Manhattan last night, as St John's went to 3-0 in the Big East with a 61-58 win over Georgetown. Bandwagon should start to fill up now for Steve Lavin's Red Storm.

Tuesday's List of 13: Ranking the NFL playoff teams.......

                  13) Giants—Slight edge over the Bucs/Chargers as best team not in the tournament. Lions deserve honorable mention for going 13-3 against the spread this season.

                  12) Seahawks—5-3 at home, but all nine of their losses are by 15+ points. When they traded a 3rd-round pick for Charlie Whitehurst, they got taken. Joe Montana was a 3rd-round pick, by the way.

                  11) Chiefs—You’d figure they had kind of a magical season, but then tactical genius Charlie Weis bolts Arrowhead for a college job, so there is stuff going on there.

                  10) Colts—When Rex Ryan says his Jets are going to win Super Bowl, he’s telling you to take the points with his team this week.

                  9) Jets-- Of course, Rex isn’t sure his QB can throw a football right now, but Rex likes to hear himself talk.........he has himself a future in WWE as a wrestling manager when he's done with the Jets.

                  8) Packers—Have trouble stopping the run. Eagles have the best running QB in football. This could be a problem.

                  7) Eagles—Philly OC Mornhinweg was one of the worst head coaches in NFL history when he led the Lions; I think he’s the last guy to win the OT coin toss and then kick off. Now he’s rumored to have a chance at the Browns’ HC job. Wow. Les Steckel isn’t available?

                  6) Bears—Will have bye week to heal up; almost won at Lambeau when they didn’t need game, a good sign. Still don’t trust Cutler in big spot.

                  5) Steelers—Have been thru a lot this year, have QB with two rings, and Polamalu came back against Browns. Tough to rule out.

                  4) Ravens—I might be overrating them-- think they’ve got best chance to go to Foxboro and beat the Patriots.

                  3) Saints—Defending champs will have to win three road games to get back to Super Bowl. Would they rather go to Chicago, or to Atlanta for Round 3 with rival Falcons?

                  2) Falcons—You don’t get many chances as the #1 seed in a conference; they need to cash this in and get to their second Super Bowl.

                  1) Patriots—No one has come close to beating them in while, since they beat Indianapolis 31-28 back in Week 10.
